09.29.19 | October is now open for recs. |
garas
09.29.19 | Aaaaah, it's here!!! I still have to think about it.
I'm sure it's going ro be a great month! |
DoofDoof
09.29.19 | last round sort of petered out
and 'spooky' is an awful theme, aaargh
I rarely find anything 'spooky' - what are we looking for, 'Scooby Doo Theme' |
DoofDoof
09.29.19 | Ok, only thing I find a bit creepy I can think of right now:
Biosphere 'Aura In the Kitchen with the Candlesticks'
- this does sort of sound medieval haunted/'from another time' and it quite a disturbing way for me
if people put up any metal or prog as 'spooky' I'm not feeling it, just advance warning |
Divaman
09.29.19 | I'm thinking anything supernatural or horror themed.
Think the stragglers are still catching up with the last round, which is fine. |

09.29.19 | Got a link for me, Doof? |

Second pick and even better, just remembered (but people will hate the length but they'll be rec'ing Marilyn Manson so they can hush) is Lustmord:
Lustmord - Heresy Pt 3
It's on Spotify, no link to Youtube, but this one is ESSENTIAL. |
DoofDoof
09.29.19 | Diva I'm going for genuinely scary |
Divaman
09.29.19 | Mmmm. Going a bit early with the second pick, but we'll more likely than not get two a piece in, so I'll post it. |
DoofDoof
09.29.19 | Here's a bandcamp link to my second pick:
https://lustmord.bandcamp.com/track/heresy-part-3
If I only get one pick I'd say put up the Lustmord, more people should listen to him |
DoofDoof
09.29.19 | Thanks Diva, good work sorting this all out, it is fun just wish more people voted beyond the first five picks last round... |
ArsMoriendi
09.29.19 | "Murder in the Red Barn" by Tom Waits (from Bone Machine)
According to https://genius.com/Tom-waits-murder-in-the-red-barn-lyrics this song is about a real murder: "This song tells the story of a real-life murder in Suffolk, England in the 1827. William Corder told his lover Maria Marten to meet him at the Red Barn at dawn so they could run away together, but instead he shot and killed her and went on the run. He was later arrested and hanged for her murder in 1828. Maria’s sister claims that she had a dream in which Maria’s ghost came to her and showed her where her body was buried. The Barn became a popular tourist site and people wanting to take memorabilia stripped it bare."

09.29.19 | Just a warning: Unless I get otherwise inspired, if I get to a second pick, I'm probably going to choose between two equally cheesy ones. |

09.29.19 | I'm gonna hold off on my 2nd one so it's more of a mix |
Divaman
09.29.19 | Me too. |

09.29.19 | Is it faux pas to pick something from a 'popular' album? |
tectactoe
09.29.19 | because there's one album specifically that's creepy as fuck but lots of people have probably heard it already |
ArsMoriendi
09.29.19 | Pick whatever you want |
tectactoe
09.29.19 | Alrighty. Well I guess I'm joining this round then. And my first pick is maybe an obvious one, but this is easily one of the most moody, unsettling songs I can think of (that I still enjoy). Immediately sprung to mind when I saw the theme. Really, almost any song from this album would work.
Slint - 'Good Morning, Captain'
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocZK5DHzkh4
Also on Spotify. |
Divaman
09.29.19 | I agree. Some people might score it low, but that can happen no matter what you pick anyway. Welcome aboard. |
DoofDoof
09.29.19 | 'Good Morning, Captain' is in my top 10 songs of all time so I guess tectactoe wins the round, let's all go home |
DoofDoof
09.29.19 | it is quite spooky too, hats off |

09.29.19 | Do it then |
DoofDoof
09.29.19 | well played Diva for finding the youtube link for the Lustmord 'tune' - such an incredible track, no one play it on headphones out and about or any nonsense like that - ideally dark room and play the whole thing. Incredible album, Lustmord's best I'd say |
tectactoe
09.29.19 | *thumbs up* Should I pick a second song, or wait? |
Asdfp277
09.29.19 | lmao i chose this theme but can't come up with a rec still lol |
Divaman
09.29.19 | I'd prefer you wait a little. I let Doof put his up because he had already named two songs, and it's 99% we'll all wind up getting at least two picks. But I usually like to give everybody a chance to get their first picks in before I throw it up and ask for second picks. |
zakalwe
09.29.19 | I don’t think I’ve ever been unnerved by a song other than the theme tune to picture box.
A song that definitely has an ‘eerie’ unsettling feel to it though is Cropsey by Have a Nice Life from the album The Unnatural World.
Little Johnnys interview at the beginning there is unhinged. Nice melodramatic keyboards that make up the body of the song as well. |
Asdfp277
09.29.19 | I have my rec i think!
BOHREN & DER CLUB OF GORE - "Painless Steel" [from the album 'Sunset Mission']
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VA4jpq8Q128
Ambient, jazz. I guess it's a bad pick since it's such a popular album. Chose one of the shorter songs. |
tectactoe
09.29.19 | Sounds good. I was half-tempted to name the Lavender Town theme music from Pokémon Red. Shit is unnerving, especially the original Game Boy (midi) version. |

09.29.19 | So this is my first SOTD thread - do we just give the songs a listen, rate, and post our summed up thoughts here? |
Divaman
09.29.19 | Yes, basically. A lot of people wait, and do it in chunks of 5 or 6 songs at a time. I usually post my ratings and thoughts more or less daily. It's whatever you're comfortable with. |

09.29.19 | Time to get back into this! Most of the songs I consider spooky don't work all that well as standalone listens, and it feels kinda lazy to phone in Dead Can Dance, Portishead, Chelsea Wolfe etc
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Babydoctor (from Of Natural History)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d7FeVPoMlC0
This band/song is weird and ridiculous and sometimes makes me chuckle but mostly terrifies me |
SlothcoreSam
09.30.19 | OK the song that freaks me the fuck out the most is a long one, so if you don't get through it all, i forgive you. Just skip ahead a bit. But if you do listen to it, put on some good headphones, and lay down in a dark room and relax whilst listening to...

Spooky... hhhm... well Type O could be set for the whole month, but that seems pretty obvious. I'll go with a recent release:
Tribulation - The Lament.

09.30.19 | Do listen to it all Arsmo, I think there are certain parts you will really enjoy, and others where you will wanna rip your headphones off and throw them at the wall. Every Patton/ Bungle fan needs to hear this at least once. Some of his screaming is terrifying, and the concept of laying in a hospital bed awaiting surgery without anesthesia add to the freakish nature of this track. The artwork on the album is awesome as well. |
Let
09.30.19 | Demdike Stare - Forest of Evil (dusk)
A sprawling dub techno track that sounds like precariously walking through a thick fog. Simultaneously cozy and eeries (think Silent Hill) |

Metalrain
09.30.19 | Dir En Grey - The Blossoming of Beelzebub(From Dum Spiro Spero)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-J6YI5ysDU8

garas
09.30.19 | So, here is my pick:
Stirge - "The Golden Rat" (https://stirge.bandcamp.com/track/stirge-the-golden-rat)
I brought ya some seriously SPOOKY dungeon synth from this year. |
Scheumke
09.30.19 | Owh wow, I noticed I totally lost track of September. Let's try to make October one where I actually contribute to this list! Love the theme, I'll think about something good. |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.30.19 | "also thought of The Gathering's 'Souvenirs' album but i don't think any song is particularly spooky"
Lol I was on the verge of going for These Good People, but the spook is kinda cumulative on that one |
Scheumke
09.30.19 | Yeah got one I think will qualify nicely. Rammstein - Wiener Blut. Song's about Josef Fritzl, an Austrian who kept his daughter captive in his basement for 24 years and birthed 7 children of her. Something real to add to the creepieness of the song. The fact that it is being sung from the point of view of Fritzl makes it even more unnerving. Def check out the translation for full effect. |
Trifolium
09.30.19 | Yeah that is a totally gruesome case Scheumke.
These Good People = < 3 |

09.30.19 | Ok gonna commit here: "Dahmer Does Hollywood" by Amigo the Devil
A really dark brand of folk (deamed murder folk by many people), Amigo the Devil has quite a few songs about serial killers. "Dahmer Does Hollywood" is one of the most straightforward and literal, and also one of the most unsettling.

