02.28.21 | My pick for March (which I've placed on my birthday on March 7th) is "When It Rains" by Paramore. The Riot! album was very special to me -- it helped revive my passion for modern rock at a time when it was starting to wane. I love this band in general, but especially the Riot! and Brand New Eyes LPs.

03.02.21 | The Red Krayola - Jumbled messy beginning. Guy singing somewhere in the middle of traffic with the mic set up across the street. Traffic noise goes away, but the singer is still singing from a distance, now with factory noises serving as percussion. Ars loves dissonance. Diva, not so much. My theory is the production is there to disguise the fact that the song is kind of thin. At least it's not too long. I don't know. 2.3 |

I'm gonna be honest: her voice was so much better in the 70s. It sounds so fried on her 80s material. Musically the bass is fine, but everything else is kinda meh even that guitar solo. And the way that saxophone is being used is so 80s generic.

03.09.21 | Neurosis - Synthesized sound, almost like an old mellotron. Percussion kicks in in slow, deliberate fashion. Heavily enunciating male vocal. Not a bad start, which is a good thing, as this puppy clocks in at over eleven minutes long. OK, a bit of mournful wailing. Kind of hypnotic. Still not quite 5 mins in. Expecting some kind of change, and I think here it is. Quiet pulsing now. Tentacles crawling over my brain! Arghh! Arghh! Jk. Very quiet now, though - just vocals and sparse synth w/some weird sound effects thrown in (just heard a helicopter for a beat). Quiet part is getting a little draggy, though. Almost at 9 minutes now. I need coffee. And I think so do they. Oh, there we go. A quick explosion of sound, and we've kicked it back up to the songs original beat. Strong finish. Almost lost me for a minute, but overall a very creditable effort. 3.8 |

Nobody on Earth cares what I think of Neurosis, but here we go: cool atmosphere and drums so far. The vocals aren't really my thing, but not bad in a technical way. Surprisingly chill so for a metal song so far. This feels like an extended prog metal intro or something. Okay, now it's just boring. 1 wub looped and some vocals... oh no what the hell is that raspy voice. This part is excruciating. I hate it. The first half was fine.

03.11.21 | Right let's drop some badly constructed thoughts
Nina Nastasia - Lovely voice, quirky without being obnoxious and that orchestral swell was magical. I just wish it was longer and gave more impact to the decay of the track. The sitar was a pleasant addition that I wish got more airtime too. 3.5
Red Krayola - I didn't love the vocals being frank, but as late 60s proto-post-punk (can something be both proto- and post- ? Fuck knows) this was certainly interesting. 3.0
Piana - Wowee this is A LOT but I dig. Kinda like if Euaru-era Yanagi Nagi was a little more mature in construction. Maybe got a tiny bit messy at the end but I can forgive that. 4.0
Bread and Butter - Sir this got me groovin and shaking on a wet blustery day in England like I was strutting on an Okinawan beach. Ain't life changing, but fun doesn't have to be. 3.5
Coldplay - I was super interested at the start and a little bored at the end. Really liked the kinda off-kilter feeling of the start and Mr. Martin fit that well, but it became a little more business-as-usual as it went on. Far from the worst Coldplay though. 3.0
Coals - Hella peculiar. I got on pretty well with this, but wish it had another minute or so to play with. 3.5
Paramore - I wanted to give this a 3.5 or something but this has never been my favourite from Riot. It's a charming enough song though and Hayley sounds great as always. 3.0
Tina Turner - I wanted to give this a 3.0 or something but Tina and the relentless assault of cheesy synths made me grin too much to knock it. Also, probably the balls-out catchiest song on here so far, barring maybe that Bread & Butter song. 3.5
Neurosis - spent a long time playing around with atmospheres and textures and all that which was lovely, though I wish it made me 'feel' a little bit more than it did. Very well strung-together though. 3.5
XTC - It's XTC. Andy Partridge is an outstanding vocalist and those strings make me wanna swoon and do all kinda things. 4.0. |

