DarkSideOfLucca
12.13.18 | I might add descriptions/justifications later but I'm lazy right now |
TheMightyScoop
12.13.18 | Django unchained and dredd would be up there for me |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.13.18 | Oh fuck I forgot about Dredd
Django was amazing as well, but I personally like all of these a bit more
About to rewatch Phantom Thread - I didn't love it at first, but everyone in my friend group is calling me an uncultured swine and that I should try again |
DungeonBoy
12.13.18 | Seeing Mad Max Fury Road in the theater was one of the most memorable trips to the cinema in my entire life. |
Zig
12.13.18 | The Turin Horse, Amour, and The Dance of Reality are the ones for me. |
BlackwaterPork
12.13.18 | No country for old men |
TheMightyScoop
12.13.18 | no country for old men is 11 years old. A decade is 10 years long. doesn't count |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.13.18 | well its almost 2019 but technically its still 2008, hence my inclusion of there will be blood and the wrestler |
Sinternet
12.13.18 | i'm a sucker for comedy so i'd probably put what we do in the shadows in there
what i've seen of these though were great m/ |
ColonelWang
12.13.18 | The Witch and There Will Be Blood were absolutely amazing. I'd probably include The Grand Budapest Hotel as well in my favs. It was everything I could have ever wanted from Wes and more. |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.13.18 | The Grand Budapest Hotel is my #11! |
wham49
12.13.18 | I'd probably include The Grand Budapest Hotel
(2) |
Trifolium
12.13.18 | Red Turtle was beautiful and weird and the only time I cried in a movie theatre so it would defo be on mine. |
Source
12.13.18 | The Last Airbender |
twlight
12.13.18 | list has the Witch and there will be blood
list is correct |
Source
12.13.18 | There will be blood is a great movie agreed |
bgillesp
12.13.18 | Grand Budapest, Isle of Dogs, Wes Anderson etc... |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.13.18 | OH FUCK I FORGOT LOGAN |
Source
12.13.18 | Logan was too depressing for me. Like Jackman had literally played wolverine since I was 9 years old and now it's over. Feels bad man |
JoeTex
12.13.18 | The Guest |
Clumseee
12.13.18 | Not bad |
BAT
12.13.18 | wall-e and the raid |
Divaman
12.13.18 | As a fan of the original series of films, I thought 8 was very overrated. |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.13.18 | @Divaaman - I dunno, I personally thought it was one of the most beautiful looking action movies I have ever seen. It's not quite Aliens or T2 but for this generation I think it's pretty close imo |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.13.18 | @plane - downloading florida project now, still havent seen that. Under The Skin is amazing, Spring Breakers had moments of brilliance but I didn't love it as a whole, and Suspiria I need to see again |
Middle18
12.13.18 | Florida project maybe film of the year....enjoy |
blastOFFitsPARTYtime
12.13.18 | What We Do In The Shadows [2]
Taika all day |
Minushuman24
12.13.18 | All good choices for sure.
Mad Max, Scott Pilgrim, Green room, Whiplash, and mother are all on my top ten of the past ten years. |
greencorn5
12.13.18 | Whiplash would be on my list as well. I use it in my curriculum for my fine arts class. It definitely holds up to multiple viewings. Simmons was great in it. |
twlight
12.13.18 | Whiplash is classic indeed |
Coast
12.13.18 | I love the original Mad Max movies and Fury Road far exceeded my expectations. Shame was also outstanding in an unsettling way. |
Source
12.13.18 | The Road Warrior is still the GOAT imo |
Coast
12.13.18 | Agree, I prefer the raw edge of the first 2 Mad Max, it wasn't called Road Warrior in Australia. Didn't know what to make of the Fury Road previews so had low expectations. I was blown away by the action and visuals. |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.13.18 | I'm like a half hour into The Florida Project and so far I just want the main characters to die. |
TheMightyScoop
12.14.18 | also Bone Tomahawk is a terrifying western that came out a few years back. randomly saw it on Amazon prime and was pleasantly surprised |
StrikeOfTheBeast
12.14.18 | 11 makes the other X-men movies seem like total shit (which they sort of are). |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.14.18 | @Mighty - Bone Tomahawk rules, but I actually prefer Brawl in Cell Block 99. By the same writer/director. Please check that out if you haven't already.
