But yeah rec song of the decade!
Any one welcome to rec or join in rating, discussing and roasting each other. |

01.01.20 | “Ginger and Ruth” by Jerry Paper from Toon Time Raw!
It paints a vivid picture in my head
https://youtu.be/cXoQTW23gZU
|
Trifolium
01.01.20 | Oh that's a nice idea! Very hard to pick just one though, I'll think about it for a little while. |
Morningrise767
01.01.20 | too hard to pick just one xD
awesome idea though mate! |
Trifolium
01.01.20 | I'm going for this one:
Agnes Obel - Familiar (from Citizen Of Glass)
https://youtu.be/32kYH6XZrIo
Probably not specifically my fave of the decade, but it's up there. Love its weirdness, adore her as an artist and the hype for her new record is real. |
garas
01.01.20 | Oh boy, this is a very hard theme to pick a song to! |
SlothcoreSam
01.01.20 | Get your thinking caps on boys!!
You could pick a song one of two ways, either
a) the first song that pops into your head when you think back at the last decade, or
b) go through or your year end playlists for the past 10 years, and find your fav. |
garas
01.01.20 | Alright, I think I have one. I'm not 100% if it is really the very best song of the previous decade, but it was extremly hard to choose one...
The song is: "The Second Baptism... Shores in Fire and Ice" by Evilfeast
https://youtu.be/msDebYHSYsc
I still got the goosebumps when I listen to this one. The perfect mixture of my two most beloved genres: black metal and dungeon synth, just in one song. Sorry for the length (12 mins), but who appreciates this type of music will still find it way too short, hahaha! I'm amazed by the fact this is a one-man band... incredible! |
SlothcoreSam
01.01.20 | 4 down, 27 to go.
Will update database when I have time |
garas
01.01.20 | "The 26" - I sense some similarity to the "darker" blink-182 songs, but I might be wrong. Not bad. Bonus points for the great mixing and production. 3.3 Please don't hate Sam, I'm just not really into punk. |
SlothcoreSam
01.01.20 | Lol, it's OK.
I gotta keep it true to my taste, and might convert some of you one day! |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.01.20 | I'm going to do this one properly, I promise! Already covered this as part of the contribs SOTD feature, but my pick is Seiko Oomori - Saishuu Koen (from Mahou ga Tsukaenainara, Shinitai). V powerful teary mess of a song, absolute statement track on how to get an amazing performance out of an imperfect voice and stellar lyrics to boot

01.01.20 | Hey Johnny happy 2020! 📯
Was thinking about people who have already made decade song lists, when i came up with the theme.
This will force us to listen to those songs, and if we are short, i can borrow from the user's lists that already exist. |
Uzumaki
01.01.20 | Let’s go with:
††† (Crosses) - Bitches Brew
Even though I can’t even begin to choose a favorite song of the decade for myself, I feel like this song, and really this album, to be representative of my shifting preferences through the decade, in that while I maintained an affinity for rock/metal/heavier music, I still made more than enough time to satiate my growing interests in electronic/ambient/alternative music. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.01.20 | Already used 2 of my top songs of the decade in previous installments so by process of elimination I guess I'll go with Paradise Circus by Massive Attack |
DoofDoof
01.01.20 | 'Chinatown' by Destroyer
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zmeu3aiVeb8
...I'll try and listen to and rate this month's picks too, was too busy December :( |
Aerisavion
01.01.20 | Familiar is excellent.
As is Bitches Brew. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
01.01.20 | Hopefully sloth wont ruin this months like budgie did in December |
Minushuman24
01.02.20 | My song of the decade I already had for song of the day. How simple by Hop Along. so I might need a minute to think on this one. |
Trifolium
01.02.20 | "Familiar is excellent"
It so is ❤️ |
SlothcoreSam
01.02.20 | 8 songs up, 21 to go. 🎰 |

01.02.20 | Spreadsheet should be updated. Let me know if I fucked it up. |
Minushuman24
01.02.20 | After much thought about what I'd consider the best of the decade, I think I figured it out. It may not be my favorite, but I truly think it is an absolute masterpiece.
Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst - Kendrick Lamar (2012)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3CnfFQENkw
I recently burned through 50 important albums of the decade that I had not rated, 5 per year, and this album stood out as the best among all of them. It was even better than I remembered it being, though this song was always my favorite.
It is sublime. |
Divaman
01.02.20 | Ooo, nice theme. My pick is Antigone Rising - "My Town" from the Whiskey & Wine Vol. 2 EP.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-aCR06clh4
I told you last month that I considered the Nightwish track I rec'd to be the most exciting piece of music from the last decade, and I do. This song is my Song of the Decade for the 2010s, though, based on its simple beauty. I do like music about how life sucks. But this song is about how it doesn't when people get it right. |
Scheumke
01.02.20 | Wow that is so difficult and exciting a theme. I'll think about it a little more before submitting. |
Divaman
01.02.20 | I'm trying to give each of these more than one listen, but it's hard to get inside of someone else's frame of reference to hear what makes them connect with a song enough to name it song of the decade. Having said that:
Apologies, I Have None - 3.0 - Not bad. I like the anger.
Jerry Paper - 2.8 - Kind of slow and kitschy. |
SlothcoreSam
01.02.20 | Sweet choices. I'll update at lunch.
@Diva, yeah, it's got one of the angriest non pc lyrics in a pop punk song.
"she told me that she fucked him and I thought
I can't believe this, did she not know that I loved her?
I'm going to smash this bitches face in
find the cunt and stab the fucker
Someone's going to die for this tonight"
But then he redeems himself,
"But you know that it's not right to punish her when you couldn't
ever say that you never did play your part
you never did shit that you shouldn't
that you never did things that you said that you wouldn't
you never said shit that you wish that you hadn't now"
Then the final chorus kicks in, and we are back to musical bliss. So good. |
Uzumaki
01.02.20 | @minushuman24, nice choice, I almost went with “Swimming Pools (drink)” for my pick. Kendrick is prolly the only rapper I go out of my way to listen to his material. |
SlothcoreSam
01.02.20 | 2. Ginger and Ruth. 3.5, imagining listening to this at a high class whisky joint. Gonna check the album. |
Scheumke
01.03.20 | Alright I made my choice, but damn was it difficult. In the end I chose the one I had the most emotional connection to, instead of choosing something with more technical or songwriting prowess:
The Dear Hunter - A Beginning https://youtu.be/Bwviv89OJPc
It's completely out of context which might make it more difficult to appreciate on its own. It's the culmination of a five album story in which the protagonist dies in this song (we think, it's left kinda vague). It uses a myriad of themes from the different albums bringing the story to a very nice full-circle-esque close. That final piano melody ties so much of the story together it never fails to take my breath away. |
SlothcoreSam
01.03.20 | Nice choice Scheumke.
By the way, how do you pronounce your username? |
Divaman
01.04.20 | Agnes Obel - 3.7 - This one is compelling. I can definitely see it growing on me. Wasn't familiar with her before, but I'll definitely check out more of her stuff.
Evilfeast - 2.8 - Not my thing, but not bad. You guys know how I feel about the dirty vocals, but there are some worthwhile things here. |
SlothcoreSam
01.04.20 | 3. Familiar. 3.4. This is nice, great vocals, and vocal effects. Pretty minimalist, but still hooks you in. Might grow on further listens. Again I will check the full album. |
garas
01.04.20 | "Ginger & Ruth" - Lovely. "It paints a vivid picture in my head" [2] It sounds like a song taken from a cartoon or something. Best Ars rec :] (I didn't pay any attention to the lyrics though.) 3.8
"Familiar" - This went in one ear and out the other, nothing really grabbed me in this one. (Sorry Trifo :|) 2.5 |
garas
01.04.20 | That 2.8 really pleases me on my rec, Diva! :] |
ArsMoriendi
01.04.20 | "The 26"
Band name makes me think this is gonna be whiny as fuck. Wow, it is. I don't like this. When he English whine-screams "STAB THE FUCKER" I kinda checked out. I don't like how the bass was mixed well for only like 2 seconds, it seemed like it could've been mixed that way for the whole song.
1.9/5
"Familiar"
Pretty so far! Simple instrumentation so far... ooh cello! I like the weird vocal effects actually, it works well. I wanted way more from this than what I got, but I still like d it.
3.7/5
"The Second Baptism... Shores in Fire and Ice"
Epic opening, sure. Moody, slow piano, right. Now it's just thrashy extreme metal with scary black metal growling. How could I give this a positive score? It's so long and boring and metally.
2.3/5 |
Trifolium
01.04.20 | Oh guys you make me very haaaappppppy with all the Agnes Obel love going on here! Her discog is totally worth checking out, lovely records and a new one coming in February.
Pity you didn't like it garas, but that happens! |
SlothcoreSam
01.05.20 | Still need some songs!
Theme is song of the decade!
Anyone can rec a song. |
Divaman
01.05.20 | Thanks garas. You and I often have different taste, but there's at least a little overlap. |
Divaman
01.05.20 | Seiko Oomori - 3.6 - I don't what she's singing, but this bitch is serious. |
SlothcoreSam
01.05.20 | 4. Evilfeast- The Second baptism.... 3.8. This was good stuff. Liked the slow build up, then the intensity of the drumming, but it still feels blissful. Will check full album. |
ArsMoriendi
01.05.20 | "Saishuu Koen"
Pleasant guitar so far. I like that rattling sound, it weirdly fits. Wow her voice is far more aggressive than I was expecting with the music being so placid. Not bad!
3.5/5 |
Scheumke
01.06.20 | "By the way, how do you pronounce your username?"
Good question and quite a difficult one because it uses sounds not used in the English language but I'll try to explain.
The 'SCH' is pronounced like 'SG', like in 'Scheveningen' (look it up for the correct pronouncement), not like the English pronouncement of 'School'.
The 'EU' gets a little more interesting, because the way I pronounce it is actually in a southern Dutch dialect called 'Brabants'. In typical Dutch its a sound that doesn't exist in the English language, but I pronounce it as a 'u' as in 'hut' or 'hurry'.
The 'MK' is pronounced as normal
The final 'E' is pronounced the same as the 'EU', so as a 'u' in 'hut', so not as Scheumkie/Scheumkee. Normally this wouldn't be pronounced the same, but since my 'EU' is in dialect it actually becomes the same. |
Uzumaki
01.06.20 | So, like "Sgumkuh"? |
dedex
01.06.20 | srumkuh |
Scheumke
01.06.20 | Yeah I guess that'd be the phonetic way. The accent is on the Sgum though, note that it's not Sgum-kuh, it stays one short word. the 'ke' is softer in tone and almost as an afterthought. |
Divaman
01.06.20 | I was thinking it was more like Shum-kee. |
Divaman
01.06.20 | Crosses - 3.4 - Pretty cool. Kind of slow and ominous. |
Scheumke
01.06.20 | That would be the English way to pronounce it yes. I think most people would pronounce it that way. I don't really mind how people pronounce it though, but if you ask than that's the way it's supposed to.
It comes from the dutch word 'schuimpje', which is a dutch sweet, kinda like meringue. In our dialect (and in our group of friends) it became a scheumke, which we also used to call each other after a particularly dumb or silly act. I guess I was the one making the most of those so it kinda became my nickname haha.
|
Trifolium
01.06.20 | Haha, I was already wondering if I had the right idea about where it came from! Nice one, schuimpjes are delish. |
Divaman
01.06.20 | I reached out to a few old friends earlier to try to get some more recs. Will reach out to some more later today or tomorrow. |
SlothcoreSam
01.06.20 | Thanks Diva. I will draw from decade lists as well if needed.
@Scheumke, you will be forever my Dutch Sweet!😉 That's so awesome, thanks for the lesson in linguistics and phonetics.
Anyways, will update later. I'm fucking sick with gastroenteritis after a family dinner. 4 people contracted it so far. |

