DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | please read the description. once we have a winner, I'll set up a voting list for us to start, but it'll essentially be a list compiling every studio album track from an artist and be set up like this: "smells like teen spirit" vs "heart shaped box"; we'll vote on the songs and the winners will carry over to the next round until we have a champion |
tyman128
04.25.20 | this seems like a pretty cool idea! my vote's for TDEP |
ArsMoriendi
04.25.20 | Totally should include Talking Heads |
Sowing
04.25.20 | Start with Radiohead |
DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | not gonna lie sow, i want nirvana or radiohead to get this :p lol |
DoofDoof
04.25.20 | I'll put a second vote up for Nirvana - I think someone used to do these best songs by a band' voting lists? Also, once you select a band are you going to give each user a vote for one song only or say two or three? |
DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | well, i had it in my head it was going to be like 1. "smells like teen spirit" vs "heart shaped box" 2. "lithium" vs "breed" and the user will say "heart shaped box", "breed", etc. and i'll count up votes from that. or do you think that's a bad idea? open to suggestions, like. |
ArsMoriendi
04.25.20 | "1. "smells like teen spirit" vs "heart shaped box" 2. "Lithium" vs "breed" "
None of these four are in my top 20 favorite Nirvana songs >:( |
ArsMoriendi
04.25.20 | If you're gonna include hits at least pick like Come As You Are (aka their best single)
But also Milk It > their singles |
DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | it'll be every song from their studio albums |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.25.20 | Oh nice!!! Either Nirvana or Radiohead are great starter picks, but v different in that everyone tends to like Nirvana for roughly the same qualities, whereas Radiohead draws a whole range of different preferences. Radiohead gets my vote, I guess
"None of these four are in my top 20 favorite Nirvana songs >:("
Cmon Ars, Heart Shaped Box is top 2 Nirvana minimum ;]
EDIT: Milk It is their other top 2 contender, so I guess you win |
DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | so, quick math, i think it's 38 songs that'll be going against each other like this: "lithium" vs "breed". |
ArsMoriendi
04.25.20 | "it'll be every song from their studio albums"
No Incesticide included? |
ArsMoriendi
04.25.20 | "i think it's 38 songs"
39, unless you're omitting either Downer, Endless Nameless or Gallons of Rubbing Alcohol Flow Through the Strip |
DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | well, where do you draw the line? it's like with the album of the month thing i do, if we do it for everything other than studio albums it becomes messy imo. could you imagine doing frank zappa's discog? fuck me haha |
DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | like i say, i'm open to suggestions on how to do this. |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.25.20 | (hey guys, everyone vote Frank Zappa!) |
ArsMoriendi
04.25.20 | If it helps: if you include Bleach, Nevermind, In Utero, Incesticide, and all original songs from With the Lights Out, it's only like 80 songs still
"(hey guys, everyone vote Frank Zappa!)"
Don't tempt me Johnny's he's legit my fave, I once made a long ass list ranking his entire studio discography each with long descriptions |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.25.20 | I think sticking to LPs for the sake of simplicity works unless a band has a particularly iconic EP or comp (e.g. personally wouldn't include In Rainbows Side 2, but Incesticide probs has a fair claim) |
ArsMoriendi
04.25.20 | I'd say Incesticide is pretty iconic
Sliver, Aneurysm, Been a Son, and Beeswax are all on there |
DoofDoof
04.25.20 | I like the song vs song idea
Guess you just select the match ups at each stage randomly? |
DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | exactly doof, the only problem is when we come to odd numbers, in which case i'll have to drop a track? |
Pikazilla
04.25.20 | put me down for nin pls |
DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | and yeah, dont get me wrong ars, i love incesticide, but it's not an offical album. i guess we could include it if everyone feels that passionately about it |
JohnnyoftheWell
04.25.20 | You could cull an interlude or bonus track in the case of odd numbers? Don't think anyone would object if you dropped Treefingers or Downer, say?
*braces for furious retort* |
Storm In A Teacup
04.25.20 | nirvana |
DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | "I think sticking to LPs for the sake of simplicity works unless a band has a particularly iconic EP comp (e.g. personally wouldn't include In Rainbows Side 2, but Incesticide probs has a fair claim)"
well this is it. if people are vocal about it, we can add eps etc as an when. but like you've said, the reason i say just LPs is because it adds simplicity |
ArsMoriendi
04.25.20 | Still voting for Talking Heads
79 songs, we could always leave out Bill, cuz it's only on the CD version of naked, not the LP, so 78 |
EvoHavok
04.25.20 | Out of those 10 choices, QOTSA. Otherwise, Alice in Chains would be worth adding for this kind of contest and I think most people would like the Jar of Flies EP included, heh. |
DrGonzo1937
04.25.20 | you wanting alice as your vote evo? |
EvoHavok
04.25.20 | If you add it, sure :). |
garas
04.25.20 | Huhuhuh, that's a very tough one. I have to think about it. |
dedex
04.25.20 | let's go with QOTSA |
mrsaturn123
04.25.20 | Radiohead! |
SlothcoreSam
04.25.20 | Nirvana |
JDubb
04.25.20 | NIN!!! |
Josh D.
04.25.20 | this is a songwriting contest and Nirvana is winning? ok |
Icebloom
04.25.20 | Fun idea, I'd say Radiohead would be a good start |
botulist
04.25.20 | guided by voices. they have more songs than the site's current, past and future users combined. |
ajcollins15
04.25.20 | Radiohead for sure |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.26.20 | radiohead |
Rowan5215
04.26.20 | voting Radiohead mainly so the boomers don't get Nirvana |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
04.26.20 | pretty much |
budgie
04.26.20 | none of these bands are good so count me out |
ArsMoriendi
04.26.20 | Radiohead's a boomer band too, don't fool yourself |
SlothcoreSam
04.26.20 | Talking Heads is a Boomer band, Nirvana is a Slacker, or Gen X band. |
ArsMoriendi
04.26.20 | Talking Heads is better than Nirvana and probably also better than Radiohead if I'm being honest |
Rowan5215
04.26.20 | probably but you gotta vote tactically here, I'd vote for NIN in a pinch but the risk of Nirvana winning, thus perpetuating the myth that they were ever good even further, is just too great to chance it |
DrGonzo1937
04.26.20 | i'm glad peeps are going for radiohead tbh, should be fun.
i'll close this at the end of today, so if you haven't put your vote in do so now |
garas
04.26.20 | Going for Black Sabbath would be way too evil, huh?
But if that's not an option, then I'll vote for Nirvana as well. |
DrGonzo1937
04.26.20 | All of the bands being suggested will inevitably get their chance in the future (assuming this thing is a success), but you've got to look at this logically as well. As Rowan has already said, if you're wanting your vote to have any sort of weight behind it, it's going to have to be put towards either radiohead or nirvana, since they are the runners for taking this forwards. |
ReturnToRock
04.26.20 | Yeah, going with Nirvana here. |
rabidfish
04.26.20 | zeppelin! |
Avagantamos
04.26.20 | dillinger, as they're the only band here I like (haven't checked talking heads though so they might be good idk) |
DrGonzo1937
04.26.20 | VOTES CLOSED
|
DrGonzo1937
04.26.20 | Before I open the Radiohead voting ring, am I going to get an objection for just using studio album songs, or is there a broad consensus for eps or something to be included? |
ArsMoriendi
04.26.20 | Radiohead has exactly 100 songs across their studio albums, so yeah exclude their rarities and non-album singles |
Uzumaki
04.26.20 | Radiohead would’ve been my vote. |
Demon of the Fall
04.27.20 | Only just seen this but happy with the result. |
