| DinosaurJones' Rec Contest ROUND 1
Why not, right? I had so much fun with ZombieToyDuck's rec contest, and I've been wanting to do one for awhile. With his contest wrapping up, I'll start my own.
ROUND ONE CRITERIA: Gotta have that brass! Rec me a song that has brass in it. It can be the entire song, a solo, or a single riff, but it's gotta have some kind of brass in it. I'll take up to 30 submissions, and anything I rate below 3.5 will be eliminated! | 1 | | George Michael Ladies & Gentlemen: The Best of George Michael
Careless Whisper may have the best saxophone riff ever. Though I think technically the saxophone is a woodwind, but FUCK IT. | 2 | | Foxing The Albatross
MyCarandMyGuitar
Rory - A cold, lonely vibe to this one, which the lyrics only help to reinforce. Even as more and more instruments come in, it never truly warms up, and still keeps that lonesome feeling (once again credited to the lyrics). Once the trumpets come in, there's finally a bit of a feeling of warmth and comfort, until they end on a discordant note, leaving only the drums to trail off, all alone... Yes, I will have to check this entire album.
4.4/5 | 3 | | Martin O'Donnell Halo 3: ODST OST
Drifter
Deference for Darkness - I am kind of a sucker for video game OSTs. Though I never played Halo, because I'm a Sony fanboy through and through. That said, this is a very beautiful and well composed piece of music. The somber piano and the saxophone lend a very melancholy feel to the track, which I would have expected to be more bombastic... and then the electronics kick in. I gotta be honest, that kinda kills the mood for me. Maybe it makes more sense in context, but that bit from 3:15 all the way to the end doesn't do much for me, it'd be much better if it were 2 different tracks. ...Let's pretend it was 2 different tracks.
4/5 | 4 | | Novelists Noir
SteakByrnes
Monochrome - Shit, bruh. This has a very desolate feel to it, though I love the bass. It's simple, but really fits the feel to the song, and just as I'm wondering how/when some brass will fit in, that lonely saxophone comes weaving in, distant and beautiful. The solo in this song rips, honestly. And then as things calm down at the end, the saxophone comes calling again, from far away. I feel the ending drags on a bit, but still a great track!
4.2/5 | 5 | | Danny Brown XXX
ZombieToyDuck
30 - Jesus, everything that Danny Brown does is so delightfully off-kilter. I'm sure part of it is in his delivery, but the beat and instrumentation in this song really give a feeling of unease and discomfort, which I'm sure is the point. This is an intense song, damn. And as a closer, everything must culminate and lead up to this, but even on its own, this is a hell of a track. I might even end up rating this one higher if I hear the entire album.
4.7/5 | 6 | | Woods Love Is Love
UniqueUniverse
Bleeding Blue - I'm finding this pleasant enough, but as the song goes on, it sort of becomes more and more background noise to me. Not in a bad way, but in the sense that it doesn't really go anywhere special, repeating the same motifs over and over. This is a song that would benefit from being chopped down by perhaps a minute or a minute and a half, unless the ending goes somewhere special...
... and it does not.
3.5/5. You made it, but I hope next round (whatever it is?) is a little better. | 7 | | Frameworks Small Victories
TheSpirit
Old Chokes - Boy, did I not know what to expect with this one. The skram vox really caught me off guard, but damn, the music is beautiful! I'm kind of at a loss of how to describe it. I'm getting a Maybeshewill vibe, with vox, and the way the trumpets weave in with the mathy guitar over a breakdown... what... what is this? I don't know, but I love it!
4.7/5 | 8 | | Cake Prolonging The Magic
WatchItExplode
Never There - Damn son, I have not heard this song in yearssss. It's gotta be on one of the first "Now That's What I Call Music" CDs, right? I'm going to look it up right now! Yep. It's on NOW 2. '99, baby. Cake is the band that's known to have Trumpet and Vibraslap in every song, and this song makes good on both of those. Unfortunately, I don't find it to be a very compelling track. I do like Cake, but this has alway been a weaker Cake track, imo.
3.2/5
***ELIMINATED*** | 9 | | Marietta Summer Death
Conmaniac
Chase, I Hardly Know Ya - Very emo feel to this track, in the vein of Empire! Empire! or American Football, though markedly more upbeat. And I don't know who the first genius was to start putting trumpets into this kind of music, but they deserve a medal. Defnitely enjoyable enough, but I kind of found myself losing interest as the song went on. Still, it's one that I could see myself listening to again.
