10.31.21 | My pick this month is:
The Fixx - Red Skies (from the album Shuttered Room)
"Red Skies"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZCM4_5uB1ww
Perhaps The Fixx's best song, and one of the outstanding songs of the '80s.
|
ArsMoriendi
10.31.21 | Yo La Tengo - "Black Flowers" (from I Am Not Afraid of You and I Will Beat Your Ass)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OgdDhGeIOI
One of the prettiest trombones ever. |
porcupinetheater
10.31.21 | Wovenhand - Dirty Blue (from Mosaic)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bmMztlkOAg
Incredible liminal vibe. One of my forever faves |
Trifolium
10.31.21 | Ben Khan - The Green (from Ben Khan)
https://youtu.be/QzwTvwoLLC4
Gooooood tune. Lots of the green-ing in it too. |
Ryus
10.31.21 | bladee - redlight moments

11.01.21 | Widow coming through with a classic, good luck topping that. |
SlothcoreSam
11.01.21 | K, I'm gonna go with one of my favorite bands.
Sublime- Scarlet Begonias
Off 40 Oz. to Freedom
https://youtu.be/Cr0L-8uCYlw |
Divaman
11.01.21 | Actually, that brings up a good point. I'm not sure if you realized this widow, but we had "Golden Brown" just a few months ago. In April, it was rec'd for SOTD by farmerobama. I'm not going to forbid it, but you might want to think about coming up with a new rec, since this one was used within the last 6 months. |
widowslaugh123
11.01.21 | Oh shit didn’t realize that ok I’ll think of something else |
Divaman
11.01.21 | OK. |
fogza
11.01.21 | Ok, Pina Kollars - Dark Blue and Gold. https://music.youtube.com/watch?v=zcXW-p7Lpi8&feature=share |
Pangea
11.01.21 | Lots of options for this theme, but you know what, let's dance!
Disclosure (Ft AlunaGeorge) - White Noise https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bkk2H3Ztrfk (from Settle) |
fogza
11.01.21 | 1. The Fixx: Red skies - Kinda skirts the line for me but I could see past some of the more dated elements like the synth riff sound and bassy chanting, not to mention the almost guitar solo (actually kind of dig that they bailed on it before it really gets going). 3.4 |
dedex
11.01.21 | Jazz Liberatorz - Blue Avenue
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFs03oAx9ME

Divaman
11.01.21 | I hate it when people add albums to the database but don't bother to add the tracks. Lazy mfers. |
SlothcoreSam
11.01.21 | 1. Red Skies. 3.0 that vocalist was trying way too hard with the camera, but I like his voice. The rest of the sound was 80s, which may have been good at the time, but outdated big time now. |
SlothcoreSam
11.01.21 | I should really change my song to Eiffel 65's classical masterpiece, Blue (Dabadee) the mega extended remix.
But I don't hate you all. |
Drifter
11.01.21 | Songs: Ohia - Coxcomb Red
Album: The Lioness
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DW5Cm1wDtbY
Jason Molina was such a brilliant songwriter and for me this song is my favorite of all time lyrically. So beautiful and one I will always wish I had wrote. |
Divaman
11.01.21 | Sam, I LOVE "Blue (Dabadee)." |
SlothcoreSam
11.01.21 | Wha? I didn't think anyone likes that song, I'll contemplate it if we get to 2nd recs.

someone
11.01.21 | Bowie's Blackstar is a bit of a punch below the belt i think, so i'll go for something a little easier |
Divaman
11.01.21 | It would certainly be a permissible pick. Do you feel it's below the belt because it's so well regarded? |
someone
11.01.21 | one heck of an overplayed track, but a serious banger nonetheless
I Monster - Daydream in Blue (off Neveroddoreven)

11.02.21 | 2. Yo La Tengo: Black Flowers - Sweet little song, really pretty. 4 |
madrigal30
11.02.21 | cursive -- some red-handed sleight of hand is my rec for the month |
SlothcoreSam
11.02.21 | Yo Diva, it's because of that chorus, oh and the versus. And cus it was overplayed at all the nightclubs I used to frequent back in the day. |
Divaman
11.02.21 | 2. Yo Lo Tengo - had a whole write up, but Sputnik ate it. Oh well. 3.1 |
someone
11.02.21 | why'd you enter my rec wrong, Diva?
you left out "in Blue" |
Divaman
11.02.21 | Damn, you caught me. I was deliberately trying to undercut you and ruin your life.
OK, fixed. |
ArsMoriendi
11.02.21 | @Divaman tell me :o I wanna know |
Divaman
11.02.21 | I just basically described the sounds as they were happening and said the song was OK. It wasn't Shakespeare or anything - I just hate to go through the trouble of describing something only to have Sputnik eat it. (Although to be fair, it was likely my own stupid fault - I must have forgotten to hit Submit before I went up and edited the list to include fogza's and my scores for your song.) |
haesslichermensch
11.02.21 | Had to correct this one .. but one of my all time autumn classics

