| List 222
...is a good name for either a 90's-era metalcore act or an early aughts post-grunge band, and nothing else between. This list goes to 11. | 1 | | Loma Loma
Been sitting on this one for too long. Really interesting stuff here, musically, and her voice is absolutely goddamned gorgeous. Check out "I Don't Want Children" and feel yourself wash away. | 2 | | Canadian Softball Awkward and Depressed
A bit overlong, but definitely many more hits than misses on this bad boy. Ironically, some of the more straight-forward parodies are the weaker tracks, but the stylistic homages really nail it to an uncomfortable degree more often than not. Haven't heard much else by this fellow, but this has certainly piqued my interest to do a deeper dive. | 3 | | Jonny Greenwood You Were Never Really Here
A jarring and forceful, yet at times hauntingly tender and evocative sonic backdrop to one of the best films of the year so far (tied with Annihilation in my book, for the record). Also an interesting contrast to his much more conventionally cinematic (which, for Greenwood, is ironically unconventional) work for Phantom Thread--also worth many a listen in its own right. | 4 | | A Perfect Circle Eat the Elephant
Gotta digest this one a bit more. Initially, it feels somewhat disappointing, but I'm hoping repeated listens lead to a deeper appreciation, which is what happened with me and basically all the pre-release singles, even the initially somewhat cringe-inducing "Disillusioned." | 5 | | The Amazing In Transit
Another need-to-listen-to-more entry, but one that's left a more favorable first impression. Been on a bit of an Amazing kick lately, and early takeaways paint this as a worthy successor to the vastly underrated (or under-listened-to, at least) Ambulance. | 6 | | The Coma Recovery Apotheosis
Glad to see this band still active, even if it's only with an EP. Still, $2 for 3 songs ain't bad, especially when the songs are all top-notch. Any eagle-eyed aficionados out there know anything about a physical release? | 7 | | Daughter Music From Before the Storm
Slacking hard here, but finally busting out my turntable this weekend, and first up is this top acquisition from Record Store Day. Already know a lot of these songs from streaming them, but full stereo should hopefully put them under an even more flattering new light. | 8 | | The National Boxer Live in Brussels
Another RSD snag, and again, one I feel bad for not unwrapping and enjoying sooner. In my defense, I *have* been spinning the CD of the studio version (as well as its neighbors in the discography, Alligator and High Violet) quite a bit in anticipation. | 9 | | Quicksand Triptych Continuum
Yet another RSD-er, one I missed in-store but was luckily able to grab at Bullmoose's yearly leftover sale, which really is a godsend for collectors. Only an EP, unfortunately, but if it's up to the quality of their latest full-length, should be great stuff right here. | 10 | | Tricot The
Grabbed this on vinyl recently, as well, another on-deck play in the not-so-distant future. Have only heard 3, so far, which is apparently a bit of a different sound, but excited for what this has in store. | 11 | | The Wonder Years Sister Cities
A-yup, more vinyl. Pumped for this one, saw them perform live and acoustic about a month back at my local record shop the week of its release, and it was great stuff. | |
