| Great Metal Bands with Truly Extreme Vocals
Extreme, unconventional, weird vocals are one of the most defining and unmistakably exclusive traits of extreme metal and a double-edged sword which has allured many to Metal-verse but in the meantime has prevented many others from getting into it.
Death, Black, and Grindcore are mostly pointed out as the most extreme radical styles of Metal; perhaps most of all because of the prevailing extremity of the vocals. The unique aesthetics of Metal finds its ultimate sense through rejection, opposition and reversal of the conventional mainstream aesthetics. Thus we can’t evaluate this type of music by the conventional standards.
In the intrinsically extreme and radical world of Metal with its very vast range of non-ordinary vocals, there are some rare and incredible examples which in fact sound pretty inhumane and may be regarded as the most extreme of the very extreme - and the very best of course! Here I have just named a few albums. I’ve kept myself from giving in to anything other than the firs rate albums by great bands.
Of course some legendary bands like Summoning, Samael, Burzum, Immortal, Beherit, Hate Forest, Absurd, Mayhem, Inquisition, etc. and some more traditional bands such as Judas Priest, Mercyful Fate/King Diamond, and W.A.S.P. have had very distinct vocals, especially by their contemporary standards, but they are all too well known to need noticing. | 1 | | Bethlehem Dictius Te Necare
Very high pitched shrieking Tortured and really insane vocals of Rainer Landfermann in this masterpiece which may be called Bethlehem’s best album is truly devastating. | 2 | | Infester To the Depths... In Degradation
Surely one the greatest Death Metal albums I’ve ever heard, featuring one of the most unique Inhumane demonic vocals ever by Jason Oliver who deserves much more recognition than this. | 3 | | Silencer (SWE) Death - Pierce Me
Nattramn’s very high pitched voice is imbued with pain and madness. One either loves it or hates it. Many Metalheads don’t like his voice and some even find it very frightening! I think it is great, totally deserving this DSBM masterpiece. | 4 | | Nazgul De Expugnatione Elfmuth
The incredible shrinking tortured voice of Zakrathor is unforgettable in this gem of symphonic/Epic Black Metal which is, unfortunately, the band’s only full length. | 5 | | Demilich Nespithe
Antti Boman’s guttural weirdly “burped” vocals are just amazing, as is the album itself. | 6 | | Tengger Cavalry Blood Sacrifice Shaman
This great band combines metal with central Asian traditional music elements, including Mongolian throat singing which deeply affects the soul of the listener. | 7 | | Deinonychus The Silence of December
The crazed tormented vocals are surely one of the main elements that have made this into a crashingly great album. | 8 | | Khanate Khanate
Alan Dubin’s agonized emotional and ultimately insane vocals in this rare gem sound as if he is really getting tortured. A true masterpiece of Drone/Doom Metal imbued with misery and anguish. | |
