Rules

3.2–BEST TRACKS: Mis, Rules, Master

never spent as much time with this one since this is probably the only alex g release where nothing really sticks out to me here. it's all pleasant and listenable, but every other alex release has at least a few songs that i really love.

Beach Music

3.5–BEST TRACKS: Kicker, Bug, Brite Boy

this one also suffers from some consistency issues for me, but like all other alex albums, there are some terrific tunes, particularly "kicker." for some reason this just never hit me like the others overall though.

Rocket

3.6–BEST TRACKS: Powerful Man, Proud, Poison Root

i appreciate what he was going for on this one since it was definitely time to switch up his sound, but it doesn't all mesh together on Rocket. this is probably his most inconsistent album overall, in terms of both sound and quality, so i hardly ever listen to this one front to back. there are some real gems on here, though, like "poison root," "proud," "bobby," and "powerful man."

Trick

4.0–BEST TRACKS: Forever, Mary, Memory

i almost put Trick as high as second on this list but it just didn't feel right. indeed it does have some of alex's best songs like "forever" and "mary," i can't help but feel like DSU is just a better version of this one. they have a similar aesthetic, but Trick is a little more playful–which sometimes doesn't really work. i'm not too crazy about the goofier songs like "kute" and "whale" since they kinda lost their charm after the first few listens.

RACE

4.1–BEST TRACKS: Gnaw, Crab, The Same

alex's debut work is charmingly amateurish from the production to his boyish vocals. but the childish charm is part of what made most of his early work so compelling, so it's not a knock at all–in fact, it makes RACE one of his best works overall. "gnaw" is certainly in his top 5 best songs.

DSU

4.2–BEST TRACKS: Serpent is Lord, Icehead, After Ur Gone

this was tough, but DSU takes the second spot of the list. alex continues his penchant for cute, lo-fi ditties with a lot of emotion. whether he's singing about his dog, black hair, or love, DSU's songs are catchy and succinct earworms that probably form his most cohesive album front-to-back. this one has a bit of a heavier sound on tracks like "serpent is lord" and it works amazingly well.

House of Sugar

4.4–BEST TRACKS: Gretel, Hope, Cow

try as i might, i couldnt in good conscience put anything but house of sugar in the number one slot. continuing the trend from "rocket," house of sugar is bolder than much of his early music, but he doesn't lose any of his charm. "house of sugar" is simultaneously comforting and strange, with some of alex's best songs yet "gretel" is the perfect indie track and maybe my favorite rock song of the entire decade.