10.01.19 | Lycia - "Estrella" : Almost as ethereal as it is spooky. Nice tone, found myself more relaxed than anxious, honestly, though I'm not content to grade strictly against the rubric of 'is this spooky or not' since that is more subjective than even liking or disliking something. Doesn't quite justify its length with enough variation or atmosphere, but it's not bad. [2.9] |

10.02.19 | Biosphere - "Aura in the Kitchen With the Candlesticks" : Minimalist and ambient, gets the tone right but could've used just a *tad* more variation over the course of six minutes. The two instances where it... "changes," had me prepped for a climax that never really happened. I respect that, but I also have blue balls. Enjoyed the atmosphere, though - listened to it on the drive into work in the dark. [3.5] |
DoofDoof
10.02.19 | Lycia - Estrella / didn't do anything too major for me, a whole album in a similar style I'd nod off, but perfectly fine (3/5) |
Trifolium
10.02.19 | Estrella: Ultra 90s, love the production, quite some cheese. All in all it kind of works and I don't know why. It's a little long/monotonous but the vibe is cool. 2.9
Aura In The Kitchen With The Candlesticks: I checked some of this guys older stuff years ago, couldn't really get into it. This doesn't really change that for me. Although it's nice and wave-like the mood is a little too similar and a little uninteresting throughout. 2.9 |
DoofDoof
10.02.19 | I actually think Candlesticks works better in the middle of an even more uneventful full album - it's this spooky moment of clarity when something comes out of the mist, finally there is this medieval-ish guitar and what feel to be these disembodied voices floating from somewhere.
The album is spending the entire day looking up at the window of the old haunted castle through the fog and drizzle...and that song is when the ghosts finally appear at witching hour, sitting in the window brushing their ghost hair or whatever ghosts do. |
DoofDoof
10.02.19 | I'm 90% sure Diva will label it hip hop anyway |
Trifolium
10.02.19 | That is an amazing description man! Now I almost want to check that album, although the "even more uneventful album" part is slightly off putting. Maybe if I'm in another mood. |
DoofDoof
10.02.19 | you have to be in the mood to just lie down and half listen to it, the rest of the album is largely just ambient waves that sound a little like howling wind (around the ramparts?) - honestly sometimes I've drifted in and out of sleep to it, woken up when 'Candlesticks' is playing and get creeped out a little. It's one of the best albums to send me to sleep, in a good way. |
Divaman
10.02.19 | I'm gonna take down the Ruben Slikk rec when I get to my other computer, because apparently it came from a banned user whose comments have already been erased by the mods, and it doesn't look like it has anything to do with the month's theme. (And apparently I'm getting enough hip-hop as it is from Doof.) |
Trifolium
10.02.19 | Ugh yeah, we (and you!) know the guy, one of the more illustrious and relentless recurring users. |
garas
10.02.19 | "Aura in the Kitchen With the Candlesticks" - Spooky? -> Definitely yes.
And fuck me, but my opinion is basically the same as Dewi's: "...haunting ambient music huh, nice, nice. With just a couple of chords coming out of a pulsing keypad and some depressed alien singing while drowning in vocal effects, this made up for a very relaxing and soothing listen. Honestly, loved it. A round 4" So yeah, a 4.0 |

Divaman
10.02.19 | >I'm 90% sure Diva will label it hip hop anyway
You're out of your mind. This is clearly disco.
Biosphere - 3.3 - Sets a nice mood. I'm not sure it's spooky, although it is a little discomforting. Doesn't really go anywhere, but that's OK, because I liked where we were. |
DoofDoof
10.02.19 | 'I'm not sure it's spooky' - spookier than your rec tho ;P |
ArsMoriendi
10.02.19 | I'm gonna try my best to keep up with this |

10.02.19 | I'm thinking that in the spirit of the month, we should just give Ars and Sam a couple of chainsaws, lock them in one of those big metal shipping crates, and let them work out October 31st for themselves. What say ye? |
ArsMoriendi
10.02.19 | "Aura in the Kitchen With the Candlesticks"
So far this is very pleasant and atmospheric. This doesn't fit the theme at all since it's more meditative than anything, even with the weird angelic calls. I guess some people might find angelic voices to be creepy? I don't. This wouldn't even frighten a small child. Good thing I don't actually care whether its spooky or not. It's nice enough.

10.03.19 | Lustmord: I honestly thought this was gonna be either black metal or funeral doom, looking at that cover, but nope, these are 16 minutes of dark ambient, honestly not very spooky, although it could be very well be a rip off a background track of Silent Hill, but Yamaoka did it way better. 2.5 (Sorry Doofy!) |

10.03.19 | Biosphere: There was definitely something spooky in the at first seemingly calm atmosphere. I enjoyed it for what it was, but its not something I will put on regularly or anything. 3.2/5 Fun to see that the guy is a Norwegian with an album called 'The Hilvarenbeek Recordings'. Hilvarenbeek is a small dutch village literally 10km away from me lol. |

10.03.19 | "Heresy, Part III" - Spooky? -> Yes.
I'm really happy to hear some drone/dark ambient here. I wasn't sure about the spookiness here, but later the vocals (or the ghostly noises) saved it from the 1.0. Not bad, not bad. 3.4 |

tectactoe
10.03.19 | Lustmord - "Heresay III" : I understand the largest aspect/appeal of much drone/ambient is aligned precisely with my biggest complaint in that there needs to be just a *tad* more variation to sustain e.g. a 16-minute track. (I mean why not just make it a 48-minute track at that point?) Some additional noises and synth (?) additions to the final five-or-so minutes are welcomed, wish there were a bit more of that scattered throughout. Good atmosphere, but again, I felt the same at minute four as I did at minute seven, and at minute eight, and minute ten, etc. [3.0] |
Egarran
10.03.19 | Estrella - Nicely unspooky 2.5/5
Aura In The Kitchen With The Candlesticks - ...no, didn't do anything. 2/5
Heresy Part 3 - Interestingly, this sounds exactly the same (if not better) at double speed. It is a bit spooky, but damn. 2.6/5
Murder in the red barn - Oh Tom you old weirdo. I'm not drunk enough for this. 1.8/5 |
DungeonBoy
10.03.19 | #teamsilence, you guys would love that album ;)
Also, lol at Mirror Reaper
- Estrella - 2.5/5 Spooky, 3.5/5 song
- Aura in the Kitchen With the Candlesticks - 3/5 bizarre Clue reference, 2.5/5 Spooky, 3/5 song
- Heresy Part 3 - 4/5 long AF for a casual listen, I got 6 minutes in does that count as an effort? 2.5/5 for personal effort. 2boring2Bspooky 2.5/5 spooks. 2/5 track, unless you really dig random sounds, then 5/5.

Trifolium
10.03.19 | ''I'm pretty sure a never-ending drone isn't ever going to get a high score around here.''
Depends on the drone! The fact that it's a drone or that it's never ending doesn't have to do anything about it. |

10.03.19 | Lustmord - 3.0 - I liked it OK, but it's another track that doesn't really move much. It's like sitting on the veranda, drinking your morning coffee and looking out on hell before everyone's really awake. I want to see hell at high noon, when the day has really gotten started. |
ArsMoriendi
10.04.19 | "Heresy Part 3"
Who let Doof get into ambient? Well, at least this one is actually creepy. I was kinda hoping that SPOOKtober was gonna be fun in a Monster Mash kinda way, but I guess this is fine too. I wonder if listening too closely to music with this little going on can cause brain damage. If so, I'd say lay off the ambient Doof. It'd work well as soundtrack music in a horror movie or horror video game though, so props for that. Now it sounds like a gigantic toad is farting, or at least that's what I'm visualizing. THAT'S IT! This song is about the invasion of giant alien toads! I'm trying to make this more entertaining than it actually is.
3/5

10.04.19 | Lustmord, 3.0. I think with a lot of these tracks, you agree going to have to be in the dodgy setting to get that spooky vibe. I dig this one. |

10.04.19 | Tom Waits - "Murder in the Red Barn" : Bone Machine has better offerings than this, but I suppose this might be the most befitting of the theme. Not exactly 'spooky' but there's an overarching eeriness, esp. when coupled with the context. [3.2] |