garas
01.06.20 | "Saishuu Koen" - (Why does the girl hurt her eyes on the cover?) Well, after a promising start it went to a big nope... sorry Johnny, this one didn't resonate with me. The instrumentation is nice, but ah... I hated the "histerical" vocals. A lot. 2.0 (Please don't hate!) |
garas
01.06.20 | "Bitches Brew" - Not even close what I expected (nothing personal or something, Uzumaki!). I dig this style more than I thought and this song is catchy af. I especially liked the cool synths, and the distorted bass, and not to forget to mention that: the vocals sound perfect in this song. A solid 3.6 (Oh, and my gf says thanks because she loved it!) |
Divaman
01.07.20 | Massive Attack - 3.3 - I like the vocalist, and the sound. It's a little repetitive, but otherwise pretty good. |
Divaman
01.07.20 | TVC15 left me a message in my shoutbox. His pick for song of the decade is TR/ST's "Bicep" from their album The Destroyer - 2. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jj17eaTaemY
"My choice for top song of the 2010s will have to go to Bicep by TR/ST" |

01.07.20 | Was contemplating going with Devil in His Youth as my pick, nice Anatelier. |
Divaman
01.07.20 | OK, we've got some more picks here today. (Thanks guys!) And I just reached out to a few more old friends, so let's see how far into January that takes us. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.07.20 | 1. Apologies, I Have None - The 26: Earnest shit. It's not going that much more for me than most pop punk, but those lyrics give it an edge. I like the way their singer catches himself after losing his shit midway. 3.4
2. Jerry Paper - Ginger and Ruth: Short and sweet psych pop, nice! I vibed to this; stuff like this tends to be fun in the moment but doesn't stick with me that long, will be curious to see if it's still on my mind in a couple of days 3.7
3. Agnes Obel - Familiar: Why didn't I check this earlier? Hmm, what is this - baroque pop? Lovely arrangement and production, this kinda makes me think of what Have You In My Wilderness might have been if it wasn't frigid as hell. Should probs get on the album 3.8
4. Evilfeast - The Second Baptism... Shores in Fire and Ice: This was much better than I expected (no offence garas ;]). The first three minutes are the kind of thing that would usually make me think of the word 'epic' in prominent quotation marks, but it kinda works here. As for the rest...I can't remember the last time a bm song held my interest for 12 minutes. 3.7
6. Crosses - Bitches Brew: I don't love these vocals or this production (feels a little cookie cutter 'alternative' to me), but the writing's on point. The chorus really kicks off, though I wasn't as gripped after the first iteration. Also, where the fuck did those last 10 seconds come from? 3.2
7. Massive Attack - Paradise Circus: Pots picks a track and it isn't Old Dreams Waiting To Be Realised? 0/10, huge bait opportunity missed. Was half hoping this would be from Tomorrow In A Day to prod me into finally checking it, but weirdly Heligoland has been the only Massive Attack off my radar for quite a while. What are the odds. This sound seems like a step up from 100th Window, but they've done better imo (the Hope Sandoval track they've done since comes to mind). Plus 0.2 points for that outro 3.6
8. Destroyer - Chinatown: Yessssss this album. Would have gone for Kara Walker, Bay of Pigs or maybe Blue Eyes but this song is exquisite and I love it a lot 4.5 |
Trifolium
01.07.20 | ''Hmm, what is this - baroque pop?''
IT'S PERFECT.
''Should probs get on the album''
YES! |
anat
01.07.20 | The 26 - 2.6 (heh)
Ginger and Ruth - 3.2
Familiar - 4.0
The Second Baptism - 2.0
Saishuu Koen - 3.6
Bitches Brew - 1.6
Paradise Circus - 3.8 |
SlothcoreSam
01.07.20 | and we are updated. Half of the month complete. |
SlothcoreSam
01.07.20 | 5. Saishuu Koen. 4.2 Pretty raw recording, her voice with the acoustic guitar at the start was top class busker. Then the band kicks in, and yeah I can fuck with this, gonna check some albums. |
SlothcoreSam
01.07.20 | 6. Bitches Brew. 3.8 Are ✝✝✝ ever gonna put out another album, or was this a 1 and done project. I loved the album when it came out, taking me a little to get back into this track, there are others i liked better off the album, but this is still a good one. "Option" was top 10 songs of the year for 2014 for me. |