2. Hurricane Fighter Plane - the beginning is a discordant mess that sounds like if anxiety were music but it gets better and is actually kinda fun. I don't really like how it ends tho. [3.2]
3. Borderless - It reminds me of a sad sci-fi anime and I am here for it [3.7]
4. Summer Blue - ah yes another Japanese one but gives me a different anime impression - like a slice of life kinda anime. It drags a little tho [3.3]
5. Rainy Day - not really a Coldplay fan. Just passing through. [2.5]
6. bitter cold - ooooo ASMR sounds gimme gimme [3.8]
7. When it Rains - liked a lot of paramore as a younger teen...but this is not a song I liked that much [3.0]
8. I Can't Stand the Rain - Instantly recognize this as "the 80s" but nothing remarkable [2.4]
9. The Eye of Every Storm - oh boy 11 minutes here we gooooooo. It starts off chugging and here I am hoping it's not this sleepy for 11 minutes. But hopes were dashed as it slows down even more and the lead singer groans loudly in my ear. When it starts back up its actually not bad, but I'm past the point of interest and it's still making me sleepy. [2.6]
10. Leva som snö - the vocalist screams like someone punched his puppy. Is that a compliment or a derogatory remark? Yes. [3.0]
11. 1000 Umbrellas - ooooh whimsical in lyrical theme and in sound arrangement! Very mood-swingy.[4.3]
12. When it Rain - I instantly like this. It kinda runs on the dude's flow which works for me. I can see people disliking the voice but I don't mind it. [4.7]
13. Hudsonviille, MI 1956 - it's not unpleasant but nothing really grabs me that much except that one part about a coffeemaker? [2.9]
14. Saturday Sun - how perfect that this song lands on a Saturday. Also damn, I know that voice but the rest of the song doesn't sound like Nick's trademark sound - it sounds more bluesy than the rest of his music and has a totally different vibe. Either way, nice. [3.8]

Some pleasant piano-driven folk. I like the addition of the vibraphone, very jazzy. This is cool and all, but it doesn't grab me as much as I would've hoped. I could see it being very nice within the flow of an album though.

Hurricane Fighter Plane - I just knew this was an Ars song, before seeing it was indeed you. Like the production and the instrumentation, the vox are a bit off to me. And it's very claustrophobic. 2.4
Borderless - Same as the above, but then for Johnny. It HAD to be YOU. Those drums are sweet. It's nicely diverse too. Airy vocals are nice as well. I just have to trust you that it is about the weather though... 3.3

03.14.21 | Bitter Cold - budgie once made me check this, I can clearly hear why. Like the layers in the production, those drums, the whispery vox, a very budgie song and a very 4.2
When It Rains - This is a very budgie track Diva. Why does everything make me think of our sweetie budgie poo? I miss him. 3.8 for this brings the feels and I feel like I'm a 90s chick flick princess now.
The Eye Of Every Storm - ford you know I recently started digging Neurosis and this track is a big reason why. Love it. Such a nice way to build the tension and so much room and space between the instruments and the vocalist is nice and reminds me of Mark Lanegan and this certainly is a 4.4 at least.
Leva Som Sno - I really don't like these kind of vocals. It sounds like this guy has a really hard life, and he can start crying any second, but then all the time. Some of the leads are nicely twinkly though... 1.4
1000 Umbrellas - I like the rainy sound, they mimic it nicely here. Oh misery!!! This guy still has a more enjoyable life than then Sno one, but it still is kind of... miserable... It is a bit too intense in the vox 2.6

Mid-tempo guitar. Vocal seems low in the mix - is that my computer? I guess this is the vocalist from Swans? Confused me, I was expecting a guy. I don't know, these guys aren't doing it for me. Picked up a little as the song went on, but still not my thing. 2.7 |

03.20.21 | OK, what do we have today. Hmm. A bit early in the day for Slayer, and that's never been my favorite style of music, but let's have a go.
Slayer - "Raining Blood" huh? That seems a bit aggressive for before 9AM. Crash of thunder, hint of electric guitar. Ok, now there's some guitar in earnest, with more thunder in the background. Somewhere, Beavis & Butthead are shaking their heads and screaming, "Yeah!" Typical metal vocals. Several changes in speed. I don't know. They're all worked up, but I just can't get into it. 2.4 |
rifkadm
03.21.21 | 19. Storm Comin' on - song starts off strong but the voice is a little too weird for me. I like the way the beat and percussion sounds, but I don't like how it seemed like it was gonna end somewhere in the middle and then started up again, chugging along until it drones out at the end. [2.7]
20. Raining Blood - I love heavy music, I really do. BUT I've never really liked Slayer - at least not for their own sake. Their songs, this included, are more like mosh tunes that are aggro and over the top noisy to hype up an audience. You need to be in the pit or crowdsurfing at a large venue packed with TONS of people to really get the appeal. This would *slay* at the Aftershock Festival and if this were a measure of that I'd give it 5/5. But while sitting here at my computer in my bedroom? Meh, not my kind of heavy. [2.8] |

20. Raining Blood - with this slayz hard (m/ m/ m/), there is a sudden cut in this song. Just because you cut to rain sounds instead of the next track, doesn't make it not a heinous crime Slayer. 3.8 - 0.5 = 3.3

