12.04.20 | I applied to Yale's English and Film and Media Studies combined PhD program; UCBerkeley's English PhD Program; and UCIrvine's English PhD program
Applying to three prohibitively selective schools at this level is asking for trouble for sure but I have a wacky sense of confidence that overrides my sense of what's a good decision and sometimes it works, who knows. My rec letter writers are all really strong too so hopefully that helps. We'll see by early March, probably more like February too. (People applying to Yale English last year started posting their results Feb 7.) I also applied to English PhD programs at UK schools last year and got into Cambridge so I'm hoping that portends something or other. |
robertsona
12.04.20 | Definitely a downer that lots of schools (including my alma mater, which I would have applied to even though I'm not sure they love taking their own undergrads) are shutting down their PhD programs = more people applying to the schools that did not do so = more selectivity. But whatever, can't help that |

12.04.20 | oh sorry rob we must have commented at the same time, science education and ill likely be going back someday to finish my poli sci grad work but covid has made me skeptical of doing that. |

12.04.20 | @ghostman Nah not at all, I'm an academia man through and through. If I wanted to work in Hollywood I'd probably apply to some sort of UCLA MFA type thing but that's not my speed
Unlike lots of people getting PhDs though I'm not 1000% set on teaching university though. I could be a cool unusually qualified high school teacher or something idk |
GhostB1rd
12.04.20 | People always bitch about high school teachers not being paid enough but they have sweet fucking hours, summers off, relatively low stress. No shortage of applicants where I grew up. |

fuck it man, I did that for undergrad, and it was fine, but I regret not doing it for grad school. if I ever go for a phd(unlikely) the sky is the limit |
robertsona
12.04.20 | I also only applied to three schools for undergrad hahaha. That was more of an issue of the early decision structure and whatnot though |

wow dude that's fucking awesome! my undergrad is english composition with a minor in film and media studies, its really great to see someone pursuing the same thing at a higher level. i wish you all the best, those are all wonderful programs. the head of the media studies program during my undergrad was a berkeley media studies graduate and i still keep in contact with her to this day, shes always raved about their program.
"I could be a cool unusually qualified high school teacher or something idk"
thats literally the boat im in currently lmao. got a family now though so money is a bit more of a nag when considering grad school. i was actually accepted to an education masters program eariler this year but they ended up cancelling it because of covid. the goal is to go back one day so i can teach at a community college somewhere, teaching is more my passion than research anyways.
regardless best of luck my dude and for sure update us as to which program you go with! |

yeah the most rewarding experience of my adult life was teaching 10th grade history at a title 1 school in florida. i left for DC shortly after and worked in corporate/office environments for about 3 years but ultimately decided it wasnt for me and came back down to the south to teach again.
much happier now, DC was not good for mental health lmao. |

12.04.20 | my mom taught special education for many years, and because of the need in that area it pays unbelievably well. she was more than able to take care of all of us growing up and herself. she is a constant source of inspiration for me. I thought about following her path for a long time. it is a wonderful and challenging job that needs more and more teachers every year. starting pay here is 78k a year for the field and rapidly rising. |

12.04.20 | nice to hear buddy, hope it all works out. ya ever think of applying for a state school as a failsafe? I made the mistake of going big dick on apps before covid and long story short it all fell through, but luckily I app'd for SDSU's grad program |

01.30.21 | Hearing back in a week or so. You KNOW I’ll report back to Sput. Although I predict acceptance rates will hover around—seriously—1-5% for the schools I picked, from an already competitive pool. If I get in I’ll cry. If I don’t I’ll cry. Either way I’ll let you guys know. |

I can't promise anything of course, but your applications look, from where I'm standing, well-suited to the rigorous standards of our institution. Thank you for your interest in continuing your education with Sputniversity, and you'll hear back shortly with our ultimate decision. |

01.31.21 | “schools are being so much more lenient this year. no GRE requirements, no sat or act. man to be a student in 2020/2021, very lucky”
idk, man. This is only true for some schools. 2 out of 5 that I applied to still required GRE scores, and one more strongly recommended submitting them. |
unclereich
01.31.21 | yea thats 2/5 instead of the usual 100 percent like in my experience. my little cousin got in to Stanford with under a 4.0 no sat/act. im jealous and have every right to be |
deathschool
01.31.21 | Not saying you don’t have the right to be, but it’s not true of all schools is all I’m sayin. |
robertsona
01.31.21 | Nah it’s worse for students this year. Huge influx of apps for grad schools (because of COVID and because many schools shut the whole application shit down) and lots of schools expressly “focusing on the students we have”. No GRE sorta rules when it’s the law of the land but it will be harder to get into grad school this year than any other year from my perspective. UCBerkeley received 3x amount of apps from last year |
Ryus
01.31.21 | i feel blessed in my choice never to apply to grad school |
robertsona
01.31.21 | just seems like a respectable way to avoid the 9-5 (which I don’t think I’ll ever be amenable to). I’m not 100% banking on getting in because getting in is hard but I’m probably 85% banking on it. I also just like school I guess all told. It’ll be awful sometimes I know but yah humph |