SlothcoreSam
11.02.21 | 2. Black Flowers. 4.1. That was probably the best song I've heard featuring a euphonium. |
fogza
11.03.21 | 3. Wovenhand: Blue Pail Fever - I dig all the 16 Horsepower and Wovenhand I've heard, and this is no exception. 4.5 |
dedex
11.03.21 | yolo tengo lmao |
dedex
11.03.21 | 1. Red Skies - fun lil early 80s track with the post-punky guitars and the cheesy synths. It always work on me. 3.7
2. Black Flowers - simply lovely. 4.0
3. Wovenhand - well it's a very beautiful song that i like. 4.1 |
Divaman
11.03.21 | 3. Wovenhand - Echoey, humming noises. Soon becomes nicely strummed guitar, w/low-pitched male vocals. Kind of dark. I think I like these guys. I'll have to give them more of a listen. 3.4 |

11.03.21 | 3. Blue Pail Fever. 3.0 Sounds like a cross between Alt - J and another band I can't think of. Not bad, but doesn't go in the direction I was hoping. |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.03.21 | yikes forgot to submit um um um um um Diva can you put me as a placeholder with

11.04.21 | 4. Ben Khan: The green - I wasn't feeling this on first listen but enough there to grab me for a second try. Actually pretty decent, 3.5 |
Koris
11.04.21 | Well, this one will be topical for me!
My submission is Steely Dan - Your Gold Teeth II (yes, it's the second of a duology, but both songs are completely different)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QzAJqKll6hI
This was the song that got me into the Dan and prompted me to do their entire discog because of its fantastic mix of rock and jazz fusion. As I've said before, big thanks to sonic for getting me into their work! |
dedex
11.04.21 | 4. The Green - heyo this swee didn't expect the post-jazz additions nice. 3.8 |
Divaman
11.04.21 | 4. Ben Khan - Strange, blunted music. Then it gets all jazzy. Not to my taste. 2.3 |
Scheumke
11.04.21 | Alright imma go with a classic for this month and I'll let you choose. It's either going to be Gabriel's Red Rain or Type O's Red Water. First one here can pick ;) |
Ryus
11.04.21 | hmm both great tunes lemme take peter gabriel tho |
Scheumke
11.04.21 | Peter Gabriel it is. Will post the full thing with link tomorrow :) |
Divaman
11.04.21 | I'm glad. I almost picked that one myself. |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.04.21 | 1. Red Skies: wow i almost missed the title lyric. this is saved from plainness by wavy guitarfeedbackreverb so diva is a hypocrite and i'm taking half a point off 2.7
2. Black Flowers: Awww haven't heard this in ages, cute track and probably a pinch underrated? YLT have so many socially awkward deadpan songs that I always appreciate when they go all-out sentimental yay. 3.9
3. Blue Pail Fever: yeah porc can you straight up replace sowing as sput's country spamking thank you, will maybe check this bring back broselit bone 3.7

Ryus
11.05.21 | this month im going for lowest rated song |
Storm In A Teacup
11.05.21 | 1. Red Skies at Night I thought this had a lot of potential at first but I didn’t start seeing it realized until about the 2:20 mark. Then the song had its best moments. Idk reminds me of 80s Yes some. Didn’t achieve the heights I thought it might, but I thought it was much better than just decent. Solid 3.6/5 |
Storm In A Teacup
11.05.21 | Saved by Zero > Red Skies At Night |
Storm In A Teacup
11.05.21 | 2. Black Flowers This song teetered being either on the edge of greatness or on the edge of having too much a sad vibe. Never heard of this band. If they have more positive vibe music I’d fall in love. Sad vibes takes away a whole 1.0 from the rating. 3.5/5 |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.05.21 | okay okay but for REAL, not having [been able to remember having] heard of yo la tengo [which you absolutely have done at whichever point] is the essential of an imaginative reality i am shook |

11.05.21 | 5. Bladee: Red light moments - Trap really has become the music of choice for meme artists. 1.8 |

JohnnyoftheWell
11.05.21 | yeah but did he write those words in his head 9 hours ago i didn't think so |

11.05.21 | 5. Bladee - Synths, and the guy is actually singing. He's not Pavarotti, mind you, but he's singing. I don't know, Ryus, I might actually be your champion for the round. Or if you really are trying to get a super low score, I might be messing you up again. 2.8 |