03.22.21 | Prayers For Rain - Aye it's a classic and I haven't heard this in +10 years and it's actually not as good as I remembered but it's still The Cure. Nice rec, rifk. 3.8/5
Summer Breeze - This and Raining Blood are by far my most listened songs this week. I grew up with the uncensored version though, which has better lyrics. 4.5/5
Jesu - Hmm this was actually fairly bad, can't even smack a 2.8 on it. And did my speakers break or is this really badly produced? 2/5
Raining Blood - Another childhood classic. This album got me seriously into metal. Song brings many sweet memories of headbanging with my friends through the years. Especially the riff after 'your time slips away' must have generated more global headbanging than any other music part. 5/5
Under The Folding Branches - I like the strings and the whiskers. But that vocalist dude, man. I'm not happy to see my son growing up thinking this is a good singer. 3/5 |

03.22.21 | "Talk About the Weather"
I like the abrasive guitar, and the vocals are pretty cool. This is certainly catchy in a good way. It's a simple song, so I don't have much else to say, other than that everything here works well.
4/5
"Southern Cloud"
The riff's cool, but the vocals are meh. I don't like the chorus at all. Some good elements, some bad ones. It about evens out.
3/5
"Prayers for Rain"
This makes me think of walking in a scary mine with only a flashlight to guide me. A slow buildup so far. The strings are cool, the atmosphere is cool, but it's missing something for me. It's almost too out there in outer space, I can't quite place it. Decent enough I guess.
3/5
"Summer Breeze"
Oh damn, there's some extreme metal roaring. Now it's just doomy vocals with happy lyrics. Unexpected, but I guess it's fine. Ugh, this fine, but about it. I'm giving out the same score a lot today.
3/5
"Storm Comin' On"
Weirdly mixed vocals. They're not trying to ASMR me right? The beeping and drums are cool. This is kinda weird in a good way, but I can't place why. Maybe it's all the other boring songs I just listened to, but this stood out. The production is bad though.
3.2/5
"Raining Blood"
BRUTAL RIFF AND DRUMZ BRO. SUCH AN INDESPUTABE CLASSIC RIGHT? DO YOU EVEN TRASH BRO? I MEAN THRASH... but seriously I don't like the vocals, the guitar, the drums, or thrash in general. +.5 for not sounding as ugly and lame as Metallica??? Thrash bad except maybe like 88-95 Ministry, but even then... take all the industrial elements out and it'd be as bad as this. Slayer should've tried industrial.
2/5
"Under the Folding Branches"
This is fine, the cello brightens up what maybe would be dull otherwise. Simple enough.
3/5
"Deeper Down"
Not digging the drums or vocals. Doom metal yeah, whatever. No real qualms with it beyond extreme boredom.

03.23.21 | The Walkmen - Distant organ, then some tentative piano. Vocal comes right in after that. So far, just a voice accompanied by piano. Slow to mid-tempo. Funny - the video just showed a quick flash of a guy strumming a guitar, but I can't hear any. Maybe they forget to turn his speaker on. Oops, there's that slow one note on the organ again. Song must be over. Kind of purdy. 3.1 |

03.26.21 | "While I Shovel the Snow"
Is this a Bob Dylan impersonation with the vocals? This is fine, but I can't say anything is jumping out at me.
3/5
"Rain"
A classic mellow psych-pop song by The Beatles. Lennon's lyrics are always really cool. It's all about how people are never happy even with opposite circumstances and how he's not like that, he's happy either way. Apparently the "can you hear me" part is about acid. I like the guitar, the backmasking, and the production A LOT. Ringo said this was his favorite Beatles song.
5/5
"Rain Come Down"
Good bass, horrible vocals, mixed percussion (I like the metallic clicking, but not the trap snares.) This is one of those radical neutral tracks where the elements are a mix of amazing and horrible aaaah.
2.5/5
"Weather Storm"
Let's be real, this song defines what good instrumental downtempo should be. Good bass, good piano, a chill atmosphere. Sure, it kind of reminds me of the Knuckles level Death Chamber, but that's okay. I like how it sounds like rain in the background with that rattling.

