10.30.19 | this is a nice idea for the songs of the month, I like it
I think the best rec I ever got was from Sowing just as I was discovering mewithoutYou. He gave me the song "Rainbow Signs" and it just absolutely blew me away and solidified mewithoutYou as one of my favorite bands ever.

10.30.19 | Yeah Trif, really the stuff this site needs these days. Mine would be Emma Ruth Rundle - Protection, from the album Marked for Death. It was Relinquished who rec'd it.

10.30.19 | Thought so too guys, some Sputnik love in the balance. Adding them now! |
JohnnyoftheWell
10.30.19 | Damn, I think I only made it about 1/3 of the way through Oct - let's give this a whirl. Many of the the best 'recs' I had were specific people encouraging me to get further into groups I was already semi-interested in (but wouldn't have explored much further)
Macaroom - Tombi (from Swimming Classroom)
This one goes out to my buddy coachcake, who pushed these guys my way at exactly the right time & place. I wrote a review explaining this further, but they've since become one of my favourite electronic groups and are wonderful as downtime music with a bit of bounce. This is the track that really drew me in to begin with

10.30.19 | I'll rec you an album right now and you'll have to post even if you hate it! |
Trifolium
10.30.19 | They so did Egarran! Look at that shoutbox filled to the brim with stuff!
But if you can't remember any personal recs, there are tonnes of indirect recs that made you check bands or tracks right? They count too. The most beautiful gifts could be those accidental ones. Through the Deweekly threads for instance, or Song Of The Day or other user lists. |
Egarran
10.30.19 | My best discoveries on here were Kishi Bashi, Disillusion and Enisum. But I've used all those before.
Also I just realized that for some reason being a SOTD guarantees I will never listen to that song again. |
Trifolium
10.30.19 | And tracks you've rated highly in previous Song Of The Day months? Maybe you checked and loved albums found through these? Or otherwise just rec us something, that is also a gift of course, but to us ♥
''Also I just realized that for some reason being a SOTD guarantees I will never listen to that song again.'' This is sad Egarran :-( |

10.30.19 | 'Dinah and the Beautiful Blue' by Thomas Feiner & Anywhen which was rec'd by Lotus/Clover who isn't so active round here now, an absolute atmospheric stunner
Then 'Midnight Willie' by Kauffman & Caboor which was rec'd by SandwichBubble, recent find and a vintage classic |
Trifolium
10.30.19 | Thanks Doof! Do you have links for those?
I'll add the first one now and if the time comes for second recs I'll add the Kauffman & Caboor one too. |

10.30.19 | "You Wrecked My Hair" by Brainaic from Bonsai Superstar
A few years ago there was this thread about unlikely genre fusions. You know, the kinda thing where someone could be like "I like hip hop AND black metal, but is there any blackened hip hop out there?" Me being me, I decided to ask if there was a band who made a fusion of electronic and noise rock because I thought it'd be neat. In comes user NeroCorleone80 to rec me Bonsai Superstar by Brainiac. I believe he linked me this song... but even if he didn't, I listened to this one before I checked out the album in full and I got obsessed with it. Fast forward about 3 years? Brainiac is now in my top 5 favorite artists of all time, and this rec is the only Sputnik rec to have ever been able to achieve that. Nero, come back, oh and ZombieToyDuck too. I miss them both.

10.31.19 | so: fazerdaze's little uneasy, yeah, two more months left but i'm pretty confident this will be my SOTD. song of the decade! so stoked you started off with that track, trif, it really is some exiting genre of celestial magnificence. obviously my rating is a 5.0
for emma ruth rundle, i'll comfortably give that track a 4.5. believe it was dewi as well who pushed me toward her earlier some heavy ocean LP, which i love, and marked for death i love about as much! i'm familiar enough with the album anyway to throw a solid 4.5 at that track without much forethought |

10.31.19 | okay here's my rec, i put a lot of thought into it. Ages ago I was looking for some dark folk music, something more on the instrumental side, but with everyone's favorite buzzword.. atmosphere. a user named TheSpirit sent me this in my inbox and I checked it out and I absolutely fell in love with it to the point of reviewing it, slapping a 4.5 on it, and pretty much recommending it to everyone who is looking for some brooding dark folk music. It's a German guy with a guitar and a crooning voice, who I've personally shared some exchanges with on gear. If one person connects with this as much as I have, my work here would be complete.

11.02.19 | ''Little Uneasy'' - Even though I hate indie stuff because they get super boring after a very short time, I must confess this is not bad, not bad! It actually felt great on this gloomy, rainy day - and I have no clue why. Probably the usual "budgie-effect"? 3.6 (Too bad the girl in the vid has so boyish legs... hahaha!)
''Rainbow Signs'' - Well, this is what I talked about... the first half is boring, and that 2 minutes of heavier punch is still leaves me unsatisfied. Not my thing. 2.4 |

11.04.19 | Dunno how I missed this, I will catch up on tracks sometime this week.
Not an actual "recommendation" (because I rarely get rec'd stuff on here) but I checked out Fire! Orchestra's 'Arrival' solely thanks to Dewinged's enthusiastic review. (Which eventually led me to check out their entire discog, which is collectively great.) So my song for this month will be the opening track to that album, called "(I Am A) Horizon".
At work right now so I can't find a YouTube link - either someone can do it for me or I will get to it later tonight. |

11.04.19 | Little Uneasy - Thank god we aren't trying to do spooky anymore, even though i'm not really sure if that was even the point of last month, tbh i'm not sure what any of that was.. This song is really awesome peaceful music. A nice break from metal this afternoon. Great production, and really sweet blend of fuzzy guitar tones and shoegazey reverb laden riffs. Pop oriented structure, but it in a indie dreamy kinda way. Solid 4/5
Rainbow Signs - Ah MWY. I like a few songs. A -> B life is their "good" album according to me. Like them most at their post-hardcore "YOURE NICE AND BLUE" times, but here we are. lead guy pretentiously rambling about god knows what. I kid, or do I? Pretty good track though, dug it more than I thought I would, but still lacks any real substance. generous 3.5/5 |
Trifolium
11.04.19 | Rainbow Signs: Love the loosenes of the drumming, the guitars are cool too, but it's a little too melodramatic and the vocals (first half) remind me of Passanger which isn't a good thing. Also halfway through I was kind of done with it. The climax is nice. Not so much the screamo vox. I'm all conflicted about this. 2.8
Protection: One of my nicest finds on the website, this Sput-fave lady. Great vibes and voice. 4.6
Tombi: Nice programmed beat, airy vibes, bleep bloops, drum fills. Fun track. Happy Japanese in music doesn't distract me too much anymore because there sure are many great groups who do things just a tad differently over there. The rapping was a cool touch too haha. 3.7
Dinah And The Beautiful Blue: Oldschool energy, I like this style. Also the production is totally gorgeous. Man. And some nice touches to cut through the sweetness here. 3.8

