My 10 Favorite Albums Of 2018
Not saying they're all the best, just the ones I enjoyed the most. |
1 | | Between the Buried and Me Automata II
I loved both Automata releases and this is really meant to encompass both but I'm going to go with II for this spot because I thought it was slightly better than the first. Also, I just saw these guys live for the first time finally and I was blown away so I might be a little extra high on them at the time of making this list. |
2 | | Sleep The Sciences
Despite not being a stoner myself, I am a huge fan of all things stoner and doom metal and this release gave me exactly what I look for in a record from this genre. Matt Pike almost never disappoints. |
3 | | Rivers of Nihil Where Owls Know My Name
This album is simply amazing. I know it has gotten a ton of hype leading to some criticism of it but I can't help but praise it. I love the continued experimentation these guys are undertaking. This was a great year for Tech Death. |
4 | | Horrendous Idol
Another album that received much hype and praise on the internet and rightfully so. It took me a few listens to fully understand this album but it grew on me quickly. The bass really stands out here along with the more raw black metal-ish vocals. I need to go back through these guys catalog if I'm being honest, I was not familiar with them before this release thus proving this album has put them on the map for many metalheads including myself and my friends. |
5 | | Rise Of The Northstar The Legacy Of Shi
This is definitely the most out of place album on my list. A mixture of crossover hardcore/thrash with some nu-metal tendencies (think more early Korn and Slipknot, not Limp Bizkit) ROTNS used fellow Frenchmen Joe Duplantier of Gojira to produce this album and it paid off in full. These guys know how to make songs that get you hyped but they also will show off their skill at times, particularly on guitar with Slayer-esque solos. This album might not be for everyone but it really hit for me, just my opinion. |
6 | | Psycroptic As The Kingdom Drowns
Damn this album was fun to listen to, hence I listened to it 5 times already. Clocking in at just 35 minutes, this album left me wanting more each time. The addition of some clean vocals was fantastic. |
7 | | Harms Way (USA-IL) Posthuman
These guys are a go to workout band for me but beyond that, this is a really solid album. This release is not as technical as some of the others on here but that's not always what makes a good album. This just flat out kicks ass and goes full throttle. |
8 | | Inferi (USA) Revenant
Like I said, this was a great year for tech leaning death metal. This album creates an amazing dark atmosphere and the guitar playing is flat out dizzying. The addition of black metal elements was also fantastic. Cool guest spot from Trevor from TBDM also. |
9 | | High on Fire Electric Messiah
I already said what I think of Matt Pike. Here he shows he can play fast too and still kick ass. Cant wait to see these guys live. |
10 | | Soulfly Ritual
I never thought I'd be putting a Soulfly album in my top 10 but this release is hardddd as Jamey Jasta would say. Max is undoubtedly a riff beast and his skill is on full display here. Another credit to Max is his great selection of guest vocalist as can be seen throughout his discography. This might be the most re-listenable album on my list. Props to Max and the boys for this release, it really exceeded by expectations. |
