Ate Roadkill: Shat Blood
Something old, something new. Something red, something blue... the ongoing listening log 2021. just the stuff worth noting that I've listened to this year, even if it's just worth noting for being particularly average or awful!

Zavala's production is still unmistakable, but it seems that Onry is having a weird midlife crisis where he reverts to a spooky Hot Topic-wearing teenage Atmosphere stan who likes to play with ouija boards in his moms garage in terms of lyrical content. The instrumental version of this will likely become the quintessential version. Yikes.

The many Kuti children may always be a tad too derivative of their fathers work to escape his shadow, but you can never go wrong with some more solid Afrobeat. The Made side takes more risks but ultimately just makes me want to go back to listening to Femi worship his father some more.

Hilarious that I had to add this to the database. On one of the new episodes of RuPauls drag race (either UK or US I don't remember) the ladies had to perform to a new RuPaul song that IMO pretty blatantly ripped off What Is Love. This observation spiralled out into me deciding to investigate the origins of the Night At The Roxbury classic (if you are my age there is a 99% chance that this is where you first heard it). Did not disappoint (it's bad).

Kinda big on the imagery of Witches laying eggs. Also this dude looks like the love child of Elijah Wood and Forrest MacNeil which is pretty incredible. Good album but a bit too improvisational for me, would benefit from a little structured dynamism to at least give some of the tracks some climactic payoffs rather than just jamming until they peter out.

51 | | Madlib Sound Ancestors
I'd love to actually know the full extent of Four Tets involvement in this on "arrangement duty". It certainly sounds like a more cohesive, singular album experience than the beat tapes Madlib usually puts out, but there is also an extra polish, depth, and atmosphere to it that sounds particularly Hebden curated. Whatever the case, this fucks. A masterclass in Instrumental Hip-Hop. I do wish it ended with 'Chino', but it wouldn't feel properly "Hebden Arranged" without at least one grievously questionable sequencing choice.