3.7/5 | 10 | | Timber Timbre Hot Dreams
Frivolous
Hot Dreams - A very laid-back, dreamy, somewhat jazzy track. Definitely a pleasant voice as well, but it's just... not that interesting to me? I'm zoning out to it, not in an "all blissed out" way, but in an "I'm losing interest" kind of way. It's definitely a pleasant enough, and the horns are a very welcome addition by the time they show up, but not enough to save the entire track for me.
2.9/5
***ELIMINATED*** | 11 | | Gorillaz Gorillaz
bloc
Rock the House - I think I remember liking this song more than I currently do. I haven't heard it in quite some time, though this was one of the first albums I ever bought (I had to hide the Parental Advisory sticker from my dad). It's definitely a chill track, the horn stabs really add a lot to the instrumentation, which is actually pretty sparse as a whole. This album was all over the place, but this track holds its own, and Del's flow is pretty good. Definitely an earworm of a track.
3.6/5 | 12 | | Maximum Joy Station M.X.J.Y.
butcherboy
Searching for a Feeling - Ah, man, I'm really enjoying the music in this. But those vox are not doing anything for me. Well, they are, they're detracting from the entire thing. It's definitely got that funk and that groove, the bass is phenomenal. The horns get a little atonal and screechy at times, but if I'm to understand it correctly, that's part of what makes this no-wave. It definitely held me rapt for the entire track, but yeah... not digging those vox.
3.6/5 | 13 | | Ween La Cucaracha
ArsMoriendi
The Fiesta - Ah, yes... an abundance of horns. You weren't wrong. Now, I've never listened to Ween, and their reputation precedes them as an... eclectic(?) band. That said, this really isn't a bad track. It's also not a great track, IMO. It kind of sounds like stock music at a baseball game or something. You know, you go to a sporting event, and the announcers are all "Sorry, folks, the third baseman has to go take a massive dumpski! Please enjoy the music!" and then the mascot comes out and does a little dance... Yeah.
2.5/5 ***ELIMINATED*** | 14 | | Clever Girl No Drum And Bass in the Jazz Room
Sinternet
Elm - I've been meaning to check this album out, so thanks for the rec, Sint. I'm immediately into it, I love this sort of math/post-rock feel. And the sax laid over the guitar lends an extra layer of beauty and depth to the melody. Oh, baby, I am a sucker for this kind of stuff. And that switch about 3 minutes in.. Hnnngghhh... BA DA BAH BAH!!
5/5 GOT DAMN, BOIIII | 15 | | Do Make Say Think Other Truths
SCREAM!
Do - This is another band I've been meaning to check out, so this gives me an excuse to do so. This feels like a much "looser" variant of post-rock, more meandering and jammy than structured to hit those highs and lows that have pretty much become the standard. Though I'm sure this isn't the case since it's being put on record, this track sounds a lot more spontaneous than your EitS or your GY!BE. Unfortunately, it feels like the length of the song hinders more than helps in this case, because while a great track, it feels like a lot of repetition, just adding more and more layers over the same things. Of course, I know that's a standard post-rock formula, so by the time the trumpets come in, it definitely gives it a boost.
4/5 | 16 | | Typhoon (USA-OR) White Lighter
bgillesp
Young Fathers - The start-stop dynamic to this song is pretty cool, but a lot of the elements aren't really coming together for me. I enjoy the instrumentation, but as a personal thing, I don't really like the guy's voice/style of singing. It's pleasant enough, but it's not something I would see myself coming back to, and nothing really grabbed me.
3.3/5
***ELIMINATED*** | 17 | | Bon Iver For Emma, Forever Ago
neekafat
For Emma - And album I'm sure I should have heard long ago, given how long I've been on Sput, but I've never been good about checking the "classics," if you will. And I don't want to commit Sput blasphemy, but... I'm not finding this too compelling. Maybe it's because I'm at work and I'm not giving this it's just due, but it's just nice background noise to me. It's not bad, but it's also not amazing, either. Maybe the entire album as a whole would be better?