11.06.21 | Where'd my comments go? I listened up to day 5 and left comments |
ArsMoriendi
11.06.21 | I guess I'll quickly summarize instead...
"Red Skies"
Boring 80s cheese.
2.6/5
"Blue Pail Fever"
Decent indie-folk that builds.
3.6/5
"The Green"
Good music, with a distracting voice trying too hard to be sexy.
3.2/5
"Redlight Moments"
Boring incarnate.
2.5/5 |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.06.21 | are you implying that the SOTD threads have developed antibodies against your takes :O |
ArsMoriendi
11.06.21 | No I'm implying that the SOTD threads did your mom |
Storm In A Teacup
11.06.21 | 6. Little Green Bag this song is chill also boring but also alright 3.1/5 |
Storm In A Teacup
11.06.21 | I lost 3.5 gs of green and found my green bag in a gas station parking lot. I still remember it was one of the closest parking spots to the quick trip door. Was so happy to get high after that. |
fogza
11.06.21 | 6. George Baker:Little Green Bag - It's totally one of those songs which was destined to get revived by Tarantino, like it's a bit a cool and a bit novelty. Anyway, fun but probably something I wouldn't fire up too often. 3.4 |
Divaman
11.06.21 | >Where'd my comments go? I listened up to day 5 and left comments
I promise I didn't touch them. |
Divaman
11.06.21 | 6. George Baker - Bass and tambourine intro. Don't love this vocal, especially when he takes it up an octave. Just kind of goes on, too. 2.4 |
Storm In A Teacup
11.07.21 | 7. Scarlet Begonias - I even love Sublime. This is a good one. 🙂 3.8/5 |
fogza
11.07.21 | 7. Sublime: Scarlet Begonias - It's sad what happened, but I never really got Sublime. This one has nice touches here and there but overall it's a bit boring. 2.8 |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.07.21 | "I'm implying that the SOTD threads did your mom"

dedex
11.07.21 | 6. Little Green Bag - "It's totally one of those songs which was destined to get revived by Tarantino" yes. 3.6
7. Scarlet Begonias - this one don't impress me much (oh oh uuuuh). 2.9 |
Divaman
11.07.21 | 7. Sublime - Mot the biggest Sublime fan, but let's see how it goes. Mid-tempo percussion followed by organ and then vocals. Think I remember this song. The lyrics are familiar. Just OK. Minus .1 for the bridge. 2.4 |
dedex
11.08.21 | 8. Dark Blue and Gold - at first was like yeah its alright but around the 3:30 mark i was like yeah its very good. 3.6 |
fogza
11.08.21 | dedex is such a top 10 user |
dedex
11.08.21 | teehee no you 🤗 |
Divaman
11.08.21 | 8. Pina Kollars - Chimy stuff, followed by slow music and a singer who sounds like Dolly Parton if she was a heavy smoker. Kind of dark and cool. (Plus fogza gave me two colors for the price of one.) 3.6 |
fogza
11.09.21 | 9. Disclosure: White Noise - Has quite an old school feel. Not entirely my thing, but it's ok. 3.2 |
JohnnyoftheWell
11.09.21 | 4. The Green: sputnikuser trifolium stop trying to have sex with me 3.0
5. Redlight Moments: "the guy is actually singing" LOL bullshit fuckouttahere. was gonna 1 this on principle but it is not a 1 maybe bladee is worth the hype after all 2.2
6. Little Green Bag: this is wholesome hungry music but i am not hungry. fun. 3.3
7. Scarlet Begonias: oh yeah this is what sublime sounds like never mind i don't like it 2.5
8. Dark Blue and Gold: fogza is arguably the worst possible kind of user bc he gets the wrong end of the carrot with like 57% of music ever but also rarely recs a bad song so i can't laugh at him like diva and colton wow this song reminded me why fogza is just the worst i like it (even if the prod is a bit weird, vocals are way high in that mix). there is a fake guitar solo synth/vocalise thing??? and it sounds great 3.6
9. White Noise: so yeah Disclosure is kinda a situationalist thang for me and this is good but also not the situation, man i'm drinking cocoa and just wanna chill here 3.3
10. Blue Avenue: thank you dedex this is exactly what i needed right now. maybe those beats in that wheelhouse feel a bit dated but idc this is the early sunset afternoon blues vibe today 3.6 |
Trifolium
11.09.21 | If that's really how you feel Johnny, alright, I will 😞❄❄❄ |

11.09.21 | 9. Disclosure - Snappy synth percussion intro. Electronically distorted vocals. I'm not much into house music. Pleasant enough, I guess. 2.9 |