Some guy is talking over his vocals. Rude! Guess this was their next-to-last album. America has too many bands like this. Now they're playing a lot of guitar. They're saying, "Die! Die! 03.30.21 | Storms - Sweet, but a bit too country for me. 3.2/5
Adverse Weather Conditions - I like the lyrics but they sound so detached and joyless. And the song finds it really hard to end. 2.8/5
Floods - Troll rec! Once when I was a young idealist and still kinda blown away by Far Beyond, I tried hard to like this. It never really worked. The guitar sound is annoying, Phil sounds annoying, drums and bass do nothing. The song structure is too ambitious for Pantera and instead of being heavy it just drags for 7 minutes. Also wtf those solos are worse than I remembered.
I obv have some unresolved trauma thanks to this album. I'll give it a generous 2.8/5
Hurricane Waves - Forgive me [b]esus but Meh 2.8/5 |

03.30.21 | 1. On Teasing - Nina Nastasia - oh that accordian is so nice. This feels like a lot of modern sadgirl indie folk, but like... better, and I already like sad girl indie. Immediate save within the first minute. Oh, I adore how this song flourishes.
3.8
2. Hurricane Fighter Plane - The Red Crayolas - This feels VERY 80's.... oh it is a 60's song wtf. The mish mash of noises are the best part here, the vocals are very glam/post punk though interestingly enough. Not my favorite, but this is a really cool and unique find.
3.4
3. Borderless - Piana - I don't even need to look at the list to tell you who rec'd this. But this is some really lovely noise pop. Loving the glitch. It has been a very long time since i heard this artist, so it may not be an appropriate comparison, but this reminds me of a more bombastic Tujiko Noriko.
3.5
4. Summer Blue - Bread and Butter - Mm that beat. Oh this is really pleasant. That choooorus, oh my god. This is so good.
3.9
5. Rainy Day - Coldplay - I just don't get coldplay I guess. The strings are very nice at least. Nothing offensive or bad, just nothing captivating. Kinda fun.
2.7
6. bitter cold - Coals - smooth, nice, infectious.
3.1
7. When it Rains - Paramore - Williams stans RISE UP. Not one of my favorites on Riot, but it is still pretty good. Hayley's vocals are excellent here.
3.5
8. I Can't Stand the Rain - Tina Turner - this is weirdly lowkey. I like the blast of horns, feels very 80's pop. The vocals are fine, but not my cup of tea. I like the amazingly 80's synth lines 1:45 in a lot. I like rain though so.
3.0
9. They Eye of Every Storm - Neurosis - I mean, it is Neurosis so it is obviously amazing. The long somber build up is to die for, very mellow pay off in post metal terms, but I can't help but love it.
4.2
10. Leva Som Sno - Vi Som Alskade Varandra sa Mycket - what a mouthful. Those harsh vox are great, instrumentally this is some grand skramz. In the skramz world this is a totally digestible track, which is far from being a bad thing. I need to hop on this band soon, cause this is excellent.

03.30.21 | "Cruel Wind"
Shoegazy guitar so far, and very airy dreamy vocals. Not particularly interesting, but it is pleasant. This fairly generic, but at least it's generic in a genre that doesn't offend the ear.
3.2/5
"Storms"
I like the guitar tone, and Stevie's voice is pretty here. Something about this feels country, maybe the tempo, maybe the backups, whatever it is, it works. I actually like this, it's simple and effective.
3.9/5
"Due to Adverse Weather Conditions, All My Heroes Have Surrendered"
Great guitar, nice horns, okay vocals. This band sounds like it's trying to be late 90s early 2000s Flaming Lips, but is doing a WAY better job. Eat your heart out Wayne Coyne. Not my favorite, but it works.
3.7/5
"Floods"
Kinda like grunge but heavier? I guess I don't hate this, but it feels oddly cheesy. That guitar is so Nirvana though. Wait, now it's gotten thrashier. Kind of boring, but not terrible and the bass is decent.
3/5
"Hurricane Waves"
Pet Sounds? I don't see it, but it's fine I guess. Wait there's the pop-punk vocal. Is it because it's about surfing? Wouldn't that be more early Beach Boys? I do not like these vocals and the okay instrumental backing isn't making up for it though the guitar isn't bad.

17. Prayers for Rain - The Cure - 5 seconds in and it is already moody af. This is The Cure doing The Cure.
4.1
18. Summer Breeze - Type O Negative - Big throwback band. Vox are a acquired taste, but the heavy as bricks guitar and synths really carry the melody
3.3
19. Storm Comin' On - Jesu - Pleasant.
3.5
20. Raining Blood - Slayer - I mean... it's raining blood. This is some of the best music thrash has to offer - fuck that- what METAL has to offer. Those riffs are iconic, that buildup is pure tension, that payoff is perfect. This is a perfect song.