3.3/5
***ELIMINATED*** | 18 | | *shels Plains Of The Purple Buffalo
kingdedethefifth
Journey to the Plains - Whoa, this one starts with an aural kick to the face, immediately, before dropping out and building back up. They really nailed the title to this song, and I'm really loving the dynamics in it. The sparse vocals really add a lot to the track, I'm almost getting some ISIS vibes, though somewhat less crushing. A journey is definitely a good word for this track.
3.9/5 | 19 | | Katzenjammer Le Pop
Dewinged
A Bar in Amsterdam - Ahahaha, this is definitely different from a lot of the stuff I've been getting, but yeah, definitely high energy! This really WOULD be a hell of a bar jam, and it would be a fun bar. If I came across a band jamming out this style, I'd probably be in that bar all night, and I don't even drink. A lot of folky instrumentation, and I find the singer's voice to be very nice. The song has a lot going on, and gives an unbridled, loose feeling without getting too chaotic. Good stuff!
4.1/5 | 20 | | Radiohead Kid A
Dctarga
The National Anthem - Despite the heaps of praise loaded onto Radiohead by, well... pretty much EVERYONE, I feel like I never "got" them, you know what I mean? I'm not a Radiohead hater, I'm just very neutral towards them. That said, this song presents a nice, chilled-out groove, driven forward by the bass. And again, I'm finding myself jamming out to it a bit, but still wondering what the big deal is. Enjoyable though, and more than enough for a pass.
3.8/5 | 21 | | Neutral Milk Hotel In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
onionbubs
King of Carrot Flowers pts. 2 & 3 - Wasn't this album like... the indie bible for a little while? Is it still? This is another of those albums that I've been meaning to hear, but never got around to (I'm pretty bad at getting around to checking things out). I didn't really expect the switch up to a faster tempo with the fuzzed-out guitars, but it was a welcome change, though the beginning of the song was quite nice. I don't particularly dig the singer's voice, but he's not terrible either, and you can't win 'em all. Overall, a nice little ditty that I could see myself going back to.
3.8/5 | 22 | | JC Chasez Schizophrenic
BeyondCosby (Placeholder, because this is the first thing that popped up, and I don't think Chase is in the DB)
Chase - Get It On : Going oldschool on this one, huh? I always dug this sort of older funky vibe. Reminiscent of James Brown or Isaac Hayes, this song is full of upbeat horns, keys and bass. Not quite my bag, but it's a catchy enough song. I'd be intrigued to check out more though.

11.29.17 | Does a sax count?
EDIT: After seeing your comment on the George Michael song I'll assume yes lmao | DinosaurJones
11.29.17 | I'm allowing the saxophone, because although it's a woodwind, it is primarily made of brass and is also the sexiest goddamn instrument. | Drifter

11.29.17 | Yeah I hate that you have to wait a bit after updating to update again. Mine is food though? | Papa Universe
11.29.17 | Is it just me or is Careless Whisper actually the worst song in history of everything ever? | Drifter
11.29.17 | It's pretty overrated | DinosaurJones
11.29.17 | I've heard far worse things than Careless Whisper. It is a bit overrated though, yeh. | ZombieToyDuck

11.29.17 | Off of Somewhere in the Between | DinosaurJones
11.29.17 | You have my word, bgillesp. Though I gotta say, I didn't overtly say nothing I've heard before in the description, it should be known that Streetlight is one of my top 3 favorite bands and I'm inherently biased towards them... so... can you toss me a different rec? It'd be kind of unfair to give you a free pass right to the next round. | Conmaniac
11.29.17 | Marietta - chase, I hardly know ya | DinosaurJones

11.29.17 | dude that frameworks track is dope | ZombieToyDuck
11.29.17 | yeah cut him a break Dino | Drifter
11.29.17 | Only a 4? Man that song's a 5/5 for me. Thanks so much for letting that slide.
And it doesn't work in context btw. It's just a random electronic/battle track tacked on to the end of a beautiful arrangement for no good reason. In the game it just loops the song or goes to another song like that when just wandering around | TumsFestival
11.29.17 | oh fuck my dude I meant Rory by Foxing my bad!!! glad you dug that track tho man | DinosaurJones
11.29.17 | I'm cool with changing it, I dug the one you rec'd for sure, but yeah... no brass, haha. | Sinternet
