09.17.21 | Some nice stuff here mate. I’m considering that KID A MNESIA nonsense as well. Gimmicky as fuck and I’ve always though Amnesia was a bit shit but it’d be nice to have. |
wham49
09.17.21 | regarding Motorhead, I do dig those albums, but overkill, will always be their best IMO |
Hyperion1001
09.17.21 | yeah ive been less and less enamored with vinyl as the years go by. its so fucking expensive when you can get a tape or CD for < $10 and they both sound better.
kinda pissed at myself for selling my CD collection back in college. |
zakalwe
09.17.21 | Tape definitely doesn’t sound better than vinyl. Absolutely no chance. |
Hyperion1001
09.17.21 | its all subjective dude so to me it does.
vinyl distortion is cracks and pops and horrible static, which pisses me the fuck off. tape distortion is a smooth, warm, fuzzy hiss, which sounds so much better.
neither sound as good as CD's.
vinyl was phased out for a reason. |

09.17.21 | Love that local h is still making cover albums. Tempted to see them later this month but I’d have to call out of work to go, and I’ve been calling out a shit ton since I got vaxxed |
grannypantys
09.18.21 | uh oh
i'm about to turn this into an anti-vax thread |

09.18.21 | " its so fucking expensive when you can get a tape or CD for < $10 and they both sound better."
not sure how you listen to music but a well made vinyl will sound better than anything ever. Your ears are used to the compressed sound of CD,
most new vinyl and well made vintage albums are something to sit and sip 3 fingers of Scotch to, tape and cd's were made to throw into your car on the way to the bar. Anybody listen to an 8track lately, talk about sounding like shit
but yes new vinyl is ridiculously expensive, live in the 70's like me and you can get killer stuff for 10 bucks or less
|
Hyperion1001
09.19.21 | CD’s aren’t compressed. masters are compressed, which will be apparent on any medium. 24bit/192khz is objectively the most accurate sound reproduction technology we have. now granted, cd’s are only 44khz but the human ear cannot possibly tell the difference between the two.
vinyl is inherently a lower quality format because it is impossible to eliminate base distortion which is inevitably going to degrade the sound. what people describe as “vinyl warmth” is literally distortion, which, as I just said, is a degradation in quality.
vinyl will never be as accurate as digital, and to argue the case is to fundamentally misunderstand audio technology. |

09.19.21 | Between prices going up, and me living in the end of the world so getting destroyed by shipping expenses and delays I almost gave up on collecting.
This is a nice haul dude. |

It's hard to deny the satisfaction of having a sweet sweet artwork on bigger display tho
I had Nightfall and Sin After Sin vinyl. Both got left at my ex's house. |

09.19.21 | Pre orders are a nightmare at the moment too. Just keep getting out back and out back. So soon ppl will just say fuck it.
' but nothing sounds better to me than when needle hits wax'
Fucking ey |

09.19.21 | My band's vinyl also got delayed 5 months, preorder hell. Seems to be due to big bands putting back catalogue on vynil, regardless that it was recorded digitally, the whole industry is about to collapse honestly, and I hope then dem hipsters switch to CD so prices go down again to old standards dammit. |

09.19.21 | I've been finding better deals lately than I have for some time. Got the black album remastered for 6 bucks brand new a couple weeks ago from the evil amazon. To each their own |
Hyperion1001
09.19.21 | @Dedes oh absolutely, I have a pretty sizable record collection, and I still buy vinyl. all I’m arguing against is this notion that somehow vinyl is the purest audio medium when that just isn’t the case. i collect all physical media because I like physical media lol. |
wham49
09.19.21 | listen to a beatles album on cd then vinyl
or dark side of the moon on both and you tell me what sounds better, not a grage sale print of the album a fresh NM copy
that tinny sound from Cd's is not supposed to be there everythign sounds like a drum machine, which hey may be more "pure" but still sounds like shit to me |

09.20.21 | I think it all comes down to the recording process of the album. Old albums, before DAWs existed when everything was recorded analog, on tape, it's gonna sound way better on vynil. The problem nowadays is that mostly everything is recorded digitally which sounds better on CD obviously, but since the vynil fever has been out of control for years and it's the first time in many years that labels, indie or not, are making some cash, everyone, from labels to collectors just ignores this fact because in the end, vynil format is visually more appealing.
My 2 cents though, I could be wrong but this is what I've seen these last years. |
wham49
09.20.21 | makes sense to me, if your recording something for one medium it might not sound as good as another. Analog doesnt play on cd, and digital doesnt play on analog
|
Hyperion1001
09.20.21 | that’s just not true. an uncompressed 24bit/192khz digital file, even of an analog master, is objectively the highest quality representation of the original master than any other format. I don’t really know how else to explain this, you’re just gonna have to read for yourselves.
everything you’re saying about vinyl is purely subjective experience and nostalgia. |
grannypantys
09.21.21 | @wham
overkill is top 5 for sure |

09.21.21 | blind hearing test i bet no one could spot the difference between a first press vinyl copy of aja and a steve hoffman 84 cd |

09.21.21 | BS Hyperion, anything anybody does is subjective anyway
and like all research that is very subjective are you reading research from somebody who is benefitting from the info your giving me, probably
like reading Republicans research on how Mask do not help stop the virus |

09.21.21 | lmao that comparison makes exactly zero sense. since you apparently have a hard time doing a simple google search, lemmie help you out. this is literally the second result my man.

09.21.21 | this is from your article dude
"Because of this trend, the vast majority of commercial music releases became embroiled in a completely unnecessary “loudness war,” that forced them to increase loudness to remain competitive with contemporary releases. It became noticeable that the increased use of compression and limiting resulted in a loss of detail and nuance in the end product. This state of affairs was criticized by prominent audio engineers and is often quoted as an argument in vinyl’s favor. Some people prefer vinyl for this reason: music properly mastered for the medium is fairly immune to the effects of the loudness war, meaning proper dynamics are left somewhat intact on releases carefully mastered for vinyl." |
wham49
09.21.21 | read the last 3 lines |
Hyperion1001
09.21.21 | yeah I knew you were going to highlight that, because it has absolutely nothing to do with the issue at hand. we’re not talking about mastering and the loudness war, we’re talking about the fundamentals of audio technology. i already stated that a shitty master is going to sound shitty in any format, which is exactly what your quote is saying. just because digital and mobile platforms ushered in bad mastering practices has absolutely nothing to do with whether or not vinyl records are able to reproduce sound more accurately than uncompressed digital files.
the highest quality recording you can get is the original analog master tapes, or the original master WAV files. but, again, we’re not talking about original masters, we’re talking about MASS PRODUCED CONSUMABLE FORMATS. everything in that article backs up what I’m saying.
but, at the end of the day, it doesn’t really matter. if you want to continue to be wrong and listen to original pressings of CCR the rest of your life that’s your prerogative. |
wham49
09.21.21 | I am also highlighting the loss of nuance and detail
Why would losing nuance and detail be a better recording,
And who gives a shit about “Technically better” if your worried about technical you should find another hobby
Hey just cause I’m old doesn’t mean I dig CCR, that’s bullshit |
