02.15.21 | Hey all! Hop on down if you're interested! Sign up in the google doc, and when it's your week, feel free to make your own list, write as much or as little description on your two record choices as you like, or I can pop one up for you if you're cultivating an aesthetic on your list page and don't want to throw it off. Jazz! |
osmark86
02.15.21 | I know pretty much jack shit about jazz in general, but I'm a big fan of Robert Glasper and jazzy chords in all genres. if you're going to be recing albums in lists etc, I might check some of those out to see what I've been missing all these years. |
Trifolium
02.15.21 | Yipppeeeeeeee it's here!! 😍💖
Going to read this when my coffee is ready. |
porcupinetheater
02.15.21 | Hell yeah osmark, I ain't the most experienced jazzer either, just thought it would be a cool thing for a genre that's not the hugest of Sput genres to be listening to an album or two at the same time so we have things to chat about, kind of exploring about as you care to. And if you got some cool records with those jazzy chords and you want to drop a couple for a jazzy non-jazz week, fucking go for it! |
Dewinged
02.15.21 | Same, not a conosseur myself, but I do jam some classic bops now and then, will be following closely, specially with anything released on any year ended in "1". |
porcupinetheater
02.15.21 | Oh shit haha, I totally started this on the worst possible years for your album project. See you in a decade, Dewi!
(Karma's the fucking best though it is truuuuee loooveee) |
Pangea
02.15.21 | Really cool idea porc! i'm planning on doing a couple of jazz discog runs this year (doing charles mingus right now), so i'm planning a jazz as well. Still really don't know anything so i'm excited to explore. I might join this |
porcupinetheater
02.15.21 | Please do! Throw a couple Mingus records in a side by side and let us tag along with you for a bit, if you care to! |
dedex
02.15.21 | Oi this is a real nice idea dude! imma sign up |

Pheromone
02.15.21 | I love this!! I am also a pretty lousy listener of jazz, but this is an incentive if any.
Ornette Coleman shape of jazz is actually genuinely probably my favourite jazz record so good job ruining my go, one week in. |
parksungjoon
02.15.21 | https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9oW5qojs_g
rest in peace :[ |
Pheromone
02.15.21 | Oh man I have shape of jazz on now and it brings back some rly good memories of where I was first getting into it, back when I was studying in Singapore, walking around in the blooming beautiful heat, getting pathetically and consistently lost, with some free jazz playing.
probably the most aesthetically pleasing my life will ever reach |
Pheromone
02.15.21 | oh man that is shitty timing
rip |
parksungjoon
02.15.21 | jam righteously and all is forgiven |
Pheromone
02.15.21 | i actually will, i actually will... added to digs
omg jamming karma now and 16 mins in of creator when all shit hits the fan i have transcended |
Pheromone
02.15.21 | god damn porc, karma is amazing |
porcupinetheater
02.15.21 | YESSS Phero, ugh, Karma might be my favorite jazz record, straight up.
And I'm sorry to steal SoJtC from right under your nose!! Does it help if I confess my intent was devious/malicious from the get-go?