01.08.20 | Thanks Aberf, added, and feel free to listen, rate and discuss the others track listed. |
Uzumaki
01.08.20 | Apologies, I Have None - 3.1
not a bad track, I liked the bounce and flow of the track, also the tone and productions style feels raw, which lends to the immediacy of the lyrics. Not bad at all.
Jerry Paper - 2.5
I honestly really didn’t care for this one too much; I appreciated the throwback, psychedelic style they had going, but that’s pretty much it. This style is kinda hit or miss for me.
Agnes Obel - 4.8
Oh my, this is beautiful. So melancholic in its tone and sense of restraint, I loved how it complemented the lyrics. If this is an indicator of her brand of music, even if there’s light variation, I may have to check her body of work out ASAP. |
Divaman
01.08.20 | Destroyer - 3.4 - Pretty chill. Not sure I like all the little bits of distortion or the jazz brass, but otherwise it's a decent track. |
Scheumke
01.08.20 | @Lucman: Nice one! Matt Smith did the mixing/mastering of our debut record. Very cool and nice guy. |
Trifolium
01.08.20 | Yesssss Uzumaki! And it is, her first two are less electronic and more quiet but totally gorgeous, Citizen of Glass is very much like this track. The new one is shaping up to be close to this in sound too, two singles have been released so far. |
Scheumke
01.08.20 | The 26 – There are parts here that I really connected with (especially the aggressive mid-section through the redemption part right afterward) and the outro was cool. Other parts, mostly in the first half, do very little to me though. I’m not a big fan of slightly off-key, almost spoken word lyrics, but that’s just preference, because I can completely understand that a story this personal just works best that way. 3.2
Ginger and Ruth – Started out a little weird, as in I had no idea what to expect going further, but then that chorus comes in and it’s all flowers and happy days out in nature. Yeah it does paint a vivid picture and I think it might even be one where it’ll paint a different picture for different people. It’s nice and brief but even with all that, it doesn’t really stick with me. 3.4
Familiar – Yeah this is my kinda song. Mixing is really up close and a little intense but it doesn’t go overboard with the strings, a restraint which really works to its benefit. The female/male duality also works really well. 4.0
The Second Baptism… Shores in Fire and Ice – Atmosphere, atmosphere, atmosphere. I completely get why you love it garas. There’s enough interesting hooks in here for me to keep my attention. Maybe I need to listen to this stuff more. The synths give it a real 90’s black-metal vibe and the production is better than a lot of records from that era. Quite impressive that this is a one-man-band. 3.9
|
Scheumke
01.08.20 | Saishuu Koen – Johnny you got me into this chick, but why do you always recommend songs from this album, the only one not on Spotify. Drives me mad haha. That said, there’s a couple of things with this song I’m a little ambivalent about. Like some guitar notes not coming out just right, or the vocals almost distorting because she is singing too loud too close the mic. Dunno if sloppy or genius, might be both. It’s pure though, I’ll give you that. Sorry to say though, in the end this song does little to me. 3.0
Bitches Brew – Wow this is really different, and quite interesting. Pretty catchy tune, both the verses and the chorus really stick with me. The guy has a great voice which is a big plus for me. I love how he shows quite a couple of different facets of his voice in this song alone. I don’t yet know if this is something really special to me or just a novelty done right. Really enjoyed the song though. 3.8
Paradise Circus – I need to listen to Massive Attack more. It’s something I say to myself every time I listen to these guys. Hadn’t heard this one before but it got me in a trance like they usually do. Really well constructed song. This is how you do ‘less is more’ right. Owh god yes that ending is fantastic, building on it more and more to a real climax. I didn’t expect that. 4.3
Chinatown – That intro triggers a feeling of nostalgia for me, don’t ask me why. Though the lyrical content might be quite heavy (even after reading the lyrics I can’t quite decide if it’s meant heavy or more carefree) the song itself is quite upbeat and gets me in a good mood. I like it, might listen more to this guy. 3.7
And there we are, all caught up.

01.08.20 | Man but I think I've rec'd so much of my top songs already ): |
garas
01.08.20 | "Paradise Circus" - So, it is basically pop music with interesting rhythm patterns? I think it is too moody for me, but wasn't any bad. 2.6
"Chinatown" - How could they get away with this band name... Nostalgic stuff, like a remastered version of a song from an old movie. I'm kinda indifferent about this one, I can imagine as a background music - but that's all. 2.6 |
garas
01.08.20 | Also, I'm very-very happy about your thoughts on Evilfeast, guys! See, BM isn't so bad, hahaha! :] |

That's right nerds, I'm back to bitch about everything. Blame Divaman.
So I already rec'd all my non-metal songs of the 10s in previous lists. Now it's just what to choose from something that everyone will shrug at because my jams always need +10 plays to make sense, y knooooow.

JohnnyoftheWell
01.08.20 | Haha my bad Scheumke; I'd have a million and one recommendations from her pop stuff on Spotify, don't get me wrong ;] |
Egarran
01.08.20 | Apologies, I Have None - Oh dear. Well at least it sounds like they had fun with this. 2.5/5
Ginger & Ruth - Weird. I get Beatles and Tull vibes, but like the previous entry I don't dig these vocals at all. I mean, we agree this guy is borderline singing false, right? 2.5/5
Familiar - Yeah you know my feelings on this. Best Danish song of the decade at least. 4.7/5
The Second Baptism - Ooh is this gonna be 12 minutes of dungeon synth? Be still, my beating heart. Ah the song begins after 4 minutes. Saw this album on some decade lists, and I tried, but it doesn't do much for me. Biggest complaint is that dukka dukka drum beat - give me the fucking blasts! 2.5/5
Saishuu Koen - Urgh. More weird vox. Well at least we know now that Johnny's real name is Donovan Littler. 2/5 |
Divaman
01.09.20 | Kendrick Lamar - 2.7 - First time I've ever listened to Kendrick Lamar. I like the background music, and I don't hate his rapping, but it doesn't really do anything for me either. But at least he's not screaming. Way overlong, though. |
Dewinged
01.09.20 | Diva told me you guys were running out of recs so how about:

01.09.20 | when i think of my best musical experiences it's usually whole albums and not individual songs so i'm really struggling to come up with a rec, however, what i can think of right now:

https://youtu.be/6m-zhD8Qh9w
(IT'S A LONG SONG SORRY) Alt-rock, (kinda) prog rock. >:]
(Hope this helps somewhat with the lack of recs, I haven't been active recently due to the political (and literal!) climate so I don't think I'll have time to check all of these, but I see a lot of interesting stuff !) |
Egarran
01.09.20 | >I haven't been active recently due to the political (and literal!) climate
Ooh tell us more please. Is the rebellion starting? |

01.09.20 | Asdfp rec is a 10/10 nice, hope you're keeping safe and not too toasty dude :/:/ |

01.09.20 | Omg yeah Asdfp, that's a wonderful rec. And all the best to you of course! |

01.09.20 | 20 songs now.
I'll update the scores later.
Anyone on Sput can rec their song of the decade, for us to listen too, rate and critique.
Just let us know the song, artist, album, a quick blurb why it's your fav, and a Youtube, or other link so we can hear it. |

01.09.20 | Here's # 21. ian b sent this to my shoutbox:
ian b "sounds good! definitely hard to pick just one, but without thinking too hard it'd probably be "King Park" by La Dispute. such an impeccable song conceptually and lyrically, with a bone-chilling climax that's just as effective the 100th time as it is the first." |
SlothcoreSam
01.09.20 | Nice choice by Ian b, love that track.
Thanks Diva, will update soon. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.09.20 | KING PARK!
I'm not in favour of content notes for music, but if I were that'd be one the first songs I stamped one on lol |
Divaman
01.09.20 | Never heard it, but you're whetting my appetite Johnny. |
Divaman
01.09.20 | Here's another rec in my shoutbox from our friend wham49. Being a man of few words, he says simply:
wham49 "Black Sabbath/13/Zeitgeist"
So that's 22 songs for the month.