11.04.19 | Macaroom - 3.5 - I'm a little iffy on the vocals - this girl sounds like she's about 14. But I like the song itself, and the instrumentation and arrangement. And at least the vocals aren't harsh - maybe just a bit too airy. |

11.05.19 | 1. Little Uneasy. 3.2. nice and dreamy by this kiwi.
2. Rainbow Signs. 5.5 This song featured in my top 20 songs (no 18) of 2015, and will most likely be in my top 100 tracks of the decade. Also my fav mtw song ever. great fucking choice!
3. Protection. 4.5 Love her voice, straight away floored. Distorted guitars add a sense of fear to the dreary mood setting drum and bass. Albums going on my to listen pile.
4. Tombi. 3.8 Now onto some dreamy electro pop, but this time with a Japanese flavour. Again great voice. This works, but not really my go to. |
Divaman
11.05.19 | Thomas Feiner and Anywhen - 2.7 - Not the worst I've ever heard, but too draggy, and too many strings for my taste. |

Hey garas, I thought you would perhaps dig the E R Rundle a little more. What's it that keeps you back with that one? |
garas
11.05.19 | I usually 3.0 something which is nice (talented musician, great production etc.), but not exactly my taste. So I usually listen to my 3.0s one or two times and probably that's all. (This gave me a list idea!) But my gf loved it, so I'm sure I have to listen to her a lot more in the future, hahaha! |
Trifolium
11.05.19 | Hahaha! Gotcha. She's got great taste! |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.05.19 | 1. Little Uneasy - Lol of course this was a budgie rec. I like the distortion tones and easygoing tempo here but those melodies aren't grabbing me much. 3.4
2. Rainbow Signs - Well, Pale Horses is one of my two AOTD contenders and this is one of its best tracks... Great stuff, but I don't listen to this one in isolation often; the reprise of the title track or that wonderful coda never hit as hard without hearing the whole album. 4.9
3. Protection - Been meaning to check her for a while and I think I was putting it off because I didn't expect anything as urgent or dynamic as this. Not sold either way on her voice and the lyrics are so-so but this track rises and falls at just the right rate and I def feel a need to check more now. 3.7/5
5. Dinah and the Beautiful Blue - That vocal tone feels decisively Doof so no surprise to see who re-rec'd it. I quite like this but not in a way I'd normally feel like putting a score to, but I found myself increasingly drawn into the atmosphere as the song went on so imma punch up 3.8 |

I really enjoyed country music. Then Boney rec'd me this whole album, with this being my favorite song from it. Now I love country music. |
DungeonBoy
11.05.19 | Protection - Heard the name before, now heard the music today. I could see why people like this. Gonna get flak for this but vox are a little annoying, those inflections.. but on the other hand I dig the gritty parts. cool production and vibes. I give it a 4/5 for being unique.
Tombi - I don't know Johnny, but I picture a grown man sitting on the floor of a room covered in anime posters and pikamon plush toys. Song is.. pleasant enough i suppose. 2.5/5
Dinah & The Beautiful Blue - whoever wrote the music was probably very disappointed when they heard there was going to be these vocals on top of it. I don't even know what to rate this but since I have to: 3/5 |
JohnnyoftheWell

11.07.19 | ''Little Uneasy''
Very alternative rock so far. Wait, there are the dream-pop type vocals. This sounds like an updated version of something by the Cocteau Twins. It's good, but not great.
3.3/5
"Rainbow Signs"
It's a Sputcore band I've never heard anything by! Here we go! Ah, it's depressing indie rock. His voice is weird like he has something in this throat. The shouted vocals made this go from okay to kinda lame and a bit emo. No thanks. -.2 the second half of the song.
2.8/5 |
ArsMoriendi
11.07.19 | ''Protection''
This is actually really nice. Noisy, but pretty. Her voice and the instrumentation both remind me a little of Jenny Hval, whom I like an album by. I wonder if it's worth checking a whole album by her.
3.9/5
''Tombi''
What is this weeb shit? Oh god, she's rapping in Japanese over bland club music. I hate this. Why is this boring pop song 6 minutes long?
2/5
"Dinah and the Beautiful Blue''
This is very pleasant and seems filled with wonder, but I wish the vocalist was less mumbly. Very pretty song regardless.
3.7/5
My song is clearly a 5/5 because Nero is a rec god.
''Innocent Blood, Barbarian Blade''
So far, this sounds very medieval and nerdy. This seems like a transition track, so I'm having trouble really forming any strong opinion on it.
2.5/5 |

Well, I'm pretty nerdy and I do love medieval music too, haha! Btw, you're right Ars, this is more or less a transition track but I really like songs like these becasue I find them very inspiring and relaxing. Especially that flute! Ahhhhh! |

11.07.19 | ''Rainbow Signs'' - 1.0, yeah this sucks
''Tombi'' - my soul consumed this track 4.4
"Dinah and the Beautiful Blue" - this is what someone listens to when they want to appear dark and mysterious or something? it's pretty but masturbatory and hollow 2.2
''You Wrecked My Hair'' - it's listenable despite itself, which is a notable achievement, i'll give it 2.8
''Innocent Blood, Barbarian Blade'' - it's tough for dungeon ambient stuff to break out of good territory. this is definitely good, though: 3.3