@Strike - Agree, dude
Whiplash is fucking awesome, yah
I should have also included The Nice Guys |
Doibhin69
12.14.18 | jack and jill starring adam sander and also adam sandler. |
Divaman
12.14.18 | Just not feeling it, Lucca. I thought it was warmed over "Road Warrior". It did have better production values, but Max himself was kind of bland -- I don't even remember the actor who played him, or much of anything about the villain, for that matter. I missed the hell out of Mel Gibson. |
Source
12.14.18 | Yeah i couldn't stand hardy and all of his awkward grunting and stuff. Mel Gibson is the only max imo |
DamnVanne
12.14.18 | Arnofsky is my man too |
combustion07
12.14.18 | 10, 8, 6, 5, 4 and 3 rule. Need to see 1, always hear about it but never taken the time |
gotsthedewsdood
12.14.18 | No Birdman? |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.14.18 | @got- Birdman was real good, but prob not even in my top 20 tbh
@comb - see that shit now bro
@damn- damn right
@diva - oh well, to each his own - it was Tom Hardy, also I personally loved the villain to that movie
Btw finished The Florida Project...uhh....wasn't for me |
calmrose
12.14.18 | props for 5, phenomenal movie |
Flashmobba
12.14.18 | Great list! I'd include whiplash, birdman and no country for old men (favorite movie of all time) |
bloc
12.14.18 | Deep Blue Sea |
Divaman
12.14.18 | I'd have had both The Avengers and Avengers Infinity War in there. And Cabin in the Woods. Not sure what else. (Maybe The Shape of Water) |
InbredJed
12.14.18 | Cool list bro.
I liked Inherent Vice a lot. |
Middle18
12.14.18 | @DarkSideOfLucca its not for everyone thats for sure, you have to admit Dafoe was awesome in it tho |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.14.18 | Yeah Dafoe was fucking awesome - I was just a bit TOO annoying by the leading characters to really get involved tbh. I get that was the point, but it just kinda made me angry and impossible to sympathize but I know I'm in the minority here since everyone loves that movie ahah |
butt.
12.14.18 | Definitely needs Birdman, Green Room, and Ex Machina |
Egarran
12.14.18 | Logan, really? I believe it's just because it was extra violent and dramatic, because few things in that movie made sense. I will admit it was about 100 times better than any other Wolverine movie.
If we must have superhero movies, better ones were Deadpool and Thor: Ragnarok.
And Birdman obv. |
StrikeOfTheBeast
12.14.18 | 3 is my favorite here. Such a well put together movie. Will go down as a modern day classic I believe. |
thedoom
12.14.18 | Hostiles is a really good western, although it‘s super depressing. |
Chortles
12.14.18 | great list and great movies mentioned in the comments. 10 would make my list for sure, 4 and 5 would be pretty close too |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.14.18 | @Egarran - Yeah, really - it wasn't just because of the violence, but also because of the cinematography was a cut above the usual superhero film. The characters were much more well realized. The themes of that movie were much more mature and thought provoking, not just the violence. Deadpool was great fun, but I don't think it really compares as a film.