Storm In A Teacup

ArsMoriendi
11.10.21 | "Little Green Bag"
Good bass. This is a fairly simple pop song, but in a fun catchy way. I gotta say: I like it.
3.7/5
"Scarlet Begonias"
I like Sublime, but fuck Grateful Dead lyrics, they're so annoying. The best thing about this song is the drums. See, even Bradley had to add his own lyrics and they're better than the other ones. Ugh.
2.7/5
"Dark Blue and Gold"
Gross voice honestly. The guitar's pretty cool, it's too bad that she sounds like she has a cold. Yeah, no thanks.
2.5/5
"White Noise"
Intense beat. Honestly, "When a Fire Starts to Burn" is a certified banger and "Latch" and "F for You" are cool, so I have high hopes for this. This is kinda less catchy and memorable than those other ones. It's not bad though, might even be fun in a club. I feel like it needs more identity though.
3/5 |
fogza
11.10.21 | Storm, your comment and scoring make no sense lol. Although to be fair, the Wovenhand track is better than my pick. |
fogza
11.10.21 | 10. Jazz Liberatorz: Blue Avenue - I don't want to use the dreaded background music comment, but it's kinda background music. 3.1 |

11.10.21 | 10. Jazz Liberatorz - Jazz, huh? I'm not hopeful. Woodwinds and synth playing jazz chords. I like the percussion. Oops. They just veered off course. They had me, and then they lost me. Back on track, but I can't unhear the bit in the middle 2.5 |

11.12.21 | 12. Daydream in Blue - pretty cool tune ye. 3.6 |
Divaman
11.12.21 | 12. I Monster - Synthy opening, followed by an unexpectedly gentle, poppy vocal. Weird contrast between the vocal and the synth, which gets a little heavy on the chorus. Distorted vocal on the bridge. It's like a 60's pop song given a weird 2021 synth arrangement. Abrupt ending. 3.1 |
fogza
11.13.21 | 13. New Model Army: Green and grey - Song makes me a little sad. 3.5 |

SlothcoreSam
11.14.21 | 4. The Green. 3.5. This has done great elements and came together well.
5. Redlight moments. 1.0, too much auto tune and lame beats, sounds like it was made on early fruity loops.
6. Little green bag. 3.4, it is almost a classic, just missing something. Vocals are great.
7. Sodium
8. Dark blue and gold. 3.3 It's husky country, but a little grittier and psychedelic rockier.
9. White noise. 4.2 Loved this album when it came out, and this was top 5 on the album.
10. Blue Avenue. 3.2, great for a lounge.
11. Coxcomb red. 3.3 waiting for something. |
Storm In A Teacup
11.14.21 | 10. Jazz Liberatorz - “Blue Avenue” a small but lovely piece in the first half. Gonna check this artist(s?) out more and get high outside to it. 3.5/5
11. Coxcomb Red I didn’t really care for this and was ready to move on within the first minute. 2.4/5
12. Daydream in blue I know I’ve heard this before but can’t place where. Was it on a soundtrack ever? Decent stuff 3.2/5
13. Green and Grey it didn’t grab me at all 2.4/5 |
Storm In A Teacup
11.14.21 | 14. Blinded By The Emerald Mist basically a Yes song indeed lol 3.5/5 |

11.14.21 | "Blue Avenue"
This is chill jazzy hip hop bears so far. Nice. A bit uneventful, but still cool.
3.4/5
"Coxcomb Red"
I like the guitar tone and mood so far. Vocals are eh, but I'm feeling the vibe.
3.5/5
"Daydream in Blue"
What in the Glory Box is this???? Cool vocoder. Good strings, good beats, good vocals, good everything?
4.2/5
"Green and Grey"
Is this is a Roundabout cover? Wait, no it's some folk song. Nice pickup. Decent enough.
3.3/5
"Blinded By the Emerald Mist"
Geeky prog, but not geeky prog I find too engaging. Too long for what it is.
2.8/5 |

11.14.21 | Also can I please host next month, I have a theme that only works for December!

11.15.21 | 15. Smashing Pumpkins: Blue Skies Bring Tears - SP is one of those bands I just lost interest in after Mellon Collie. This is actually better than I expected, but it still sort of just plods along. 2.9 |
dedex
11.15.21 | 13. Green and Grey - cool tune with a bit of a doomer vibe. 3.5

11.15.21 | Oh wait can I change my 2nd pick on the twentyfifthf to
Neko Case - Deep Red Bells
(from Blacklisted)
B/c it is the best song and it makes me cry, and it just did that very cry yet again |
Divaman
11.15.21 | 15. The Smashing Pumpkins - Slow guitar opening. Billy Corgan's whiny voice. It's alright, but pretty repetitious and kind of draggy. 2.6 |

11.16.21 | 16. Maudlin of the well: Excerpt - I'm going to use Johnny's pick to soapbox after receiving some backhanded compliments a few days ago. I think we all envy the effortless cool of Johnny's inimitable writing style, but it comes at a price. You have to be the kind of sadist who willingly chooses an 11 minute post whatever track for song of the day; and true to form parts of it are pleasant, and parts of it have a rambling madman singing gibberish in a young Mr Burns voice. This is price of cool people; you have to rep weird music choices hard until inevitable irrelevance allows you to retire and enjoy, say, sebadoh's post gaffney records. Sidebar: did the of the well thing come from this band? 3.4 |

