Been running my system, 7 or 8 years ago now, picked up the high end tin cans with a 2-year replacement warranty, been going back to the shop every year and 10 months or so, saying some bullshit about how they don't charge properly anymore, swapping them in and re-upping the warranty, boom. Trifolium 02.18.21	Dude that Coleman record is amazing! Really love how open it is, with so much room to breathe. The mix of my version (with a complete hard stereo split, sax in one channel, bass in the other) works wonders too.

Yes, Shape of Jazz is such a cool produced record, heard somebody (on rym, maybe?) talk about how it doesn't really use chord instruments, and gives it a really sort of uniquely sparse feel
Pangea 02.18.21	Yeah it definitely has somewhat of a sparse feel while still blasting instruments in your ears, definitely get that vibe. I really like how each progresses as well. I see that free-jazz is mentioned a lot in regards to the shape of jazz, but to me the structure still feels purposeful, even if it may not be completely traditional (although idk enough about jazz to make that judgement probably)
porcupinetheater 02.18.21	Definitely agree with you on that, Pange, it always felt to me like something that held the door open for free jazz to really start exploring structureless/atonal pieces, without abandoning the more comfortable 50s style completely. One foot in the river, one on the shore and all that

I've always had a less-is-more kind of attitude to many things in art (Man, that sounded conceited. I meant it though! Mondrian, Rothko, Newman in painting, Minimal Techno in music, etc.)

I can get on board with maximalism more in music than most other things (having a million sound threads to parse really helps the ADD), but always love people figuring out the ways to use the least they're able to express something, way less to lose in the clutter

Trifolium 02.18.21	Dude that Candiria quote is awesome. Exactly right too. And I love maximalism as well haha, sometimes an overload of stuff can be incredible and perfect and exactly what I need. When done right though, minimalism can be so immensely impactful. There's just something hypnotizing and immediate and monolithic about it when it's done right. Like they've found some sort of truth or something. Hard to explain really. But of course less minimal stuff is superb too. Speaking about that, this Pharoah dude surely knows how to go there haha! Not sure if the vox are always my thing, but I do really appreciate this one. It makes me feel this urge to sing along as weirdly and expressively, good thing that I'm working from home and that nobody's there but me and my potted plants!!!
porcupinetheater 02.18.21	I totally feel that, vocals definitely caught me by surprise the first time through! First brush I’d had with vocal jazz and then it acclimated and I floated off on bliss completely. Maximalism indeed lol! Also speaking of unexpected vocals, just noticed for the first time now, in Lonely Woman of Shape of Jazz, like right after the 2:05 mark, buried way way way back in the mix, if you listen, you can just hear somebody go (woo!) and it’s the most adorable little thing

You just know the musicians were totally feeling it whenever these things pop up. It happens in a lot of Coltrane as well (I believe?). That was a lovely experience porc, thanks for kicking this thing of with a bang! Loved both of them, for entirely different reasons. Jazz might just be the single best genre in music for me. Can't wait for the following editions of this, but next week it's my turn! I've chosen my albums and provided a short description and links to the records in the spreadsheet. If you can post that list whenever you see fit I'd be eternally grateful porc 💕
