Neek's Q3 2018: Films

List of films I've seen these last few months plus explanations why not.
1Hasan
Province of the Unknown

Sicario: Day of the Soldado: 2/5
A messy and morally questionable sequel that is both a disservice to itself as much as it is the ambiguous original thanks to retconning the characters into sympathetic anti-heroes and not even having a third act.
2Courtney Barnett and Kurt Vile
Lotta Sea Lice

Ant-Man and the Wasp: 3/5
The first Marvel film I've seen in years that seems to be content in having nothing to prove, and the steps Marvel has recently taken in strong villains, visuals, and stories seem to have all evaporated in the process. Regardless, it's a good time at the movies. It's that I've come to expect more as of late.
3Foxing
Nearer My God

Sorry to Bother You: 4/5
A satire in the strangest of ways, Sorry to Bother You ramps up the comedy, tension, and unpredictability before an obligatory, merely satisfactory third act that betrays the pure originality of that which came before. But by the end of it, we're still grateful have come along for the ride.
4TV on the Radio
Nine Types of Light

Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot: 4.5/5
I didn't realize that this was a biopic until the end credits, which is precisely why the film works so well. There's nothing obligatory, nothing preordained about it all. It's just a man figuring himself out and the pain surrounding, his fame is unimportant.
5Mary Chapin Carpenter
Stones In The Road

Leave No Trace: 4.5/5
A far more warm film than we're used to from director Debra Granik, Leave No Trace is still deeply felt and immaculately made, taking something deceptively simple and making it true, bolstered by a brilliant performance from young Thomasin McKenzie.
6Linkin Park
A Thousand Suns

Blindspotting: 5/5
Massively important and fantastically entertaining, Blindspotting is a daring film with as much on its heart as is on its mind. Thanks to the deep understanding of the lead actor/writer duo and the stylish direction, everything works dare I say perfectly.
7Frank Ocean
Blonde

Eighth Grade: 3/5
While the film is unarguably well made and its heart is in the right place, its humor is derived from awkwardness and lame pop culture references as if it was a period piece taking place in today. It asks the audience to sympathize with only the protagonist and none other of her generation, making it all seem like its all from the perspective of her glowing father, while at the same time falling for every coming of age cliche in the book. Perhaps this is also due to Burnham's obvious personal distance from the growing up during this time and as this character.
8La Dispute
Rooms of the House

RBG: 4/5
An informative and pleasant documentary rather than one with a burning point to prove, RBG still has a lot of important things to say about a subject very much deserving of the attention.
9Have a Nice Life
The Unnatural World

Three Identical Strangers: 4.5/5
Three Identical Strangers proves to be an engaging and incredible documentary with a lot more on its mind than one might expect at first, making some essential statements on nature vs nurture while it's at it.
10The Police
Reggatta de Blanc

Mission Impossible: Fallout: 4.5/5
While it works at a grounded, more personal level compared to its predecessors, the action and muscle are still cranked up to 11 in another fantastically entertaining entry in the M:I franchise.
11Bjork
Debut

Skate Kitchen: 3.5/5
It features poignant if simples conflicts, but the real shine comes from its pristine scenes of skating and girls just talking shit.
12Panic! at the Disco
A Fever You Can't Sweat Out

The Meg: 3/5
Unlike most summer popcorn flicks, The Meg features just enough basic character work and likable actors to make the time we spend in their small moments as baseline engaging as the explosions.
13Justin Bieber
Under the Mistletoe

Slenderman: 1/5
A worthless abomination of a film, Slender Man takes its few interesting ideas and a surprisingly decent lead actress and squanders them in the worst way possible.
14Childish Gambino
Because the Internet

Searching: 4.5/5
At the heart of the gimmick (which is brilliant in of itself for how it captures a snapshot of how we think and problem solve today) is an incredibly layered mystery and genuine characters. These combine to create an excellent and unique viewing experience.
15Fugees
The Score

BlacKkKlansman: 4.5/5
Thoughtful rather than brazenly furious, Blackkklansman acts as an impressive statement not just on racism, but on how the police fit into that, and it works both as great entertainment and as a sobering warning for today.
16Coldplay
Kaleidoscope

Crazy Rich Asians: 4/5
When it doesn't feel like a travelogue or a Disney movie, Crazy Rich Asians has some deeply felt ruminations on progressive thought versus the tradition at the heart of Chinese culture, and easily wraps the viewer up in the universal emotions of love and heartbreak while engrossing them in that same culture.
17Simple Plan
No Pads, No Helmets... Just Balls

The Predator: 3/5
While the sci-fi action is all good fun, when it comes to nearly every other aspect of the film, it's sloppy and hollow. Still, the action's what we came for isn't it?
