| My 2021 With A Twist
Same as last year, I missed a lot of music in years gone by but working from home 4 out of 5 days a week in new covid world has really helped me catch up.
This list is my true 2021 list, not just albums that were released this year! | 1 | | Every Time I Die Radical
AOTY and undeniably so, for me | 2 | | Cradle Of Filth Existence Is Futile
I’ve always been a massive COF fan and this was my favourite of the recent comeback trilogy | 3 | | Blanket Modern Escapism
Beautiful album from out of nowhere. Only stumbled across this as there was a feature by Kadeem from Loathe (my 2020 #1 album) | 4 | | Failure Fantastic Planet
1996
My first non 2021 release!
Early in the year I asked for recs in the style of Hum and Nothing and found this absolute 5 amongst them!
Absolutely love this album. | 5 | | Failure Wild Type Droid
…then ten months (25 years in real time) later they went and released one of the best albums of the year! | 6 | | Coaltar of the Deepers Yukari Telepath
2007
Oh my god what a mental album this is, indie rock, electronica, death metal you name it, it’s here, but this isn’t Colo(u)rs 2 by BTBAM, this is tasteful with real songcraft.
I also really enjoyed their greatest hits collections in Spotify, The Breakstroke 1 and 2.
Thanks JOTW for the rec! | 7 | | Genesis Owusu Smiling with No Teeth
Another great 2021 album from out of nowhere. Centrefold was a solid gold bop that had me dancing around in my office. | 8 | | The Armed Ultrapop
Took a few listens to get used to the EVERYTHINGLOUD production style but this album ruled. This is by far their most accessible album and I hope the next goes even further in that direction as there are some great hooks here on Bad Selection, An Iteration etc. and I’d love them to have more! | 9 | | Manchester Orchestra The Million Masks of God
My first introduction to the band, a really nice listen | 10 | | Manchester Orchestra Mean Everything to Nothing
2009
Went back and checked the discography, some really solid stuff but this was the highlight for me and got on my Spotify EOY list | 11 | | Nothing Guilty of Everything
2014
Loved the new one last year, dug the back catalogue this year! | 12 | | Weezer OK Human
An absolute gem, the only Weezer album I’ve ever truly loved | 13 | | Lume Wrung Out
2018
Really cool album, nice chill grunge | 14 | | The Strokes The New Abnormal
2020
Missed this last year, quality album | 15 | | Vexes Ancient Geometry
Great band, heavily influenced by Deftones but then many are nowadays! | 16 | | Billie Eilish Happier Than Ever
My guilty pleasure of the year, loved this more than any 33 year old man should | 17 | | Mastodon Hushed and Grim
Best ‘don since CTS | 18 | | James Blake Friends That Break Your Heart
Bit of a return to form to me this one | 19 | | Rolo Tomassi Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It
2018
Didn’t jam these guys until this year - been hugely missing out, sorry about me | 20 | | Mol Diorama
Sounds like what Deafheaven should’ve followed up Sunbather with | 21 | | Arctic Monkeys Tranquility Base Hotel and Casino
2018
Really didn’t dig this when it came out but gave it another crack this year and it finally clicked! | |

12.22.21 | I love making these and coming back to them in the future to see where my head was at | JohnnyoftheWell
12.22.21 | Love this list style! Hooray for the past and present, hope this inspires a few peeps to do something similar
also obvs love 6 - would recommend you check Come Over To the Deepend and Submerge if you're still feeling that fix. The second greatest hits album has a couple of winners from those two, but Come Over in particular has an indecent amount of the best Coaltar songs and most are overlooked | Trifolium
12.22.21 | Yesssss nice stuff, and indeed the CoF love is deservedly strong this year once more. | Shemson
12.22.21 | Nice one Johnny, big fan of C/O/T/D off the first and The Lifeblood off the second, will have to make time to dig in properly some time! Should probably check them all at some point to be fair! | Shemson
12.22.21 | Yeah Trif, still buzzing from how good modern COF is! | Prancer
12.22.21 | Nice to see 3 and 8 here, and props for 6, 11 and 19. Submerge is my favorite Coaltar, definitely check that one. | Demon of the Fall
12.22.21 | 'Coaltar of the Deepers are an alternative rock band from Japan that have been active since 1991. Although primarily influenced by shoegaze and post-rock sound, their sound incorporates musical elements as diverse as thrash metal, electronica, neo-acoustic, and bossa nova.'
erm... what? Lol
okay need to check
| Shemson
12.22.21 | Yes Prancer! Number 3 needs as much love as possible, really hope to hear more from them soon!
Haha yeah Demon, that write up is 100% accurate and it actually works 🤣 |