But holy shit that sounds transcendent, losing yourself in new places to some insistent skronk. That's enough pleasing aesthetics for ten lives right there |
Pheromone
02.15.21 | for sure, smacked a 3.5 on it but i am sure it'll grow in due time
i neeeeeed to get some good earphones for these albums (and every other piece of music in the world tbf) |
Deez
02.15.21 | Sweet,
INNN |
porcupinetheater
02.15.21 | Proper, good earphones are a game changers. Been running my system, 7 or 8 years ago now, picked up the high end tin cans with a 2-year replacement warranty, been going back to the shop every year and 10 months or so, saying some bullshit about how they don't charge properly anymore, swapping them in and re-upping the warranty, boom. New headphones, upgraded tech for about $50 bucks each time. Lovely system
Welcome in, Deez, stoked to be j/-ing with ya! Slick Coltrane/Sanders drop, been meaning to check their live shit together |
Deez
02.15.21 | Its pretty madcap |
porcupinetheater
02.15.21 | Would expect nothing else from those jazz madmen (or is it mad jazzmen?) |
dedex
02.16.21 | Loved the Karma album. The yodelling is actually incredible. |
porcupinetheater
02.16.21 | You’ve heard of Modal Jazz, now get ready for Yodel Jazz!! |
Trifolium
02.16.21 | Going to listen to these tomorrow! Today is Haydn day. |

02.16.21 | 1 is really nice |
parksungjoon
02.17.21 | any jazzers |
Trifolium
02.18.21 | Going to listen to these NOW. |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | YESSSSS TRIF the spiritual space hornage in Karma = My Favorite Things
Wait a seccon |
Trifolium
02.18.21 | Dude that Coleman record is amazing! Really love how open it is, with so much room to breathe. The mix of my version (with a complete hard stereo split, sax in one channel, bass in the other) works wonders too. |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | Holy shit, is that a special remaster or something? |
Trifolium
02.18.21 | I don't know man! Just listening on Youtube haha!
https://youtu.be/Cpf99MZQhIM
|
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | LMAO I totally misread that as Coltrane and not Coleman, and thought it was some wild shit I missed on Favorite Things!! Yes, Shape of Jazz is such a cool produced record, heard somebody (on rym, maybe?) talk about how it doesn't really use chord instruments, and gives it a really sort of uniquely sparse feel |
Pangea
02.18.21 | Yeah it definitely has somewhat of a sparse feel while still blasting instruments in your ears, definitely get that vibe. I really like how each progresses as well. I see that free-jazz is mentioned a lot in regards to the shape of jazz, but to me the structure still feels purposeful, even if it may not be completely traditional (although idk enough about jazz to make that judgement probably) |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | Definitely agree with you on that, Pange, it always felt to me like something that held the door open for free jazz to really start exploring structureless/atonal pieces, without abandoning the more comfortable 50s style completely. One foot in the river, one on the shore and all that |
Trifolium
02.18.21 | "and gives it a really sort of uniquely sparse feel"
This 100%, lovely feeling. I look for that in many things. I've always had a less-is-more kind of attitude to many things in art (Man, that sounded conceited. I meant it though! Mondrian, Rothko, Newman in painting, Minimal Techno in music, etc.) |
Trifolium
02.18.21 | Pharoah is mega organic and I feel like I'm in a forest in summer. Super nice! |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | Oh, I feel you completely, Trif! I can get on board with maximalism more in music than most other things (having a million sound threads to parse really helps the ADD), but always love people figuring out the ways to use the least they're able to express something, way less to lose in the clutter |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | Think it was the Candiria drummer that got asked why he didn't use more than a bass/floor tom/snare/couple cymbals set-up if he was so good with the skins, and he said something like "I'll add more once I've mastered these," and that shit ReSoNaTeD |
ResidentNihilist
02.18.21 | Jan Garbarek - witchi-tai-to
Desireless is incredible. Garbarek took a two minute don cherry composition and expanded it out to ten minutes of sublime music |
Trifolium
02.18.21 | Dude that Candiria quote is awesome. Exactly right too. And I love maximalism as well haha, sometimes an overload of stuff can be incredible and perfect and exactly what I need. When done right though, minimalism can be so immensely impactful. There's just something hypnotizing and immediate and monolithic about it when it's done right. Like they've found some sort of truth or something. Hard to explain really.
But of course less minimal stuff is superb too. Speaking about that, this Pharoah dude surely knows how to go there haha! Not sure if the vox are always my thing, but I do really appreciate this one. It makes me feel this urge to sing along as weirdly and expressively, good thing that I'm working from home and that nobody's there but me and my potted plants!!! |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | I totally feel that, vocals definitely caught me by surprise the first time through! First brush I’d had with vocal jazz and then it acclimated and I floated off on bliss completely. Maximalism indeed lol!
