02.24.22 | I'm from Ukraine, so far there have been several incursions on the border, attacks from the occupied territories (Donetsk, Lugansk, and Crimea), as well as sporadic bombings of military bases, airports, and other infrastructure facilities across Ukraine including Kyiv. So far the response of our Armed Forces and government seems to be adequate, but it's too early to tell how it will play out or for how long will it last. The one thing I'm REALLY scared about: if Putin is crazy enough to launch a full-scale invasion - he's crazy enough to drop a nuke.
Thank you for your support! |
Demon of the Fall
02.24.22 | @gravityswitch: I'd be interested to see what would happen... does he have an army of supporters large enough to cause war?... or would the collective whole just breathe a sigh of relief and think 'thank fuck that's over with'... 02.24.22 | I'm waiting for the brave actions of EU to save the Ukraine and for the amazing German helmets, all 5000 of them, to do the job. The inaction of EU is just mind-blowing.
There are officially more than 0,7 Million Ukrainians in Poland, unofficially I'd say double that. They are not even allowed to work in many of the EU countries, like Germany and France.
All Ukrainian refugees are welcome in Poland, as has always been the case. I've helped a lot of Ukrainian people over the years in many ways, mostly with my hard earned money and finding jobs. I've done enough in that regard to have a say here.
Flugmorph got get your crayon while I see if I've got some spare money to send to foundations that help people there. |

02.24.22 | It's gonna end up exactly like in Georgia. Nobody's gonna help and Ukraine will be annexed (first a puppet government of course, that's what soviets love the most).
Polish borders are already opened for Ukrainian refugees. I'm waiting to see some German/French soldiers/border guard to come help build the refugee camps. That would be appreciated, but I can hardly see that happening. |
Scheumke
02.24.22 | It hardly been 24 hours and you're already talking about inaction?
If you seriously expected an immediate replacement of western troops to the Ukraine / declaration of war against Russia etc. you show a severe misunderstanding of the ramifications that would have. The major powers in the world haven't come this close to clashing since the Cuban Missile Crisis, which is the closest we as a species have ever come to complete annihilation, plus you're dealing with a power hungry mad-men. So yeah, caution and deliberate de-escalation is the only viable option here from the viewpoint of the western powers.
This is gonna be nothing like Georgia, because it has exploded in news media all over the world as a deliberate attack on the Ukraine. Putin will not get away with this by annexing the second largest country in Europe. |

02.24.22 | It's been boiling for months now, it didn't start yesterday. Putin's seen no reaction at all, only those 5000 German helmets, with which Germany casually said "we don't care".
I also don't mean troops, at least not yet. I mean money. Money is the only thing that could really hurt. Sanction Russia out of this fookin' planet. Ostracize all the oligarchs, disallow them all to come to any EU countries, confiscate all their luxurious estates around Europe, close all their European accounts etc. They could then pressure Putin. What happened instead? Putins private yacht worth 75M pounds casually left German shipyard a few days ago.
The West tried to domesticate a beast. Soft diplomacy works among western, democratic countries. It doesn't work on dictators. Money and sanctions are the only way, I believe a lot of life could have been spared with sanctions at the first signs of invasion.
I apologize if this is too political and I'm not going to delve into this anymore as this is not helping anyone.
I agree, that saving as many people as possible is the absolute priority right now. Sending help to the civilians and getting refugees out of the danger is an obligation of our European governments and countries. I hope we can all stand united in this moment. |

02.24.22 | Don't forget that Putin has something on his side that Trump and Johnson don't: He has a pretty much absolute power over the media in Russia. Propaganda and disinformation are very powerful tools when it comes to uniting a mass into seeing a common enemy (or in this case a cause: to liberate the Russian population in Ukraine and give them the 'freedom' they yearn for). Luckily a lot of people can think for themselves and don't blindly believe in the public media anymore, but a lot of them still do. |
DoofDoof
02.24.22 | Yes, Putin has the 'carrot' of pro 'good old days of the USSR' media rhetoric with blanket coverage and anti West sentiment stuff too of course. Say that wins over say half the population.
Then the 'stick' is that he rules with fear and will have ways of making life very uncomfortable for anyone who doesn't pledge support or act how they're expected to. So that's most of the other half.