There's like a million different ways I want to respond to this because it's super inaccurate, but I'm gonna settle for "stop harping on the same dead joke" |
DoofDoof
10.04.19 | 'it's super inaccurate'
I'd wager more accurate than your idea of what I listen to - ignorance will continue to beget ignorance while I'm on duty. Gotta keep that ars in line.
Tom Waits - Murder in the Red Barn, some cool lyrics, very lo-fi production even by TW standards on this one. Solid album track but I can name 50 Waits songs I prefer at the most modest estimate. Theme wise it's alright, very ghost tour story. 3.5/5
Slint - Good Morning, Captain - I'll rate this now as I know it very very well. A sort of ghost story? It's quite mysterious and entirely brilliant - sometimes I refer to it as being my second favourite song of all time. An easy 5 out of 5. |

10.04.19 | I'm not gonna go that because I really doubt you listen to black metal, dance pop or ambient techno. I don't really listen to those either though so |
DoofDoof
10.04.19 | I listen to a lot of black metal, a little ambient techno (more actual techno though) and I'm not sure of the actual distinction of dance pop but I guess I listen to some of it but probably don't enjoy it too often.
Genres I really don't listen to:
- Classical
- Opera
A few genres I don't generally like:
- Metalcore
- most modern prog in its various forms/a lot of modern jazz fusion stuff (think Thank You Scientist)
- Chart pop AND the most chart friendly of indie stuff
- Country pop
- Pop punk/some poppy emo punk
- Glossy metal/prog metal/viking metal/that sort of thing - stuff with awful vocals and over produced genrally
- Trap and mumble rap (though some exceptions) |

10.05.19 | OK gang, some housekeeping things for October:
1. I gave the 31st to Ars' pick, just based on that he was the first one to ask. (Apologies, Sam). And maybe a little because he seems to have won the chainsaw battle. Sam, I posted your original pick of the AFI cover of "Halloween" on the 30th. Let me know if you wanted it changed to the original Misfits version.
2. It's been such a successful month -- I think all of our regulars have made recs this month, and we have a few new contributors also -- that unfortunately, most of us won't get second picks. tectatoe and garas, you both asked me about second picks already (and I put you off), so I've reserved a day for each of you. I'm going to forego a second pick myself. But that only leaves us one more day. (Again, apologies to everyone about this -- I probably would have handled the matter of second picks more thoughtfully if I'd have realized that at least half of us wouldn't get one.)
So tec and garas, please submit those second recs. And first-come-first-served, who wants that last pick on October 29? |

10.06.19 | Have a Nice Life - 3.6 - creepy and good. |

And yup AFI's version of Halloween is great. |

10.06.19 | Have a Nice Life - “Cropsey” : Good shit. Not really all that spooky, though the opening interview is unsettling enough. But HANL always nail a great, overwhelming atmosphere unlike any other. [4.1] |

10.06.19 | So budgie and garas, let's have those last picks. |
garas
10.06.19 | "Good Morning, Captain" - Spooky? -> No... 1.0
But I have another score for this, because this was a very-very good track, I really dig the overall sound of this stuff. I'll give a 3.8 too.
"Cropsey" - Spooky? -> No. 1.0
And additionally, this was pretty bad. |
ArsMoriendi
10.06.19 | I'm doubting garas's ability to judge if something is Spooky
Good Morning, Captain is deff spooky |
budgie
10.06.19 | i didnt think it was spooky, just sounded like fun post-rock or post-punk |
garas
10.06.19 | My second rec is:
Korhadt - "there is no room for ven gecik" (https://ngcprod.bandcamp.com/track/there-is-no-room-for-ven-gecik)
Many of you will hate this a lot, but I don't care. This is a really fucked up, creepy, nightmare material experimental (funeral) doom track. It sounds even scarier on cassette! |
Divaman
10.06.19 | So garas, is 1.0 your score for "Cropsey"? |
garas
10.06.19 | "i didnt think it was spooky, just sounded like fun post-rock or post-punk"
Oh yessss, budgie! At least you understand me. |
Egarran
10.06.19 | Garas told us he would be hardcore. |
garas
10.06.19 | Hmmm, I want to stick to my word too, so add my average instead: 2.4 (so I did give a 1.0, but somehow still not). |
ArsMoriendi
10.06.19 | "Good Morning, Captain"
I already know this song. Great bass line, good floaty guitar, drums are fine, though I guess not a huge standout. The lead vocalist of Slint sounds like such a stereotypical poindexter, high pitched and nasal. Which is fine, in fact, the vocals are fairly unique. The atmosphere is creepy, although the lyrics are not -they're more sad. Taken at face value, it's about a captain who lost his ship and everything on it. The captain is barely alive looking for help only to find his son he that hasn't seen since his journey to sea. His son rejects him. It's easy to assume there's a deeper layer though and according to an interview with the band, Brian McMahan wrote this about the guilt he felt leaving his family and especially his little brother to go tour. In a sense, Brian is the captain, the sea is the tour, and the boy is his little brother. Good lyrics, good music.
4.8/5 |
garas
10.06.19 | Arrrrrh, I hate exceptions, but it was such a great song... |
ArsMoriendi
10.06.19 | "Cropsey"
This intro is already super creepy. Mistreatment of a child at a mental facility? Weirdly engaging? Sad though. When the main musical part comes in it sounds like some mixture of post-punk and shoegaze. I kind of don't like how the vocals sound like they're in a distant wind tunnel, and the rest of the music is mixed in a way where it feels mushed together. It's not bad though as far as atmosphere and aesthetic goes. In fact, +.3 for the intro because that really caught my ear.
3.3/5 |
SlothcoreSam
10.06.19 | Murder in the red barn. 3.3 this is gourmet busker music.
Good morning, Captain. 3.9 Does anyone else get Post Malone vibes from this? Cus I don't. That comment is as irrelevant and out of place as the pop-up ads that come up on this site at times. Anyways, the song itself is great.

Divaman
10.07.19 | Bohren & Der Club of Gore - 3.1 - Not bad, but I liked the beginning better than the end. The track lost me as it wore on. |
garas
10.07.19 | "Painless Steel" - Spooky? -> No. 1.0
It was a very-very nice droney jazz track (it would be a 3.9 or so). Calm and ethereal; it was relaxing and not spooky at all. |
Scheumke
10.07.19 | Kinda disappointed now I realize that there's no Type O Negative in this list. |
Scheumke
10.07.19 | Lustmord – Heresy, part III: This could’ve been a Halloween ambient song. I liked it but thought it was a bit overlong for this list specifically. This music doesn’t really work in short bursts though, so I get what it’s trying to do. 3.3
Tom Waits – Murder in the Red Barn: I love me some Tom Waits and this was fun. 3.6
Slint – Good Morning, Captain: This was great, brings both the creeps and the feels. 4.1
|
tectactoe
10.07.19 | Bohren & Der Club of Gore - "Painless Steel" : Not at all creepy (imo) but ambient, relaxed, and jazzy. Not much to say. Nothing phenomenal here, but I dig it and the vibes it sends to my brain. [3.4] |
DungeonBoy
10.07.19 | Slint - "Good Morning, Captain" - Maybe my receptors are broken but I felt nothing, and that's a hard 0/5 on the spookfactor. rating=2.5/5
Have a Nice Life - "Cropsey" - pretty cool, never heard these guys, but I appreciate their message.. Have a nice life? I think I will! thanks! - 3.5/5
Bohren - "Painless Steel" - What is this magic I am experiencing for the first time? Bohren and his club of gore? 4.5/5.

