Umbrella Contest 2020 Round 11: Torn Umbrella

2 more out and 5 still in!
1The Doors
Strange Days

1. Link a song via YouTube, Spotify, Soundcloud, Bandcamp, DailyMotion, Vimeo... or whatever you like as long as I don't have to download something.

2. The genre this round is blues! Country blues, blues rock, jump blues, delta blues, electric blues, even punk blues. Sad simple music that follows those classic 12 bars.

3. Aim to impress me with what you pick, since I'm rating these.

4. If I know the song already, I'll tell you to pick something new, otherwise you're good.

5. I'm going to start each new round every Tuesday night, so if you're late, you're out.

***The winner can recommend me whatever album blah blah you know***

Yagga Blues

Minushuman
“Yagga Blues”

Damn that’s creepy, like someone is playing on a skeleton. Some sort of tribal drums and mumbles. That chanting reminds me of Dead Can Dance, which is good. This is super neat. Both the male and female vocalists mesh super well.

4.5/5 (ROUND WINNER, but no new handicaps!)
3Ramleh
Hole in the Heart

GhandhiLion
“Spear Flowers”

Hello distortion. Ah dissonance too. Sounds like a suffering bird caught in a train engine played on loop. I’m getting kind of numb to how jarring this is and I'm starting to notice how uneventful this song is. It reminds me of this awful track my friend made back in high school where he distorted the hell out of his vocals, except that song was only like 2 minutes and this is 7. Okay, I lied, this is way better than that. Wow that feedback is irritating, but at least it’s changing direction.

2.8/5 (ELIMINATED!)

“Come Closer”

Late night hardcore gay night club vibes. I like the beat and it uses its abrasiveness to be catchy. Seriously, this is some intense sex music. Makes me miss this one Manhattan gay bar I used to visit some weekends before COVID hit.

3.7/5 (Passed to next round)

“Der Tod ist Ein Dandy”

Oh look, it’s the band I have to copy/paste the name of always because I never spell it correctly! Yup, those are so machine sounds alright. Creepy German dude and super low mixed, but totally still noticeable bass (weird decision, but okay.) Apparently their name in English means Collapsing New Buildings and this song is called “Death Is a Dandy.” “Death Is a Dandy” by Collapsing New Buildings. Sounds sillier in English. Oh shit, he switched to English. This was okay, but it didn’t grab me.

3.4/5 (Passed to next round)

Oil of Every Pearl's Un-Insides

Pangea
“Ponyboy”

Robotic dance music with cutesy vocals. This is fairly straightforward, so I don’t know what else to say about it. It was fine.

3/5 (ELIMINATED!)

"Haemorrhage- Era One Reconstructed"

Uh oh, lo-fi extreme metal. Wait no, a techno beat? Okay, now it’s mixing the two and giving late 80s Ministry vibes. Why is extreme metal so much easier to appreciate with industrial elements? Is it just me, but I don’t hate this at all. The electronic scratchy sounds are neat. This is now more clubby than metally and I dig this part. When I saw this band tagged as “industrial and black metal” I was worried for a moment, but this isn’t bad at all.

3.3/5 (Passed to next round)

Budgie
“Megalomaniac”

Probably the closest anything this round has gotten to sounding like Nine Inch Nails. Dancy, but also fairly alt metal. This is so 90s it hurts, but not in a bad way. The riff is simple, but memorable. The vocals are trying to be creepy, but mostly come off as cheesy (at least compared to other industrial songs this round.) I don’t love this, but honestly, in some creepy industrial club, it’s probably a bop. Do industrial clubs still exist?

3.5/5 (+.5 for winning last round) = 4/5 (Passed to next round)
