01.14.22 | the big dance sequence in the red shoes is really a showstopper. I love throwing that scene on as background for hangs and seshes
texas chain saw is fascinating, such a singular directorial vision with a bunch of weird shit thrown in the nooks and crannies. its relationship to suspense conventions, especially when that girl just keeps runnin n runnin, is interesting. and yet I can't say I love it...
I liked olmi's I fidanzati quite a bit but it's been a while and I haven't seen il posto
still havent seen aguirre somehow, but it's my lil bro's fav.
this is something I wrote in my college paper about Kurosawa's JOURNEY TO THE SHORE:
"Kurosawaâs greatest strength, as in Pulse, is still his penchant for exquisite framing. In both films, his characters often seem in a perpetual state of âbeholding,â their backs to the camera, frozen in place by what theyâre looking at. Whether it be a long-dead husband or a wall of cut-and-paste flowers, the objects of his charactersâ gazes are all the more captivating because we have no idea whatâs going on between the two of them. Something, gracefully, is being withheld from us."
I like Cure and Pulse well enough but something in my response feels not full-bodied enough to say they're great (nor Journey, although I actually think that movie is relatively underrated) |
Ryus
01.14.22 | nice take on pulse. aguirre is iconic, check it out for sure. it has one of the best opening scene/closing scene combos ever
"the big dance sequence in the red shoes is really a showstopper. I love throwing that scene on as background for hangs and seshes"
for sure. i have my reservations about the film as a whole, but it's one of the most magnificent scenes in film history easily. |

01.14.22 | My Tsai ratings would be
Rebels: great, more conventional than the rest, very moody 7.5/10
vive l'amour: haven't seen it in forever but found it surprisingly boring 5.5/10
the river: perfect and amazing and horrifying 10/10
the hole: interesting. too conceptual. very good 7.5/10
what time is it there?: starts to get sentimental here. good movie 7.5/10
goodbye dragon inn: kinda got that new sentimental edge but mixed with an also-kinda-new focus on endurance/duration 7.5/10
the wayward cloud: SO disturbing. kinda better than the preceding ones; kinda unacceptable 7.5/10
i don't want to sleep alone: decent. shot in malaysia which gives it a different feel 6.5/10
face/visage: bad; boring 4/10
stray dogs: I absolutely loved this when it came out but now I think I might find it a bit too pure an exercise in duration, especially when the subject matter is also kind of painful. really majestic 8/10
haven't seen Days
The River is the one tho |

01.14.22 | Eraserhead and Texas Chainsaw Massacre are kino picks. I would honestly recommend Love Exposure but idk if you'd ever have the time and patience to watch it considering its 4 hour length lmao. |
robertsona
01.14.22 | Yi Yi's a movie it's just the word for the number one in Mandarin repeated. One One. Sometimes on the poster the translation is "a one and a one" |
Pheromone
01.14.22 | love exposure i really liked back in 2013 but now i remember the plot and it makes me feel a certain way

robertsona
01.14.22 | Your taste seems more like my brotherâs than mine tbh so maybe throw in hausu (1977), memories of murder (2003), harakiri (1962), in the mood for love (2000)âŚbut definitely yi, yi |
robertsona
01.14.22 | I havenât seen psycho tbhâamong some people I trust itâs not one of the best, though Iâll seen it eventually and maybe soonâŚrear window intoxicated me as a teen and was exactly what I craved. I mean, the part where he keeps falling asleep? Jeez Louise. Love that movie
Never seen north by northwest
Vertigo is worth seeing. I love it now after three viewings
I think youâd love shadow of a doubt too. Rope is good. Even blackmail from 1928 was good. Notorious is interesting and in some ways incredible and in some ways boring |
Hyperion1001
01.14.22 | shadow of a doubt is my favorite Hitchcock. check that one out. very understated and possibly his best cinematography/editing. |
Hyperion1001