10.07.19 | "Painless Steel"
Chill ambient jazz is creepy? Guys, I hate to break it to you, but just being ambient isn't automatically spooky. "I guess it's a bad pick since it's such a popular album. Chose one of the shorter songs" Someone chose a Slint song, you're fine. This is more boring than Doof's ambient picks, so I'm gonna have to give it a lower score than his.
2.7/5 |
garas
10.07.19 | "Guys, I hate to break it to you, but just being ambient isn't automatically spooky." Finally, I can agree with Ars on a music related topic! But there are very spooky ambient tracks/albums/artists tho. (You'll see at my first rec!) |

10.07.19 | Trist - Angst

10.08.19 | Monolake - 2.8 - It's creepy, but very scattered as a song. |
Scheumke
10.08.19 | Have a nice life – Cropsey: Wow this hit home. The voice-overs are unhinging indeed and the song has that same smothering atmosphere. I love it. 4.6
Bohren & Der Blub of Gore – Painless Steel: More soothing than creepy for me, but I quite enjoyed that. 3.7
Monolake – Phenomenon: The fact that it’s mixed so directly gives it a ‘little too close for comfort’ vibe and the music is spooky so in that regard it passes with flying colours. There’s not that much that really grabbed me though. 3.2
|
Trifolium
10.08.19 | The Monolake one is more of a sound collage agreed, but I thought it was so spooky, too spooky to be ignored. |
Archelirion
10.08.19 | Oh shit I should probably catch up/start on this month heh |
Archelirion
10.08.19 | 1) Lycia - Estrella: A mysterious listen but I think moreso a pleasant one. Still, I don't really think the track went anywhere much across the runtime, so it might fit better as part of the wider album than by itself. 3.5/5.0
2) Biosphere - Aura in the Kitchen...: Pretty similar to Estrella although with marginally more development. Mainly pleasant though, still. 3.6/5.0
3) Lustmord - Heresy, Part III: NOW we're talking. Fantastically creepy dark ambient that would make any walk through a semi-industrialised zone very unsettling indeed. Long but absolutely warranted the run time. The fact that it's nearly 30 years old blew my mind. 4.3/5.0
4) Tom Waits - Murder in the Red Barn: Considering I've been singing the chorus since I heard it (admittedly not too long ago but still) it's surprisingly catchy, and the skeletal backing under Waits' croon is always gonna be a bit creepy. Good stuff. 3.9/5.0
5) Slint - Good Morning, Captain: One of those that, despite being so influential, has still not really been matched by many. Each melody these guys pull somehow manages to be JUST off-centre enough that it's permanently eerie. Not my fave from the album but still class. 4.1/5.0
6) Have a Nice Life - Cropsey: I was a bit kneejerk with the straight dead 5 but it's like a 4.8 so I'm gonna just leave it. That explosion of sound after the long, horrifying sample (frpm an excellent but disturbing documentary which is worth watching) is just outstanding.
7) Bohren und der Club von Gore: nice, chill and pretty noir. I reckon an album would work better than a single track though. 3.4/5.0
8) Monolake - Ghosts: like listening to one of Trentemøller's spookier, more pared-back offerings, which is a compliment in my eyes. 3.8/5.0 |
Trifolium
10.08.19 | Glad you like Phenomenon! I get the Trentemøller comparison, that dude definitely took inspiration from Monolake! |
garas
10.08.19 | "Phenomenon" - Spooky? -> Yes.
I love the samples, the droney synths, the glitch effects. Spooky atmosphere: very well done! I shall check the full album as well. 4.2 |
Trifolium
10.08.19 | Yes garas! I already hoped you would dig this. |
tectactoe
10.08.19 | Monolake - "Phenomenon" : Minimalism used properly. Enjoyed this more than the two other ambient/atmo tracks thus far, and found it befitting of the theme. Still would've liked a bigger "build," but I can't complain too much. [4.0] |
DungeonBoy
10.08.19 | Phenomenon - Probably the spookiest ambient track we've gotten thus far. Someone needs to learn how to hold onto their marbles though. 3.5/5 for spooks but not sure how you would casually listen to something like this. |
Trifolium
10.08.19 | Mainly production aesthetics. He completely, 100% nails that time and time again. Dude's a legend. |
ArsMoriendi
10.08.19 | "Phenomenon"
The beat sounds like water drops. This certainly has an eerie feel to it so far, so it fits the theme. I like the weird electronic plinks and clangs in the song. Whoa, now it got glitchy. Best ambient track of the month so far. Not much else to say about it, but +.1 for being super engaging from start to finish.

10.09.19 | Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - 2.9 - Yet another song where I liked where it started out better than where it wound up. |
SlothcoreSam
10.09.19 | Cropsey. 3.1 it's like industrial post punk, reminds me of NIN.
Painless steal. 3.0 This is seedy 2am music, a lil spooky, should be a soundtrack to a 70s thriller where the girl is walking home by herself, in a city that is sleeping.
Phenomenon. 3.5 Starts off beautifully haunting, then shit gets scary, with random noises, I'm glad i didn't hear this when i was a kid. Spookiest so far.
Babydoctor. 3.9, this is all over the place, def creepy at times, i need to hear more of this band, getting angry Bungle crossed with Tom Waits vibes, which is strange add we have already had both those artists this month. |
Trifolium
10.09.19 | Yessss Ars!!! Glad you liked it. He's a great dude. |
Egarran
10.09.19 | Good Morning Captain - My expectations have never been higher. So this was bound to feel underwhelming. 3.8/5
Cropsey - Well, well, well, what a massive load of shite this is. Is what I've always wanted to say about a zak rec. Turns out it's not too far from the truth, but it definitely gets good in the second half. 3/5
Painless Steel - I should like this band and I've tried, but it doesn't happen. 2.5/5
Phenomenon - Ahh this actually gets spooky. But I would also never casually play it. 3.5/5
Babydoctor - "Will the future involve wood?" I can answer that with a resounding yes.
2 minutes into this, I just want to move on but there's still 12 minutes left, argh. Plus for being original. Gets almost Mr. Bungle at the end, nice. 3/5 |
Trifolium
10.09.19 | So spooky agreed. |
DungeonBoy
10.09.19 | Babydoctor... 14 minutes!? okay let's do this. Band is soooo random guyz. The music is pretty interesting, vocals would be better in a different language where I didn't have to understand the lyrics. Is the baby a doctor, or is it a doctor for babies? lol at 8 minutes in, can't believe I made it this far, but I guess worth it. It's like if an attention defecit Korn was on pcp.. what do you even rate this.. 3/5 i guess? |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.09.19 | Catchup time!
1. Estrella - Sounds like heyday Anathema gone dream pop. This is defo my vibe and I was very on board to begin with, but the song feels a bit protracted/short of development. That melody and ambience is nice, but it starts to run rings around itself. Should probs check more from this project 3.3/5
2. Aura In The Kitchen With The Candlesticks - Not sold on this. Ambient synths with common or garden acoustic minor chord progressions over the top don't tend do it for me anymore. 2.9/5
3. Heresy Part 3 - Sixteen fucking minutes?! I guess that's karma from when I rec'd Car Seat Headrest's longest song in my first SOTD... from my recent listening, I think I'm slightly more open to ambient than usual. I usually keep a respectful distance from sounds like this, and while this one reminded me why, I enjoyed its tone and gradual shifts well enough. Still not over that runtime, but the industrial(?) pulsing and flaring towards the end at least felt like a decent payoff. Felt like I was living in the world of Eraserhead, which I guess counts as spooky 3.4/5
4. Murder in the Red Burn - Hell yes, nice one Ars. Good pick from a great album. Never been that spooked by this (storyteller Waits is more enjoyable for his performativity and folk-style craft imo) but otherwise all good 3.7/5
5. Good Morning Captain - Funny to see this on one of these lists; can't imagine experiencing it for the first time part of a prescribed list. Feels like one of those songs that everyone comes across in their own space and time and grows into. That said, one of the greatest tracks of all time and definitely spooky 6/5
@Sam the rest of Sleepytime's discog (especially that album) is really worth a jam and very creepy. I put Babydoctor in mainly because the 'deprived the use of your hand' section terrifies me, but they have quite a few grade-a songs |
garas
10.09.19 | "Babydoctor" - Spooky? -> No. 1.0
My face during listening: ಠ_ಠ
It was very original though, and the vocals were pretty interesting, which is always a plus. It was somehow shocking, but not spooky. (Oh, and holy fuck...one of the worst band names I ever heard.) |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.09.19 | 6. Cropsey - Never checked this album out in full and this track makes me think this might have to change. Incredibly haunting sample use at the start and classic Have a Nice Life vibes from that point in. Adding this to my 2010s checklist 4/5
7. Painless Steel - This is one of the most neo noir things I've heard in a good while. Dope cinematic vibes, gonna have to check this album 4.2/5
8. Monolake - Those percussion sounds have got some twisted asmr shit going on. Easily the creepiest track so far, reminds me of when I was 80% asleep and then Aphex Twin's Gwarek 2 came up on shuffle (that memory haunts me dreams). This is less extreme than Gwarek 2 but in a similar way, I can't imagine coming back to it although I'm very on board with the craft. Extra points for spooky factor = 4/5 |
Trifolium
10.09.19 | Yeah Johnny! It's super spooky agreed. Plus that production is to die for. He's one of the three creators of the Ableton software. |

dmathias52
10.09.19 | Cropsey - Another one who's never checked this album, or even band, but that's gotta change. Loved the vocals and the keyboard throughout. 4.2/5
Painless Steel - This basically passed by as background music. Never really engaged me, but was pretty when I forced myself to listen. 2.8/5
Phenomenon - Adding to my "listen to" as well, probably sooner rather than later. Loved the atmosphere, could picture myself in it, but still a really interesting structure to the song 4.3/5 |

