03.01.22 | I like a story in the lyrics but I don't listen to tons of straight up, 100% storytelling. I figure this is going to be pretty heavy month with long dark songs, so here's a cheerful, short ditty about an old lady being robbed by an incestous naked guy.

03.01.22 | I know this song's long as hell, but I'm gonna go with "I Trawl the Megahertz" by Paddy McAloon https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J-P7yVqJ9Wk
It's a beautiful, sprawling chamber piece in which the narrator Yvonne Connors tells "the story of her life"; this story she tells is supplemented by anecdotes that are presented as fragments of her memory. The composition is autobiographical in nature despite having sections inspired by documentaries and phone-ins, and McAloon himself has likened it to a short film. Still one of my favorite pieces to this day |
Koris

On top of that I do think the different track segments tell us a story of hip hop through the eyes of Lil Ugly Mane. I wrote a very pompous review detailing all that jazz |

03.10.22 | Yeah it’s good, but I love The Kinks version
Apparently Ray Davies wrote because the band’s producer danced with a woman at a gay bar they were at only to find out it was a drag queen and was super surprised. The Kinks apparently used go to gay bars a lot since Dave Davies was bisexual, and it caused the band to have a big LGBT following from what I’ve read. They have A lot of lyrics about gay stuff for a 60s/70s band haha. Like their song “David Watts” is another great one of those |

03.13.22 | "Surgeon's Saw"
Exciting! I like the overall feeling of this one.
3.8/5
"How to Make Gravy"
Feels oddly country? Not into this at all so far. Okay, these lyrics are not good. I'm sorry, I can't.
2.3/5
"Ballad of Vitaly"
Folk guitar and shaky vocals. Cool pickup. Not bad.
3.6/5
"Dead City Centers"
A lot of beeping so far. Not a story. Now it's creepy and jazzy like a Twin Peaks song, okay? Cool enough.
3.5/5
"Naked Man"
Very peppy so far. Newman's voice is charming, but maybe not something I like too much. I like the mellon-type sound though.
3.4/5
"The Kursk"
11 miutes AND you didn't include a link for it? Lame, hope I chose a good version if there's multiple versions. Floaty instrumental guitar for 3 minutes. Do you guys know what a story is? 6 minutes for the lyrics to come in? Weird. This is now mostly echoey vocalizations... okay. This is kinda pointless and hollow.
2.2/5
"Indigo Night"
Simple and pleasant. Boring too.
2.9/5
"Tisíc Dnů Mezi Námi"
Finally, something lively. Like stories don't need to sound dead, there's an art to it! No idea what she's saying though. The male vocalist kinda ruins it.
3.2/5
"Lil Ugly Mane"
Creepy voices and chimes. Boring and annoying at this point (4-minutes in.) Part 3 is fine, best part. This is too long aaah.
2.5/5 |
ArsMoriendi
03.13.22 | "Gemini Becoming the Tripod"
Is this a story? The vocals sound so washed out and growly like what. This is not a story. What the hell, guys? Do you all hate this theme? Because this theme rules, but only like 2/3 of the songs so far have felt narrative. This song sucks a lot. Maybe I ranked post-metal too high on my genre ranking list.
1.2/5
"Town of Pray"
Folky and lively so far, off to a good start. Not exactly my thing, but I like it enough.
3.3/5
"Annihilation of the Evil Machine"
Oh my god it's meme rap. Wait, no, the performance is actually played straight. So I guess it's just corny, not a meme. This got better as it went on. Hmmm. Still corny though.
3.1/5
"I Loved Annie First"
Not too into these vocals, but the music is cool. The nah-nah-nahs are weird and not in a way I'd like.

03.14.22 | 12. K-Rino: Annihilation of the Evil Machine - Is playing out your internal "i'm a hero" fantasy a hip hop thing, like when RZA made that Man with the Iron Fists movie? sounds a bit cheap but i haven't got the best speaker in my room i guess. it's ok but i don't love it. 2.8 |

03.14.22 | 13. Tony Hightower: I Loved Annie First - Tony really goes for it, inserting a bunch of nene nene ne ne's to contextualise what phase of life this occurs in. i don't know why i'm so grinchy but it kind of started to irritate me. anyway, maybe a 3 because it was short and the music was pleasantish. |

03.15.22 | 15. Frank Zappa: The Adventures of Greggery Peccary - Ok, I want to preface this by saying even though Ars brings out the worst in me from a pointless argument perspective, I do, in fact, appreciate him and all he brings to sput.
Personally, I feel picking a song the length of an EP is a little contrary to the spirit of SOTD. Thay may be a bit rich for someone who has only played a few rounds, but there, I said it. The occasional 12 minute bad boy is ok, I mean we all like to have a chuckle at some power metal epic while we sip our morning chamomile. But I would love to see more people shitpost about the songs, or love the songs, or whatever, on the regular. I dream of a world where 70% of the people who rec a song say something amusing about a song on a daily or weekly basis. Because, aside from CC, SOTD has been an entry point into Sput banter for me, and that is meaningful. It probably shouldn't be, like I should be reading academic literature in my spare time, but whatever. So a 20 minute cartoon soundtrack might scare folks away and make it difficult to just slip the track onto your fave playlist for the day and get to it in the course of your busy life
As for the song itself? Little snatches of music blare at you intermittently like malignant crazed hamsters living in mushroom infested corners of a crumbling high rise building imagined by JG Ballard. It is the Tom and Jerry soundtrack of drug fuelled mania, with some sort of parable about the evils of calendars delivered by a faintly off-putting narrator. I don't like it. Koris, no pressure, but your pick better be as conceptually good as crispy butter pastry. 1.5

