My Top 50 Of Decade
One thing I've discovered in my 30s now is there is simply too much good music to listen to in a lifetime. There's plenty of other genres that I can get into but punk/metal was where I grew up and where I've stayed but this site has certainly helped to expand my horizons over the years. This is certainly not the best 50 albums of the decade but most of my favourites. Newer music certainly isn't what it use to be but there's plenty of good bands still hanging around putting out great tunes here's to a brilliant next decade cheers Sputnik! |

18 | | Deftones Diamond Eyes |
17 | | Shadow Of Intent Reclaimer
The most ridiculous vocals I've ever heard. Ben Deur's range is majestic. I love the symphonic elements throughout this one. |
16 | | Make Them Suffer Neverbloom
Deathcore …. guilty as charged. Who doesn't love a good breakdown every now and then? To be fair I really don't listen to a lot of deathcore and if I do, it's bands with more symphonic elements to their work. This is imo the best deathcore album released although Shadow Of Intent is certainly a band that has revitalised it over the last couple of years. Make Them Suffer have changed their sound fairly drastically since this album but I've enjoyed all of them. Their latest single suggests the new album will be a turn back to their heavier side. |
15 | | Insomnium Shadows of the Dying Sun
I mean, I could have picked any of Insomnium's releases this decade but this one just pips it. They just have that penultimate sound that puts them at the top of their genre. |
14 | | Propagandhi Failed States
I haven't delved into the lyrics too much on this one but it was still a great album. A notch down on Supporting Caste but still one of the best punk albums of the decade. |
13 | | Aquilus Griseus
I think I found this band through watching Be'lakor or Insomnium on youtube. Apparently it's one guy from Melbourne, Australia. Unfortunately no follow up releases since this one. |
12 | | Manchester Orchestra A Black Mile to the Surface
I'd never have stumbled on this band if not for Sputnik. There's 3 or 4 absolute bangers on here I love the guys voice. If ever I try to put it on in the car my wife says turn that fucking shit off. She's rather listen to death metal for some reason. Another love it or loathe it band I guess! |
11 | | Cattle Decapitation Monolith of Inhumanity
When this was released, I thought I'd stumbled upon a gem of an underground band. Two albums on and they are certainly gaining a bigger following but I'd always go back to this as clearly their best effort. The clean vocals aren't over used like on the previous effort and each song stands out more on it's own. |
10 | | Batushka Litourgiya
Who would of known all the drama to unfold when this mysterious album came out of nowhere. Like many, it was a different sound that really resonated and I had it blasting for months. It's playback value has probably diminished somewhat since but still enjoy putting it on every now and then. |
9 | | Ouroboros Glorification Of A Myth
It's really unfortunate that this band never got bigger. I believe they are from Melbourne, Australia, and of Greek heritage (may be wrong). This would have to be my second favourite tech death album ever after Pscroptic - Scepter of the Ancients. |
8 | | Frenzal Rhomb Smoko at the Pet Food Factory
One of the first bands I ever listened to is Aussie punk band Frenzal Rhomb. They are an institution in Australia and fairly well known as one of the bigger 90's punk bands on fat wreck chords. For a band that takes the piss out of themselves on a daily basis, this melodic punk masterpiece is one of the greatest skate punk albums known to man kind. A lot of the lyrics, while hilarious in their own right are actually on the mark in most cases and are a true reflection on Australian society. |
7 | | Deftones Koi No Yokan
I've been listening to these guys from the beginning along with korn, limp bizkit, linkin park etc. Those other bands finished up for me in the 90s while The Deftones reinvented themselves into the greatest heavy rock band of the century. Chino is the master! |
6 | | Fleshgod Apocalypse Agony
In my opinion, one of the most under rated mainstream metal bands is Fleshgod Apocalypse. I'm definitely a sucker for symphonic metal and this is by far my favourite release of theirs. While it is a little unrelenting in parts, some of the song transitions here are top shelf. They are I guess one of those bands which you either love or loathe. |
5 | | Lagwagon Hang
90's punk has pretty much gone out the window but a lot of the bands are still kicking. There's not many putting out really great material though. Certainly some metallic roots of the band showing through on this release with their traditional skate punk sound retained in most songs. Joey Cape is my favourite punk vocalist and although he's losing it a bit live these days, his voice is beautiful on this one. |
4 | | Be'lakor Of Breath and Bone
Along with Ne Obliviscaris, my favourite Australian band. Brilliant melodic death metal brings the riffs and atmosphere. |
3 | | Behemoth The Satanist
A very polarising band but I really enjoy most their stuff. If they focus as much on the next album as selling coffee beans and jewellery on facebook we will be in for a treat. |
2 | | Vektor Terminal Redux
I've always enjoyed thrash and for some reason hadn't heard this band until I saw this one on sputnik. Needless to say, listened to their previous two albums and the rest is history. Read recently one of the band members got arrested for domestic violence? Very disappointing if true! |
1 | | Ne Obliviscaris Portal of I
May be Aussie bias, but in my opinion the best metal band of this decade. Three mind blowing albums and a live show to match. I'm really hoping they can continue to put out material of similar quality. |