01.10.20 | Was told to check in here for the month!
"Never Dead" - Trophy Scars
No song is so consistently creative while also making me as overall emotional as this masterpiece by Trophy Scars.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oANlYwpqrnE |
SlothcoreSam
01.10.20 | Yay DM is here, and an awesome pick too.
|
ArsMoriendi
01.10.20 | "Bitches Brew"
Wait, this isn't Miles Davis! I wasn't expecting this to get heavier, odd and unexpected. This reminds me of Muse, but it's better actually. I think 17-year-old me would've loved this, but I don't really seek music like this anymore.
3.6/5
"Paradise Circus"
Good percussion. This is kinda cheating since I already like the 3 Massive Attack albums I've heard. Also, that's Hope Sandoval on this? I love Mazzy Star. Okay, this is double cheating. Good bass, good strings, good vibe, good everything.
5/5 |
ArsMoriendi
01.10.20 | "Chinatown"
I don't like the vocals at all. They feel very limp. The guitar, strings, and synths all sound nice together though. Unexpected female vocals improve this song tenfold. And the sax is cool too. It's very modern. It's kinda like "modern easy listening." I bet my Dad would like this. He tends to like really limp radio-friendly acoustic indie stuff. I caught him listening to Mumford and Sons once and he likes The Lumineeers. Overall, this was fine enough.
3/5
"Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst"
Nice loungy jazz vibe. Hip hop is a weird spot for me. The way his voice fades out 4 minutes in is really unique though. The singing is choppy and nasal, but that seems intentional and it works, so I don't mind it. OH he changed it up, the percussion in the 2nd half is cool and the female backups are cool too. It feels like it went from intense to chill. Man, I can appreciate plenty of things about it, but 12 mins of a genre I'm not super used to is still kinda exhausting. +.1 for meaningful lyrics.
3.4/5
"My Town"
Harmless country music. The kind that makes people look dumb when they say "all country sucks," but also the kind that gives me no impression.
2.8/5 |
anat
01.10.20 | Chinatown - 4.0
Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst - 2.7
My Town - 1.4 |
Papa Universe
01.10.20 | well all my favs have already previously been rec'd, King Gizzard, Damien Jurado, Protomartyr. |
Papa Universe
01.10.20 | but you didn't rec the one true Protomartyr song, so here goes my chaotic, old-guy complaints rambling scatter-thought pick:
Protomartyr - A Private Understanding

Divaman
01.11.20 | The Dear Hunter - 3.3 - I feel like I'm the only one here who gets you, at least a little, Scheumke. I like the drama of this piece. |
SlothcoreSam
01.11.20 | Updated.
Now to listen to some of them. |
SlothcoreSam
01.11.20 | 7. Paradise City. 3.9. Great song, that fits well on the album, doesn't really stand out as a classic by itself.
8. Chinarown. 3.8 I haven't heard this in a while, still great.
9. Sing about me, I'm dying of thirst. 3.8. Great flow throughout, with nice beats and instrumentation. |
SlothcoreSam
01.11.20 | 10. My town. 2.0. Not really doing anything for me.
11. A Beginning. 3.5 This is nice, but context is key, I've heard bits and pieces of the 5 albums, but never enough to appreciate the references in this song.
12. Bicep. 2.8 Mine are bulging after hearing this. It's like 80s synth with unique vocals.don't know about this one. |
Scheumke
01.12.20 | Is that so Diva? I never feel misunderstood here haha. I just have my own special taste is all haha. Glad you guys enjoyed it. Do give the albums a chance if you liked it though, stuff's phenomenal. |

Rec your song of the decade! 2010s |
garas
01.12.20 | "Sing About Me, I'm Dying of Thirst" - The base beat is okay, the chorus sounds kinda orinasal which funny, otherwise: nope. Way too long...
"My Town" - My dad would love this. And I kinda liked this as well! This very chill, and pretty. Oh, and the mixing is superb. 3.5
"A Beginning" - Nice cinematical sound, but I didn't really like the vocals. 3.0
"Bicep" - Not my thing at all, kinda retro I guess? 2.3 |

01.13.20 | Hmmm. |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.13.20 | neek please, you just posted a list with multiple great songs on |
ArsMoriendi
01.14.20 | "A Beginning"
Slow piano and whiny emotional vocals, okay. Pretty flutes though. The piano intro is nice and the rain. This is "good," but also not my thing at all.
3.2/5
"Bicep"
This sounds like 80s EBM, not to be confused with EDM, which is real. ELECTRIC BODY MUSICCCCCCCCCCC. This is boring, but not awful.
2.5/5
"Jolly Fucker"
This is so English that it makes me think of an annoying American doing a bad English accent. No.
2/5 |

01.14.20 | A Beginning - 1.5

Bicep - 3.0
Jolly Fucker - 4.2
Dazzling Dreams - 3.5

JohnnyoftheWell
01.14.20 | songs will be rated, shade will be thrown!
9. Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst - Heard this album before, good stuff though not so much my jam. This wasn't a standout last time, but it holds up decently. Prefer the latter half by a considerable margin 3.5
10. My Town - Agree with Ars' take on this entirely. Wholesome, competent and completely forgettable. 2.8
11. A Beginning - I'm a fan of these albums but was never sold on this outside of its role as a conclusion; it's not a standalone highlight imo. I guess this puts the series to rest well enough, especially after the fantastic run of songs that precedes it, but this project has better reflection/summation tracks (Abandon!) and it takes four minutes to kick off 3.2
12. Bicep - Vaguely enjoyed this but had a strong deja entendu vibe the whole way through 3.0
13. Jolly Fucker - zak do you manage these guys 2.9
14. Dazzling Dreams - Now we're talking. Superficial is the right word for this, but it hits its stride big time. I'm feeling it. 3.7 |
Egarran
01.14.20 | Bitches Brew - It's some weird mix of new Ulver and old Muse with Chino on vox. Too electronic but I like. 4/5
Paradise Circus - Been too long since I heard this quality.
Look at her with her eyes like a flame
She will love you like a fly
WHAT 45 million views, didn't realize it was that popular. It take it all back, total normie music.
4/5
Chinatown - Oh muzak. I need to get oats and rice milk for brekky. Maybe some fancy cheese if there's an offer. 2.5/5
Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst - Yeah he's great at this rapping business, but the I think music is some missing signal broadcast. 2.6/5
My Town - Hoo boy mama that's sugary. I'm gonna need an hour of raw suicide bm after this one. 2.6/5 |

01.14.20 | Thanks Aberf. You are the best afterbirth i know. |
Aberf
01.14.20 | 1. "The 26", can't think of this as good at all unless you have some attachment to this track. I kinda also despise the vocal. 2.2
2. "Ginger & Ruth", it's funny that I just played the playlist and know immediately that this has to be ars' rec once the track changed. It's quite funky, man, but much of my thing. 3.2
3. "Familiar", the problem with rating a song after only listening to it once is that I'd probably never get to realize the true potential of a song. It should be the case with this song also. JK, I liked it that I played it twice. 3.9
4. "the second baptism shoes in fire and ice", too long, also not much of my kind of black metal but I didn't hate it. 3.2
5. "Saishuu Koen", Johnnyofthewellcore at its finest moment. 4.3
6. "Bitches Brew", lol what is this. Why am I enjoying it. 3.7 |
Divaman
01.15.20 | Mode Moderne - 3.4 - reminds me of Interpol. Was isn't a bad thing.
Protomartyr (1) - 2.4 - not the worst thing I've ever heard, but kind of boring. |
TVC15
01.16.20 | Oh shitd didn’t realize this was the list! Gonna check em out real soon |

01.16.20 | About time you showed up. Gonna lock that in Eddie. |
SlothcoreSam
01.16.20 | 13. Jollyfucker. 3.3, angry brit talking his mind, some great 1 liners, and obscure rhymes, not bad, but gets old.
14. Dazzling Dreams, 3.1, a lil bit more post punk revival, not bad.
15. The Chuckler, 3.6, better, singing style reminds me a lot of Nick Cave.
16. I Am, 0.2 , not able to tolerate this, soz.
17. Those Who Can't, Cheat, 3.9, nice glitchy pop with a lot of random instrumentation going on, now this is a jam, and could grow on me. |
Divaman
01.16.20 | Theocracy - 3.1 - Another very dramatic piece. This one could grow on me. |
Aberf
01.16.20 | 7. "Paradise Circus", Trippity hoppity top, chop pop. Plop. Idk what am I saying but this one is dim and cool. 3.8
8. "Chinatown", very cool. 4.0
9. "Sing about me...", Kendrick Lamar is cool and all. This track works better within the album though, not as a single. I would've chosen Swimming Pools or M.A.A.D City though. 3.8
10. "My Town", I'm not emotionally attached enough to this. 3.0
11. "A Beginning", snoozer. 2.5
12. "Bicep", Not sure what was I expecting from this song, it does bounce me up tho. 3.7
13. "Jolly hecker", My innocent ears. 1.0
14. "Dazzling Dreams", how many songs that you had to go through to let this be your song of the decade, Mr. Sandwich? 3.5
15. "Chuckler", nice guitar tone. 3.5
16. "I AM" not able to go through this at all. 1.5
17. Those who can't, cheat" sick song. 10/10 |
ian b
01.17.20 | fuckkkkkk i never noticed that this list got posted, what should i check first? also do you guys need another rec to fill it up??? |
Scheumke
01.17.20 | Just start at januari 1st and work your way down ;). I noticed I've fallen behind again, time to keep it up. Looks like we can still use a rec, so shoot! |
ian b
01.17.20 | well, if i had to fill another spot, i'd give it to “Getting Sodas” by The World is a Beautiful Place... that song still emotionally guts me with every climax that comes to it. an emo postrock classic, while also being a classic individually for Emo and Post-Rock |
madrigal30
01.17.20 | that song is amazing ian