11.10.19 | Fazerdaze - A Little Uneasy: Really pleasant washed-out stuff that I like but don't love... yet. Would probably do a similar thing to The War on Drugs, though, where with a bit of repeated listening would become one of my favourite things ever. 3.8/5.0
mewithoutYou - Rainbow Signs: I do prefer the immediacy of other songs on this album (lookin at Red Cow) but I can't deny the second half is a good one. 3.7/5.0 also
Emma Ruth Rundle - Protection: given sitruk has tried to get me to jam this lady for ages it's solely my bloody fault. This was great. Moody, hefty and I love that weird lilt her voice has. 4.1/5.0
Macaroom - Tombi: definitely getting further exploration. This made me feel very, very happy and floaty. 4.2/5.0
Thomas Feiner - Dinah and the Beautiful Blue: Clover rec'd me this one too I believe in the way back when. Album is a stunning work of art and this song is no exception. 4.4/5.0
Brainiac - You Wrecked My Hair: Had to listen again because I only started liking this about halfway in. The second listen, once I'd adjusted, was really fuckin cool. Didn't think it'd work as well as it did. 3.8/5.0
Erang - Innocent Blood...: really bloody pretty. I've definitely heard this before, but I'll happily hear it again. 4.0/5.0
The Gloaming - Áthas: I wanted to like this more than I did, I think - sound a bit 'movie credits' to me which sorta harms it a bit. Understanding Gàidhlig would probably help too. It WAS pleasant though, I didn't hate it. 3.3/5.0
Sterbend - Einsamkeit: ditto Gloaming really. Maybe it works better as part of the wider picture but this kinda passed through me a bit. DSBM isn't normally my thing though, really. 3.1/5.0
Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - Bill's Mandolin: bit of a stomper with some sweet psych stuff going on, shockingly for a band with that name. I really, really like that opening riff. The rest was pretty nice too. 3.8/5.0
And that's me caught up :]

11.10.19 | "Áthas"
Pretty piano so far. Those vocals make me think of Phil Collins a bit, but softer and more Celtic? The way pronounces those hard Cs is kinda gross, but the rest is pleasant.

11.11.19 | You Wrecked My Hair: Love the guitars and drums, vox and effects are nice too. Nice one! Short, punchy and sweet. 3.8
Innocent Blood, Barbarian Blade: Very medieval, am not usually a fan of flutes. It works here though, this sounds like a soundtrack to a movie or series. Two lovers in a meadow, something goes wrong. It all becomes a little too Knights & Merchants for me halfway through. 2.6
Áthas: This is a bit too much for me, although it was nice and comforting. 2.7
Sterbend: I don't really like these vox, the drum and guitar sound and icy atmosphere are cool though. As long as the dude isn't screaming I love it. 2.7
Bill's Mandolin: The tone of this is delicious! So warm and colourful and saturated. Also it's fun and energetic and diverse. Melodies are cool, the freakout at the end too. Great pick. Definitely going to check the album. 3.8
Embers: Love this guy's accent. Music is nicely grey and moody. I think I might have to check this too because this rules. 3.8

DungeonBoy
11.11.19 | Áthas - conflicted a bit with this one. The production is pretty incredible. The piano and strings are very nice, the vocals are rich, but somehow I find them a bit jarring. The annunciation is rough to my ears. Overall the song is pretty okay, kinda moody at times, and uplifting at others, but honestly just not my cup of tea. 3/5 for the performance and production but I would probably never listen to this again.
Einsamkeit - Terrrrible intro.. but I guess it's DSBM so.. ya know. Honestly this might be my least favorite subgenre of BM. I dig Gris and Shining though. The vocals just come across as silly to me so it totally loses the effectiveness it's aiming for, and while the atmosphere is the selling point to this repetitive slough of a song it just leaves me feeling very underwhelmed. 2.5/5 - the music saves this
Bill's Mandolin - Solid execution. Nicely layered, good song writing, but really not my style. 3/5
Embers - Can't vote for my own rec, but re-listened to it this morning, and it never gets old. Haunting, dark, oozes atmosphere, 5/5. So simple. So effective. I wrote a review for it on this site if you want to read my hyperbolic rambling. If you dig this track, jam the EP, it is like 20 minutes. |

11.12.19 | Robbie Basho - 3.2 - I was totally digging the three-minute instrumental intro - it's purdy. I had to deduct a little when the vocal kicked in, though. |

A bunch of japanese artist come together to go full gothic for one album. The song is one of the most fitting closers I've heard for an album, it contrasts the noise from the previous songs in a beautiful way. |

11.12.19 | The Afghan Whigs - Bulletproof (off of Black Love)
a gift from: butcherboy
He didn't necessarily introduce me to this song or album, but he did insist I listen to the band (upon the realease of their then new album In Spades) and I did and I did not regret a single second. It's that cheesy old rock music with bad vocals and I love it. (I predict an ArsMoriendi 2)

11.12.19 | Rocky Mountains - 3 minute intro of an acoustic guitar getting finger picked to death, the only saving grace is the mixing the of the violins which aren't super interesting themselves, but in the mix add substance. Then wtf, there are vocals, but not the kind of vocals that would sound good in this jangly mess, but oddly operatic and shaky. Meanwhile that guitar is getting punished, literally zero dynamics except for hard af. 5:00 minutes in is lol worthy, as there are two guitars playing as hard and fast as possible, to no actual rhythm so it creates this weird overlap that just sounds like improv noise. I have two thoughts on this track. It is very bad, but it is also very unique. I can't rate unique stuff as a 1, since 1 should be reserved for the truly mundane. I guess it's a.. 2/5? |
Papa Universe
11.12.19 | thought you could spend a month without me? well, tough |