11.16.21 | 16. Excerpt from 6,000,000,000,000 Miles Before the First, or, the Revisitation of the Blue Ghost - long title - and long song woah! pretty tones ngl. sometimes i remember i loved this band (and prog). allé, for all time's sakes. 4.0

11.16.21 | I 'member when you rec'd that Sam Sparro track - what a fucking banger |

Rood is hilariously awkward, would have been a nice rec as well |
Divaman
11.16.21 | OK gang, one more song and we've got the whole month. |
Divaman
11.16.21 | 16. maudlin of the Well - Vaguely inside-out intro. Strings. Oh fuck, it's more than 10 minutes long. And it's too early to start drinking. Sigh. OK, bring it. Weird, half whispery, half raspy vocal. He's practically exhaling the lyrics. Fairly slow pace. Kind of draggy. I actually sort of liked the early part, but it's stalling out somewhat halfway through. OK, just picked up, but now it's doing a stop-and-start. And here comes a whole new movement altogether. Way too all over the place for me. 2.8 |
Divaman
11.17.21 | Storm, you said you had one. Why don't you close out the month for us? |

fogza
11.17.21 | 17. Steely Dan: Your Gold Teeth II - Hate the intro, I hate that mosquito sound. Swings into that old 70's theatrical rock voice that makes me antsy. Segues into that lounge guitar tone I don't fancy. Look, I'm just a pleb who doesn't like how anything sounds on this, you can throw as many time signature changes as you care to at it. 2.3 |
Koris
11.17.21 | I guess that's what I get for picking a jazz-prog song xD
But I guess that's the beauty of differing opinions. Everything you disliked about the song is everything I love about it |
fogza
11.17.21 | I'm sorry Div, I'm just a simple guy 😔 |

11.17.21 | 17. Your Gold Teeth II - I like their more subdued work tbh, this one didn't tickle me pp yfm. 2.8 |

11.17.21 | "what a fucking banger"
Absolutely. A big one.
And agreed about Bløf Pangea! |
porcupinetheater
11.17.21 | Will listen to the rest when finals are done in a couple, but in the mean time
11. Ohia - 5. 5 forever.
16. Maudlin - 5. 5 forever. |

Divaman
11.17.21 | 17. Steely Dan - I have this album, but the only two songs I ever remember are "Dr. Wu" and "Everyone's Gone to the Movies". Let's see if this stirs up some memories. Some opening jazz stylings. Hmm, is this going to be an instrumental? Oh, wait, I remember this one. I kind of like it. 3.4 |
Storm In A Teacup
11.17.21 | 3.4 on 16 |
Storm In A Teacup
11.17.21 | Oh quit your quality strawmanning porc the sublime song is only 3 minutes 31 seconds that's only a third of a song from your perspective. 🥳 |

11.18.21 | 18. Peter Gabriel: Red rain - It should be illegal to pick songs like this, I want to mark it down because it's so obvious but it's Red Rain so 4.7 |
Storm In A Teacup
11.18.21 | 17. I enjoy most of the instrumental. Vocals are okay, sometimes great. Rudimentary vocal delivery to start made me think it would be worse but it wasn’t. Not quite a Chevelle 3.8 but still enough to be close 3.4/5 |
Storm In A Teacup
11.18.21 | 18. Red Rain I can see this song winning the month. Borderline Chevelle rating of 3.7/5 |

3. Blue Pail Forever - this does nothing to me. 2.7
4. The Green - it's okay i guess. 3.0
5. Redlight Moments - yeah really not my thing. Generally not a fan of excessive audiotune effects. 2.2
6. Little Green Bag - i feel compelled to tell you all that this guy is from my hometown. Cool track too. 3.8 |
SlothcoreSam
11.18.21 | 12. Daydream in Blue- 4.0 I kinda remember listening to this song ages ago, I think I even own this album, my 2000+ CD collection is gathering dust back home.
13. Green and Grey. 3.3. Great vocals, music is fitting might need to check more.
14. Blinded by the emerald night. 3.1 Was expecting much heavier from the album cover, instead its 70's style proggy euro rock, not bad.
15. Blue skies bring tears. 2.2 I was over the Pumpkins by this album, this song is reflective of the boredom I suffered listing to post-Adore SP
16. Excerpt from 6,000,000,000,000 Miles Before the First, or, the Revisitation of the Blue Ghost. 2.5 Never heard anything from this band, it is crazy there are almost as many Sput ratings of their albums, than there are of Spotify listens. The song itself overstayed its welcome, modern day prog is boring.
17. Your Gold Teeth- 2.7. It is good, but i hate it.
18. Red Rain. 0.1 Have not heard this guy in ages, I guess since commercial radio is dead, i will never have to listen to this type of shit again. You guys all trippin saying this is good.
19. At the Speed of a Yellow Bullet. 2.8 I hate Jet with a passion, and Glassjaw is OK. Luckily this song is better than both, just. |