the USA is the only country that has ever exerted such strong military power that far away from home for that long. the fact that they did not succeed, and only made a mess every time going back to vietnam too, does not change the fact that they are the strongest military power. there is no way to be "more powerful" without the direct usage of nukes or without full wartime production and conscription.
russia does not have to exert itself anywhere near as much to have an influence over the middle east, let alone to take over non-NATO EE countries. this is not the same as having the strongest military. its simple geographical and logistical reality, which putin has no problems exploiting. syria was testing the waters in its own way too |

this was the whole point of my post yes, putin can freely play around in his backyard and there is nothing the USA can do about it at this point without leading to nuclear war. ironically for the new guy who claimed putin is drunk with power, his moves have all been pretty carefully calculated leading up to this. strategically theres nothing stupid in taking what you can when you know your opponents hands are practically tied. ukraine isn't even in NATO, as long as it doesn't end up a complete and utter holocaust no one will want to intervene. he knows EU countries have been salty about USA playing world police. he knows US citizens are salty about wasting lives and money in the middle east. for a sociopathic imperialist what he's doing is both a flex and a freebie essentially |

Power to make any decisions or take any actions. Russians or Chinese can decide and act in seconds, because they are ruled by dictators. Western countries need to go trough endless procedures and everything needs to be approved by dozens of instances. And what's worse with no public support, everything crumbles.
And even in face of war, which has now started, European leaders can't come to any kind of agreement. They debate over SWIFT instead of acting and deciding. All accounts of all Russian oligarchs and all their estates in Europe should be under custody by now. But before anything happens the money will be somewhere in Switzerland or Cayman Islands.
Just read some stuff that Klitschko and Zelensky said. They were asking for sanctions for months now. They were asking for defensive weapons and gear. They got 5000 helmets from Germans and planes from other countries carrying help were disallowed from flying over Germany. How this was handled by the West is a huge disappointment. By this I mean - West made it to Putin clear - you can do whatever you want, we don't care.
Sinternet
at the current rate I'd even fear, that China will take over most of Sub-Saharan Africa before 2050 by some puppet governments that are financially and economically dependent. Internal problems of USA lead to the point when it is more focused on itself then the affairs in the rest of the world.
China and Russia tolerate each other's actions, which puts USA and Europe against two most unpredictable and power hungry dictatorships. I'm even afraid that should there be some kind of intervention, China will step in.
I just can't understand why the sanctions weren't imposed weeks ago and still aren't. Now Ukraine is pretty much gone. I hope I'm wrong but I'm pretty sure I'm not. |

if you think this is a problem, are you suggesting those countries need to be more dictatorial? unfortunately for this simple mindset, there are no good guys and bad guys, every country is out for its own interest in the end and the well-being of its own citizens takes precedence over vague ideas of global justice, especially in the nuclear era.
>And even in face of war, which has now started, European leaders can't come to any kind of agreement.
sure, its all theatre, the decision is ultimately that they wont do shit because they cant do shit without escalating, and if they escalate no one wins. that was the whole point of my post.
you are viewing things through the simplicity of the pre-1945 era. furthermore, if sanctions were imposed before boots-on-the-ground aggression it would be trivial for putin to spin it to his citizens as Muh West trying to bully russia into submission thus gaining even more popular support.
i apologise for being rude before but you are simply looking at things through a much too narrow and idealistic lens, and shots you take at other countries do nothing to improve the situation.
there are many people who could be convinced that sanctions are a deliberate anti-russian move, to do it sooner would only reinforce this. at the same time, people posting online about how sanctions aren't enough or too late, are also reinforcing nationalists' idea that the west is weak and they should do whatever they want. you came in here using their same rhetoric, even if you don't support them. think about that for a second.

