Round 4: Season 3: Continental Recfest

Ok this round we are going to Oceana or Australia or whatever you want to call it! Wooooo! Basically any artist from that area counts as long as it’s not on mainland Asia I guess. Things get interesting now as we halfway done and the competition only gets tougher.

This bands from New Zealand right? Can’t stop listening to this record. It’s sort of psychedelic but groovy.

There’s something to be said about a band in this relative day and age who still “rawk” you know what I’m saying? Seldom do you hear a band nowadays that just kind of rawks I guess. The last great band to do that was like Nirvana or something. Anyways this band does a pretty good job of just rocking and rolling super hard. Sure it kind of dips it’s toes in some punk or post punk or whatever but when I hear this I just kind of think of the heyday of rock music I guess. Maybe that’s weird but for it is worth I miss that kind of feeling. It was good to feel like that again. This album is full of just rough riffs and attitude and some pretty good goddamn songs in there too somehow.

Within like 5 seconds I was like “oh. Yeah this is pop punk. Aka the worst genre ever.” I was like man hopefully there ain’t some whiny ass lame vocals or this is for sure a stinker and then sure enough dude comes in and pop punks all over the fucking place. I mean how can you take a genre that was supposed to be a big middle finger to commercialized music and commercialize it? How can you corrupt a genre that was out to change and destroy modern conventions of music and the way we consume it. Punk was made into an industry and like a math formula to be sold to the masses. How can you take a genre that is supposed to be the antithesis of pop music and actively try to make it accessible and easy to listen to? Maybe I’m a pretentious fuck but that’s never sat right with me. That being said it IS SUPER catchy and the band is xtra tight. If this was a pop punk tournament I’m sure this would kick ass but I’m biased and I hate this genre.

Maybe this is the wrong album for me or something but yeah just couldn’t get into this at all. The album flow is weird and though the sound is somewhat homogeneous it still feels like the album jumps around. Yeah it’s weird. As far as the actual sound yeah it just never really grew on me. It always sounded overly serious and dramatic without any deeper reason or anything. Just like creepy Halloween music for the sake of being creepy or something. Maybe I just don’t get it but it never moved me like I felt like it should. Just sounded cheesy and lame. The music wasn’t interesting and the atmosphere felt thin. I feel like maybe I should try a different album from this band. It either sounds like Halloween music with the tongue nowhere near a cheek or like a soundtrack to some medieval fantasy movie or something. Just couldn’t get into this at all.

Is this post rock? It sounds like post rock but doesn’t fall into the same trappings that post rock bands usually fall victim to. There isn’t a whole lot of cheesy build ups to some dramatic crescendo climax thing. And there isn’t like 11 instruments doing simplistic ass bullshit. I’m pretty sure it’s only 3(?) instruments the entire time and it is very mellow and melancholy through the entirety. Violin, drums, and like fingerpicked electric guitar or something. It’s ridiculously chill but sad. This benefited a lot from repeat listen as I was feeling hella meh about this record. Eventually I got into the vibe a lot which is really all I’m looking for mostly. Can I get lost in an album? If I can forgot about my daily life for a small amount of time and just get lost in the music then I usually like an album. This eventually got me there and even though I feel like I’ll have to be in a particular mood to jam this it’ll be good when I do.

So this could have potentially fallen into novelty territory. But once you get over the shock and hilarity of hearing an Australian accent make rap sounds and reference kangaroos and what not you’ll realize these dudes are actually pretty good! The beats are sometimes funky and sometimes a little dark and that’s like my two favorite types of beats! But yeah it’s not the most groundbreaking thing or whatever but it’s hella fun and worth more than it’s fair share of talent. The wordplay is good and funny. The flows are pretty great. I mean this could’ve been a disaster but I ended up loving it haha. Even as a seemingly afterthought of a record this almost won.

This is the motherfucker right here. Acoustic guitar but it’s actually played well! Like holy shit every time you hear an acoustic guitar it’s some dude singing about dumb sad personal shit or whatever. It’s like dude you have a fucking guitar do you know how these things were originally played? It’s a Spanish instrument and those motherfuckers be slaying! But yeah it’s usually accompanied by like a few other instruments (sitar, hand drums, flute, etc) and that’s really all it needs. I feel like the simplicity of only a few instruments at a time really helps each individual one make its mark in each song. It stands out and adds to the song rather than having a token cameo. The second to last song drags the score down a bit as it doesn’t really fit sonically and the lyrics are sort of weird and distracting. Other than that very interesting and not what I was expecting. Really good rec my guy.

Maybe closer to classical music than anything. This isn’t bad I just know basically nothing about classical. I don’t think this was meant to be a classical sort of record it just so happens to slightly sound like that I guess haha. Mostly because the strings. Holy shit I have no idea how to express myself. Other than that there’s not a lot to connect this to like culturally or anything. It’s vocal-driven for the most part and built on very unfamiliar song structures. I truly am never really able to predict where the song will go next and that’s almost always a positive for me. It that sense it is pretty experimental. At least for my western ears. The B side to me is a lot better as it seems more built on mood and whatnot instead of vocal chants and responses. Nothing here is really bad at all although the vocals do get a bit grating at times. It’s mostly pretty good and fairly thought-provoking. Can’t say I’ve heard anything like this. Nice.

Nothing new to be found here. It’s straight forward and unsubtle which is fine by me. This record isn’t meant to invent anything or anything or experiment nd just sort of stands as a testament of the longevity of punk rock. How can such a simplistic genre still be able to provoke and get the body moving even 50 years later? It’s a good record and gacked in anger is a song that wold stand up well in basically any genre. Don’t have a lot to say about this really. There’s no punches to be pulled. It’s bass guitar drums and vocals and they bash away. Good stuff haha.
