I honestly think the 90s in general was the last era where hearts were worn on sleeves. Things really mattered. Nobody gave a fuck about how they sold themselves it was all about ‘the music club’ ‘the latest clothing label’ ‘ ‘the pre-match pint’ ‘the gang mentality with your mates on holiday’
Obviously that’s a cultural thing but now the culture has been eroded by an almighty homogeneous global social media glob of nothing. |

04.02.18 | One thing gets worse, find a better alternative.'
But better alternatives arent always an option. Thats a massive over simplification. And missing the point as there arent alterantives nowadays that compare. You have to make alternatives thats part of life. The point about buying a demo and writing a letter to a band etc was one of connection and was more so alluding to the old HxC scene. Society now is disconnected. Even just buying a ton of CDs every month maybe 5 or 6 Id never heard before and sitting down with it and reading it etc Finding music on the whole is much better than when I was a kid but there is most definitely a throw away disconnect with people downloading albums. Thats not even debatable. And something im most guilty of also.

Go and simply support someone else?
You find alternatives where you can of course, But its a completely different world form the 90s (obviously) And thats not saying there arent MANY sweet thingsabout being alive today , there are.
Porn is WELL better for example. Having to wait to borrow a VHS form some shady guy in work/school and then find the time when nobody was home to use the Video recorder sucked!

Dragon Ball is the perfect example. the DBZ animation and art style in the 90's was just cold. Dragon Ball super 20 years later looks like straight ass cheeks |
CalculatingInfinity
04.02.18 | @deezer: What I said find an alternative, I should have been clearer to say that it doesn't have to particularly be a competitive alternative to the thing you don't enjoy anymore. It can be finding an alternative product or a new hobby/band etc altogether; kinda sucks doing that but it's far better than being sad over something you will never have again. Like your point with your football club yes I agree there is no direct replacement for that, however, something else needs to fill the void. I'm just suggesting that being happy with the fact such a nice thing was there and making a better tomorrow is much better than complaining about the fact it isn't there anymore. Also what connection? What connection does writing that letter to a band compared to creating something from scratch yourself and why is it better?
Regarding your point about a disconnected society, now that I can't agree with more. The internet has killed communities, everything is far more insular and that is terrible for mental health. The social aspect of activities is barely there in comparison to what it was.
@Key: Yeah it looks arse. I really like how anime looks today however, it has different strengths compared to 90's stuff. For example more simple and relaxed shows I prefer nowadays than with the 90's style. |
Deez
04.02.18 | @calc Dude youve got me confused for someone who cries in the corner about the 90s being gone!Ive travelled to over 35 countries since then, Im fine. Im just Reminiscing in this thread! You get on with life, New alternatives pop up of course sure you might not get sweet af music videos on MTV anymore but weve got Youtube for example but the point was missing the 90s and why they were better and they were. Crowds were. Because the masses hadnt been as Desensitized to everything as much as nowadays.Jesus I cant make faces at a kid on the train because his parents are terrified im gonna snatch him and put him in my cellar ( I might ) Sure the footballs shitter than it was its not gonna stop me going.
You're comparing my point about writing to receive a demo to 'creating something yourself' I dont get the relevance.Im not talking about creating anything myself. Im comparing having to write to a band to get a demo therefore making a connection with said band, Having a physical thing in your hands with lyrics etc etc to downloading however many records online a week and simply deleting them. It took time to do and therefore more patience in the listening and more respect for what it was, which can be said about downloading in general. The act of having do something, Anything, other than pressing download made that connection more tangible and real and less 'throwaway'. Eveything nowadays seems so 'now' and simply 'throw away'. |

04.02.18 | @deezer: In terms of being desensitised, unfortunately nothing can be really done to stop that. It makes 'lesser' content appear that much cooler I got to admit. For the demo point I thought you meant writing to bands and such to promote the demo, not for the band's demo yourself. That makes far more sense. I agree with the notion of having something tangible makes you develop a more personal relationship with your music. Something that I liked was in the Cannibal Corpse documentary was sending and sharing tapes through the mail, thought that was badass so in terms of local bands, that's something which exists less here. As a counterpoint though, the option to still invest in albums in multiple formats still remains. In fact in some aspects downloading helps you in that regard, for example myself. There's stuff that would cost me £60 or more that I wouldn't try before listening to it first, and download allows me to do that. If it wasn't for downloading, I wouldn't have a collection with a bunch of rare items to call my own. |
Deez
04.03.18 | the demo point I thought you meant writing to bands and such to promote the demo'
Ahhh ok gotcha hahah thought I was going mental there. I'm with you Re downloads man there's good and bad points which have been done a million times over. I love I can get through so much more and there's less chance of missing something I really like . But when I think back of how you'd take a chance on a CD just randomly,I dunno, you were parting with cash and it was almost like gambling and when you unearthed a treasure it was so awesome. Coming home with 15 cos and some vinyl and not knowing if you'd even like 3 of them they just appealed. Again it's the tangible thing. It's the investment of your time. That's gone for a lot of people . You can download something and make a decision right away. There are many gems I'd find I didn't like initially but I spent more time with because id actually bought them. This isn't a major thing about the 90s though haha just something I remember.