do you believe that the quasi-ethno-historical reasons for russia's annexation of crimea in 2014 are "right" or "just"? maybe you should start there if you want to decry fascist nationalism that badly. other than that yes, much of europe has been having a nationalist problem lately, especially in the east where we are poor and poorly educated

not at all, democracy is the only way to go but it is intrinsically inert and slow which does not help exercising power, even if you have any.
>every country is out for its own interest in the end and the well-being of its own citizens takes precedence over vague ideas of global justice
this is obvious and taking into account how near the borders of EU and NATO this is happening it's shortsighted. In the near future we'll see if the same thing happens in the Baltic Countries, than Poland, maybe Finland, maybe Romania. That's where this is heading now.
>if sanctions were imposed before boots-on-the-ground aggression it would be trivial for putin to spin it to his citizens
Sanctions should be aimed at the Oligarchs and their billions. I've said that a lot of times already. Oligarchs rule the
country together with Putin. If they hurt, Putin hurts.
>think about that for a second.
I have even for two. And in a country where the only media is propaganda media this doesn't matter. Any reason can be used and that's what actually has happened, some stupid bullshit was named as an excuse to invade.
>the west is weak
(this is out of context, I know)
I think it's not an accident that this happens when the USA President barely won the election and it's already pretty sure he won't be reelected and Germany has a new government that's already unpopular among Germans. West is weak and divided.
>yeah, because surely what we need is more CIA destabilising of latin america, africa and the middle east...
you know exactly what I meant. USA has enough of it's own problems and it won't act because of the second biggest country in Europe being invaded.
And you know what's the saddest thing? You ever heard of the Budapest Memorandum on Security Assurances? Basically USA and Great Britain offered Ukraine "security assurances" in exchange for getting rid-off any nuclear weapons. As we see now, word given by the West is worthless. Maybe you can recognize now why I give the West so much shit. |

I have not undermined this nor do I doubt that this is true. I know quite well how the world works and why it is how it is.
I come from a home, where keeping your promises and adhering to your word is the most important thing, even if it is a thing you regret in the end and this is a quality that I respect even if it's outdated and doesn't fit with the machiavellian reality of the modern world.
USA and Great Britain have given Ukraine a promise in Budapest in 1994. By not acting they have not kept this promise and ultimately betrayed the people of Ukraine. And this betrayal happens for the second time in a matter of 8 years, first time being the annexation of Crimea in 2014. I fear that this time Ukraine will cease to exist. This will be the ultimate betrayal.

I was raised in a highly conservative Christian family, and one of the key phrases my mother kept reiterating was to "think for myself." Right now, the international community seems to be in a fugue state of comprehension. Democracy is broken. America is broken. We're a petri dish for right-and-left-wing extremist coagulation. And in large part this is the fault of left-wing philosophers (namely the neo-pragmatist liberal bourgeois, who submit that the proliferation of language games and thought groups should be met with mere acquiescence, that such is the postmodern life). But that was so irresponsible. Stanley Fish, Richard Rorty, and the like have effectively killed inquiry into the possibility of some transcendental pragmatics. It's cheesy, the whole "come together" mentality, and I'm not saying that's what needs to happen. 02.25.22 | Not following up any particular point of discussion here, but I just want to point out a few things:
1. A large chunk of Russian population lives cut off from the rest and often with no means of accessing information or even the internet. Many have no phones and can even be illiterate (but don't take this as if we were talking in terms of hundreds of thousands). Some of my relatives live in old-school factory towns and kolkhoz type villages, where their only source of information is a TV with one or two federal channels, a TV that is owned by a minority of population. Their understanding of who the president is and who to vote comes from their boss, who tells them every election season "here are your ballots, fill out these names and sign, then go back to work." Putin is a Tsar, omnipotent ruler, whose presence is merely recognised, but not really understood. That's where the illusion of his popularity comes from. He didn't have to fool the whole nation, because a good portion of it has no means of even entertaining the idea of alternative.
2. Putin's regime was in its twilight. The invasion is both a way to slow down his fall. But it can be a way to accelerate it too.
THIS IS IMPORTANT: Putin's main in-state nemesis, Alexey Navalny, is at this very moment being sentenced to 15 years of solitary confinement, effectively rendering his power impotent and thanks to the invasion his sentencing ignored. Had there been no invasion, there would have been great civil protest, maybe even more violent and lethal to the regime than we've seen before. The opposition certainly was prepared to start it. I have not seen a single article in any language I speak (apart from Russian opposition sites) mention Navalny's court case. The only person capable of mobilising a sizeable resistance to Putin inside Russia is being silenced in a sham hearing with half his legal team, by means of half-false and half-forced confessions made under pressure.
3. It has been repeatedly shown to Putin that the world would not react to his moves. That is why his army currently in Ukraine is barely half the size of Ukrainian mobilised forces. He knows he doesn't need more, because nobody will come and do anything about it.
4. This also poses a perfect shelter for other insurrections around the world, as most people will not notice it. China might take Taiwan any minute now. Azerbaijan might take Armenia any minute now. Kazakhstan might instill extreme measures to suppress its opposition. The same goes for Myanmar. Israel might move to definitively secure their stranglehold of Palestine. North Korea might do some poking too. Fuck knows what can happen in the Middle East at this point. |

