10.02.17 | when the best episode of your season is the only episode that isn't about your main cast, you know something is wrong with your show.
season was shit. |
Papa Universe
10.02.17 | Am I the only one who really wasn't all that crazy about the citadel episode? |
Rowan5215
10.02.17 | The ABCs of Beth was absolute fucking garbage, one of the most embarrassing things I've ever seen from a show I like
finale and most of the rest was just mediocre
Ricklantis Mixup, the first ep, and the Jerry/Rick episode are the only good ones in retrospect |
Conmaniac
10.02.17 | so finale wasn't good? |
ChoccyPhilly
10.02.17 | No and the worst thing is that it's not like this show doesn't know how to do finales |
wwf
10.02.17 | 2>3>1 I'd say, solidly.
I honestly hated Morty's Mind Blowers, it was a sketch episode with basically one good sketch (the squirrel one) and on top of that the premise felt shark-jumpy, I have no idea how it fell so flat
I hope they focus less on setpieces and meta humor in season 4 because holy shit, the last few episodes were out of control with the amount of structure jokes. Felt like watching an episode of Harmontown more than Rick and Morty
But the stretch of Pickle Rick (ugh it sucks that the phrase 'Pickle Rick' makes me cringe now) to The Ricklantis Mixup was really, really solid I'd say, and the premiere was of course really great as well. I even absolutely loved the Vindicators episode, I have no idea why most people seem to think it's one of the worst of the season.
I think the thing I miss most about the show in season 3, is that the writing became more ironic and detached than ever; in season 1 and 2, they were willing to risk some pretty emotional moments, even underscored with some really saccharine music like with the Chaos Chaos or Elliot Smith or Nine Inch Nails or Mazzy Star bits, and in this season they didn't really try to match that
It's like, with shows like Bojack Horseman around, hiding behind a veneer of everything-sucks-nothing-is-real feels kind of lame and it feels reductive to what this show could be. It's very clear that it was intentional too, leaving the season off on basically the pettiest episode of the show ever (and this show is full of petty episodes)
So yeah, I can't help but be a bit disappointed with this season, but it still was funny enough and it was a bit more confident a season than the first one was. It's just never very much fun when you can just feel yourself sort of falling out of love with a tv show, and I hope that in the future, they're willing to let the show be more dramatic and emotional, and that'll hopefully make all the rest of the absurd shit that this show's great at even better
But I don't know, the season was kind of a mixed bag in general |
wwf
10.02.17 | 'No and the worst thing is that it's not like this show doesn't know how to do finales'
I've never been particularly fond of any of the season finales fwiw, the first season finale had sort of a similar ending where it just sort of ended on a ridiculous note
And the tone of the second season finale didn't really work particularly well for me, but it was definitely at least a risk that sort of paid off, especially considering how great the season 3 opener is. All three openers have been some of the best episodes of the show imoimo |
BlackwaterPork
10.02.17 | I feel there wasn't enough feeling of pain or powerful emotion in this season, which is something that made the show more impactful to me |
Gyromania
10.02.17 | Hands down the best season imo |
Gyromania
10.02.17 | Really bad opinions itt |
Conmaniac
10.02.17 | I thought this season was super solid too. Vindicators and Morty's Mindblowers are my fav funny episodes while Rest and Rickslaxation crossed into the show's darkest territories |

10.02.17 | ''We could be clones controlled by robots controlled by special headsets that the real Rick and Morty are wearing while they're fucking your mother''

10.02.17 | Season was very solid . Had maybe 3 episodes I didn't care for. Haven't watched the finale yet though. |
Papa Universe
10.02.17 | I mean, S1 finale is among the weakest episodes of the entire show, so it's not like string finales is the show's trademark. |
Alastor
10.02.17 | Concerto is my favourite cartoon villain of all time. |

Drummerboy123
10.02.17 | I actually liked the finale. I love seeing how insane some or Rick's weapons can be and the fight was entertaining. Seeing the family one-up Rick so to speak was a nice change of pace. Citadel episode was okay, the evil morty reprise was great tho.
A bit too much meta humour for me, probably the least funniest season so far but that's not necessarily a bad thing. I was very intrigued with a lot of the storylines and the deeper characterisation of Jerry and Morty. Fave episode was still the season opener. That was just everything good about Rick and Morty in one episode, so I can see why some people are dissapointed since it never seemed to reach that high again.
Also a lack of Poopybutthole.
2>3>1 for me. |
Papa Universe
10.02.17 | Since we're comparing fucks that appeared for one minute each:

10.02.17 | This is by episode numbers, and not list numbers:
7=1>5>6>4>8>10>3>9>2
Seasons: 1>2>3 (all seasons are extremely close to each other in quality, so all seasons were great)
The season 3 finale was just ok, the B-plot to ABC's of Beth was awful, and Rickmancing the Stone was just a bit of a bore in general. I'm a little glad the creators are going back to the season 1 structure because I do think the cliffhangers left by this season (Is Beth actually a clone?, Evil Morty, etc.) will flow really well into the reunited family dynamic. |
BlazinBlitzer
10.02.17 | Also, Morty was getting insufferable. |

robertsona
10.02.17 | Also Ok the Beth episode is way better than the jerry episode. B plot with jerry is weak but if we're gonna extol the unflinching darkness of the show's thematics the grouping together of rape and incest and cannibalism was pretty much as sobering as it gets |

dimsim3478
10.02.17 | i suppose my biggest complaint with this season is that a lot of the plots felt underwritten and many of the plot premises just didnt feel inspired to me at all. but i also thought the joke success rate was markedly lower than previous + there were way more action scenes and i usually find action scenes to be boring + the "deep" ideas didnt feel as well integrated into the plot as in previous seasons. imo season 2 was where the show hit its stride in every respect - super inventive plot ideas; consistently hilarious; less fighting, more funny exchanges between characters.
ranking:
1. Ricklantis Mixup (obviously)
2. Rickshank Redemption (good plot, humour and action)
3. Rest and Ricklaxation (good plot and humour)
4. Pickle Rick (gets kinda lame when they get to the government facility part but rest of it was pretty good; rat battle is best action sequence of the season)
5. Morty's Mind Blowers (sequences werent as consistent as the cable episode but still pretty good overall; squirrel part is GOAT)
6. Vindicators 3 (plot werent that great but some real good jokes here)
7. Rickchurian Mortydate (lacking in plot but fun)
8. ABCs of Beth (somehow flat despite gross subject matter; weak B plot as AR said)
9. Whirly Dirly (fucking boring; B plot better than A)
10. Rickmancing the Stone (garbage)
season overall: 5 or 6 out of 10 (way down from 7 or 8 for season 1, and 9 for season 2) |
MyNameIsPencil
10.02.17 | man season 3 was weak.
will it take another year and half for season 4? probably.
will the overall fanbase be the actual worse? yes |
dimsim3478
10.02.17 | "will it take another year and half for season 4? probably."
im fine with it taking that long as long as the product is really good
like i was fine with how long season 3 took because i trusted that it was gonna be really good
and it was only mediocre |
wwf
10.02.17 | re: the action scenes: it was kinda weird that they were a bit gratuitous, at least half the episodes had extended action scenes that the show would just kind of gloss over before, either because the writers always wanted to get to the actual point of the episode quicker or because of their animation budget or probably both
but most of the action scenes this season did a good job of advancing the plot too, and the only ones where it didn't really advance the plot (the ones in pickle rick and the season finale) are sort of intentionally gratuitous, since they're both Rick going on psychotic ego missions instead of paying attention to what people around him want
so overall I wouldn't say I have a problem with them including more action setpieces |
Papa Universe
10.02.17 | 1. Rickshank Redemption
2. Vindicators 3
3. Ricklantis Mixup
4. Pickle Rick
5. Morty's Mind Blowers
6. Rickchurian Mortydate
7. Whirly Dirly
8. Rest and Ricklaxation
9. Rickmancing the Stone
10. ABCs of Beth |
BlazinBlitzer
10.02.17 | The A plot of ABC's of Beth was fantastic, it's just that the B plot had been done by the show before and it didn't add any character development. |
wwf
10.02.17 | b plot was totally worth it just for the scenes of Morty and Summer being savage to Jerry tho |
Papa Universe
10.02.17 | I don't know, I thought that ABCs of Beth just fell flat on every aspect. Even the part that was obviously supposed to serve as that typical all-out-there laughterfest, where someone shows or tells you a series of absurd things you can't help, but laugh at, (when Rick shows Beth all of her childhood toys) didn't work all that well. It's an episode that tries hard, but doesn't succeed almost at all. Still, it's fairly fun and some of the jokes work really well, but it is still among the weakest offerings. |
hogan900
10.02.17 | Im not smart enough to understand the humor of this season
Was rly shit if you ask me aside from 3 episodes |
BlazinBlitzer
10.02.17 | To be fair... |
GreyShadow
10.02.17 | Definitely not my ranking. Season Finale was good. I thought the Beth clone plot was rushed but everything else worked. ABC's of Beth was hilarious and is a top 3 episode of this season for me. Vindicators and Rickmancing the Stone were the only 2 I didn't care much for. |
GreyShadow
10.02.17 | 2 > 1 > 3. The season has some great highs but the other 2 were far more consistent |
anarchistfish
10.02.17 | found the season a huge step back from 1 and 2 tbh |
anarchistfish
10.02.17 | rickshank redemption might be my favourite rick and morty episode though |
JaySpiral