3 songs left! |
ArsMoriendi
01.18.20 | "Dazzling Dreams"
Nice bass, chill atmosphere. This is very generic but still enjoyable.
3.3/5
The Chuckler"
This is a slow burner and I don't really like the vocals, but much like the last one, it's still fairly pleasant. Also, thanks song for teaching me that people with the same can't have different levels of intelligence.
2.9/5
"I AM"
Is this like dance metal? That drum part seems dancy hmmm. Nope, it immediately devolved into lame prog metal. Who invited Geddy Lee to sing this? He's the guy who helps you with shit according to the lyrics, nice what a friend! Wow, he's your conscious too? Damn, he's God I guess. How sacrilegious. God damn, Rush ruined prog, I swear. King Crimson, Yes, and Frank Zappa worked so hard to make it cool and then Rush was like nah let's make it all shrieky and dumb. Shredding time! +.1 for technical proficiency I guess.
2.6/5 |
ArsMoriendi
01.18.20 | "Those Who Can't, Cheat"
This is kinda cool actually. Maximalist r&b! I can't say it's my favorite, but I like the synth bass and the vocals are nice too. Wait, ew why was there a guttural growl? Can I pretend that didn't happen?
3.6/5 |
Egarran
01.18.20 | A Beginning - OK that is very nice. Gotta get used to the singer who's a bit whiny, but I'm a sucker for these romantic shameless indie pop things. 4/5
Bicep - Ooh I'm a Cameron movie. Or a football compilation. Nice chorus, I was actually tapping my foot at the end, like wtf? But it's very harmless. 3/5
Jolly F*cker - I had to restart this and find the lyrics because this sounded like some righteous proper english. But it's mostly just a drunk worker's stream of consciousness. Ehhh nah. 2.4/5
Dazzling Dreams - New wave is back? Who asked for this? I haven't even heard all the Cure albums yet, dammit. That good dash of Interpol helps. 2.9/5
The Chuckler - I think this is the discomfort cats feel when you rub against their fur. 1.8/5 |
ArsMoriendi
01.19.20 | "Heroes for Ghosts"
Atmospheric so far. Prog metal buildup, decent vocals that sound stand out much. Meh, not my thing. Kinda bland.
2.5/5
"Musical Chairs"
Slipknot? GROWL WHINE EPIC RIFF. Sorry not my thing.
1.7/5 |

01.20.20 | Ars's theme for next month.
"OBJECTS THAT I'VE SHOVED UP MY ARSE"
|
Minushuman24
01.20.20 | 1. The 26 - Apologies, I Have None - This is a trip down memory lane. I haven't thought of this band in forever. This is a nice little fun track, but it doesn't even come close to Sat in Vicky Park or Raging Through the Thick and Heavy Darkness of a Bloodlust. 3.4
2. Ginger & Ruth - Jerry Paper - This is every so slightly off, I like it. Very Ars. I can see this being a grower in the future. 3.6
3. Familiar - Agnes Obel - I love her voice, the guy's not so much. But every thing else in this song is stunning--I can overlook that. 3.8
4. The Second Coming - Evilfeast - this is certainly a black metal song 2.9
5. Saishuu Koen - Seiko Oomori - For a slight moment this song reminded me of a Dragon Ash song that I was in love with in high school. The song itself certainly doesn't sound like it though. This is fantastic, I adore her voice. 4.1
6. Bitches Brew - +++ - this is just deftones. It's fine, catchy. Don't think I'll come back to it though. 3.2
7. Paradise Circus - Massive Attack - Holy shit. 4.7
8. Chinatown - Destroyer - yeah, this is really really great too. 4 |
SlothcoreSam
01.20.20 | Yo Minus, raging through...... is prob my second fav song by Apologies, I Have None.

01.21.20 | Clarence Clarity - 2.3 - I don't know how to describe this one, but it didn't really do anything for me.
The Gathering - 3.3 - Starts kind of slow and mysterious, with female vocalist. It's a long one, but off to a good start.
Fair to Midland - 3.1 - Kind of somber, with some piano, then explodes a bit before settling in. Works for me.
Absu - 2.1 - Heavy with dirty vocals. Not my thing at all.
La Dispute - 2.2 - Kind of screamed vocals, and a little disjointed Again, not my thing. |

garas
01.21.20 | "Jolly F*cker" - Oh my... that was horrible. 1.0
"Dazzling Dreams" - Nothing really grabbed me in this one. Just went by. 2.5
"The Chuckler" - Another zero-talent singer, eh? These type of vocals always kill any song for me... 2.0
"I AM" - Way too modern for my taste, and the vocals are totally not my cup of tea. Talented band, though. 2.9
"Those who can't, cheat" - Honestly, the videoclip was better than the song itself because it made me laugh. 2.2
"Heroes For Ghosts" - Clearly overlong, and in some parts I felt the song just doesn't go anywhere. 2.5
"Musical Chairs" - Was this really released in '11? Because it sounded totally like something from the early 2000s. The bass line is mad, I liked it. 3.0
"Ontologically, It Became Time & Space" - Now we are talking. The guitars are too quiet (and the drums too loud) in the mix, imo, I wanted to hear those sick and fast riffs more. I'm more into a slower tempo in BM, but I liked this one too. 3.6
"King Park" - And the vocals ruined the whole thing again... 1.5 |
Divaman
01.22.20 | Black Sabbath - 4.0 - I never heard anything from this album, but I like this, all the more because it's quiet and reserved. |
Divaman
01.23.20 | Trophy Scars - 2.4 - I don't like his voice much. It's abrasive. Hers is pretty, but generic. The song doesn't do anything for me. |
SlothcoreSam
01.23.20 | 18. Heroes for ghosts. 3.0. This is pretty good, but i wouldn't go out of my way to listen again
19. Musical Chairs. 3.5. I liked this one, gonna check the album
20. Ontologically. 3.9. This is niiiiiiice.
21. King Park. 4.5. The last half of this song is 5 all day long, the first half drags a little.
22. Zeitgeist. 3.5. I enjoyed that more than I thought I would. |
Minushuman24
01.24.20 | 10. My Town - Antigone Rising - oh no, this is country as fuck. But not like the good kind, it's like the Little Big Town kind. Sorry. 1.4/5
11. A Beginning - The Dear Hunter - While I was listening, I checked my last.fm. I haven't listened to a single song by these guys since 2016 which was surprising. I feel I'd definitely like this more in the context of the album, or even the last two albums. This is good though, I enjoyed it enough, but would never listen to it as a stand alone sone. 3.1
12. Bicep - TR/ST - The longer this went on, the more I enjoyed this. This is just good fun. 3.4
13. JollyFucker - Sleaford Mods - Well this is british as fuck. It is also ugly and weird. But there's something I really really like about it. I don't really know what tho. 3.5
14. Dazzling Dreams - Mode Moderne - This sounds like so many other modern post-punk songs. Good thing I'm a sucker for that stuff. I don't know if it will ever stand out from the crowd for me, but I'll definitely add it to a playlist here and there. 3.4
15. The Chuckler - Protomartyr - This band consistently falls off my radar. It's a nice rambly song, just sort of pleasant. 3.3
16. I Am - Theocracy - This album cover gives me hope. The Run time doesn't help either. This seems more prog than I expected. I can't tell if I don't mind the singer or hate his voice. Oh there we go, there's those highs ehhhh. The I am Verses are getting a bit much... I guess they're better than the chorus. Yeah this is kinda lame. The ship has sailed on this kind of music for me about a ten years ago. That being said it's not as horrifically cheesy and lame as most other power metal? Nevermind the second half is pretty fucking cheesy. It's a shame. -.1 for shred because fuck shred. 1.9
|

01.25.20 | Protomartyr (2) - 2.3 - I'm thinking this band just isn't for me. I don't like the vocals at all, and the music is pretty monotonous.
Lantlos - 2.4 - Another one that's kind of slow and monotonous. OK, it changed up some about 5 minutes in. Oh good God, that vocal! I love you when you give me dream pop, budge. Not so much when you venture into the heavier stuff.
Just for the hell of it ...
Why Bonnie - 3.2 - much more my style. Melody. Someone who can sing. Upbeat strummed guitar instead of slow, dreary, distorted guitar. Not sure which track would score higher with the others, but this one definitely scores higher with me. |