10.10.19 | Ok here we go:
Slint - I always thought this band/album was overrated and here we are. It bored the absolute living hell out of me. 2.5
Have a Nice Life - Really, really good. Didn't know about these guys. Sweet eerie melodies, loved the distorted feel of the whole thing. Will check the album for sure. 4.5
Bohren & Der Club Of Gore - Cool, cozy cup of ambient jazz with a dominating sax solo that doesn't really go anywhere but I dug the noir feel of it. 3.5
Monolake - The spookest track so far (the only one actually!), but I don't know, didn't really dig it much. 3.0
Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - Interesting, kinda like a more restrained version of Swans, the violin is a nice touch. When they go wild mid track they really go over the top. Good stuff. 4.0 |
Scheumke
10.10.19 | Sleepytime Gorilla Museum: Wow yeah this was unhinged. Pretty creepy stuff I'd say. Can't say I really enjoyed it all that much but that's just because this genre doesn't really gell with me. 3.0
Fantomas - Nope sorry. Its creepy yes. It's also just random noises to me. 2.0 |

10.10.19 | Fantomas - 2.8 - I listened to the whole song/album. It was a mixed bag - there were parts that I liked and parts not so much. |

10.10.19 | Well done Diva, getting through the whole song. Yeah i agree that there are some great parts, creepy bits, and a lot of filler. |
Divaman
10.10.19 | OK tectactoe and Scheumke, thanks, got 'em. Any others I missed? Sometimes I update and the damned site crashes, and I forget to go back and add them again later. It's like trying to captain the Titanic. |

10.10.19 | 10/9. Sleepytime Gorilla Museum - "Babydoctor" : Wasn't creepy up front, but definitely gets more unsettling as it goes on. Not huge on the vocals here, even from an "eerie" aspect, and the music sounds fine albeit not super interesting. Not bad, though, but not something I'd actively try to listen to again. [2.5]
10/10. Fantomas - "Delirium Cordia" : Made it through the entire thing. Like Diva said, it's such a long and varied song that it has a ton of highs and lows. It may as well be split into several songs (not sure why it isn't, honestly). Loved several moments in it, wanted to fall asleep during others (esp. that outro...yawn). Balances out to a slightly-above-average experience overall. [2.7] |
Egarran
10.10.19 | Delìrium Còrdia - I wish you had just gone with a song from Director's Cut. They're great, often spooky and to the point. But still, great band. 3/5
All You Are Going To Want To Do Is Get Back There - Yeah, that's a good kind of spooky. I just want more from this song than one theme. 3/5
The Lament - Dewi did this?? The music at the supermarket is spookier. And better. 2/5 |

DoofDoof
10.12.19 | 6. Cropsey - solid Have a Nice Life tune and the intro is quite creepy...a little unrelated to what follows you could say but it's all good stuff [4]
7. Painless Steel - seductive mildly jazzy ambient cityscape stuff, like it a lot so a well earned [4.5]
8. Phenomenon - this is a bit more genuinely scary, witch doctor-y vibe, drip drip ambience, like it and again ambient works best for scary [4]
9. Babydoctor - this sort of cross genre 'Mike Patton at his most indulgent' stuff is not really my bag [2.5] |

12. The Lament - mild tribulation! I quite like these guys and their mildly tribulating ways. Some satisfying goth tinged chug chug n' croak...but about as spooky as a Halloween special of Strictly Come Dancing lets be real. [3.5]
13. Forest of Evil (Dusk) - enjoyed it so much I listened to the rest of the album (just the one other track), does have a dark technological dread to it, good stuff [3.5] |

10.12.19 | 14. City Song - know this one well, strange thing is this album didn't really call me back as much as I expected, good intro track but not my favourite [3.5]

10.13.19 | Babydoctor (Of Natural History): Long! Long! But it's also kind of interesting throughout. And some definite horror vibes here. A little random too. Love some of the textures, drumming is great, diversity is cool. Don't know if I'll ever return to it. 3.0
Delirium Cordia: LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG! Seriously, spooky doesn't necessarily mean long! I've checked parts of the sections you rec'd. They were alright. Super random though, don't really hear the underlying thread from these bits. Might as well have been an album with 100 tracks. 2.0
All You're Going To Want To Do Is Get Back There: Very very awesome. I got so annoyed with this album popping up in my YouTube recs ALL THE TIME EVERY TIME EVER that I decided to never listen to it, but I'm glad you tricked me into it anyway. Similar to the Bohren one in a way, but I like this more. On the list it goes! 4.0
The Lament: Backwards fire! Always looks cool. Love the 90s feel in the beginning already. Didn't see this coming when the band kicks in, would have loved this back in my teens, but it's still oddly enjoyable I must confess. Nicely immediate and catchy, nothing wrong with that. A little monotonous though. 3.0
Forest Of Evil - Dusk: LOOOONG!!!! What's up with all the ambient tracks too? This is nice I guess. Reminds me of Monolake in a way. Very unfocussed though. 2.8

10.13.19 | City Song: I've been neglecting this one too. Don't know why. This guy seems to enjoy these ghosts... Don't really regret not checking this. It's fine, but too industrial for my tastes. The ending is annoying. Pretentious in a bad way. 2.6
The Blossoming Of Beelzebub: I've never liked any Dir En Grey ever. Let's see whether that will change with this one. The guitar tone in the beginning is nice. Vox are awful. Dislike them with a passion. Drums are overproduced too. Some of these guitar lines are cool and save it from a 1.0, so it's a 1.7
The Golden Rat: Hmmm. Still unsure on this genre. Sometimes I like it, sometimes I really don't. This is too samey. Would be nice in a GameBoy game probably. 2.2
Wiener Blut: Not one of my fave Rammstein songs, but it's good. Always loved Till's sense of humour in their lyrics. 3.6
Opera Of The Frogs: Nice one! Oh those Newgrounds days. I think the music goes nicely with the title, it certainly is spooky in a fun sort of way. Could be from a soundtrack from The Haunted Mansion or something like that. Fun pick! 3.0

10.13.19 | "Babydoctor"
This starts off fairly atmospheric and now it's proggy. This is certainly creepy, but also theatrical. It's actually kinda nice, and despite its length, I'm not really bored. That violin part is neat as well. OH damn, he's growling now, but in a Bungle kinda way? I know that this band is often compared to Bungle though, so I'm not surprised. While I still like Mr. Bungle, it's been a long time since I've been really in the mood for new stuff in this style, but if I was, I'd certainly check this album out.

"All You're Going to Want to Do Is Get Back There"
Pretty strings so far. I like the woodwinds too. This isn't creepy at all, just super quiet. It makes me think of DVD title screen music.

"The Lament"
Riffy so far. Musically this feels kinda generic, and I really don't like guttural growling. Worst song of the month so far, sorry Dewi.

10.13.19 | "Forest of Evil"
A discordant piano is very stereotypically creepy. Now that it's more droney though, it feels peaceful. An expected pickup in percussion? Hmmm, this one is all over the place, isn't it? Surely good, though I'm far from obsessed with it. Maybe a bit lengthy too for what it is.