Damn, everyone seems to love Birdman here lmao - I dunno, I thought it was really good but I would put Green Room, Ex Machina, etc above it - those would prob be in my top 15 |
Chortles
12.14.18 | ^same, birdman is great but kind of lost the magic on rewatch, at least for me |
Egarran
12.14.18 | "The themes of that movie were much more mature and thought provoking"
Agreed, I guess I just want superhero movies to be fun and amazing rather than e.g. border politics commentary. |
Divaman
12.14.18 | Oh yeah, Ex Machina! That would have to make my list too. |
DoofDoof
12.14.18 | According to my RYM ratings my top 10are:
- Blade Runner 2049
- The Revenant
- Django
- Drive
- Lean on Pete
- Ex Machina
- Mad Max: Fury Road
- Nightcrawler
- Thor: Ragnarok
- The World’s End
Hmmmm...nothing on the ‘00s then eek
(That’s starting from 2010) |
DoofDoof
12.14.18 | Filth, Chappie, The Lobster, The Greasy Strangler and Frank would be in the mix too
A lot of the artier and/or highbrow (High-er brow anyway) stuff like Moonlight, Dunkirk, Birdman,
Llewyn Davis etc etc I enjoyed but not true favourites for multi viewing if I’m being honest |
JeetJeet
12.14.18 | Saw someone mention Dredd in here. Am I missing something with that movie? I saw it years ago and it was just ok to me. Is it worth revisiting? |
DoofDoof
12.14.18 | It wasn’t Dredd-ful but not far from it |
Kalopsia
12.14.18 | ^ yes, Dredd is fucking dope. would i say it's in my top 10 fav movies ever? top 20 even? probably not. but it's awesome |
SymbolicInTime
12.14.18 | Inside Out [: |
SlightlyEpic
12.14.18 | for me, if it's the past 10 years (which it seems to be based on yr picks), it would be something like:
synecdoche, new york
the whispering star
under the skin
carol
the handmaiden
burning
mundane history
suspiria
it's such a beautiful day
only lovers left alive |
Kalopsia
12.14.18 | Swiss Army Man ranks up there for me |
Chortles
12.14.18 | I saw Burning a month ago and it's still in my head tbh. good choices |
Divaman
12.15.18 | Not sure it would make a Top 10 list, but I remember liking Snowpiercer a lot also. |
Veldin
12.15.18 | All excellent movies! Black Swan, The Wrestler, Hereditary, and The Witch are all movies I've seen recently and fucking loved. Have you seen new Suspiria? Lots of fun |
Source
12.15.18 | "Saw someone mention Dredd in here. Am I missing something with that movie? I saw it years ago and it was just ok to me. Is it worth revisiting?"
Watch the Stallone version |
Veldin
12.15.18 | Haven't seen Let the Right One In, but I remember my friend hyping it. So I should see it? Also still haven't seen Fury Road tbh even though I own it on bluray lol |
widowslaugh123
12.15.18 | Let the right one is pretty sick but I think people blow it out a little too much. Definitely worth watching for sure. |
Veldin
12.15.18 | What We Do in the Shadows [3]
Need to watch Red Turtle and most Ghibili films. Nausicaa is fucking top tier anime imo. Oh and yeah There Will Be Blood, I forgot about that film, but that's definitely one of the best from the past decade. Yeah Django is obviously up there. What did y'all think of Hateful Eight? I've seen it twice and really enjoy it, even if it's not Tarintino's best |
Coast
12.15.18 | I’ve watched Hateful 8 more than Django, really enjoy it. |
Veldin
12.15.18 | Nice! I recently rewatched it after playing RDR2 and it was so satisfying. Can't wait to see Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
@widow- right on, I'll definitely check it out soon. I kind forgot about it, but I'm intrigued after doing some minor research.
Referring to the fact that this list has two Darron A(...) films, what did you guys think of "mother!". I watched it two nights in a row and personally loved it, but my girl thought it was dumb lol. Then proceeded to watch Black Swan and was blown away. |
JeetJeet
12.15.18 | Mother! is amazing and one of the better films of the last few years |
Egarran
12.16.18 | Only seen the Swedish original version of Let The Right One In, but I'm curious about the US version. Hard to think they can top the bleak Scandinavian 80s winter for proper soullessness. |
Meridiu5
12.16.18 | decent list, logan was a lot better than I expected. i'm just surprised interstellar and the revenant aren't here |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.16.18 | Eh, I’m not huge on Nolan outside of a couple of films. Interstellar had moments of brilliance, but also had some problems. Revenant was amazing, but doesn’t rip anything here imo |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.16.18 | @egarran - it’s still good, but let the right one in is leagues better than the us reamke due to the atmosphere alone imo but it’s not a bad remake at all |
widowslaugh123
12.16.18 | Oh shit didn’t know there was a US version of LTROI now I wanna watch both and compare. Have you guys seen Eyes of My Mother? I mean it’s not the best film ever made but it’s fucked up and disturbing as all hell |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.16.18 | Yeah Eyes of My Mother was a fun time
So was The Skin I Live In, Raw, and Goodnight Mommy |
Storm In A Teacup
12.16.18 | I've only seen Logan and half of the other movies I have never heard of. |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.16.18 | @Storm - Unsurprisingly, I STRONGGGLLLLLYYYY recommend you see everything on this list. What haven't you heard of? |
Trebor.