11.12.19 | 6. You Wrecked My Hair - This should be totally up my street; sounds like Confusion is Sex-era SY mixed with Polvo. Listened to it without paying much attention, thought I mildly disliked it and then gave it a more focused list. Nice stuff, I'll make a note to jam this album when this mindnumbing end of decade run-up is over and I clear up Polvo's discog 3.7
7. Innocent Blood, Barbarian Blade - I think the strongest thought I had while listening to this was of whether it reminded me more of Runescape or the Witcher. Still uncertain 2.4
8. Áthas - Piano on this is a treat, vocals took a while to warm up to but also dec. Very pure vibes here, close to outright cheese but there's just enough going on melodically to hold it back. Makes me think a little of Matryoshka, or maybe Steven Wilson at his most kitsch. Nice. 3.3
9. Einsamkeit - Oh heck, budgie turned up the metal. Those vocals are giving me visions of screaming goats. Bass is the star player here. Some of the instrumentals are pretty cool, those sustained arps are pretty evil. Drumfill around 5:30 is the highlight 2.8
10. Bill's Mandolin - The moment this came on my mood lifted a bit. Fun psych vibes all over the shop. Olivia Tremor Control meets Lonerism; dynamic stuff, plenty of good ideas here. 3.6/5
11. Embers - This caught me by surprise, very engaging track. I didn't think this sound was my jam anymore, but this was well executed. Excellent chord choices, gorgeous vocal tone and a lovely dry guitar/murky bass tone duality that pair together perfectly. 4.0
12. Rocky Mountain Raga - Damn, I remember this from February! That banjo(?) tone sounding fresh as ever and those vocals are a cheer. Slightly different hearing this in gloomy November but still excellent 4.0 |

11.16.19 | Hello friends
1. Little Uneasy - Fazerdaze - Ah this is kinda neat. It's nothing extraordinary but that is okay. Just some pleasant dream pop. 3.4
2. Rainbow Signs - mewithYou - I'm an absolute sucker for this type of music. I'm not super well versed on mewithoutYou's music, but I adored this. 4.1
3. Protection - Emma Ruth Rundle - aye this is pretty fuckin cool 3.7
4. Tombi - Macaroom - 3.1 Hm, I can't say I will come back to this, but I'm in a good mood, so this is fine. I enjoy bubbly jpop here and there. It dooooes go on a bit longer than it needs to though.
5. Dinah and the Beautiful Blue - David Kauffman and David Gaboor - neat 2.9
6. You Wrecked My Hair - Brainiac - Jesus the first minute was some serious Rob Zombie vibes. The chorus and bridge is fucking fantastic though sooo 3.5
7. Innocent Blood, Barbarian Blade - Erang - 2.5 Cool I guess
8. Athas - The Gloaming - Ah yea, cool album cover 2.6
9. Einsamkeit - Sterbend - AHHHHHHHH That was my favorite part. The first time, not the other times. I saw a band a couple days ago, and the back up vocalist screamed the same exact way, and I can't get over it, nor can I get into it. 2.2
10. Bill's Mandolin - Psychedelic Porn Crumpets - Some heaaaavy King Gizzard vibes with this one. This sounds like King Gizzard, this is just King Gizzard. I like it though, it's cool. 3.5

Oh and Ars I had to edit your text because I couldn't add more characters into the box. Sput wouldn't let me :-( |

11.18.19 | Sarah - I've always dug this chick's voice, I think I first heard this band in an Urban Outfitters watching my g/f shop for like 3 hours there... I used to listen to The Kids Were Wrong a lot. It was kind of a guilty pleasure. That song is better than this one, this one is a bit too poppy for its own good. but on the other hand the production is fantastic, and i do dig the voice.. oh man, here I am all conflicted. okay here's a 3.5, now scram!
[I Am a] Horizon - never heard! this band before but I've! seen their name! and wondered what they! were all about. 13 minutes you son! of a gun. Useless cacophony of an intro, thank god that's over. oh, those vocals, DIG THEM. actually really dug the way this built up over the course of its play. I was gonna tell you where to stick your 13 minute rec, but now I think i might put it elsewhere. 4 my dude.. and a solid one at that. |

11.18.19 | "Sarah" - Made me sleepy. Not any bad though. 3.0
"(I Am A) Horizon" - First things first: I hate the band's name, that "!" is the lamest thing ever. The vocals feel very unnecessary, killed the whole thing for me. Otherwise I'd love it... too bad. 2.6
''Kiss Another Day Goodbye'' - Aaaaaah, I wasn't really in the mood for this. Otherwise I think I kinda liked it. 3.0
"Rain Upon The Impure'' - After 15 seconds in, I knew I like this, the only question was just how much. ENORMOUS amount of reverb, evil atmosphere, interesting mix - kinda Paysage-ish! 4.2
"Tzar Morei'' - Goooooooooooood! (And terrible band name again...) It took me a while to realise it is in Finnish: I was confused because Finnish and Hungarian are related languages, and the pronounciation is very-very similar, like a weird Hungarian baloney, hahaha! Very great and diverse stuff, enjoyed it a lot! 4.0
''Lore'' - Could have been shorter, imo. The guitar tone is super tasty, and the drums sound very organic (Fenriz's seal of approval, haha!), but... too long. Nice jam, but nothing more - it'd be great background music. And I almost forgot: that small ambient section in the middle was SO good, I'd chop off the first section and start the song from there. 3.4 |
DungeonBoy
11.18.19 | "Kiss Another Day Goodbye" - I went to school with a guy named David Kaufman, but this certainly isn't him. this song is good, but i don't think it hits me the way it's supposed to hit me. it's the most good song on this list so far. 3/5
"Rain Upon The Impure" - There a swarm of bees around my head? oh no, just some grim atmospheric black metal to complement this dreary autumn day. The epic choir is a nice touch. *checks YouTube time after about 5 minutes* this track is 14 minutes, wtf is wrong with you people. This is very okay, nice and grim, and the choirs set it apart, but kinda a slough to get through 2.5/5
Tzar Morei - If youre listening to this on headphones, RIP eardrums. sometimes I'll watch YouTube videos on mixing/mastering, and the general wisdom is "you don't ever want your track to clip, unless that is the effect you are intentionally going for" and i'm over here with my finger in my nose saying, who in the world would ever intentionally go for that, and here we are. There's a song somewhere in the mess, because I hear some dude going Oohaaoohaaoohaaa amidst the sound of gurgling blood pouring out of my auricular cavities. 2.5/5
|
DungeonBoy
11.18.19 | Lore - oh.. a 15 minute track, you really shouldn't have.. a pretty balanced track thank god. Y'all like fuzzy guitar tones with a dude that sings out of key (aka stonerrr rocckkk bruuhhhhh). I actually dug this a lot lol. 4/5, honestly one of the best songs i've heard from this genre that doesn't do a lot for me.. I like Pallbearer though, so maybe i can get a few scene points for that, even though I know it aint much. |
Divaman
11.19.19 | John Moreland - 3.4 - A bit like a folkier Springsteen. Which isn't a terrible thing. After the last few days, I was going to award this an extra .2 if it was under 5 minutes, but it's 5:02. So close! |