SlothcoreSam
11.19.21 | Just telling you like I hear it. 😉 |
Divaman
11.19.21 | Is .01 your actual assessment of "Red Rain" as a song, or a decision that you don't like it and don't want to see it win the month, so you're going to give it the lowest score possible? |
SlothcoreSam
11.19.21 | Yeah it's my actual rating for the worst song of the month so far. There is nothing good about it. |

11.19.21 | "Blue Skies Bring Tears"
Weirdly dense and terribly mixed. It seemed like a no-brainer to take the electronics of Adore and make them heavy, but in practice is so bad.
2/5
"Excerpt from 6,000,000,000,000 Miles Before the First, or, the Revisitation of the Blue Ghost"
Off the bat, this is nerd prog, but the strings are cool. Not too into those vocals, but the atmosphere is cool enough. Surprisingly keeping my attention 7 minutes in though... the music is indeed engaging. Okay, 8 and a half minutes, and I'm ready for this to end. Decent enough.
3.6/5
"Your Gold Teeth II"
Sweet vibraphone. Chill and jammy yacht rock. Not much else to say, but it's cool.
3.6/5
"Red Rain"
Very 80s background music. This is too corny for me, sorry.
2.5/5 |

11.19.21 | 19. Head Automatica: At the Speed of a Yellow Bullet - Riffy. It's not really bad, but it sort of happens on its own in the corner while everyone keeps talking. 3.2 |

Divaman
11.20.21 | 20. American Music Club - folky guitar intro and vocal. Slight country stylings. OK. Maybe a little boring, though. 2.9. |

11.21.21 | 21. The Mothers of Invention: Let's Make the Water Turn Black - I'm assuming the music is supposed to clue us in that this is a funny song, but it's not really funny. 2.3 |
Divaman
11.21.21 | I'm not sure they intended it to be "funny" per se. The entire album is like this - it's kind of a deconstruction of the rock music of the time. The album cover itself, front and back, was a parody of Sgt. Pepper. |
ArsMoriendi
11.21.21 | "At the Speed of a Yellow Bullet"
Very hard rock. Yeah I see the Jet comparrison. WAIT WAS THE A ZAPPA REFERENCE? It was "seen the smoke and fire and the market burning down" is a line from Trouble Every Day. This is pretty generic, but I gotta give props for the reference so, so +.1 for that.
3.1/5
"Blue and Grey Shirt"
Alt-country chill vibes. This is pretty nice. I wouldn't say it's standout, but maybe it doesn't need to be.
3.7/5
"Let's Make the Water Turn Black"
Will I like this one? Are you kidding? It's literally my favorite song from my favorite album of all time!!! (not my favorite song of all time, but still!) It's a perfect piece of goofy psychedelic pop. Back when I was 14 and only had Zappa's Best Of, Strictly Commercial, it was THIS song that pushed me to actually explore his albums. I swear to god the combination of storytelling, character creation, satire, voice pitching, jaunty drums, and just my god a window into the more positive side of my soul. "Ronnie's in the army now and Kenny's taking pills. Oh, how they yearn to see a bomber burn. Color flashing, thunder crashing, dynamite machine. Wait till the fire turns green." hits in the weirdest, but best way. 60s Vietnam culture and 50s suburbia culture clash beautifully. God damn, this is a 60s masterpiece. Fuck your favorite 60s album if it isn't this one honestly.
5/5 |
ArsMoriendi
11.21.21 | Sorry, I got a little passionate there, but "Let's Make the Water Turn Black" is taste defining for me |

Plot twist of the century |
fogza
11.21.21 | "I'm not sure they intended it to be "funny" per se"
Well, if it's not supposed to be funny I'd probably score it lower based on the gross subject material and unappealing song lol |
ArsMoriendi
11.21.21 | It has a humorous element to it, but in a satirical type way. The entire album is a commentary on the drastic cultural change that the 1960s brought. 50s style conservatives who hate the changes, the hippies who love it, the police, war, and psychedelic bands etc
If it helps, the characters in the song are based off of Zappa's actual neighbors growing up in the 50s |
Divaman
11.21.21 | Holy fuck! I knew Ars would like it, but I've never gotten a 5 for anything from Ars in my whole Sput life. I think ... I think I'm gonna cry! (sniff) |