01.25.20 | Ratings incoming, finally!
The 26: This isn't my favourite genre by far, but this was less bad than I thought at first. Still probably a very generous 2.0
Ginger and Ruth: This track is so Arsy. Ha. Really enjoyed it, it was mixed in an interesting way, where the layered vox provided some kind of bed for the rest of the music to lay down in. The drums were very delish too. I'm going to check this album. 3.8
The Second Baptism... Shores In Fire And Ice: The synths are a little much, but those guitars are nice. Vox are cool too. And it is quite punchy. Overlong, yes, but enjoyable! 3.2
Saishuu Koen: Finally, the time has come to check this Johnny mainstay. She doesn't disappoint, although it is a little too much for me maybe. Her voice reminds me of someone. It's very expressive! Perhaps she's got a hint of Sinaed O'Connor or something? Those drums are totally incredible, and the guitars are played with so much ferocity. Ok I dig this now. Love how she's not at all afraid to go all out en display that crazy amount of feels. Rules. Love it. 4.0
Bitches Brew: Ha, no Miles Davis of course. I like the moodiness of this. Drums sound good. Interesting instrumental choices. This fat chorus would have appealed to me immensely during my teens. Still enjoy this. 3.5

Trifolium
01.25.20 | Paradise Circus: Lovely track of course. I never really listen to Heligoland anymore, but every time I do I love it immensely. 4.8
Chinatown: This was nice. Had some great potential, don't feel it lived up to its promise in the end. But there was some good stuff going on for sure (instrumentally, layers, etc.). 3.0
Sing About Me, I'm Dying Of Thirst: I've never consciously heard a Kendrick track before. Is that weird? Well, now I have. Did I enjoy it? Kind of. It's nice, like the jazziness, but his delivery is not really for me. Plus it's a little too bossa nova in cruise ship hallways-esque vibe-wise for me. And the vox in the chorus are icky. Oh and it's tooooo looooong. 2.7
My Town: A very radio-friendly feelsy track,. You'd sing along in the pub with your mates if you knew the words. 2.5
A Beginning: The problem with these guys is the vocalist and the incredible sense of bombast. I guess they're just not for me. Sorry Schemke! 1.9 |
Divaman
01.26.20 | OK, I won't lie. I'm a scared of this next one. Let's check it out.
Ruben Slikk - 2.3 - Actually, that was way better than I expected. The background music was kind of cool, and at just a little over two minutes, it was mercifully short. It was damned near tolerable. |

01.26.20 | I AM - Didn't really like this. I thought this music died in the 90s. Then thankfully I found out they are christian. I like the no-fucks given attitude though. That is what faith can do. I lasted 6:30 minutes. 2.6/5
Those Who Can't, Cheat - Ewww I feel dirty. And not in the good way. Interesting video. OK, nice trolling, aberf. I should rate this higher bc you're so great, but that would be dishonest. I lasted to 1:48 when that horrible synth-mess started. 1.2/5
Heroes For Ghosts - Like the band, didn't even know this album existed. Not sure where they're going with this song. We are now at 4:15 and not much has happened. Wait, tempo increasing. Now it sounds like modern Anathema. ...Wait, is that a trumpet? Nooooo ffs. 3/5
Musical Chairs - Lots going on. A fun thing that manages to not be annoying (despite that bass in the verse). +0.5 for song length. 3.9/5
King Park - Such serious 'core feels are incompatible with me. Yay a detailed story about a kid being shot. How do you listen to this more than once? Oh FUCK it's 7 minutes. I just saw that now while waiting for the awesome breakdown that better be coming soon. Spoiler alert: It never does.
And no, you're going to Hell, you fucking moron. 2.2/5
Zeitgeist - A new BS song? In SOTD? This seems wrong. Not too bad, kind of Planet Caravan-ish. 3/5 |

01.26.20 | "Ontologically, It Became Time & Space"
THRASHING DRUMS AND RIFFS! SCARY GUTTURAL GROWLS ROAR. I get nothing out of this style of music.
2/5
"King Park"
Wow, those vocals are awful. The riff is fine I guess, but wow those vocals are worse than the last song. Whose horrible idea was it to mix screaming and crying together? This slow guitar part is okay. Oh no, the vocals are back and SOOOO serious. This song makes me hate music.
1/5
"Zeitgeist"
I've heard this album before! Oh no wait, it's the Planet Caravan ripoff! This song is so underwhelming because it's so similar to Planet Caravan, yet it has all of the cool aesthetic taken away to make it different I guess? And by different, I suppose I mean boring. Without comparing it to previous songs though, it's still simple and pleasant to the ears and I like the effect on his voice and that guitar solo.
3.3/5
"Never Dead"
This is so warm and tender. Oh no, the vocals during the chorus killed it. Someone tell Tom Waits to never make post-hardcore music. I like that organ though. Musically this is actually really good. -.5 for terrible growl vocals.
3.6/5
"A Private Understanding"
Jarring, but in a cool way. This got boring after the ditched the jarring part.
3.2/5
"Made Of Paper"
This is pretty. I like the jangly guitar and the windy atmosphere of it all. Simple stuff, but in a good way.
3.8/5
"Goonvibe"
Okay, so there's a chiptune beat. Trap snares and blaring bass too. Yup, this is some sort of trap or whatever. Sach's taste might not be my thing, but at least there's no guttural screaming or cry screaming crap all over it.
2.5/5 |

01.26.20 | 1. 'The 26' - awful shite, cheesy over earnest fake accent punk pop, reminds me of Missing Andy a bit...if you don't know what that means then trust me, it's not good at all. [1/5]
2. Ginger and Ruth - ween-core pastiche boring psychedelic detritus crud [2/5] |
JohnnyoftheWell
01.26.20 | Oh yesss here we go. This list has got an above average rate of anti-Doofs, excited to see where it goes
Will catch up later today hopefully |