All this while they are gaining control of the food industry among others and turning it into shit, depriving the self-made man of self-sufficiency via increasing taxes, state size and state derived jobs. On the other hand comparing Russia to China is ridiculous. China and North Korea are dictatorships with obvious violations of human decency but even in those places they have way better policies when it comes to certain areas. In any case I hate them all. I sound just like I am right now (altough I always was very discontent with the way things work), angry, having to ration food and working my ass off to get just a few $ that barely let me survive. I won't elaborate on my private life but when I say it's easier to have internet and all of this shit than to eat properly I'm not even kidding. Last week I worked for 10 hours every single day loading and unloading trucks. It's the first job I was able to get in 6 months and I'm not that young anymore. I see where this is going and I see how all this worked out, who is benefiting, etc... I was always an avid reader and observer of reality, but it doesn't matter. You are right, I'm a hypocrite for using this tech to express myself and communicate, but it's sadly the only way to communicate with most people nowadays and who knows... maybe something of what I say makes someone question things someday. On real life I do act a lot, altough I won't elaborate on it because again I fear the repercusions. We don't live in a free world at all... A week ago I had to hunt in a "first world" country to have food and to be honest I enjoyed it, realizing I was able to feed myself, but at the same time it made me laugh at the whole illusion and state dependant society we live in. If I had been caught hunting I would have been put behind bars for illegal activities, so much for a free world. And all this while I'm being denied my unemployment pay after contributing for 10 years. I sound and I am angry but at the same time I feel truly free to see the true face of this corrupt, illusory system based on lies, usury and castes. |

02.26.22 | Frost is spot on.
You canât let it being you down though. Thereâs absolutely fuck all you can do about it. Nothing.
The one thing you can do no matter how stamped out it may appear to be is live, laugh, love, hold on to your soul and realise we are living in a moment of time that given past history is still better than how millions have previous lives have lived.
Appreciate what you have. |

02.26.22 | I don't want to start any shit, but if people with the views and outlook like Frost didn't say anything because they were off on farmland direly avoiding any hypocrisy in our 21st century madhouse, how often would the point be brought up? It would just be shoveled away into non-existence and skew the perspective/conflict of freedom vs control and imo it's still somewhat necessary in the discourse.
Not trying to take anything away from any of the important matters that have already been said by the way. |
benkim
02.26.22 | Not a Westerner but watching white people become angry about this likr they give a shit at all about other country's sovereignty is quite hilarious and infuriating at the same time. The West has pretty much become the pinnacle of hypocrisy. It is insane. |
Frost15
02.26.22 | @benkim I'm white and I think exactly like you. It's completely ridiculous, but we are brainwashed from a very early age by movies, series (now netflix), our education system's history lessons are laughable at best, etc... I have african friends and always have a good laugh about our hipocrisy and virtue signaling when stuff like this happens. Most people are just so powerless that use these type of attitudes to feel better about themselves. It's a complex topic but I summed it up.
@zakalwe You are right, and I try to laugh and love, but it just gets harder and harder. I feel most people are broken inside, unconsciously deppressed and addicted to alcohol and technology that allows them to fly away from a reality they never tried to even comprehend because they were taught to be afraid, and given the way I am I find pretty difficult to find people who do still enjoy things like sunbathing, playing board games, eating good quality raw meat and other natural activities. Relationships are getting harder and harder because most women are fucked up, dating apps have messed up everything... I feel completely disoriented in this world but trust me I'm still trying. I have a few friends and precisely today I met a very nice girl and enjoyed a day outside walking and eating raw meat so I'm sure there are still interesting people who feel like me. |

