10 | | Oxbow Thin Black Duke
Weird, eclectic post-punk. Eugene Robinson brings a very disturbing energy to this album. An energy that grabs you and doesn't let you look away. He's like a chameleon. The album's full of meaty post-punk greatness all through out with its own very unique quirks. Will definitely get into their back catalogue. |
9 | | Uncommon Nasa Written at Night
Solid and meaty underground hip hop. What more could you ask for? Definitely better than the Armand Hammer record. The production is tight, the features are awesome, etc. |
8 | | Rosalia Los Angeles
7 | | Iglooghost Neo Wax Bloom
THIS I MUST WRITE IN THE IGLOOGHOST STYLE. (SEE HIS TWITTER) NEO WAX BLOOM IS LIT AF AND IT BRINGS ALL THE JOYFUL, PLAYFUL BANGERS. BANGERS!! IT IS FUN AS FUCK AND BRINGS A HUGE AMOUNT OF VARIETY TO THE TABLE. IGLOOGHOST HAS A HUGE FUTURE AHEAD OF HIM AS HE IS THE FUNNEST AND MOST LIKEABLE PRODUCER OUT THERE RIGHT NOW. HE'S A REAL COOL GUY TOO. |
6 | | Bicep Bicep
Feel that bicep, motherfucker. This is the best electronic record of 2017. By the end of its run time you might feel like this album is very by the numbers for the genre. While it's not breaking any boundaries it strives in its tight and solid grooves and melodies. It's very much a danceable record, but it can also be very meditative. Listen to this thing. It's no pushover. I often listen to this while making art and it rules. |
5 | | Perfume Genius No Shape
Dark, beautiful and glamorous. This record is very much theatrical, eccentric and moving. It's sways you from the very start and floors you again and again and again. At points it might feel like a shapeless endeavour, but when it comes to a close you feel a very surreal satisfaction. It's a gorgeously produced, gorgeously sung album. His best so far, in my opinion. |
4 | | Ibibio Sound Machine Uyai
All the colors. The funky afro beats of Ibibio Sound Machine are gorgeous and fun as hell. Their fronted by the amazing Eno Williams who does a great job at making these tracks really pop. From front to back this was one of funnest records this decade. |
3 | | Algiers The Underside of Power
Woah! I did not know who these guys were before this album came out. They're insanely good. It's like they make post-punk music for the soul. It's politically charged and emotionally potent. Lead singer Franklin James Fisher really steals the show here. Like, holy shit. He goes all out. I'm definitely checking their debut out. We all need Algiers in our lives in 2017. |
2 | | A/T/O/S Outboxed
The A Taste Of Struggle LP came out three years ago and I delved into it around a year ago. It's a mesmerizing mix of moody, dark, soulful 21st century trip hop that just leaves you wanting more. Their new album is more of that but with a few twists here and there. Like the trap flavored rattling high-hats on Give It Up. The album is more of what I love from this band, but it went under the radar for most people this year. |
1 | | Brockhampton Saturation
The Saturation trilogy has been the most enigmatic set of hip hop albums to come out in the last decade. The group blends and experiments with hip hop, emo and pop seemlessly. They're energetic, hungry, witty and gay as fuck. Sat1 being the birth of if all. With its off-kilter production, pitched voice, weird sampling, beautiful beats, and bangers galore. Sat2 took everything and turned it to 11. Everything that made 1 so good was here, but the record took a more G Funk feel. Sat3 is the poppiest of the bunch but also contains the group's weirdest tracks weirdly enough. Their production is lively, weird and oh so colorful. If you still haven't jumped on the BRCKHMPTN bandwagon I suggest you do. |