11.21.21 | This almost makes up for the emotional trauma and resulting deep depression that Sam caused me earlier in the week. |
Divaman
11.21.21 | Actually, as I was listening the the song during the week prior to recommending it, I was wondering how you all would react to it just hearing it on its own, with no context. It's hard to put myself in that head space, as I've been living with this album for a long time. I'll be curious to see some other reactions. |
fogza
11.21.21 | "If it helps, the characters in the song are based off of Zappa's actual neighbors growing up in the 50s"
I actually read the wiki entry for the song after listening and found the whole thing a bit gross and silly, but maybe that's just me |
Divaman
11.21.21 | I don't know if I even knew what the actual concept was when I first heard it. I just knew that it was totally different than the music that everyone was listening to around me, and it spoke to me in a way far beyond most of the other stuff I was hearing. Of course, I was also an early teen, so the grosser the better! :) |

11.22.21 | 20. Blue and Grey Shirt - sad 😥 but pretty 😊 3.5
21. Let's Make the Water Turn Black - woah if this ain't Arscore i dunno what is. song is doofy but kinda fun. 3.0
22. Brown to Blue - 60s easy listening divorce banger. 3.1 |
Koris
11.22.21 | Alright, I guess I'll finally join in for once:
1. Red Skies - pretty cool tune. I love when songs use those percussive stabs of clean guitar; really gives off a cool post-punk edge (even though this is more like new wave). 3.5/5
2. Black Flowers - I keep telling myself to get into this band but never follow through with it. Maybe I should start soon though, given how nice this song is. Simple but enjoyable piano arrangement, and I like how dreamlike the atmosphere is. 3.8/5
3. Blue Pail Fever - Beautiful neofolk with excellent guitar playing and cool baritone vocals. Yeah, this one is awesome; another artist I've never checked out, but maybe I'll do so this weekend. 4/5
4. The Green - Not sure how I'd classify this, but it's pretty interesting at least. I like the weird quirky synths and funky rhythms. 3.2/5
5. Redlight Moments - I haven't heard much of Bladee's stuff outside of Eversince, but this was pretty decent. I don't mind the autotune much, and I think it's done for stylistic reasons anyway. The beat's nothing special, but still... this was ok overall. 3/5
6. Little Green Bag - Ah shit, I'm incredibly familiar with this one! I've been a massive Tarantino fan for a long time, so of course I instantly associate this with Reservoir Dogs; in any case, it's a fun song. I'm probably biased, but yeah, I like this one a lot. 4/5 |
porcupinetheater
11.22.21 | 1. Red Skies - Was so prepared to rate lower but that hyperactive instrumental at the front of the bridge revitalized the whole thing. Real nifty odd touch. 3.4
2. Black Flowers - Nice upbeat melody, weird little background quirks, pleasethereal vocals, dumb quasi-clever lyrics. Classic YLT. Play the hits! 3.5
4. The Green - Last minute and a half are *gold*, but the first couple minutes don’t do much. Don’t really even feel like they add much groundwork to make that awesome backside hit harder. Tryna get hit by some backside. 3
5. Redlight Memories - Still don’t know wtf I like Bladee 3.5
6. Little Green Bag - ew bad memories of people making me watch Tarantino movies gross. Bass rocks everything else is bad 2.3
7. Scarlet Begonias - Ugh Sublime is the worst and this is bad even by their standards, and since we apparently got this increment here’s the absolute floor 0.1
8. Dark Blue and Gold - These vocals have so much character than they even help sell the sort of obvious instrumental. Nice as hell, 3.8 |
ArsMoriendi
11.22.21 | " and since we apparently got this increment here’s the absolute floor 0.1"
It was just Sam using the under 1/5 scores but now I guess that's no longer true lol |

11.22.21 | 22. George Jones - Old country vibe. Sad divorce song. It's alright, but I'm not much of a country fan. 2.8 |
Pangea
11.22.21 | 12. Daydream in Blue - the song it samples is great, this i do not really care for. 2.7
13. Green and Grey - love this, song has a great build up. 4.2 |

11.23.21 | 23. Bright Yellow Gun - 90s alt, yes! 3.9 |

11.23.21 | 14. Blinded by the Emerald Mist - nerd prog at its best. 4.0 |

11.23.21 | 7. Scarlet Begonias - Yeeeeeeeeaaaah... I can't stand Sublime, sorry. And wait, this is a Grateful Dead cover? Yeeeeeeeeeaaaah... not much of a fan of them either, lol. 1/5
8. Dark Blue and Gold - Not bad. I like the vibrato in the singing, and the guitar playing is pretty good. Nice combo of folk and alternative rock going on here. 3.3/5
9. White Noise - This one sounds really familiar tbh. Anyway, nice beat and I like the light airy vocals. The love the moments when the beat drops out and the synths just sway back and forth. 3.7/5
10. Blue Avenue - Damn, this sounds great! Love the combination of the horns and the hip-hop beats. I used to live pretty close to Los Angeles, and this gives off the feeling of walking around the bustling city at night with your headphones on. Awesome. 4/5 |
Divaman
11.23.21 | 23. Throwing Muses - 90's alt rock. These guys are alright, although I always liked Kristin Hersh's stepsister (Tanya Donnelly of Belly) better. 3.6 |