11.20.19 | I don't really understand this but Diva asked me to contribute so hopefully i do this correctly but I thnk my first truly important rec was from the divaman himself who gave me Midnight Oil-Diesel and Dust which surprisingly blew my mind annd still does to this day. It never really was something up my alley but the well-crafted songwriting and hookiness initially drew me in. The retaining infectious quality and intelligent take on pop rock solidified my love for it. However, the political and bold lyrical stance is what really makes this album special, unique and ahead of its time decades later even. |

Very dark and brooding so far. Not my thing. Too minimalistic for me.
2.9/5
"'Rocky Mountain Raga''
I remember this one! It was chosen the last time I hosted a month. The theme was "what the fuck am I listening to?" and it really impressed me. American primitive guitar and shaky old man vocals, but it keeps itself interesting by constantly changing and having high energy! By the way, can I host next February? Feb's my birth month. :P Song is just as good as it was the first time I heard it.
4.4/5
"Sarah"
So this is the band budgie is always talking about. It's very plain. Is this even dream pop or just indie pop? I find this too clear and not atmospheric enough to really feel dreamy. Maybe it's just dream pop for people who care about Beach House? Not for me.
2.6/5
''(I Am A) Horizon''
Nice violin plucking so far. Sput tags this as jazz, but it sounds like Modern Period classical so far, hmmm. WHOA, THOSE VOCALS THOUGH! THEY CAME IN PERFECTLY AND I LIKE THAT BASS. This got so jazzy. I like the trumpet too. This rules.
4.9/5 |

11.20.19 | Ars are you a Pisces? Did not have you down as an Aquarius |
DungeonBoy
11.20.19 | "Blacklist" - I love the way this guitar sounds. as someone who is constantly trying to get some good mic'd classical and acoustic guitar takes, this is perfect and I like it. I mean, yeah it's a 5/5 production, except for that daggon tamborine.. that's like a 2/5. but who cares, back to the song. Very good vocals, lyrics, song: 4/5.
Split End - a johnny rec.. wait wait, don't tell me.. Japanese? hi-yah suckas! wait.. but i've actually heard this before, was this song posted as news? when the chorus started and she starts belting out the, "A SWEATER GORO GOTTA DO THE TUNIC A HE!" it's like pretty much impossible to not bob your head, i've tried like 4 times.. failed every time.. fine.. 3.5/5 |
ArsMoriendi
11.20.19 | ''Kiss Another Day Goodbye''
A man with his guitar. It's pleasant, but nothing about it feels unique or interesting. Background music.
2.5/5
''Rain Upon The Impure''
14 and a half minutes of black metal? Oh no. Will I ever understand this genre? Low mixed growling, chanting, and drums drowned out by some guitar riffs. If there's bass, then it's mixed even lower than everything else. Fuck, why does so much black metal seem to hate the bass guitar? And no, this isn't me asking for you guys to link me bass-heavy black metal. >:( 11 minutes in and I still don't get it. I always finish these things though.
2/5
"Tzar Morei"
Very floaty and noisy. It has the epic feel to it. Wait, the guitar got flashy. This is very post rocky. Cool enough.
3.4/5
I'll listen to the other 2 later |

11.20.19 | @Johnny: I'm an Aquarius. I don't believe in Astrology at all though, so I'm not surprised that I don't line up with the description for it. Some guy told me that my moon is in Scorpio though, whatever that means. |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.20.19 | Haha, you can not believe in astrology all you like but it's still going to find you (I believe in this statement far more than actual astrology ;]). That figures though; Aquarius's in my experience are effusive, creative and at least a little scatty, but having a Scorpio moon would tempter that somewhat

11.20.19 | Omg Scorpio and Virgo this makes so much sense
"Virgos are blessed with a powerful intelligence AND equally cursed with a leaning towards self-criticism and judgment. They can turn that ‘laser beam’ of perceptiveness on anyone, anytime, but mostly it’s (sadly) focused on themselves"
Dunno how self-critical you are, but this is a mood
budgie rising/ascendent and moon are like the next two most important bits of your chart after your sun (the only one people normally refer to |

11.20.19 | Trif means that you're assertive in a roundabout wry way that would be potentially manipulative and/or callous if combined with other signs, but in your case is more emotionally concerned and sensitive (cancers are traditionally moody and scorpios are traditionally schemers, so these either cancel each other's worst parts out or snowball into awfulness I guess lol). You also have two out of three water signs, cute!

11.22.19 | 1. Little Uneasy - I own this album! I never listen to this album! Ok, not that extreme but I rarely listen to this album. Bit too inoffensive and generic but it's NICE MUSIC. [3.5]
2. I've listened to this album before! I can't remember anything about it! So this band, very sput, very MOR indie, very 'not quite as grabby as The Antlers', very...next! This is the new breed of 'dad rock', ahm a just sayin' [3.0]
3. I've listened to this album before! I can't remember anything about it! Emma Strewth 'What a' Trundle - it's a PJ Harvey song with a singer who don't OWN a song like PJ Harvey. It's alright. Like the previous song it throws in the epic noisy bit to tell you 'I am song and I hath decided to tell you I hath reached climax so we don't feel awkward as to why we hooked up today, we both satisfied'. [3.5]
4. Tombi - breathy baby speak plinky plonk, and within the genre there's better than this - the rap just made me picture a rap battle between the usual tough guys and then this. Basically I had to start thinking about something more entertaining than this non-song. A generous [2.5]
6. You Wrecked My Hair - I've listened to this album before! I remember this one! I like it but also not 100% my thing all the time - I actually don't think it's all that much of a genre mash on this song...quite a lot of stuff sounds like this and wouldn't call itself majorly experimental. Good tune though, best so far by far. [4.0]
7. Barbarian swords dungeons and dragons song - "eeeerang me' lord?" or maybe with the sheep at the start more "ewe rang me' lord"? Was this an intro, will there be a song? Incidental music for school trips to medieval forts or something - am I allowed to say it's naff? Yes? It's a bit naff. [2.5] |
Trifolium
11.22.19 | DoofDoof coming in to steal the win. |