02.26.22 | 99.9999% of white people I've met are unaware flag bearers and cheerleaders for that shit. In the global south, we've all come to the conclusion that there are no allies in the West. They will always want to keep the rest of the world subservient and poor. At this point it is obvious the West is completely irredeemable. Even Bush and Obama have the absolute balls to speak about this when the latter turned Libya into a slave market for people from my continent and started the worst jihadist problem the Sahel has ever seen. I'm absolutely disgusted that piece of shit has roots from my country. All he did is put a smiley face and a black face on American imperialism. |

02.26.22 | Yeah, keep dropping the truth bombs benkim. Or the fact that European goverments (again, USA puppets) used Somalia as their nuclear waste graveyard (through the Italian mafia boats) and then put 'Captain Philips' on the big screen to make us see how "bad" Somali pirates were bla bla (they were forced to become criminals when all the fish were killed and their family members started to die from cancer and malformations(search for pictures and maybe when you see them you will wonder why during your whole life you saw 10000 pictures from the holocaust but none of those)). The west is disgusting, but it's not a matter of skin color my friend, it's all cultural background and upbringing. That's why they need to talk about the evil nazis and all that stuff related to the WWII and the short moustache guy who died more than 60 years ago, to point to the scarecrow so that everyone will look elsewhere instead of thinking about what is going on right now. |
benkim
02.26.22 | I'll clarify the race reference. You can bomb and kill non-white people all you want but as soon as you start doing the same thing to white Ukrainians, it is an absolute travesty worthy of everyone's attention. Everyone is all up in arms about that unacceptable atrocity. Quite subtle but it is obvious how little non-white lives are worth to people in the West. Their exploitation, killing and suffering is barely worth a footnote. People are too accustomed to have accepted that as their plight and are so ready to turn a blind eye when their countries inflict political, economic, and military violence on those people. |

If Ukraine was populated by blacks it would receive the same attention because of its geopolitical ubication. It's all a matter of the chess square position on the board, it's not about the square color. Of course you have racist bigots like KKK and such but from a modern point of view it's mostly not like that altough I understand your comment and what you are trying to say, which I share in its core. |

My respect for the West was already at rock bottom but I've discovered that a basement exists. |

while i absolutely believe these actions do more harm than good in both short and long term it's not about persecuting these individuals for other people's crimes, it's to turn them against their government for its crimes. it's questionable all the same, but nobody is putting any blame on the average russian individuals
"And again, it's not a matter of skin color. It's cultural. If Ukraine was populated by blacks it would receive the same attention because of its geopolitical ubication."
and absolutely amen. to think the reactions on this war are all about ukrainians being white, let alone finding this mayhem somehow entertaining really tells something about one
there is quite literally a powerful nation attacking a european democracy on european soil, you really don't need to dig that deep to find the reasons behind the reactions |

Both versions seem like wishful thinking. |
Scheumke
03.04.22 | From what I get from it is that both are true. I think Putin will take Ukraine in a couple of weeks at the most, will probably set up a puppet government then get the hell out again. Yet I think Putin completely misjudged the toughness of the Ukrainean people and the unity with which Nato basically sanctions Russia to bankrupcy and economic collapse in the long run. Not a country in the west will have anything to do with Russia for the next five years at least, making this invasion a disaster for Russia as a country. He has slowly but surely been doing anything he wants for the last 20 years without serious repercusions, not completely unfairly figured Nato was devided and too scared for action. Now all of a sudden he lit a tinderbox that seems to blow up in his face from an international relations perspective. Honestly I just think he thought he could get away with it again without repercussions and didn't see this reaction coming at all, but it's too late to call off now. |