10.14.19 | "Delirium Cordia" 1/3
I'm gonna listen to this one from beginning to end and rate it even since it's a whole album. Well, that heartbeat sure is creepy, as is Patton's weird moans. 2 minutes in and we already have Gregorian chanting, metal riffs, and orchestral strings. So there's some tablas now and screeching, that's neat. Okay, this is going to be a REALLY tough claim to make, because I loved Mr. Bungle so much that I named my username after one of their songs when I joined back in 2013 and they make songs that are all over the place too and are front by Patton, but damn for an album that's like 74 minutes, why didn't they just break up the tracks into separate songs? The cohesion isn't here enough for this to feel like 1 piece. Random digital sounds and then an explosion... hmmm. And now a riff that sounds like the opening note to Iron Man. It's a doom metal song now, isn't it?! ;) Holy shit, it's only been 17 minutes? Fuck and now some dude in typing on a keyboard over some ominous piano music. Shit, now it sounds like we're in a laundromat about 23 minutes in, except it has a running shower and ping pong table in it for some reason. Damn, they're playing ping pong super fast. They must be pros! Patton is scatting now but over ominous double bass! Wait there are metal riffs. Orchestral vocal-jazz metal? I sincerely can't tell if I'm bored of super excited by this. Someone send help. WAIT COHERENCE! THE HEARTBEAT IS BACK OMG IT'S A CALLBACK, MAYBE THIS IS ONE COHERENT PIECE AND IT ONLY TOOK LIKE 27 MINUTES WHOOOOO. Tuvan throat singing? Sure why not? |
ArsMoriendi
10.14.19 | "Delirium Cordia" 2/3
I mean this is a Mike Patton project afterall, and he does love the whole "everything, but the kitchen sink" approach to music." Wait, lyrics? What? NOT ON MY CREEPY TOO LONG INSTRUMENTAL EXTRAVAGANZA! Okay fine. Cool jazz bass too. Wait, that was a full-on fadeout at about 34 minutes in, this is a new song. You can't fool me, Michael Allan Patton. This tropical bass track is a different song! Fine, I'll keep listening, only because Slothcore is a good guy. Now there's backmasking and piercing sounds and sounds like a gavel gently hitting the judge's stand. Wow, it just suddenly got windy? Is that a tornado outside? Shit. Now it's back to sounding like a horror movie, okay. Okay, so now someone is using a can opener. I hope whatever they're opening tastes good. Maybe tomato paste? I like tomato paste, it's a good thickener whenever I'm making marinara sauce. Another glitchy computer damn, NO WAIT DON'T OPEN IT IT'S A MALFUNCTION AHHH. Still can't tell if I'm thrilled by this or bored, but here we are in the glitch. 46 minutes in. I know that the story behind this is that a guy is being operated on without anesthesia, but it really didn't feel like that until about 49 minutes in with the beeping heart rate machine and weird breathing. Raining sounds and tropical birds... see this is why I can't see this entire album as something about being operated on without anesthesia, like what does bird calls have to do with that? Oh just when it was getting too mellow, here come the bird calls and metal riffs! |
ArsMoriendi
10.14.19 | "Delirium Cordia" 3/3
Now there's crackling and some slow rubbery beeping sounds. It's official, this is more boring than it is thrilling the balance is off! And it was going so strong on the 50/50 too! Maybe I would feel bad for not having the patience for this, but all of the low ratings for this song so far make me feel like I actually have a lot of patience because I'm going to rate it slightly higher, probably. Almost an hour in... still rubbery beeping. So did the patient die? Is that what's going on? That's a creepy quote on the video by the way. Holy fuck, it's still that same beeping and crackling. Is this the rest of the song? Why? That's so bland. I think I get it, the guy being operated on died during the operation, but still, that doesn't mean I wanna hear this boring shit for 15 minutes straight. What is this Tool filler? Ugh, yup over 15 minutes of the same bullshit. That sucks too because it was changing so much throughout the rest of it. Death is endless I suppose. They really are hammering in that point. I get it, okay? I bet most people just skipped past this and if not: good job. This had some great moments, but overall it's too long, clunky, and those last 15 minutes flat out pissed me off. Like at least include a jump scare in the last minute... WAIT THERE IT IS FUCK. +.1 for the jump scare.

10.14.19 | "City Song"
I remember when I first heard of these guys when my friend used to rave about them in 10th-grade Chemistry class. Same friend who got me into Big Black. That was like in 2011-2012, so I assume it was their s/t he was talking about. The atmosphere of this song is VERY Nine Inch Nails, but I suppose less electronic. Commercial industrial minus the industrial? Does that make sense? It's kinda weird that this is classified as noise rock when it isn't really too noisy, maybe the rest of the album is more noisy. To me, this isn't creepy just because it just seems more 2000s "gothy" than it does murderous monster. It's not bad though.

10.15.19 | Delìrium Còrdia - Hate to say this, but i'm not listening to a 74 minute song for the song of the day.
All You're Going to Want to Do Is Get Back There - Very old timey sounding a la the fake static layer that was introduced. A nice song, nothing more, nothing less. 3/5
The Lament - This band's cheesy, and I kind of dig it. Song is pretty safe though, I feel like it could be a lot more interesting. 3/5. decent but nothing to write home about
Forest of Evil - Lots of sounds making a beat. One of them sounds like when you shake a big thin piece of metal, and the other sounds like a castanet. oh and then some repeating synth thing comes in.. how long is this holy heck.... 14 minutes? What is wrong with you people. 2.5/5. also literally no feelings of anything that resembles a forest or the word evil contain within.
City Song - man I haven't heard this band in like 15 years. Assumed they fell off the face of the earth, but here we are. Band is as bad as I remember. I don't know how the song works in the context of the album, but as a standalone it is a solid 1.5/5. I gave it .5 extra points since it wasn't 14+ minutes..
The Blossoming Beelzebub - I've tried to get into these guys a few times, this didn't help. It is an interesting song though, i'll give it that. I didn't really enjoy it, but recognize the effort. 3/5 |

10.16.19 | Stirge - lol new this was a garas rec once that synth melody came in. Sounds like what the album cover portrays, NES soundtrack dungeon-synth. 10.16.19 | 10/11. The Caretaker - "All You're Going to Want to Do..." : Really dig this track. Not as spooky as expected, but the ambiance is great regardless. Love the aesthetic, would've liked a little more variation but I know that's not what this is about. Good stuff. [3.9]
10/12. Tribulation - "The Lament" : Not really 'my thing' but enjoyed it nonetheless. Don't know if I could listen to this level of riffing for an entire album (was a bit worn down by the end of the song and it's not even that long), but a little taste wasn't so bad. [3.3]
10/13. Demdike Stare - "Forest of Evil (Dusk)" : Not bad at all, but relatively flaccid given the monstrous length. Thought it was over near the halfway mark and the back-end doesn't really justify another seven minutes. Creepy it's not; more relaxing than anything, something I could totally zone out to. [2.9]
10/14. Daughters - "City Song" : Know this song like the back of my hand. Love it. 'You Won't Get What You Want' is one of my favorites of 2018 (and probably the whole decade, really), and the opening three-track run is the album's greatest strength imo. 'Long Road' would get a 5.0 and 'Satan in the Wait' would get a 4.9, but I like this one almost as much. A perfect tone-setter. [4.8]
10/15. Dir En Grey - "The Blossoming Beelzebub" : Don't love the vox tone here, if I'm being honest; neither the high-pitched opening stuff nor the strange, warbling/moaning toward the end. Music isn't bad, but pretty standard to this cretin's ears. Nothing really stood out to me, seemed fairly run of the mill. [2.6]
10/16. Stirge - "The Golden Rat" : Neat for about two minutes, but then it continues on for seven more and never goes anywhere remotely interesting. Reminds me of playing RuneScape about seventeen years ago, though, so it has that going for it. I think. [2.0] |

Blaring metal riffs and a moaning lady. Yup there's the metal growling, ugh. I was going to just find this boring, but then it had to get irritating too. Not my thing at all. -.1 for the screaming, although there wasn't too much.

Is dungeon synth a meme genre? Because it seems like it'd be a meme genre. Kinda like how vaporwave is one. By the sound of this song, I'm going to have to say that not I'm sure, but damn is this nerdy as fuck. It sounds like something someone could make on Garage Band. This is WAY too nerdy to be creepy.

10.17.19 | Wiener Blut - I don't think I've ever heard this vocalist sound so theatrical, normally he just talks in a monotone voice. Honestly that was more interesting than a lot of Rammstein I've heard, which isn't saying much cause the band likes their industrial sounding repetition, but this is pretty enjoyable. But also that might be the loudest video on YouTube holy heck. 3/5 |

10.17.19 | "Wiener Blut"
Pretty strings and strong percussion to far. His voice is creepy, but also makes me think of a narrator in a movie opening a film. That riff is okay, very simple and straightforward. Those screeching sounds remind me of children laughing, ew that IS creepy. Oh wow, those translated lyrics make this even more creepy. It's a big cheesy musically, but honestly, everything about it beyond that gave me chills.

