Doof's Deep Dive Series: 1994
The first of a MULTI part series of lists, starting at my favourite year for music and the era I feel most at home. This is a countdown of my top 100 1994 albums, all are rated 3.5 or above (10 rate at a 5), and to find this many albums I enjoy I went pretty deep (yup). Career Bests get a {CB}, and a New Entry (found during the deep dive) is marked [NE] and also there's a mixtape of 10 songs that particularly impress me that are a little obscure (possibly). Enjoy! Next up will be 1995...then 1993...then 1996...then 1992....etc etc, and I'll give each a month of exploration. Recs for the next list (1995) welcome. |

Wasn't sure what to expect after clappin eyes on the cover, but this is some great lo-fi indie rock with some more expansive tendencies too. |

5/5 {CB} |
10 | | Smoke (USA) Heaven On A Popsicle Stick

Another new 5, and this is your typical Doof album - I believe every year probably has a Doc Corbin Dart 'Patricia' style cult classic and this is another in the style. The vocals are somewhere between Nick Cave, Tom Waits and Michael Fassbender as 'Frank'. Also the most gay 'not gay sounding' album ever - I mean one of these songs is a love song to Luke Perry's feet.

66 | | korn Korn
3.5/5 {CB} |
67 | | Meat Puppets Too High To Die

Really surprised by this, never a huge fan of MP - this more polished album works so well for them it is close to being my favourite of theirs.
CLASSIC SONG OF THE 90s YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T HEARD: 'Backwater' |

These are almost new metal heroes for me, something about their genre switching seems very 'millenial metal' but hey, these dudes did it first and better. I was thinking 'here they're ripping off Draconian Times a little bit...then realised this came out before that album. Not quite as good as Crimson but very close. |
74 | | A.C. Acoustics Able Treasury
[NE] 3.5/5
Solid alt rock band |
75 | | Tiamat Wildhoney
[NE] 3.5/5
This was also another unexpectedly decent metal album. |
76 | | Brainiac Bonsai Superstar
3.5/5 |
77 | | Unwound New Plastic Ideas
[NE] 3.5/5
Like Fugazi in just how damn consistent they seem to be |
78 | | The Church Sometime Anywhere
[NE] 3.5/5
Expected the worst but this has a bit of magic. You need to drop the three worst songs from the album to really enjoy it (too long, some songs don't fit).
CLASSIC SONG OF THE 90s YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T HEARD: 'Loveblind' |
79 | | Ian McNabb Head Like A Rock
[NE] 3.5/5 {CB}
Being a bit of a silly billy putting this above the Neil Young & Crazy Horse album...but this does feature Crazy Horse and I don't know it is just more enjoyably cheesy.
CLASSIC SONG OF THE 90s YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T HEARD: 'Fire Inside My Soul' |
80 | | Neil Young Sleeps with Angels
[NE] 3.5/5 |
81 | | Machine Head Burn My Eyes
3.5/5 {CB}
All these years later, still burns my thighs |
82 | | Nature and Organisation Beauty Reaps the Blood of Solitude
[NE] 3.5/5 {CB}
Want to like this more but the vocals aren't 100% my thing. Instrumentally very appealing though.
CLASSIC SONG OF THE 90s YOU PROBABLY HAVEN'T HEARD: 'Tears for an Eastern Girl' |

3.5/5 {CB} |
84 | | David Byrne David Byrne
3.5/5 |
85 | | Terrorvision How To Make Friends And Influence People
3.5/5 {CB}
Yes it's a cheesy and dated album but it's still a classic of sorts, certainly their best. |
86 | | Daniel Johnston Fun
[NE] 3.5/5 |
87 | | Shellac At Action Park
[NE] 3.5/5
Might be underrating this one. |
88 | | Cranes Loved
[NE] 3.5/5
Deserves to be loved a bit though not as intriguing as their earlier material. |
89 | | Danzig Danzig 4
3.5/5
A little underrated this one. |
90 | | sugar File Under: Easy Listening
[NE] 3.5/5
Hmmm, not far below 'Copper Blue' and actually it sounds a bit meatier...just that it has more songs than CB and not as many good songs as CB. Still, much better than anticipated. |
91 | | Further Sometimes Chimes
[NE] 3.5/5 {CB}
Real scrappy but there's a great album hidden in here. |
92 | | Spectrum Highs, Lows and Heavenly Blows
[NE] 3.5/5 {CB}
Spacey fluff but i enjoyed it. |
93 | | The Wedding Present Watusi
[NE] 3.5/5
Another band I'm not blown away by but even though this was more polished I think it might be my favourite by them. Sorry. |
94 | | Disco Inferno D.I. Go Pop
3.5/5 |
95 | | Jeru the Damaja The Sun Rises in the East
[NE] 3.5/5 |
96 | | Julian Cope Autogeddon