11.22.19 | 8. Ive listened to this album! I quite like this band! This brings some of ye olde celtic folky cheese vibes and those vocals are also a bit stilton. What did I rate the full album of this cheese? {checks} 3.0. I concur, I also rate this individual tune a [3.0]
9. Dwelling Lifeless - I mean great title, that's me a large proportion of the time. It's lo fi black metal, I kinda guessed it would be from that bandname, track name and art. It's pre good actually, the vocals sound like those times I locked the ex out the flat when she'd come home late drunk and wanted an argument - something distant, ghoulish and primal about those. These vocals sound like they want to take a pair of scissors to your manhood, strangely effeminate. [3.5]
10. Bill's Mandolin - I've listened to this! I know this! Sort of the middle ground between Tame Impala and King Gizzard so very 'on trend'...which gets my hackles up. What did I rate the album itself {checks} A 3.0, hmmm hmmm, I concur, how astute of me...I award this a [3.0]
11. Embers - FIELDS OF FUCKING MILDEW. Mildew?
Mildew?! Who gives a flying fuck about mildew? We all know someone who smells faintly of mildew and it makes us all want to send said individuals to an early grave. Have some self respect mildew man. I hate mildew. We all hate mildew. This band named themselves after fucking mildew. Not just that - they named themselves after a shit tonne of mildew, fields of it. They also had the gumption to then be an incredibly boring band on top of that brutal insult. [2.0] |
DoofDoof
11.22.19 | 12. I own this album! I love this album! This will fucking win for me this week! Yaaaar. Basho is god, fuck everyone else on this list. Even fuck Thomas Feiner... This isn't the best tune on the set though. Still fucking immense. Fuck. [4.5]
13. Sarah - Sarah is a middle hitter girls name for me, yes I dated a Sarah and she was one of the very worst, Canadian she was, but I'm not holding that against the name in general or this song. Was there a song playing while I've been writing this crud? Ah yes, there it is still chundling along. Bit bland for me, nice production touches but....nah, not for me. [3.0]
14. (I Am A) Horizon - 'I am a horizon' - does that mean you're flat. Uh hur hur hur. I've listened to this album! I'm not totally won over by this artistic jazzy fare! So far we had escaped overly long tracks this week so thanks a fuck Dewi - the sniffy Brian Sewell critic thing to say is this band are 'masters of using silence, of carefully cultivating an ambience among the swells of...' - honestly I find them a bit dull and the vocals are often actually bad, the backing vocals here are a bit 'shrill please stfu' in style eh but the vox aren't as bad as they sometimes are with this lot. Actually scrap that they just became more annoying. [2.5]
15. Kiss Another Day Goodbye - I own this album! I would fuck this album! This wins the week, no contest. Anyone who rates this under a 4 deserves to kiss their sweet ass goodbye, I'm coming for you and your faulty poisoned defective cunt ears. Oh, I said Basho already won...but this is a 5. Sorry Bobby Bash [5.0] |

11.22.19 | 16. Impure brown fecal rain - this youtube clip...well it sounds like it itself is the recording of a youtube clip....that sounds like the recording of a youtube clip....that sounds like the recording of a youtube clip...you get the idea. There's lo fi and then there's just shit I can't hear because the quality sounds like I'm listening to something that's been buried in a grave six feet under and I have my ear to the fucking ground. This is a void entry but whatever [2.5]
17. Tzar Morei - yeah boy, shoe gays are the best gays. This one is really good, not always a big fan of majorly experimental time signature switch ups and the like but this feels natural and the overall sound...yeah, one of the best. Need to check more from the band. [4.0]
18. Lore - I know this album! I really rate this band highly! We have entered a sput list purple patch - very nice to all involved. This is another long one though Pika...if I hadn't already have listened to this you would have incurred my wrath. As it is skim listen - yup still love this one, great. [4.0]
19. Blacklist - I know this album! Only recently got into it! Love it! Proper Boney-core - literate doods in plaid shirts bein earnest with honeyed ol' country boy voices. [4.0]
20. Deep Love - more breathy baby speak Jap vocals but I like this a lot more than the Macaroon thing, it's cute. A bit too cute for any grown man to dig too much maybe (has to be said, don't shoot the messenger) but a GUILTY pleasure [3.5] |
DoofDoof
11.22.19 | 21. One Way Spit - sounds like a cut karaoke scene from Lost in Translation? He sings like a drunk Japanese businessman..."I cawl you up on the phone" I have no idea if he's Japanese. Uhm, a [3.0]
22. When I Get to Heaven - Know the album! Love the album! Not the best song on the album (that's Summer's End) but this is still so great, typical Prine putting a smile on your face with another witty ditty. Don't die John! [4.0]
23. Far from Where Dreams Unfurl - ...nearer to where turds uncurl. What is it with sput loving this Thundercats industrial strength Saturday morning cartoon theme music cheese? I had to listen to this shitty album as it stayed in the sput top 50 for about a month. Fuck you all. This is a fucking abomination. Take a wilde run and jump and don't darken my door again you prog lite cheese pomp cretins. Some good guitar work. [1.5]
24. Ruby Sparks - eek, bit too emo-y pop punk-y and generally chugchuggy n' chipper without a dude with the soul of a poet like the Hold Steady lad to keep you listening to the words. Butt average [2.5] |
DoofDoof
11.22.19 | 25. Sayonara Waltz - think this sort of style I need to understand the words otherwise why don't I listen to some faintly gothic stuff like And Also the Trees? The right scene in a movie maybe this would work...I don't know, I'd have to be really desperate for something different to start listening to overly dramatic quivering Japanese gothic art folk, all the best and with respect, sayanara to I Am Mortal :/ [3.5]
26. Bulletproof - I know this album! I think this album is great! We all know the Whigs, I'm not a total fan boy but as 90s acts go they're safely in the second or third tier down. Solid but not their best tune, or indeed best album [4.0]
27. Essence - yes, drum n bass, but showing the 'light touch' people sometimes forget can be there with the genre. Absolute class, sounds like 90s d n' b but released in 2000 apparently. Need to listen to the album, didn't realise Guy Called Gerald stuff was up on Spotify now.[4.5] |
DoofDoof
11.22.19 | 28. Toulouse the Kisser - I know the album! I reviewed the album! I told Paddy to get to recording a follow up pronto! Everyone knows I love this album and this is one of the very best songs from it - no question a [5.0]
29. On the shores of the Dungeons and Dragons - tech death metal, not a bundle of clown noses as expected, it's a bit.,..overly technical but that's what it's all about I guess. Every instrument is locked in 'furious wank' mode - it's a bit boring, and the vocals are as generic as they come. Sort of impressive, an A for (mostly wasted) effort [3.0]
30. Beds Are Burning - I know the album! I don't hate Midnight Oil! Though it's probably safer/cooler not to like Midnight Oil I'd presume. Sometimes they make me think they were the Aussie version of The Stranglers but that's where I have to say I'm beginning to insult The Stranglers with that association. It's a bit whacky, a bit cheesy but I'm sticking by my guns - I like this song. [4.0] |