12.16.18 | I agree with like half this list. The other half are like strong 7/10 movies |
Storm In A Teacup
12.16.18 | 1,2,3,4,5,7,9 I have never heard of at all |
widowslaugh123
12.16.18 | You’ve never heard of There Will Be Blood? I find that hard to believe |
widowslaugh123
12.16.18 | Also no one has mentioned Wild Tales yet so I’ll just say I highly recommend it if you like revenge and humor |
Storm In A Teacup
12.16.18 | ? no i definitely have heard nothing about it |
Flowermouth92
12.18.18 | Great list, if you haven't seen BlacKkklansman yet, you should do that. Not generally a fan of Spike Lee, but his latest was brilliant. |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.18.18 | @Storm - There Will Be Blood is pretty damn popular, has had memes made out of it and was nominated for best film. I'm also kind of surprised you haven't heard of most of these as they're not really underground straight to DVD movies lol but I guess I'm envious as you have all of these great movies ahead of you! Also, let me borrow that rock you live under sometime, I could use a vacation : - P
@Flower - Thanks, man! And I agree - BlacKkKlansman was fucking awesome. Also not huge on Spike Lee outside of Malcom X and Do The Right Thing (and now Blackkklansman). |
evilford
12.18.18 | Looper, inception and interstellar are my faves but I'm not a movie snob so I'm sure everyone else disagrees |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.18.18 | I mean I really like Looper but I'm not huge on Nolan outside of a few movies (first two Batman movies, Memento and Prestige) |
evilford
12.18.18 | Oh...do you have to be a nolan fan to enjoy the movies? I didn't know that... |
evilford
12.18.18 | In that case they blow chunks agreed |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.18.18 | Well no you don't (hence me enjoying those Nolan films I just mentioned) but those movies have a lot of problems that I find in recent Nolan movies - mostly that the human characters just serve as exposition/explaining the plot to the audience instead of actual characters and they are just a bit soulless in general, even though they are technically impressive. Just not my thing (outside of those 4 I mentioned) |
Storm In A Teacup
12.18.18 | Lmao lucca awesome comment. Ill definitely make a point to check out all of these movies and get back to you! |
JoeTex
12.18.18 | master
prisoners |
Kalopsia
12.19.18 | Let Me In is a damn fine American remake. I love Let the Right One In as well fwiw.
Let Me In thankfully slimmed down the story by ignoring the boring side-friends and that cringy cat scene, so there's that. |
Ryus
12.19.18 | phantom thread |
DarkSideOfLucca
12.19.18 | I actually wasn't grabbed by Phantom Thread
@Storm - m/ |
guitarded_chuck
12.19.18 | love pta and ddl but yeah phantom thread was a bit disappointing, it was alright
there will be blood came out over 10 yo btw
dunkirk #1 for this time period |
Kalopsia
12.19.18 | Dunkirk? More like DUMBkirk amiright??
nah for real, Dunkirk was cool. |
guitarded_chuck
12.19.18 | some minor gripes with minor historical inaccuracies aside its a classic imo yee |
Meridiu5
12.19.18 | phantom thread was good but i'd never watch it again |
Kalopsia
12.19.18 | i'm sure Phantom Thread is perfectly fine, probably great... but I have zero interest in ever watching it. |
Divaman
12.20.18 | Oh yeah, I think I'd have Prometheus in there as well. |
greencorn5
01.30.19 | Dunkirk sucked. |
DarkSideOfLucca
01.30.19 | I gotta be honest, Dunkirk bored me even though it was visually impressive. I didn't really get anything at all besides "oh wow this looks cool," so it wasn't my thing.
Prometheus I wanted to love so much. I even told everyone I loved it afterwards because I fooled myself into thinking I liked it lol, but the writing to that movie is garbaggeeeeee. Seriously, fuck Lindelof for so many reasons. Major character issues, pacing issues, plot holes, etc. So that wouldn't make mine either. |
Clumseee
01.31.19 | I've seen Phantom Thread 3 times and will probably watch it again soon. Absolute masterpiece. |
Egarran
01.31.19 | Plz stop hype. A part of me wants it to be amazing, but I've had great results with low expectations. |
Ryus
01.31.19 | agreed clumsee
dunkirk sux |
oWhoadYo
01.31.19 | pretty bad list, not gonna lie |
adr
01.31.19 | the ending was annoying and dumb typical Nolan bullshit with the timelines, but the rest was actually decent |
thedoom
01.31.19 | Still think the movie would‘ve been better if everything was in chronological order. It‘s not like the timeslines added anything to the movie. |
