06.13.19 | My Bose 'sport' ones are only £50 (used to be £90+) now and have lasted 18 months and are really good sound quality.
They don't need pushing in either, which is why I can't use most other buds. Recommend them - just try not to leave them in your device when not listening, just pull out the cord, can still leave the rest of the headphone wire wrapped around. That always seems to be the weakness, the bit of wire that bends close to where you attach them to the player.
I go running in them too, so they are pretty hard wearing. Think they'll last over two years which is unheard of for me.

06.13.19 | 'I’ve never had a pair of headphones that have lasted more than a couple of years.'
Really? I've had 3 'out the house' pairs last longer. Some Sennheiser in-ear buds, Bose light-weight portable ones & my current AKGs with noise cancelling. Couldn't tell you what the model numbers were.
I'm in the market for some heavy-duty 'home use only' over ears, but my procrastination and indecisiveness is proving to be troublesome. I find it really difficult committing to buying high cost items and £200+ falls into that bracket for me. |
budgie
06.13.19 | @demon AKG701s are only 100GBP on amazon.co.uk. they're around $250 stateside. nice headphones, but the cord isn't removable, and lower end is a little cut. soundstage and detail are both really fun though. sennheiser HD600s at ~200 is another solid option. more low end than the AKGs but less energy, soundstage, detailed upper end, i'd say. and removable cable. i guess the beyer dt990 pro is the third set of cans commonly praised at the ~200 price point but i can't speak on those, i've never heard them.. there's also, it turns out, a run of sennheiser HDxx for EU customers only, on massdrop, ship date tomorrow, lol. the pressure! |

If one really needs to listen to music while they jog but don't want to wear clunky headphones, just get a fairly priced sport earbud set. They sound fine enough without having to pay north of a hundred bucks. |

I've tried many brands of earbuds over the years (mostly low-mid range price as I typically just listen to music on speakers) but I've tried Beats, various skullcandy, iFrogs, airpods, a couple JBL, JVC, etc etc and I always end up going back to skullcandy, theyve always latest me the longest and they sound good for how inexpensive they are. You can obviously get better for more money but when I can drop $15-20 on a pair of earbuds that last me a year or longer, fuck it |

MrHarrison
06.14.19 | Airpods are wanky as hell, don't do it. Also I've heard that supposedly music sounds garbage over bluetooth, can anyone confirm? |
budgie
06.14.19 | "Also I've heard that supposedly music sounds garbage over bluetooth, can anyone confirm?" in most practical cases there's probably going to be a loss of fidelity if you add wireless into your signal path. if the loss of fidelity is worth the convenience, that's up to you, if the loss of fidelity is even noticeable. i don't bother with wireless (outside of my car) because delay/glitching/interruption drives me crazy |
Asdfp277
06.14.19 | "It confuses me when I'm eyeing up a well regarded pair and some of the comments are telling me they're ideal for classical, haha."
lmao, i think they're saying they're ideal for someone who listens to classical mainly, but the thought of different headphones for different genres sounds funny |
budgie
06.14.19 | there are different types of transducers with their sound signatures, planar... dynamics, electrostatic transducers, which i've never heard before..., and then beyond that there's the soundstage, imaging, bass extension and general frequency response (some headphones have the scooped mid thing going on, others have peaks...), some headphones are praised for their resolution and detail, others for their smoothness... so sure, if you mostly listen to classical, you might be looking for a pair of cans that are masters of imaging and detail. if you want a relaxed sound for jazz or something maybe you'd be best served with planars |
PyramidNoise
06.14.19 | Has anyone ever used bone conduction headphones? They any good? |
Demon of the Fall
06.14.19 | @asdf: I understand what they're saying in that you can listen to any genre regardless, but if the headphones are optimised for a genre that I never listen to, it would kind of suck. 06.14.19 | "the thought of different headphones for different genres sounds funny"
Yeah I thought so too, until I tried a few different mid/high range headphones. Some brought out extra clarity which was nice for soundtracks, yet made some rock songs kind of flat/boring. And some just bring out high frequencies more than others; some suppress bass, etc. So with that, I guess it makes sense that some are better for certain genres than others. A lot of it comes down to subjectivity though |
supremejelly
06.14.19 | if anyone gives a shit, I made a list a few months ago comparing different headphones https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=185501#comments The responses were helpful when I was shopping for a pair. |

Demon of the Fall
06.14.19 | yeah that's what I'm attempting to get my heard around, my tastes are quite versatile but I'd say perhaps 60%-ish of my headphone-based listening is metal related, so why would I want a pair that was optimised for something entirely on the opposite end of the spectrum? |
supremejelly
06.14.19 | Yeah, headphones are a nightmare to shop for since everyone's tastes are different. The pair I have now (dt770) were said to be bad for metal/rock, but I think they're great for that |
