Q1: Atari’s 2018 Highlights

Year started out slow, but suddenly there are more than 2 handfuls of albums I've really enjoyed! Feel free to share what you've enjoyed or rec me something
1Senses Fail
If There Is Light, It Will Find You

Gets extra points for nostalgia. Simultaneously has some of their catchiest and most poignant tracks. Best closer since Priest and the Matador
2Brandi Carlile
By the Way, I Forgive You

Her lyrics are incredible, as is her performance. More country than folk at times. My first album by her, but I'm pretty blown away
3Johanna Warren
Gemini II

Dewi rec. Hadn't heard her before, but love the darker lyrics here. Definitely not what you'd call sunny indie folk, but there's something gorgeous going on here through the darker shades. Kind of like Des Ark.
4Runaway Brother
New Pocket

Canopy Eyes and All Saints Day are unexpected tracks. On par with the debut, but often a lot more restrained and relaxed in tone; it's more experimental as well
5Super Whatevr
Never Nothing

Was the first emo album of 2018 I fell in love with. It's a blast, and the closing track kicks so much ass
6Anna Burch
Quit The Curse

Lucid rec. Has probably dropped a bit at this point, but the first indie singer/songwriter I really loved this year.
7Brigid Mae Power
The Two Worlds

Was immediately hooked with the opening track, "I'm Grateful". She makes such powerful tunes within a limited space, utilizing looping guitar drones and other gentle touches. And yeah, there are some really nice Celtic influences throughout as well.
8Brian Fallon
Sleepwalkers

While I agree a lot of these songs sound like Brian Fallon parodying himself, it doesn't stop "Sleepwalkers" from having some of the stronger tracks of his career. "Etta James" and "I am the Night (Color me Black)" are highly engaging rock songs, with HUGE choruses. And it's still nostalgic as hell; Brian Fallon is still a man concerned with the "good ol' days".
9Alela Diane
Cusp

At times, the concept is more intriguing than the album itself. It's a reaction to Diane's near-death experience giving childbirth, and while it doesn't always convince, it's full of some real gems: "Albatross, "Émigré", and especially "Ether & Wood" help you forget that some of the other tracks are just kinda there.
10Tiny Moving Parts
Swell

That music video to "Caution" with the broom/rake guitar noodling is still one of my favorite moments of 2017. I prefer "Celebrate", but this is still very solid, albeit a bit predictable
11Summoning
With Doom We Come

If you're not a huge stickler for perfect production, this has some of the coolest melodies in Summoning's discog scattered throughout
12Emily A. Sprague
Water Memory

The solo ambient project from the girl behind Florist (NY). Another Lucid Rec I believe. I liked it, but wasn't blown away EDIT; Was released in Dec 2017 OOPS
13Glen Hansard
Between Two Shores

This is only album I've heard by him, so maybe that explains why I seem to enjoy it more than some others here. I have nothing else to compare it to, but thought it was good for what it is.
14The Dangerous Summer
The Dangerous Summer

Better comeback than I was expecting honestly. Far from perfect, but "Ghosts" hits hard every damn time. I saw someone else compare the vocals to Have Mercy and I am in full agreement
15Loma
Loma

Was a grower, but I’m glad I have it more time. See Jack/Blush collab review that describes it much better than I ever could
16soccer mommy
Clean

Gorgeous indie-pop/rock that gets better with each listen. Standout tracks: "Scorpio Rising" and "Wildflowers"
17Haley Heynderickx
I Need to Start a Garden

One of the early AOTY contenders for me. Shout out to Blush for getting me into her in the first place with his review for her EP. This is a huge step up from that. Angel Olsen-esque vocals, amazing lyrics/instrumentation, lots of variety; this album has it all
18S. Carey
Hundred Acres

Really nice listen that I've been returning to more the last few days. The title track is my jam on this. Sounds eerily similar to Sufjan Stevens and Iron & Wine at times, so if that's your thing...
19Sojourner
The Shadowed Road

The opening track is nothing short of epic. Kind of reminds me more of last year's Pallbearer or Elder (US-MA) vs. your typical black metal folk band.
20Rota Fortunae
Solstice

Can’t stress how good this EP is. Great mix of neofolk/neoclassical for fans of Musk Ox, Vali. The production is wonderful - nice job DungeonBoy! Check Bnelso55’s review
21Anna von Hausswolff
Dead Magic

This is my first experience with her and it was a hauntingly beautiful one. Love the whole dark ambient thing she has going on. Expect very eerie organs and long, brooding song structures
22Long Neck
Will This Do?
23Lucy Dacus
Historian
24Katie Herzig
Moment of Bliss
25Judas Priest
Firepower
26McCafferty
Yarn
27Liza Anne
Fine But Dying
28Frankie Cosmos
Vessel