Also speaking of unexpected vocals, just noticed for the first time now, in Lonely Woman of Shape of Jazz, like right after the 2:05 mark, buried way way way back in the mix, if you listen, you can just hear somebody go (woo!) and it’s the most adorable little thing |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | Oh wow they’re popping up all over eventually too! I might’ve just been listening with deaf ears! |
Trifolium
02.18.21 | "you can just hear somebody go (woo!) and it’s the most adorable little thing" yeah this was super nice, I love it when that happens. You just know the musicians were totally feeling it whenever these things pop up. It happens in a lot of Coltrane as well (I believe?).
That was a lovely experience porc, thanks for kicking this thing of with a bang! Loved both of them, for entirely different reasons. Jazz might just be the single best genre in music for me.
Can't wait for the following editions of this, but next week it's my turn! I've chosen my albums and provided a short description and links to the records in the spreadsheet. If you can post that list whenever you see fit I'd be eternally grateful porc 💕 |
dedex
02.18.21 | Good choices Trifo, I love both artists but haven't listened to these two particular records! |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | Absolutely! I’ll post that as soon as Sunday rolls around and compete with front page space with the MAAARCH MAAADNESSSS! And I’m so happy y’all are on board here, I’m with Trif, so excited to jam into some of these beautiful jazz rabbit holes! |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | Oh my gosh yessss Fela!!! |
Trifolium
02.18.21 | FELA!!!!!! 💖💖💖💖
And EVANS!!!!!! 💗💗💗💗 |
Pangea
02.18.21 | 2 really does rule hard yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah |
JokineAugustus
02.18.21 | 1 is amazing. I'm a jazz noob still. Been listening to the weird shit first. I really like Meditations and Out to Lunch. |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | Hell yeah Jokine, Out to Lunch is like a top 3 jazz record for me tbh
I would certainly mind if you joined us down on our little walk down Jazz street, popped those albums in on the sign up sheet for a week of your own, etc etc
When we’re walking down Jazz street, though, we HAVE to hold hands. The cars drive very quickly |
LeddSledd
02.18.21 | jazz amateur here as well
most of my experience is with old-school bop because my dad grew up in that era and introduced me to a fair bit of it. with all the Coltrane bumps recently I'm quite interested in hearing some more jazz this year. count me in |
someone
02.18.21 | right, so i'm hereby officially signing up. do i just go ahead and add my recs to the spreadsheet or what? |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | Absolutely! Just pop yourself into one of the open weeks and pop your shit into cruise control 😎 |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | And yay Ledd! Feel free to sign up for one of these weeks too, if you want to jam some of those old Poppa Bop records, or some new ones that really catch your eye, we all in this thing together j/ |
someone
02.18.21 | done-zo, Allonzo |
dedex
02.18.21 | yes please join everyone, i wanna jazz hard j/ |
porcupinetheater
02.18.21 | Shit yeah, someone, just saw Pharoah plays on that Alice Coltrane record too, color me stoked j/ |
someone
02.19.21 | The jazz scene is always so beautifully interlinked |
porcupinetheater
02.19.21 | No time for egos when there's modal scales to fucking RIP
btw, re your album C dealio, I capped the thing at 2 records so there's the possibility for comparisons and ties between albums for people to set up their own little jazz clinic without it being overwhelming to keep up with for the long-haul, but buddy if you want to toss that shit on there as a bonus for the people who want to keep up, jazz is about mf'ing freedom (and also ripping modal scales) |
Ryus
02.19.21 | 2 is fucking absurd |
porcupinetheater