01.26.20 | 3. 'Familiar' - Agnes is alright isn't she, bit airy fairy, think I prefer the 'hard stuff' - the more gothic-y Anna Von Haussschmorganborganburgerwolf now. She's still good but this tune does sound like 'pension/financial investment advert trying to be hip' sort of vibe, bit polite n' plinky plonky. It's good, whatever[4/5]
4. 'Second Baptism' - pretty good, is it wrong that I find this style of metal quite 'sweet' now. To me this isn't heavy or threatening anymore, it's the keyboards I think and the choral backing vox, and the whole thing sounds like a tribute at this stage. It's very 'token goth in the print room' for IT Crowd fans. Think I'm saying this is well trod ground, as familiar as your oldest black t-shirt. [3.5/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 5. 'Saishuu Koen' - "I'm Saishuu Baron Koen and this is-a Borat!" sorry. Welcome to the most intense Japanese baby talk vocals I've ever heard! So there's that. Not for me. To appreciate this any more I'd need to understand the lingo dingo. Yeah I actively don't like these vocals now... [2/5]
6. 'Bitches Brew' - sounds a bit like butt alt rock Chino worship, some of the atmospheric touches are alright, some nice tones (def tones hur hur?). No, sadly this is build and release cheese I'm just not feeling. 15 year old me prob would have tolerated it, if not quite have managed to actively like it, because even within the genre it is quite ropey. [2/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 7. 'Paradise Circus' - just reminds of Idris Elba wearing a cool jacket now sadly, but that's not Massive's fault. It's the best on a mediocre album (yes, I tried the album again in full recently and it still doesn't hit the spot sadly). quality song, quality pick for Luther theme tune, yeah not a lot more to say [4.5/5]
9. 'Sing About Me' - I've got to this weird stage with Kendrick where I think he sings a bit like a frog, Kermit Lamar or Kendrick the Frog. Miss Piggy screaming "Kendrieeeee". The rapping is ok it's just the singing is a bit muppet-y. Not my favourite tune on Good Kid, but it's still solid, and this is my favourite 'Kendrick period', nice jazzy vibe [4/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 10. 'My Town' - this is the musical equivalent of an American afternoon 'feel good' movie which is both super glossy yet still gives the impression it had a recording budget of about 70 cents. Lashings, and I mean lashings and lashings, of gooey cheese. One of the key changes nearly made me choke on pure aural over-sugary over-sweetness [2/5]
11. 'A Beginning' - "industrial strength over earnestness and indie preciousness incoming, brace for impact!" As many times as I listen to the Dear Hunter (the shit name alike band of Deerhunter, how upsetting a state of affairs) I forget to issue myself that warning. I always tell myself they'll be good, it won't be a pompous gloop of naff 'over emoting show tune vocals' whiff-waft this time, this will be the good Dear Hunter stuff. No, it's all the same mediocre turd-core [2.5/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 12. 'Bicep' - I quite like the cut of this freak's jib, but a classic example of me wanting this to be better than it is...but it's just not as good as I want it to be, however much I'm actively wishing it to be amazing. It simply isn't. It sounds a bit like an average Depeche Mode instrumental as interpreted by Crystal Castles with some apologetic kinda cool vocals over it all. That isn't a horrible description in my household but it's not that promising either. [3/5]
13. Jolly Fucker - if this isn't a classic then nothing is. The UK is here. [5/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 14. 'Dazzling Dreams' - Joy Division with fruity lyrics. Quite nice, why not. [4/5]
15. 'The Chuckler' - maybe my favourite song from Protomartyr? Definitely a classic with those downtrod vocals and some excellent spidery guitar. [5/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 16. 'I Am' - I Am a Bad, really cheesy theatrical guff, sput loves this stuff so I'm not surprised that here it appears. 11 minutes of this cheesy show-tune'y chug-a-bug pomp? People can enjoy this? Fair play. 100% awful in every way, esp the Riverdance bit at 5:40. [0.5/5]
17. 'Those Who Can't Cheat' - one of the interesting CC tunes, of which there are sadly not many. The snake charmer melody bit is stoopid but I like it. [4/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 18. 'Heroes for Ghosts' - a lot of stuff striving for 'epic' and 'theatrical' on this list. Too much for me. Silje Wergeland has a strong voice but I rarely find where it goes in Gathering songs very exciting really. For such a 'big sound' I don't get how this band manage to make music so melodically and instrumentally mediocre. This was a 'pretty sounding' trudge. [3/5]
19. 'Musical Chairs' - generic emo-y/theatrical/over emoting (again) indie-y sounds mixed with the incredible (it says here) genre-mash rockist sensibilities of bands like (shoot me) The Mars Volta. Hate it. [1/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 20. 'Ontologically, It Became Time & Space' - a bit like Vektor if every element of the sound was made intentionally sonically irritating (esp the drums). [2/5]
21. 'King Park' - instrumentally it's decent but the vocals wear me down, too much like an effort. Prefer the sound of the latest album [2.5/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 22. 'Zeitgeist' - poor old Ozzy. Never could sing really but in a good way most of the time. Not so this time. Ploddin' ballad here. This is no Planet Caravan. More just plain ol' 'stuck in a caravan against your will'. [2/5]
23. 'Never Dead' - is this a Guinness World Record attempt to squeeze as many terrible vocal styles into one song? The gruff honey monster 'if Tim Armstrong lost the cool timbre to his voice' singing is supernaturally terrible. [0.5/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 24. 'A Private Understanding' - refuge! that was a lot of bad music in a row friends. Nearly logged out. The opener was never my favourite from the album but it's good. Works better in the context of listening to the rest of the album after. [4/5]
25. 'Made of Paper' - the most 2019 sounding 'ting on this here comp. Slightly strained/sometime breathy american gal fronted vaguely slacker indie rock. It's sort of in my ballpark but also a bit skippable, maybe partly due to over saturation. Grippy song writing in indie at a premium right now and this ain't that. [3.5/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 26. 'Goonvibe' - sounds like a creepy hypnotist's aid half the time. "You are feeling sleepy, something something bitch ngga chicken". Is this from Sach? It IS from Sach! Yes! Authentique from le underground at least. [0.5/5]
27. 'Trouble in Town' - the king of wholesome earnest stadium chunder returns. I did check this album and I remember the second half of this as one of the experimental moments on the thing. Better than a lot of what they've done but still just, why? [2.5/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 28. 'Getting Sodas' - the acceptable face of emo/indie...but it's emo/indie so 2.5 ceiling. The guitar work is the highlight by far.[2.5/5]
29. 'Young Fathers' - ok sockless hipster indie, overly cutesy but it's alright [3/5] |
DoofDoof
01.26.20 | 30. 'Invented' - Jimmy Eat World do 7 minute + length songs? Oh no. I can feel the testosterone draining from my body, this is a testicle shrinker and a half. Sput really loves earnest wimp-core is what I'm learning more than ever today. [1.5/5]
31. 'Nine Stories' -...and a bitch ain't one. No, let's not do hip hop references, this is more earnest indie. You guys killed me. [3/5] |

The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die - 2.6 - I'm not fond of the vocalist, but the music is nice. Then it gets a bit more intense, and finally ends up somewhere else. This song is all over the place. |

01.28.20 | 17. Those Who Can't, Cheat - Clarence Clarity - this is noisey. I don't know what it is about this, but it doesn't click with me at all, everything feels slightly off. 2.8
18. Heroes and Ghosts - The Gathering - for as much as I feel like I shit on prog, I have liked every single song by The Gathering. Her voice is just very pleasant. That being said, this song is dragging quite a bit for me so far. For what it's worth I think I would have loved this in mid-high school, I like the album cover tho. 3
19. Musical Chairs - Fair to Midland - Oh this is prog as shit. That bass is incredible though. This chorus reminds me of mid 2000's wrestling video games though. So there's that, not my cup of tea but not bad. 2.9
20. Ontologically, It Became Time and Space - Absu- oh shit this shreds. Finally a metal song that isn't boring as hell. I could do with it being about a minute shorter though. 3.6
21. King Park - La Dispute - Fuck all yall this is a classic song 5
22. Zeitgeist - Black Sabbath - I somehow have never listened to this album. Ohhh this is some major Planet Caravan vibes, which is a huge plus. I really enjoy this as a mellow Sabbath song. 3.6
23. Never Dead - Trophy Scars - This song holds a very dear place in my heart. It's attached to someone I'm very close to. It's an interesting mix of sounds that always stuck out to me, I find it painfully beautiful honestly. 4.5

2013 makes perfect sense for this sound. It's catchy, I'll give it that and maybe even pleasant. Pretty good, though not my favorite thing by any stretch.

"Invented"
Very mellow and not actually too emo. Good, I was worried this would be gross like their hits. Pleasant enough, like the last one, but less of a standout and maybe too long for its own good. WAIT NO, DON'T PICKUP AND GET WHINY. Song stopppppp you were doing good. -.2 for that part.

Not like plain yogurt, cuz that's so plain I'd be compelled to add some honey or Ovaltine to that, just vanilla yogurt that you convince yourself "has enough flavor, I guess" but still feels unsatisfying.

Probably ground beef, with cheese, sour cream, hot sauce, black beans...and I guess lettuce just because a crunchy green is pleasant, ooh and cilantro |

01.31.20 | 15. The Chuckler - Hmm, bit mixed on this. Not really feeling post punk in general right now, so maybe that's it. I like the guitar tones and feel this could grow. 3.4
16. I Am - Lmao y'all slated this. Ok, let's see why. This is 11 minutes long, the stakes are raised. Oh goodness a chugtastic prog epic? With good ol' folk melodies that sound like midi? Hmm, not feeling this (or the production) so far. Oh shit, 3 minutes in is megaepic hyperbole chord progression territory and I have a rarely exploited soft spot for this. Good chorus, even though it was kind of boring the second time. Now there's a solo and a bridge ok my mind is wandering does anyone remember that Incubus skit with the "hippopotamus/I wonder why" sample? Wonder if that's Ars' theme for next month. It'd be fun to have a month themed around that and it's got enough arbitrary kookiness that he might go for it hmm. Okay this bridge is gathering steam and the guitarbois are hurling triplets. And now back into straight time. I still don't like their tones. Maybe I'll listen to Nightwish later. Fuck, I'm a basic bitch 2.3 |

