Album of the Year 2017/2018
I spent my last year (2017-2018 semesters) with a scholarship in Saitama, Japan. I was kinda busy with studying an enjoying my travels, and 2017 was such a strong year tbh, that I have kept going over and over again through my list - so much so that I have never managed to publish.
I have tried challenging myself with creating a list of 10-10 albums and 1-1 EPs from the last two years including a few releases from my home country. Also rec metal/shoegaze from last year that I might have missed (feels like I have missed out on 2018). |
22 | | Daughters You Won't Get What You Want
2018 |
21 | | Rolo Tomassi Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It
2018 - This should be higher on the list |
20 | | Bell Witch Mirror Reaper
2017 - Check out their visual album https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pzB-cuxBqdk |
19 | | Thy Catafalque Geometria
2018 - Favourite avant-garde (one man black metal) band, which just happens to be Hungarian. |
18 | | Slowdive Slowdive
2017 |
17 | | An Autumn For Crippled Children The Light of September
2018 - These guys never disappoint. |
16 | | Bosse-de-Nage Further Still
2018 - Blackgaze release of the year. |
15 | | Sleep The Sciences
2018 - First time listening the band, only heard Om earlier. Marijuanaut's Theme is huge. |
14 | | Amenra Mass VI
2017 - Didn't hit me that hard as many of the users here on sputnik, but still love it. Vinyl. |
13 | | Haenesy Katruzsa
2018 - Surprise Hungarian release of the year, (atmo) black metal, getting international recognition too. Their new, 2019 split with the Russian Moondweller is gives an extra layer of darkness. https://haenesy.bandcamp.com/ |
12 | | Anchorless Bodies Testet Olt
2017 - The labyrinth of disillusion. Very strong, poetry level Hungarian lyrics, decent songs, good atmosphere. Mixing their earlier melodic hardcore style with screamo and black metal, giving an interesting and rather depressing mix. FFO: Modern Life Is War, Oathbreaker, Birds in Row. |
11 | | END (NJ) From the Unforgiving Arms of God
2017 - EP - I still have the injury mark on my right upper palm from windmilling the lamp above me while listening Necessary Death first the first time on release. Usurper is my favourite. |
10 | | Tiny Moving Parts Swell
2018 - So much love for these guys. |
9 | | Northlane Mesmer
2017 - A Northlane release. Their live album, Analogue Future is fantastic too, enjoyed it a lot. |
8 | | Hundredth Rare
2017 - Didn't particularly like their earlier melodic hardcore style (poor man's Counterparts), but their shoegaze effort got me into the genre. Love how the drums have retained their earlier hardcore feel. Some of their songs could have been written better, but even the songs I didn't like first that much grew so much on me. The remix album is superb as well. Vinyl. If you guys have anything that's similar in the shoegaze genre to this please rec. |
7 | | Celeste Infidele(s)
2017 - Can't decide if I liked this better than 6 |
6 | | Lo! Vestigial
2017 |
5 | | Thornhill Butterfly
2018 - EP - Wow, these guys will be the future of metalcore, everything is perfect about this band - soaring cleans which are not gay, best type of agressive screams, the harmonizing guitars, very well built song structures. Solid. |
4 | | Deafheaven Ordinary Corrupt Human Love
2018 - Travelled to Vienna to see them live, definetely among the top 3 live concerts that I have ever attended. Huge catharsis. Bought it on vinyl at the gig. |
3 | | Counterparts You're Not You Anymore
2017 - Saw the band two times on their Japan tour, the addition of the new drummer is the best part, everything else is the same quality. Have the vinyl, visited the public toilette on the album cover in Tokyo. |
2 | | Citizen As You Please
2017 - Got it on vinyl |
1 | | Pianos Become the Teeth Wait For Love
2018 - Will get it on vinyl. I'll always treasure the memories of listening and crying while travelling on Japanese trains. |