02.19.21 | Gonna be forever stealing Trif's assessment in their album thread about Karma now
"A riot of living things!" like, perfect summary |
Ryus
02.19.21 | idk how i didnt hear it before. uh. what an oversight lol |
porcupinetheater
02.19.21 | Just saw your recent ratings, Ryus lol, are you the one who caused the Sleepytime Gorilla Museum furor? |
Ryus
02.19.21 | aha idk how much of a furor it was but i did confuse demon when i referred to it as sporkcore
on the topic of "karma" though im blown away. for some reason i think i kept getting it confused with lanquidity by sun ra so i thought i had already heard it |
porcupinetheater
02.19.21 | All fairness to demon I'm tossed into confusion every time someone reminds me sporks exist, regardless of context
I'm so so stoked people are digging Karma (not that a 4.3 avg poses a huge risk of controversial public assessment lol), one of the first albums to really help me start actively loving jazz, so so many spring nature walks with that thing |
Trifolium
02.19.21 | Best list idea ever porc!!! And so many of us are here now, yippeeeeeee!!! |
porcupinetheater
02.19.21 | I'm just so excited so many people are in here and signing up!! It's going to be so. Fucking. Cool. Getting these little snapshots into everyone's tastes and dipping into so many different styles, gah, STOKED |
Trifolium
02.19.21 | Yeah super hard agree, stoked 100%!!! |
Pheromone
02.19.21 | how would jazz rap (or more-so, jazz with someee rap) fit into the potential equation ? xo |
someone
02.19.21 | i just wanna make sure i get this thing right:
do we all get to listen to these recs (i mean i will anyway, whatever the rules) or are they mostly just for porc? |
Pheromone
02.19.21 | we all do - it is a community within a community |
Trifolium
02.19.21 | EDIT Oooops, Phero was Phaster: We all listen to them! Or at least, you can if you want to. I think he intended it as a collective listening session of two albums each week, where we could discuss them and chat and have fun etc.
And Phero I would be all for that actually. Does it have something to do with the thread you just bumped? |
Pheromone
02.19.21 | or, well, i assume // trif [2]
and heh, as long as you're referring to a certain nu-ja-bes and not mogwai (or, more abstractly the casual convo,) then it does |
Trifolium
02.19.21 | ALSO! Were we synchronised-posting again? |
Trifolium
02.19.21 | "as long as you're referring to a certain nu-ja-bes" 👌 |
Pheromone
02.19.21 | we were !! oh man 🥰🥰🥰 |
AnimalsAsSummit
02.19.21 | When you look at how many jazz albums have already dropped in 2021, really is the year of jazz |
dedex
02.19.21 | phephe and trifo bromance is my new fav thing |
porcupinetheater
02.19.21 | Yeah someone, we’re all a-bumping! The hope is that since Jazz is underbimped on the site sometimes, with a lot of empty threads and solo posting and what-not, if we’re all listening to some jazz, (and some of the same records at the same time at that!) that there’d be a consistent undercurrent of jazz talk on dear Sput this year |
dedex
02.19.21 | ^ doing the lord's work |
ResidentNihilist
02.19.21 | I repeat you need to hear Jan Garbarek's Witchi-tai-to specifically desireless, it's like pharoah sanders karma. It's fucking incredible https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7XuRItFyQPo |

Pheromone
02.19.21 | bromance [3] jazz [10] love [100]
excited to see my jazz horizon grow over the next year |
Trifolium
02.19.21 | Same!! So many cool records in the schedule already, and I know very few of them. |
Sunnyvale
02.19.21 | Just added myself to the spreadsheet, really nice idea @Trifolium, thanks! |
Trifolium
02.19.21 | Well, it was porc's idea, but thanks 🥰 |
Sunnyvale
02.19.21 | Haha, oops! Thanks Porc! |
zelenichajnik
04.01.21 | Jamming Shape of Jazz rn - wasn't feeling Lonely Woman or Eventually toooooooo much, at least on a first go. There's a LOT going on and it's quite disorienting. But Peace rolled around and oh baybee. I can absolutely use this as an entry point. Bliss. |