10.02.17 | My problem with this season is that you can feel that they got new writers. So many jokes and dialogue felt like someone trying to write what THEY think a very "Rick-like" thing would be for him to say or do. I really liked that they were much more candid about the characters, making Beth and Jerry feel less like just a married couple like in the first two seasons. I love the development with Morty, showing he has a lot of cognitive dissonance in how he feels about himself and Rick and the family. But ultimately it felt more like they were trying to write based on watching the first to seasons, then writing how they THINK these characters would be or how they should be developed. I don't know, something just felt off. I still liked the season a lot though. The finale at least made me feel like a lot of the development with the characters throughout the season paid off, in that now the entire family is pretty much disillusioned with Rick's ways. Jerry is Rick's real weakness. Or at least a representation of it in many ways. And now Rick has to deal with the new family dynamic. |
GreyShadow
10.03.17 | I think the problem with this season is that it overall wasn't as funny and didn't always go the extra limit. Still incredibly enjoyable but definitely not as good as 1 or 2 |
someguest
10.03.17 | who still has cable
lmao |
VaxXi
10.03.17 | Pretty much the whole season but yeah |
TumsFestival
10.03.17 | I thought the execution of Mindblowers was p good, but the fact they opted out of doing a Cable episode this season was pretty dumb |
anarchistfish
10.03.17 | i thought morty's mind blowers was one of the better episodes of the season tbh. i wouldnt mind if they didn't do another interdimensional cable episode |
Papa Universe
10.03.17 | It's lazy in its concept, but at least the individual sketches are funny enough to carry the episode. |
Sinternet
10.03.17 | you guys realise that the cable episode in season 2 was by far the worst of the season right? it was just lazy fan service because people wouldn't shut up about another one, and lo and behold it was pretty boring and forced.
mindblowers was easily top 3 episodes of the season for me, because it managed to fit a lot of character development into stories and events that otherwise would have been exhausted if they were a full episode, plus a couple of visual one-liners that were pretty funny
also i don't get why people think worldender was that good, i thought it waspretty boring and mostly went for cheap laughs and stupid shit |
Trebor.
10.03.17 | Finale was definitely the worst |
Sinternet
10.03.17 | yeah basically completely false and unjustifiable opinion there |
FrozenVain
10.03.17 | Mindblowers and The Rickshank Redemption are good episode but the rest ranges from ok to bad. |
Sinternet
10.03.17 | i mean ricklantis mixup is pretty much the best episode they've ever made |
FrozenVain
10.03.17 | not even close |
Sinternet
10.03.17 | objectively incorrect |
TumsFestival
10.03.17 | agree that cable II was super weak, could have redeemed it this season but oh well |
Sinternet
10.03.17 | maybe, but i don't know if they could have struck gold again because the first one worked on it's own merits rather than just being a call back to a previous idea
i'm pretty glad the finale ended up going the way it did actually, if they had ended on a massive cliffhanger it would have been too predictable and it perfectly exemplified the character development within the series - people getting tired of rick and not buying into his stuff anymore leaving him with a dull and boring lifestyle he hates but has to perpetuate because deep down he does actually care vs. season 2 where beth wasso emotionally hung up on rick that it forced him to make what at the time seemed a rare act of heroism that had been building on the on-running theme during season 2 that rick did actually care
also ftr rickmancing the stone was definitely the big glaring low point of the season, damn that episode sucked, which is annoying because judging from the first season summer had by far the most potential in terms of character development and now she's probably the most boring main character |
wwf
10.03.17 | Yeah Summer ruled in the first episode of this season but got to be a little more dull as the season went on. Not too bad tho |
ChoccyPhilly
10.03.17 | Summer only got one episode that involved her in the main plot though, which sucked. Like I know it's RICK and MORTY but come on, some variety, please! |
wwf
10.03.17 | She got two and a half or so and rickmancing the stone wasnt that great but it had its moments |
Jasdevi087
10.03.17 | pretty much any time this season wasn't trying to be funny, it was awful, and most of the time when it was trying to be funny, it wasn't funny |
Orb
10.03.17 | I've yet to see any of S3 yet. I should get on it |
MeatSalad
10.03.17 | Easily the worst season out of the 3, vindicators ep was by far the worst btw. That Logic part was pure shit |
MeatSalad
10.03.17 | Most of the rest was good, they do need to dial back on the self referential humor though |
ChoccyPhilly
10.03.17 | Yeah, they Logic part was totally unnecessary and just felt like them flexing their popularity and power now. They ought to reduce the irl reference jokes too, there were way too many of them this season |
ckypro3
10.06.17 | vindicators was a case of the show just relying on shock humor too much. least fav this season, even if Million Ants is an instant classic character. |
