| slide into those DMs | 1 | | Abominable Putridity The Anomalies of Artificial Origin
I wouldn't consider myself a fan of brutal slamming death metal but I really just fucking love this album. It's a pretty intelligent implementation of lug-headed slams, and Matti "let me show you da" Way, is the best gurgler in the biz. After a few years of uncertainty, it seems these dudes are about to release some new material which I am very excited for. | 2 | | Pathologist Putrefactive and Cadaverous Odes About Necroticism
Most Carcass-core is almost ironically clinical production-wise, but on their debut Pathologist managed to not only successfully imitate the style of Symphonies of Sickness-era Carcass, but the bile smothered production that made that album so sick, twisted, yet enjoyable. | 3 | | Exhumation (GR) Seas of Eternal Silence
Grecian metal typically has a very distinct and noticeable regional flair. I often find it very melodious and tinged with gothic melancholy. Exhumation was a Greek OSDM band that didn't shy away from the genre's penchant for technical brutality, but also wasn't afraid to spice it up with heaps of classic metal melody. This is probably one of the better albums to mix the two in a way that services the album, but doesn't come of ostentatious or "try-hard". Very good, very underrated. | 4 | | Carcass Necroticism: Descanting the Insalubrious
Speaking of Carcass, I know this is one of their most highly-regarded albums that gets praised all the time, but I could gush over this record for years (and I have!). Maybe it's because they were British and far removed from the US OSDM scene or maybe it's because of their roots in grind and anarcho-punk, but Carcass always had a distinct feel, one that exemplified the repugnance of their lyrical content but still exuded the bizarre virtuosity of death metal. Most OSDM was known for being filthy, these guy up to this album, were the filthiest. | 5 | | Heresiarch Death Ordinance
Sometimes I think about extreme metal - particularly innovators like Mayhem, Darkthrone, or in this case, Blasphemy - and am awestruck that such extreme forms of music have continued to endure for decades. New Zealand's Heresiarch carry of the torch of the Ross Bay Cult, a sect of Canadian extremity that has produced the aforementioned Blasphemy alongside a score of other like-minded and equally as divisive metal acts. Death Ordinance is probably their best portrayal of that sound as of yet, bringing the sound of metal back to when it felt a bit more dangerous. | 6 | | Prosanctus Inferi Noctambulous Jaws Within Sempiternal Night
Prostanctus Inferi is a band I will forever attempt to get some more attention. Their earlier material exemplified a certain branch of Midwestern US blackened filth, and by the time of this album they had evolved into a full-blown death metal monstrosity. Think the angular and unexpected riffage of early Morbid Angel with the tunnel-visioned aggression of Angelcorpse and you get an idea as to what they sound like. | 7 | | Battlemaster Warthirsting & Winterbound
I usually try and avoid super cleanly produced modern death metal, but I was introduced to this band by a friend and though I never really got into their other material, really like this album. It's some weird combination of death/black/thrash metal that is as triumphant as it is heavy. | |