10.21.19 | "Opera of the Frogs" - Pretty cool, sounds like something maybe to an indie Tim Burton'ish movie. Kinda annoying at parts, but overall an interesting listen. Bonus points for the halloween atmosphere aka spooky aka the point of these recs... maybe? Still not sure on that one.. 3.5 /5
"Dahmer Does Hollywood" - hmm.. obviously repetitive, but with a focus on lyrics which I think were pretty good. the added flair of organs, electric guitar, and other instruments helps keep the song flowing. never heard these guys before, and didn't really get it at first, so I gave it another spin, and it's a pretty cool track. 4/5
"Darling Didn't we Kill You" - preface, i love Ulver.. a lot.. I don't throw around the word ingenious liberally, but for me they fit the bill. This EP was recorded practically alongside Perdition City which some view as their post black metal magnum opus, yet on Silencing they went for a much more subtle, atmospheric, repetitive sound. It's a good EP, but it's far from their best work, which for me creates the issue I have with it. As a standalone EP, I can see its appeal. It's very atmospheric, a bit film score-like at times, and does create its own interesting atmosphere, but compared to the other albums it's just very okay. Also my favorite song on here is the church-like organs and bells of Not Saved. 3.5/5
I got a cup full of beetle juice by little ugly man - dig the theremin. Never heard this fellow before. Honestly thought this song was pretty fun! makes me want to drink some beetle juice. 3.5/4

10.23.19 | The Golden Rat - 8 bit beats, alright. And some Carpenter vibes. At least there's some nostalgia to this. I feel better about my rec now. 2.5/5
Wiener Blut - Great song, great lyrics. Reminds me of Obituary:
"With the darkness we arise
Your hell is denied
The powers below
Reality's here"
4.1/5
Dahmer Does Hollywood - Niiice. Must check out this dude. 4.2/5
Darling didn't we kill you - I thought this broke my speakers but thankfully it's supposed to sound like that. 2
I'm already afraid of the next song. |
DungeonBoy
10.23.19 | Jupiter 4 - very simple repetitive synth and drums, but those vocals are immaculate. It's cool how the song does kinda build throughout to a climax and helps make it more interesting, but obviously the vocals or the center-point here. I dug it. 4/5 |
Asdfp277
10.23.19 | divaman: yes!! i'm tryna give everything more than two listens before rating |

10.23.19 | "Jupiter 4"
Cool atmosphere. Those vocals are pretty standard for modern indie-pop though. That simple bass is nice though. This isn't really spooky, even if it is kinda dark and gothy sounding, but hey neither is my 2nd rec. Good for sure, but not amazing.
3.6/5 |

10.24.19 | Ulver2 - 2.9 - Like the piano and the mood. The vocals not so much. Hardly holds itself together as a song. |

spoopy vibes !!

10.25.19 | Ok hold on tight cause this is why i can't participate on these lists, I always end up cramming everything:
Fantomas - I guess this hits the spot but 1 hour, dude? I mean... It's obviously good but I have skip parts cause I was starting to pass out. 3
The Caretaker - This was nice, short and sweet. It evokes a strange but conforting feeling. 4
Demdike Stare - Great track but I got the feeling I jammed it at the wrong time and the wrong place. Looks like it'd fit a night drive through the city pretty nicely. 3.5
Daughters - To think they went from a track like "The Theater Goer"to this is just so sad. Already had my share of discussion about this album when it released, but this track is specially boring. 2
Dir en Grey - Sorry, I should have start with saying that I really hate Dir en Grey. 1.5
Stirge - I see what you did there Garas. 3
Rammstein - Rammstein are deviant fucks, but the track rips as everything they do. 4
Opera of the Frogs - Really nice, it has some sort of Motoi Sakuraba vibe (Dark Souls) which automatically adds 1 point to the final score. 4
Amigo the Devil - Pleasant, bluesy, Mexican cemetery bar tune. 3.5
Ulver (Darling) - I love Ulver, I fucking love them, but this was a bit of a slog to get through budg, not helping that I jammed it right after lunch though. 3
Lil'Ugly Mane - Oh, Halloween rap, nice. (Yawns) 3
The Specials - Nothing special about it after all (ha!), although it has some inspired moments, and a nice metropolitan feel. 3.5
Sharon Van Etten - One of the standouts of the album, that's for sure, although said album did little to me in the end. 3.5
Ulver (Funebre) - Obviously A+. When Garm sings, the world stops. 4.5
Rusty Cage - What the hell did I just watch. 1 |

10.25.19 | Rusty Cage - 3.5 - That one hit the spot. Corny, but righteous. |

11. All you are going.... 3.0. tis like sitting beside the log fire, with grandma's music playing on the old gramaphone. I needed a jump scare.
12. The Lament. 2.9 Needed more blood wine. And why does the singer think he issssss a sssssnake, every sssss is exaggerated.
13. Forest of Evil. 3.0. This will go well at a Halloween party.
14. City Song. 3.8 The electricity is coursing through my synapses. One of the spookiest yet.
15. The Blossoming Beelzebub. 2.8 Could picture listening to this as i hike through the suicide forest.
16. The golden rat. 2.0 Great bandcamp page. Thought this would have been more midi synth.
17. Wiener Blut. 3.9 Bad recording on youtube, switch to streaming. Solid track.
18. Opera of the frogs. 3.0. It's good for what it is, but i would like to mash it up and turn it into an EDM banger.
19. Dahmer does Hollywood. 3.4. This is good, straight forward instrumentarion, with a good build vocally. Lyrics are the centrepiece.
20. Darling didn't we kill you. 3.3 Another one for my Halloween party playlist. More horror psych glitchy synthy electro goodness. |
SlothcoreSam
10.27.19 | 21. Cup fulla beetlejuice. 1.5 Starts ok, That cowbell effect is poor, as is a lot of the other effects, sounds like it was made on the original fruity loops. Lyrics are atrocious.
22. Ghost Town. 4.8 Finally a song i know. Love this track, a little bit repetitive, but fuck it, it's a classic.
23. Jupiter 4. 3.0 It's a modern one, listened to this album a little when it came out but kinda forgot about it with all the other good shit this year. It's a bit slow and boring for my current mood, might pop a xan, and try again. And that album cover, is borderline pedo.
24. Funebre. 3.1 Yep another one for my playlist. Minus .5 for vocals, they were not needed
25. The Hearse song, 3.3 this is #1 tending!?¿¡ know idea who this guy is. But it's a great kids song, might teach it to my sproggens, so they can sing it as they trick or sell tricks.
26. Acid Rain. 3.1 Nice start, but didn't do much after.
27. Hamburger lady, 1.fuckoff-song.3 Throbbing Gristle is one of my favorite band names, it's stimulates both my phallus and gag reflex at the same time. Song itself, Jay makes me dizzy, and fucking ANGRY. MAN FUCK THIS SONG. AAAAARRRFFGH.
28. There is no room for ven gecik. 4.0 Love the album cover. One of the spookier tracks this month. Yes this is scary as fuck. This wins creep factor for me. Song itself is pretty cool too.
29. Angst- 2.0, actually maybe this is the scariest, but wouldn't call it a song. But then again i did make all you fukaz listen to Fantomas for an hour.
30. Halloween. Well that was fun, and my rec, AFI at their best.
I'll save the last one. Got to eat the jambalaya i created whilst listening to these. Thanks everyone for a mind expanding month, eye-widening, goosebump-inducing month.

10.27.19 | Cup Fulla Beetlejuice - Holy fuck that was dumb. But I guess it could be labeled as spooky. 2/5
Ghost Town - Where do I know this song from? Suppose it's SOTD. It's good but also boring and needs a good climax. 3/5
Jupiter 4 - Dboy said it. I dig it too. 3.7/5
Funebre - Read the yt comments for this - they're too hardcore for sputnik.