Very riffy so far. Not a fan o the vocals at all; they sound stale and musty. The bass is mixed too low and the drums aren't too interesting. Other than the vocals, I don't "strongly" dislike anything, but I don't like anything here either. Also, holy shit, this song still has 9 minutes left? Ugh. Wait, it changed... it's spacey now. And it's picking back up all melodically. This is probably the best part of the song so far. Ever since the pickup, it's been just an okay jam. -.1 for being too long.
2.4/5
"Blacklist"
Pleasant guitar opening so far. Musically, this is a bit overly simple for my taste, but it serves well as background music and his vocal delivery is passionate.
3/5
''Deep Love''
Nice guitar tone. Why does Sputnik have this listed as pop punk? It's like mellow and dreamy. That pickup isn't even punky. It's not bad though. I like the vocals too. Oh, now I kinda see it? I hate pop-punk, so maybe this is the best pop-punk song ever? haha.
3.3/5
''One Way Spit''
The fuck was that intro? Pretty interesting song so far. Ooh, nice saxophone and that weird guitar solo shredding are fun.
3.9/5
When I Get To Heaven"
This has a sleepaway camp sing-along feel to it. "Syphilitic parasitics is my new favorite phrase. Ooh, and they added a nice jaunty piano. See, now this is the kind of stuff I like. Not sure I'd want an entire album of this though, so I hope he mixes it up. -.1 for pausing a bit too much between singing.
4.2/5
''Far From Where Dreams Unfurl''
Prog metal? Meh. Man, this is more boring than the "Lore" one. So much is going on, but I'm not interested in any of it. Even the strings are boring, which is crazy cuz usually I'm a sucker for strings even in songs I don't like. Oh god now there's drum slamming. Nope, I hate this, sorry. Also, this guitar solo sounds like it belongs in Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, which makes me weirdly nostalgic.

11.25.19 | 13. Sarah - Memoryhouse: Now entering: budgiecore universe! Ooh this is bright! and nice! I like this! It's more upbeat than I was expecting. I like the introduction of the bridge ("Run away, run run...") a lot. Need to check this album. 3.8
14. (I Am a) Horizon - Fire! Orchestra: Good opener to a very strong album, love how this is paced but it feels a little strange jamming it on its own. Those voices and keys carry this thing all the way though. 4
15. Kiss Another Day Goodbye - David Kauffman & Eric Caboor: It took me around three minutes to decide this song was boring but *then* it suddenly grew on me a load. Hmm. I enjoy this as a mood but I find it hard to analyse beyond that, which I'm going to read as a sign that it's not fully grabbing me. 3.5
16. Rain Upon the Impure - The Ruins of Beverast: Arche you bellend, this had better be good. Ok the good news is I dug the half time (??) bit that started at about 8:10. The bad news is after youtube changed song by another piece by the same band it took me a solid minute to realise this had happened. I would relisten to make up for being a lazy listener but also NO this can have a benefit of the doubt 3

11.25.19 | 17. Tzar Morei - Kairon; IRSE!: Okay, this bangs and I am downloading this album right now. This is like Mass of the Fermenting Dregs meets Cult of Luna if they were a pop punk band which is kinda a dumb thought but also the dynamics and noise here are the best kind of dumb fun so I guess that figures. Only gripe is that the second half wasn't quite as kinetic as the first. Why didn't you rec me this on my 2010s catchup list Neek how fucking dare you 4.3 |

11.26.19 | I mean, my main point is: I hate pop punk, but "Deep Love" barely registers as pop punk to me, and is actually good, so it's probably one of the best, if not the best, pop punk song I've ever heard. Solid 3.3/5 song.

11.26.19 | ''Ruby Sparks''
Oh no, actual pop punk. This is so lame. 2002 called and they want their sound back.
2.4/5
''Sayonara Waltz''
This is nice, though it doesn't really make any real impression on me. The dischorant ending is neat actually +.1 for that.
3.4/5
''Bulletproof''
That organ's fairly pronounced. This reminds me of grunge minus the vocals honestly. The guitar riff is good and it's soooo 90s. This sounds like it belongs in a movie where the lead is sad that a girl left him or something. The vocals completely get in the way though of it being anywhere near amazing.

11.26.19 | FIELDS OF FUCKING MILDEW. Mildew? Mildew?! Who gives a flying fuck about mildew? We all know someone who smells faintly of mildew and it makes us all want to send said individual to an early grave. Have some self respect mildew man. I hate mildew. We all hate mildew. This band named themselves after fucking mildew. Not just that - they named themselves after a shit tonne of mildew, fields of it. They also had the gumption to then be an incredibly boring band on top of that brutal insult. |