01.31.20 | 17. Those Who Can't, Cheat - Some silly silly shit going on here. It's fun. Very fun. This guy's melodramatic vocals are kinda doing it for me, those goofy riffs and licks in the arrangement would be a mess otherwise. Gonna have to investigate this further.
18. Heroes For Ghosts - Partisan insta5. Not my favourite Gathering song, but probably somewhere in the top 20 or so. These guys are better than your favourite band. That atmosphere is gorgeous. 5
19. Musical Chairs - Never really got into this album, and this track wasn't a highlight when I was jamming it but it holds up okay. The bass in the verses is strong stuff. This band are much more photogenic than I expected. 3.3
20. Ontologically, It Became Time & Space - Vicious riffs recorded through a potato with the mids carved out. This kinda rips. Getting a rush here. 3.7
21. King Park - "How do you listen to this more than once? " was actually my reaction the first time I heard this (and the subsequent six, according to my iTunes). Listening again and hmm yes this still has it. Gonna subtract a steep 0.1 because the midway lull loses me. Can see the vox wearing people out, but this no excuse. If you give this less than a 2.5 you have no sensitivity to pathos or narrative in music :] 4.9
22. Zeitgeist - Sexy. The flange is a bit much (a surprisingly immature production choice for Sabbath tbh). Is this stream faulty? Otherwise alright 3.3 |

01.31.20 | 23. Never Dead - I can never tell if Trophy Scars are a pastiche of sentimental bullshit or a genuinely good band. Holy Vacants fucks me up regardless, and this track is in a similar vein. Insincerely saccharine blues guitar bouncing all over the shop hmm ok am on board with this. Up to a point. Hmm Will have to check this EP - this is definitely no Everything Disappearing. 3.5
24. A Private Understanding - More of these guys. Hmm, either their sound has grown on me since the last one or this sounds uncommonly like Paper Cut Exit by Sonic Youth (which I rate quite a bit). I think I get them better either way. The bridge got under my skin and gave me chills. Maybe I should hear this album... 3.7
25. Made Of Paper - Fuck you budgie this is v good. Vocalist reminds me of Feist, esp in her early days Broken Social Scene features. Lazy rock vibes yes yes 3.8
26. Goonvibe - lol "classical" 0.4
27. Trouble In Town - This is one of four tracks from this album that I didn't delete from my library. Let's see how it's doing now. Chris Martin attempting political lyrics still sounds facile af. This man is the embodiment of unhelpful quaintness. The arrangement and dynamics are on point though, good work from team Coldplay. And then there's that abusive police sample. I wrote a chunk in my rev on whether or not this counts as a cheap score for the woke kids (am overall mixed) and these misgivings apply here 3.3 |

"Young Fathers" - The first minute is something I can imagine in an orange juice ad or something. But I don't have any strong feelings about the song. 2.5
"Invented" - I don't have any strong feelings about the song, it is more of my dad's taste or idk. 2.5
"Nine Stories" - "I wake up disappointed every time" - that's how it feels listening to anything from this band. 2.0 |

A Private Understanding - Yay another song from the band I 1.8'd :D
I picture the guitarist at rehearsal, 'guys check this' and then he downstrokes two chords for 2 minutes.
This gets better though. Also the description is correct. 2.6/5
Made Of Paper - I can picture budgie masturbating to this. 3/5
DIARIES OF A KOKEBOSS HLORD - Chicken vault/chicken vault/chicken vault I'm 50 on the beach nigga. OK troll song. 1.1/5
Trouble In Town - Even Coldplay is welcome at this point. But damn it's boring and Martin is a bit of an annoying whiner for a hugely successful artist. 2.5/5
The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die - TIHI. Probably a good song for the genre. 2/5
Young Fathers - Well. Weird and almost interesting. 3/5
Invented - Uh oh 7 minutes from these guys, OK deeeeep breaths, you can do it eg.
I couldn't do it. 2.5/5
Nine Stories - This is the first mewithoutyou song I've heard to the end. The first half tried too hard but the change midways was great. 3.5/5

20- "Ontologically, It Became Time & Space", I'm too much of a pussy for this kind of black metal tbh. 2.8

23- "Never Ded", I really can't pinpoint the interesting part of this song. It's just ok. Perhaps another grower. 2.5
24- "Private Understanding", I usually don't mind repetition in music, especially if it has a great payoff. I didn't find it here, unfortunately. 3.2
25- "Made of Paper", it screams budgiecore if there's one. 3.5
26- "Goonvibe", I don't have N-word pass to listen to this. 2.5
27- "Trouble in Town", I never knew that Coldplay made this kind of song and that's just ok. 3.0

02.01.20 | 28. Getting Sodas - This sounded exactly like I expected it to in a very 3/5 way. 3
29. Young Fathers - Didn't think I was into this for the first minute but then I remembered I was kinda drunk and involuntarily danced to it for a couple of bars. Would probably be a 3 if I were sober but imma bump to 3.5 for the reason alone
30. Invented - Rowan I love you and I guess I see the appeal here, but this song also embodies everything I find kinda lame about this band. Play-crack-the-sky-core with fewer problematic platform issues. +0.5 for overdrive and uplifting vocal harmonies 2.9
31. Nine Stories - This used to be my mwY and maybe possibly still is. I'm a stan for these guys and have got the lyrics under my skin at this time - the depressed walrus character and the bleakest af Jacob's ladder reference get me every time. And the horns. And that meter shift halfway. So good. 5 |

02.02.20 | Bicep: Very Depeche Mode, I like it but at the same time it's a little bit too much. Not bad though! 3.0
Jollyfucker: Bass line and beat are good. Vox are very very very you know. Does get the blood pumping. Reminds me of The Prodigy in a way. Actually enjoyed it. Most of it. 2.8
Dazzling Dreams: Nicely old school sounding again. Fun track, high energy. 3.0
The Chuckler: Lovely guitars, very MBV. Vox are a bit flat. Love how the drums repeat this pattern, trance inducing and that way the other layers changing makes for a nice contrast. 3.2
I Am: Can't deal with the medieval synths and the singing. Perhaps I'd dig this ten years ago. Guitars are actually nice sometimes, but the mix and master is so flat and plastic. 2.0
|
Trifolium
02.02.20 | Those Who Can't, Cheat: Why did I have to sign in to confirm my age for this?! It's nice, much going on but everything clearly placed in the mix. It's very weird but lovely. Diverse. Something else. 3.4
Heroes For Ghosts: The Gathering are one of my favourite bands. Of course this is mainly because of the Anneke-years. Silje's voice has always been a little boring to me sadly. This causes me to almost never be in the mood for newer The Gathering. Luckily the music's still awesome. 4.0
Musical Chairs: Love how triumphant this gets sometimes! Weird track, but I dig it. Nice contrast, fun, energetic and short. 3.3
Onthologically, It Became Time & Space: There we go Egarran. Finally listening to Absu. This is cool! Love the speed, the riffs, the drum tone, the vox are cool too. Never really expected me to dig them to be honest, as you know I'm not the biggest DM fan, but this was enjoyable! 3.6
King Park: Speaking of 'never thought I'd enjoy this', I kind of liked this. Clearly expressed emotions in here. Production is fine. Drumming is tight. It's too long, or is it? Those vox are a little too much, and the lyrics aren't for me. But then again, I did enjoy this. This track confuses me. 3.0

Trifolium
02.03.20 | Zeitgeist: I like this. Bluesy. Love the solo. The percussion is great too. So is the singing. Yeah this is cool, the vibe is great. 4.0
Never Dead: Singing is too sugary for me in the cleans, the chorus is too over the top-sing along. Some fun parts too, so it's not all bad. 2.2
A Private Understanding: There are cool bits here. It's a little long, but the guitar tone is nice. The message is kind of clear after 20,000 times though. Yeah ok, you're just trying to reach this person. We get it. 2.7
Made Of Paper: Nice track of course. Love the drums and the bass. Colourful melody. 4.0
GoonVibe: Yeah ok. 1.2

02.03.20 | Trouble In Town: Don't like the drums at all here. So muffled. And that vocal line is boring and annoying. Loved all of their output up to and including Mylo Xyloto, but their last few are not for me. That ending was totally unnecessary too. 2.5
Getting Sodas: Like the 90s sounding alternative parts here. Vox aren't really my thing, and the drum sound is juuuuust on the right side of wrong, but this is cool overal. Oh wait, there's a sad cello part. I don't dig that. That's one of my pet peeves. EEEW. Pity. And also this takes too long. Yeah no, this should have ended halfway in. 2.2
Young Faters: Percussion is cool. Stop-start nature. The banjo-y and fiddle-y pub nature of this is not something I really enjoy. But it's nicely positive, sunny, and weird! It's cool. 3.2
Inverted: Not bad! The middle section was unnecessary though. 2.9
9 Stories: Never liked any mewithoutYou yet. Horrid name, very annoying voice. This is no exception. Sounds like James Blunt's rockier brother. ''mewithoutYOU'RE BEAUTIFUUUhuUUUULLLLL!!!!!''2.2 |