10.28.19 | "The Hearse Song" - Sounds like a poem from scary stories to tell in the dark.. it's uhm, dramatic but more playful, tongue in cheek than scary. Reminds me of a kids song. 3? sure 3/5
"Acid Rain" - that opening riff sound like the start of a truck commercial. lol it was an advertisement for a truck commercial. now onto the song. Dear god, with head phones on my eardrums feel like they are going to explode from those bassy hits, and the thought of that is pretty scary, so bonus points I suppose. Kinda boring and hard to listen to 2.5/5
"Hamburger Lady" 5/5 song name. glad we got the remastered version of this! This is actually terrible and the lowest I've ever rated a song on here ever. 1/5
"no room for ven geck" - lol okay. i love black metal, and weird atmospheric stuff, but those vox are just too funny. garas man, you slay me sometimes. 2/5 |

10.28.19 | 24. ULVER - "Funebre" [3.4]

25. RUSTY CAGE - "The Hearse Song" [3.3]
appreciate the fashion !! big jinkx monsoon vibes, very catchy !
26. LORN - "Acid Rain" [3.3]

27. THROBBING GRISTLE - "Hamburger Lady" [3.5]

10.29.19 | Trist - 1.9 - It's a compelling enough sound clip, but again, it's not a song. |

10.29.19 | lustmord is also an ambient track, not being a song doesn't really mean anything in the spirit of this thread series despite the name |
Divaman
10.29.19 | This came off more like an intro to me than even as an ambient track. I was waiting for music to start, then about three quarters of the way through, I realized there wasn't going to be any. I do usually like your taste, though. But this one felt more like a scary movie clip than a song, and I do still put some emphasis on the idea of a song of the day. |

10.29.19 | (Keine) Angst - this is the furthest I've ever gotten into a song of the day! I'm pretty proud of myself and it looks like I might actually complete this one. My highest was 53 personally, so on one hand color me impressed, oh but as for the "song" 2/5. Thanks for sharing! |

10.30.19 | "Funebre"
Those rolling drums are kinda cool. The vocals are a bit creepy, but only just barely. This kind of reminds me of songs from Coil's The Ape of Naples, but maybe somewhat less eventful. This is fine.
2.9/5
"The Hearse Song"
This guy's voice is so soft. So this is like nerdy folk with dumb lyrics? This is not Spooky at all and reeks of little effort.
2.3/5
"Acid Rain"
Well, this isn't creepy at all. The song is fairly meh too. The video is neat though. Sadly, I don't take visuals into account when rating audio... well at least not consciously.
2.5/5 |
ArsMoriendi
10.30.19 | "Hamburger Lady"
I already know "Slug Bait" and that song is mad creepy, so I'm excited for this one. Yup this is creepy. Minimalistic too, gee... my favorite. This song makes me feel like I'm dying, good job following the theme.
3.5/5
"there is no room for ven gecik"
This sounds like traversing a dirty sewer so far. Oh no, growling. What a slog.
1.8/5
"(Keine) Angst"
Sounds like someone is struggling to open their shed on a cold November night. This is creepy, I'll give you that. It's also not as boring as I thought it'd be.

10.30.19 | 10/17. Rammstein - "Wiener Blut" : Not bad, but totally not my thing. I dunno, too 'structured' or mechanical or austere for me, and this guy's voice has always been a bit offputting. But, as far as Rammstein songs go, this is one of the better ones I've heard. [2.8]
10/18. E-D - "Opera of the Frogs" : Not as terrible I was expecting, but supremely boring, and miles from 'creepy'. Last forty-five seconds are the best, but this is a big *shrug* overall. [2.5]
10/19. Amigo the Devil - "Dahmer Does Hollywood" : A bit parched overall, but I really dug this. Appropriately creepy and a surprisingly easy listen. I'll be listening to this one again for sure. [4.1]
10/20. Ulver - "Darling Didn't We Kill You" : Good in one-minute segments; as an eight-minute endeavor, though, it turns into a big zzzzz. Maybe ambient music isn't for me, but this would've been lovely at about three minutes long. [2.9]
10/21. Lil Ugly Mane - "Cup Fulla Beetlejuice" : One of my favorite songs from that record, and one of the few songs in this list that I'd previously heard. Good shit, slightly spooky, sufficiently bangin'. [4.2]
10/22. The Specials - "Ghost Town" : Don't like the reggae/ska influence on the track, though it does a moderately good job of cranking out that Halloween vibe, so it must be doing something right. Catchy, but weightless. [3.0]
10/23. Sharon Van Etten - "Jupiter 4" : I completely forgot that I'd heard this album before, which pretty much sums up my feelings about each indiviual song: Not bad, but entirely forgettable. Though listening to this, it might've been one of the album's few highlights. (I wouldn't know, I can't remember any other songs from it.) It was enjoyable. [3.2] |
tectactoe
10.30.19 | 10/24. Ulver - "Funebre" : More to my tastes than the last Ulver song recommended here, also more befitting to the theme, I think. Not particularly "spooky" but there's an eerie tone to the calm opening, especially once that whining joins the mix. A little more variation wouldn't hurt, but this was alright. [3.5]
10/25. Rusty Cage - "The Hearse Song" : Honestly not terrible but too corny to take seriously. Not sure if I should be squirming or laughing. Maybe both. I dunno, this is weird, but I didn't absolutely hate it, which might be enough of an endorsement on its own. Maggot pie lmao. [2.5]
10/26. Lorn - "Acid Rain" : Awesome. Relatively short, ambient as fuck, somewhat creepy, groovy, the kind of noise that consumes you. Might have to check out the rest of this album now. [4.5]
10/27. No vote (my own pick).
10/28. Korhadt - "There Is No Room for Ven Gecik" : Interesting to say the least. Kind of has that muddled Cannibal Corpse aesthetic that I don't like, but the vocalist is a little better. Probably the song I'm the least "sure" about of the lot. But I was digging it toward the end. [3.1]
10/29. Trist - "(Keine) Angst" : Weird as a standalone track - is there a short film that accompanies this? Probably not, and a lot of the would-be visual splendor is lost on my shitty imagination. [2.0]
10/30. AFI - "Halloween" : Despite the appropriate title, I cannot stand AFI and this track is a pretty good example of why. [1.0]
10/31. Ministry - "Every Day Is Halloween" : The sub-80s synth-pop aesthetic always makes me cringe, and this is no exception. Six full minutes is not my idea of a good time. [1.5] |
ArsMoriendi
10.30.19 | "Halloween"

10.31.19 | Halloween - Guilty Pleasure 4.5/5
Everyday Is Halloween - How I wish this were true. Pretty good song, albeit a tad long. Catchy chorus, dug that. scrittchy scratchy part wtf dug that. https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?listid=189442&memberid=1122787 |
Divaman
11.04.19 | I'll beat the bushes later today, unless you'd like to. All I really did to get so many recs in October was go to the regulars who usually part of the SOTD who hadn't already given a rec and left them a message in their shout box asking if they had a song for us. |
Trifolium
11.04.19 | Ah that's a good idea! Got the rec-rate nice and high, was already wondering how that happened! |
Divaman
11.04.19 | Yeah, I just send a personal invite to all of the regulars who forget or get sidetracked. They don't all rate all of the songs, but we went from making 3 recs a piece (and possibly needing for some people to make a 4th rec) in August to most people only making 1 rec in October. And we had more people actually rating the songs, too. |
Trifolium
11.04.19 | Just came here to tell you I notified the usual suspects too! Great idea, the more the merrier and it worked out beautifully last month! |
Divaman
11.04.19 | Excellent. I agree the more the merrier. It's cool to make more than one pick, but it's a lot more fun to have a wider group participating. Last month, we even had sixteen or so people rating the earlier songs. It's unfortunate that the participation thins out at the end of the month, but not everybody is as OCD as the core group. :) |
Trifolium
11.04.19 | Yeah exactly. Speaking about core group: ratings incoming! |
Divaman
11.04.19 | Excellent.
I think it's fair to say that we know which song will have the highest rating for October, though. Slint's "Good Morning, Captain", rec'd by tectactoe, is our highest rated song for the month of October. Congratulations, tectactoe! |
Trifolium
11.04.19 | Funebre: Aahhh Ulver. Thanks. Garm is too good, this album is amazing. Not one of the best tracks here but definitely spooky. 4.3
The Hearse Song: Beautiful lyrics. Brought with gusto. Love it. 3.6
Acid Rain: Produced beautifully, nice and deep. Not necessarily very spooky, but it's cool. 3.7
Hamburger Lady: Properly spooky! It doesn't even get boring which is very well done since it's monotonous. Trance inducing and dark. Not something I could listen to a whole lot but this one off is great. 3.8
There Is No Room For Van Gecik: Love the guitar tone here garas, nice and doomy and sometimes even sunny, which contrasts beautifully with the colder parts. A little long but also great. 3.7
(Keine) Angst: The ambient beginning is nice, the muffled beat in the background makes me think of GAS which is one of the biggest compliments I can give. It's spooky alright too. 2.8
Halloween: Fun track, not super spooky in the creepy sense obviously, but it gets the job done. 3.2
(Every Day Is) Halloween: Love the 80s vibe. Nice track, never checked a full album by these guys but maybe I should. That drum machine and scratch freakout is cool. Funky, great groove and flow throughout. Hey Ars, do they have a full-length in this style? That discog is overwhelmingly big (and inconsistent judging by the averages). 4.2 |