11.26.19 | One Way Spit - i mean, for context this is from 1975, which i think matters. Like if this was released in 2019 I don't think it would be treated this same by fans of this band (assuming people listen to this). Yeah it's punk i guess and probably ahead of its time, but is it good.. not really. 2.5 /5
When I Get To Heaven - I get it, I really do, but I've also recorded myself rambling into a microphone. 2 /5
Far from Where Dreams Unfurl - lol, okay. I've seen this cover before and never for one second imagined this would by some sort of symphonic folk metal album. ugh, i kinda hate this, but the musicianship is very competen.... wtf just happened around the 2 minute mark? literally rewind. let's listen again, killer guitar solo, then the mixing engineer falls asleep on the console. I'd like to find someone in this thread that doesn't find this to be utterly jarring and bizarre. oh okay fade back in the guitars and drums, gonna press the stop button now, but nice effort i guess? it's like a 4.5/5 musicianship but a final 2/5 chance i'll ever actively listen to it again.
Cubfires - weedle deedle intro, hmm okay vox, classic pop punk with a weirdly indie vibe to the recording. If this was reamped and remixed, it would sound more in the genre they are playing. I kinda dig it though, 3/5 seems fair
Sayonara Waltz - love that guitar, like a lot, but ugh shakey japanese vox, no thanks. Some languages just catch my ear when sung, Japanese is one of them. I love Art of Life.. Dessah woze...so i'll try to look past it here. Yeah this is good. A bit theatrical but it works 3/5
P.S "it contrasts the noise from the previous songs in a beautiful way" but like when you're recommending one song to check out you realize why context doesn't really apply. |

11.26.19 | Bulletproof - I've heard OF the Afghan Whigs, but never check em out. What I love most about these Songs of the Day is I get to finally check out a ton of stuff that I never really knew where to start. Black Love, eh? okie dokey. Passable rock music i guess, 3/5? I don't know |

"When I Get To Heaven" - "Yeah, I'm gonna smoke a cigarette that's nine miles long" Nice. This was a very fun song! 4.0
''Far From Where Dreams Unfurl.'' - This strated like an Alestorm song, which is very nice. But the vocals are a huuuuuuge minus... almost killed the whole song to me. Otherwise I enjoyed it a lot! 3.7
''Ruby Sparks'' - Well, pretty boring. 2.5
''Sayonara Waltz'' - The first half was extremly meh, the other half was good. But the progression was terribly slow... 2.7

11.29.19 | Quo Vadis - 2.3 - I have a hard time taking dirty vocals seriously. The way many of you feel about emo vocals, that's how I feel about dirty vocals. (I always picture them being sung by J.R.R. Tolkien's Orcs.) |

11.29.19 | Rocky Mountain Raga: Woohohohohohoo that's a lot of vibrato! Horace Andy can learn someting from this dude. The music is nice in the first half, but the second half is too noodly for me. Vibe is good though. 3.0
Sarah: Throwback atmosphere, very 80s. My problem with Memoryhouse is the vocalist. She always sounds like she is totally and utterly bored. So monotonous and without any trace of emotion. To me at least. Sorry budgie. 2.5
(I Am A) Horizon: Long intro, but that violin sounds good. Not something I'm going to jam a lot. Liked where it went about halfway, vox are cool (until they go on for too long...) and a nice trip-hoppy vibe. Don't like the free jazz elements all that much, which is a pity. At least it's an interesting experience! 2.8
Kiss Another Day Goodbye: Relaxed sunday afternoon jam. Like it all, will check the record. 3.8
Rain Upon The Impure: Dark! Love the muddiness. Also very weird how there's symphonic and choir elements here. Varied enough to hold my interest throughout its duration. 3.3
Tzar Morei: LOVE the production here, and the gazyness of the guitars. Vox rule too. Nice one, definitely going to check this record. Diverse, and that bass is deliciously audible too. The jam at the end rules. Love it. 4.2
Lore: Recently found out about those guys, love their approach to this style. Definitely on my list for bands to check out! 3.8

11.30.19 | Alright, I need to participate more in these threads. Life has been absolutely kicking my ass though.
13. Sarah - Memoryhouse - I’ve always adored this album cover. The song itself is fine, I can’t say it’s a very unique or captivating song whatsoever, as there are just an overwhelming amount of bands that have adopted this sound. But I enjoy the song well enough 3
14. (I Am A) Horizon - Fire! Orchestra - Aye, I’ve been meaning to listen to this all year long. I was really not expecting any vocals whatsoever, this is a very nice surprise. About halfway through, and god this song is just so cool, I love everything about it so far. What an absolute treat. 4.2
15. Kiss Another Day Goodbye - David Kauffman and Eric Caboor - I’m getting some major “Nebraska” vibes for this, so I love it already. This is just a beautiful track, I love this. 4
16. Rain Upon the Impure - The Ruines of Beverast - Aw fuck this is 15 minutes. That is some hollow ass black metal production if I ever heard it. I hate the drums on this a lot. I kinda like the vocals though. Good lord this is long. I can only really say that the section nearing 11 minutes until the end is what saves this from being a thoroughly unpleasant experience--that part of the song is actually excellent. I don’t know if I’d ever return to this even on a black metal kick. 2.8
17. Tzar Morei - Kairon IRSE! - 10 minute song fuck me upppp. I already like this one more though. I’m a sucker for post-rock, and I am a sucker for these start-stop riffs. Oh I am loving this part halfway through. 3.5
18. Lore - Elder - Fuck me, 16 minutes. Starting this as 3am wasn't bright. This was cool, I enjoy stoner rock, so I dug the tone of the song overall. 3.3
19. Blacklist - John Moreland - This kinda reminds me of springsteen or chuck ragan a bit. SO I really enjoy this. Never pegged myself too much a country guy, but I guess I have myself a soft spot 3.8
20. Deep Love - Split End - I zoned out during this. Uh I liked it though! 3.6
I think I will call it for right now.

''Toulouse The Kisser''
Damn, this makes me think of an 80s rock dance track. Like something by Pat Benatar or something. Like "We Belong" or something, but with a male lead. Meh.
2.6/5
''On The Shores Of Ithaka''
Shredding and roaring, oh boy. I don't think I'll ever understand extreme metal. Then again, Ministry's Psalm 69 and Mind Is a Terrible Thing to Taste have some harsher vocals and I like that, but I don't know, it's just more enjoyable there? Maybe I just think the industrial elements make it better. Hmmmm this isn't industrial at all though, just death metal or whatever. +.1 for guitar shredding talent.
2.1/5
''Beds Are Burning''
Nice deep bass part. The vocals are kinda meh though. Wait, that chorus! I know this one. This is total 80s cheese and maybe not in a good way. 1987? This sounds like it could've been from 1977 honestly. That bass is kinda boring actually, like is it going to play the same 4 notes all song? The meaning is nice though. White Australians feeling like they need to give back to the aboriginal people who live in poverty. +.2 for having a great meaning.
