ambient techno, minimal techno | 4 | | Lorenzo Senni Persona
Pure electricity. The sound of synapses firing, a series of eureka moments. Senni reduces trance to its synth buildups, eschewing the kick drum in favor of crackling energy. There’s an intensity to these synth stabs drawn from years in punk/hardcore scenes - I’ve never jerked my limbs as sporadically to dance music. The EP shifts from flickering transcendence to gazing melancholy, meta observations on why trance is beloved by its community. When I think of the visceral potential of dance music I always come back to Persona. | 3 | | Geotic Abysma
Microhouse as comfort food for the soul. An album about living with yourself and the small joys of domesticity. I feel guilty ranking such a simply produced record this high (rudimentary beats and pads coupled with string presets), but the intent is fully realized within the parameters. There’s a modesty and generosity here that’s rare to find, a salve for life’s troubles. Synth melodies often trigger an emotional response, but I find myself more taken by the drums. A house beat is the sound of perseverance; on Abysma, it’s minimal form takes the presence of a clock. The album induces moment-by-moment awareness (active listening is recommended), leaving you at peace with the forward march of time. Sometimes that’s all I want from music, so I return here. | 2 | | Burial Tunes 2011 to 2019
Has a series of EPs ever been this dramatically recontextualized? Tunes 2011 to 2019 does more than compile a decade’s work, it folds its parts into a grand narrative of the human condition: the first rumblings of consciousness become a journey through strife, loneliness and redemption. Voices speak to another across a tracklist that showcases the breadth of Burial’s vision, opening portals between genres like how you discover new ways of being in the world. All this inflated language to say: it might be better than Untrue. | 1 | | The Field Looping State of Mind
The Field rendered in high definition, introducing the muscularity of rock music to his laminated loops. Live bass and drums interlock in hypnotic grooves as synths send you to a state of sublime. Every track is a hit with its own personality, from the virtual discotheque of “It’s Up There” to the beachside psychedelia of “Burned Out” to the self-care cleanness of “Then It’s White”. Never has minimal techno been so immersive, so enlivening as within these shimmering circuits of sound. A modern classic. | |

01.29.20 | Notes:
- I excluded art pop leaning releases like James Blake's s/t, Arca's s/t, Sophie's and Yves Tumor's debuts. They'll be on my decade list next week.
- Spent most of the month revisiting and checking out stuff I missed. Around 10 newcomers placed here.
- Was worried there might be too much 2019 but 11 releases seems reasonable. | Relinquished
01.29.20 | aye | Trifolium
01.29.20 | Omg so many great ones!
1 of course, and great to see 78 too.
And 5. And 23. And 48. 87. 100. | dedex

this month, i've been revisiting a lot of artists I didn't give enough of a chance as well -- s.a.m. (that album you have on here is gorgeous), steve hauschildt, telefon tel aviv, djrum (as you know). also, New Energy would be my Four Tet pick for the decade, but i've finally been giving 37 the love it deserves recently too. don't know why it took so long. | luci
01.29.20 | thank you! glad I stalked your ratings to that Fennec, what an endearing house record. that Ishome is a real sleeper hit, grows in estimation with each listen. was surprised at how well the Unbalance record holds up (was trying to make a statement by placing it one spot above Immunity). I love New Energy but TILIY had to be the one, if only for how formative it's been to my taste. i hope you get to the URA album, jammed it today and considered ranking higher, just stunning | Pangea
01.29.20 | great list. i will check some stuff here. i love 76, 62 & 33 | Chortles
01.29.20 | unbalance, yes! such a great album. need to hear URA still too. forgot to mention that i still revisit 26 very often and it just holds up so well, still find it so punchy and addictive! Heat and Compro are def the albums of 2018 for me in terms of still being deeply anchored in my consciousness | ShitsofRain
01.29.20 | got a few favorites of mine as well | Winesburgohio
01.29.20 | terrific, i'm still so thrilled 2 exists in the form in does (the tracklisting eeeee) uhh have u heard Elysia Crampton? one of my favourite artists of last decade, I think you'd like her | Saros
01.30.20 | 20, 25, 58, 73 are all great. I know next to nothing about house music but I took a chance with 58 and ended up enjoying it. | kevbogz