11.23.21 | how did you feel about 'the real ramona' diva? back when both of them were in the band? |

11.23.21 | I wasn't really following them, unfortunately. One of these days, I'll go back and revisit. I only became aware of both Tanya and Kristin after Belly's first album. |

11.23.21 | 20. Blue and Grey Shirt. 2.8, OK, sounds like something I could hear at open night mic down the road.
21. Let's Make the Water Turn Black. 3.0 I guess this is an acquired taste, that maybe you can grow into. I am not quite there yet, but has some elements I like.
22. Brown to Blue. 2.1 Drifter has quite the eclectic music taste.
23. Bright Yellow Gun. 2.8 Some female fronted alt rock, I think I have heard this before, or the lyrics are so obvious I am guessing the next few words before they come out. Vocal sound a bit like Chrissy Amphlett, from Divinyls, it isn't bad, just lacking some ooomph. |

Well, at least for Thanksgiving tomorrow, I can be grateful that I got this over with today. Slow guitar intro. Nice puffy pirate shirt. Thought about scoring this one anywhere from 2.3 to 2.8. I'll split the difference and give it a 2.5 |

11.26.21 | 11. Coxcomb Red: Nice vocals and warm guitar tone. Gets a bit boring after a while, but I like the vibe. 3/5

11.27.21 | "Brown to Blue"
Old-timey country with a soul. Simple and cute.
3.4/5 |
Storm In A Teacup
11.27.21 | My first pick was a throw away song but my second pick for me is a 4.9/5 song. Excited for y'all to hear. Need to catch up on this after this weekend. |
Storm In A Teacup
11.27.21 | I 5 purple rain tho because porc is a fucker and it is a 5 anyway. 😡 |
ArsMoriendi
11.27.21 | "Bright Yellow Gun"
I feel like this is popular 90s radio rock, but I've never heard it. It's catchy, but not really interesting beyond that.
3/5
"Purple Rain"
Well I mean everyone knows this one. It's a slow 80s pop ballad and I wish I liked this more. A lot of passion and nice guitar work for sure though. I feel like it goes on for too long. Raspberry Beret is better than this idk. It's cool though.
3.5/5
"Deep Red Bells"
This came out swinging with country jangles. This is pleasant, but it's not really my thing. I like the guitar and the atmosphere, but the voice isn't engaging me enough to give this a high score.
3.2/5 |

16. Excerpt from 6,000,000,000,000 Miles Before the First, or, the Revisitation of the Blue Ghost - don't really like the vocals, but otherwise this is great. dig the acoustic bits. 3.3
17. Your Gold Teeth II - nice jammy jazz fusion. 3.5
18. Red Rain - i don't really remember this one, so a bit confused at all the classic comments. anyway, it's pretty boring. 2.5
19. At the Speed of a Yellow Bullet - i was kinda annoyed at all the Come Ons, but it has good energy. 2.8 |

11.29.21 | 29. Lantlos: Azure Chimes - Ok when I saw the band write-up and it said progressive black metal I was like "oh no, here we go 7 minutes of torture", but you know what, this was ok, actually maybe something better than ok that I would listen to more than once even. #suprised 3.5 |

26. The Afternoon Turns Pink. 3.1. Needed something extra
27. Red Paper Lanterns. 3.9, great instrumental post rock track.
28. Blue noise. 2.5 perfectly average
29. Azure chimes. 3.9, this is German blackgaze, sounds like the last couple of Deafheaven albums were heavily influenced by this.
30. Blue Leaves, Red Dust. 4.1 This Australian band were mostly known for their version of Forever Young, but they had a lot of other great stuff, I have this album on CD, and this was one of the better tracks, haven't listened to it in aaaages.

12.02.21 | "Red Paper Lanterns"
Floaty guitar and twinkly bells, hmmm. Don't like that breakdown. Meh.
2.8/5
"Blauwe Ruis"
So is this power pop? Decent solo section. I like the spacey atmosphere. Most of this was meh though, but +.1 for the interesting enough section.
3.1/5
"Azure Chimes"
Very down-tuned guitars so far. Oh, it's metal. The vocals remind me of Alice in Chains for some reason. This instrumental section is so boring.
2.5/5
"Blue Leaves, Red Dust"
More floaty guitar, this time with sweet vocals. This is good and all, but it feels a bit overlong.
