2021: The Year of Jazz

Been seeing some more jazz bumps than usual lately, and with how fucking big the whole scope of the jazz world is, figure it might be pretty neat to have a weekly listening guide with 2 jazz records, selected by each week by different users that we can all hop on and get to talking about some similar albums. Some ideas gonna follow in the list after the first 2 hand-curated motherfuckin' records, some free jazz landmarks. JazzYearJazzYearJazzYear
1Ornette Coleman
The Shape of Jazz to Come

1959 - Right on the ground floor, an album that helped to throw the doors wide open on all the strange corridors free jazz would travel down through the 1960s. Still very warm, it dances around and swings like so many 50s records that came before, but throws aside the rhythmic pulse and traditional melodies to wrench the genre away from what was starting to look like a comfort zone. The movement turned out to be so cataclysmic that would never be any going back. Guess it earned its name.
2Pharoah Sanders
Karma

1969 - And exactly 10 years later, here's what it was able to give rise to. Becoming a band leader in his own right after joining up with Coltrane for those frontierless Impulse records, Pharoah took things to a place more cosmic, and more spiritual. The 30+ minute statement of purpose The Creator Has a Master Plan is the sort of jazz that isn't content to stop until it catches the horizon, gentle vocals occasionally appearing as guiding beacons to the careening musicianship, egged on by the raw physicality of Pharoah's tenor sax. Colors is a pretty nifty cut, too.
3Jazz is Dead
Blue Light Rain

Alright, hi again. Here's what I'm thinking. I made a google sheet, here's a link

4Jazz is Dead
Laughing Water

Anyone who wants to can right themselves in for an open week, pick a couple of records - from old school bops to looser interpretations, whatever - jazz ain't got no rules that weren't made for breaking. Pick a couple you see interesting parallels between, pick a couple old favorites, some with similar atmospheres, a couple you've been meaning to listen to but haven't gotten around to yet - whatever. Whatever your beautiful jazz loving heart desires.
5The Jazz Butcher
Fishcotheque

And so everyone has a chance, after you sign up, wait a few weeks before signing up for another slot so that anyone who wants to hop in that hasn't had the chance can take a slot.
6The Jazz Butcher
Cult of the Basement

Really hope y'all are interested! I think it'd be really cool to all by wandering together as a little Sputjazz community stopping off at the same records at the same time, exploring some things together, old standards, new favorites, hidden gems. Love you all, if anybody's got any other ideas, feel free to toss 'em out! Let's fucking jazz it up