03.31.21 | @ArsMoriendi I always just thought it was a very strange thrash balad, but I can see it! |

Divaman
03.31.21 | >Alright I should’ve done what you guys did by listing your thoughts on each track not just simply rating them
You don't have to, but it's good to at least call it out here so the host knows to go check the worksheet in order to update. |

03.31.21 | >Metal heads don't wanna admit it, but that song is grunge as fuck, just heavier
That's racist. Also I gladly admit it. |
Divaman
03.31.21 | Bomb the Music Industry - Early Jeff Rosenstock. OK. He's a little scary when he moves into his high range. But not bad, and he doesn't wear you out with the length of the song. 3.3 |
nol
03.31.21 | yeah the pantera song was super nirvana. especially the weird fuzzed out guitar. |
YoYoMancuso
03.31.21 | Hurricane Waves - never liked this band which is strange because i love Jeff's solo albums 2.5 |

03.31.21 | Hurricane Fighter Plane - Album's full of bloomingly odd what-have-you's, but this one's never been one of my favourites. Sounds like a psychedelic tantrum. Them noises in the instrumental middle still rad tho 3.2
Borderless - Scratch-scratch burbles beneath lullaby keys, fuckin' A, wordless sigh bridge/dance 180 is dope. 3.8
Summer Blue - City pop has an auto 3.5 minimum. Ain't my favorite in the style, but it's still swell so we hitting right there, 3.5
Rainy Day - Yeah sorry, can't stand this whole era of Coldplay, never got the Viva la Vida love. This falls more on the bland side than the outright noxious side, though, steps up. Chris Martin plz stop coming over to my house 2.0
bitter cold - Ooh super cool the way it reclarifies the rhythm a couple times in the first few seconds. Doesn't do much after that though 2.8
When it Rains - Yep there is the nostalgia 3.0
I Can't Stand the Rain - Fucking bangs you know the deal, that synth flare after the title drop mmm 3.9
The Eye of Every Storm - Biggest track from best Neurosis album = do tha math. Here I'll help 5.0
Leave some Snow - Not one of my favorites from Vi Som, but it's still Vi Som. 3.7
1000 Umbrellas - This is so harmonically complex woah 4.5
When it Rain - Whole record's a panic attack in the best way 4.4
Hudsonville - Jordan draws too much of the La Dispute conversation. Lyrics overhyped, vocals do what they need to. Rest of the band is great, tight as hell 3.8
Saturday Sun - Pre-Pink Moon Nick Drake is top tier afternoon reading on your porchcore 4.3
Let's Talk About the Weather - I want to take you out and get you wet 😜 3.3 |

04.01.21 | Southern Cloud - Love Empty Country, but this one's always seemed unobtrusive in the tracklist 3.5
Prayers for Rain - Massive rainy swells, it's great, The Cure is great, Seventeen Seconds thru Pornography is > 4.1
Summer Breeze - Love Peter Steele's Jock status at Goth high, picking on all the DweebGoths. Song balances warm and cold atmospheres real nice 3.7
Storm Comin' On - Jarboe fuck me right up, steals the show from under Justin's nose 3.5
Raining Blood - Thrash. 6.66/10. 3.3
Under the Folding Branches - Finn Andrews makes music so that when he eventually dies, people can look back at the last record he made and go "woah, it's like he totally *knew* 4.2
Deeper Down - MDB is great f y'all 3.8
While I Shovel the Snow - Saw these dudes open for Fleet Foxes back in the day, never been able to get into it. It's aight, conjures a certain image or two 2.9
Rain - All about the bassline, but john can get lost on this one 2.4
Rain Come Down - Nice job holding an inner tension between the blown out bass and skittering rhythm and more melodic treated vocal. 3.5 |

Pangea
04.02.21 | 23. While I shovel the Snow - this is boring and the vocals are bad
24. Rain - cool bassline yeah but everything else is just kinda okay. very middling for a beatles track. 3.2
25. Rain Come Down - Ohh i really like this! nice beat, the chorus is cool and the sort of flute-y (synth?) is really nice as well. 4.0
26. Weather Come Down - this is cool and i'm super lame for not checking massive attack properly. 4.3 |
Pangea
04.02.21 | 27. Cruel Wind - nice and catchy gazey dream pop. yeah i really like this. 4.2
28. Storms - this is a nice song 3.5
29. Due to Adverse Weather Conditions, All My Heroes Have Surrendered - band/song rules. love the sort of antiquated atmosphere they create here. 4.5
30. Floods - I can't decide whether i like or dislike this song so i'll give it most neutral rating i can think of. 2.8
31. Hurricane Waves - I really enjoy jeff's solo stuff, but I haven't been able to get into any of the btmi songs i heard and this didn't change that. 2.5 |
Divaman
04.02.21 | Have you got a score for 23 Pangea? |