03.16.22 | 16. Gareth Liddiard: Radicalisation of D - Ok, so I know I've been ranting about song length, so this is going to sound like a bit of an about turn.
Liddiard creates a staggering level of tension with the unsettling guitar lines that allow you to fully immerse yourself in the hellish and horrific world created by meshing his and Hicks' past. The lyrics are brilliant; not flashy but so detailed and believable. Despite the hysteria at the end, the song never drifts into cabaret or pantomime, and the production makes you feel isolated in a circle of darkness closing in around you like a sack inches from the top of your head. 5 |

03.18.22 | 1. Roselit Bone - Intro sounds like I'm in a bullfighting arena. The body of the song sounds like music for a spy film. Kind of fun, but I don't love the vocal. It's very Violent Femmes. 3.1
2. Paul Kelly - Nicely strummed guitar. Fairly vanilla, but I like it. 3.3
3. Delta Spirit - Nicely picked guitar, Arlo Guthriesque vocal. (Reminds me that I should have rec'd the pickle song.) A little samey, but OK. Ooo, changes beat about 3 minutes in, then gets all dreamy about 6 minutes in. Could have used some editing. 3.0 |

03.18.22 | 4. Ulver - Creepy sounds. I think I see Freddie Krueger. But he's using some kind of short wave radio or something. Now we're in a submarine. budgie, I'm looking at the lyrics. Is this a song about California? Ooo, it suddenly got jazzy. Hmm. Spoken words. I liked the mood in the early part, but this narrated part isn't doing it for me. 2.6
5. Randy Newman - Geez, Ulver to Randy Newman. Now there's a transition. OK, some nice piano. Almost ragtime music, though. And I've never been a fan of Newman's vocals. 2.7
6. Matt Elliott - Eleven-and-a-half minutes, huh? Try my attention span, why don't you? Over a minute's worth of useless sound effects. I'd chop that right off. Now some slow guitar, with some ghosty sounds in the background. Almost 4 minutes in and not a word has been sung yet. Just some choral vocals in the background. You're really pushing it Matt. Have you got an actual song for me or not? Or are you totally just bluffing? C'mon, I'm a busy man here. Fuck, almost 6 minutes in. God, I hate drunks. OK, the song has finally started. Lead vocal is kind of low in the mix, though. All the choral guys are drowning him out. Come on choral guys, let Matt sing. I can't hear what he's trying to tell me. This is more atmosphere than song. 2.8 |

2. Paul Kelly - Very easy-going song, which I like. Maybe I'm not a fan of this style but it doesn't capture my attention much 2.8
3. Delta Spirit - I can see this one winning. What a powerful narrative. I like the way the song structure imitates the nature of a plane crash. Ironic cuz their name is delta spirit? You might get docked for 8 minutes but I won't cuz it's earned 4.2
4. Ulver - This really takes you for a ride. I like dissonant stuff so this works for me. The juxtaposition of dark jazz with a movie trailer voice guy was interesting. Ulver really did that, huh? Guess I should check this album finally 3.6 |

3.1/5
"Radicalisation of D"
I don't know how people are complaining about my 20 min choice when there are multiple 16 min ones and a 22 min one lol. WAIT AN ACTUAL STORY, nice. Folky and simple. I wish this had more variation. 6 minutes have passed and musically it's been the same. I certainly prefer long songs to be more dynamic than this. I also find folk where it's just one man and a guitar to be a fairly dull choice. So yeah, I don't like this. 13 minutes in and man...no lyrics are good enough to make something like this work. FINALLY! ONLY TOOK 14 AND A HALF MINUTES. Well good ending, so bonus points for that, but most of this is just meh.

03.19.22 | "Radicalisation of D" (a cover)
Oh great, it's the same fucking song but 2 minutes longer and electric lol. You guys are legit not allowed to complain about my choice anymore. At least the more developed instrumentation is making this go faster. I won't lie, I took a break at the 7-minute mark to eat dinner, but I just heard the original in full so like how many times am I supposed to listen to the same shit?

Divaman
03.20.22 | 8. Nerez - Some nice guitar and a pleasant female vocal. It's followed by an equally pleasant male vocal later on. 3.4
9. Lil Ugly Mane - Uh oh. What's this? Oh crap, it's hip-hop, my mortal enemy, with a bunch of weird ass music backing it up. 10 minutes worth. Why would you do this to me, dedex? Why? (Sobbing.) Jesus God, this is awful. it sounds inside out. OK, Part 2 - some pleasant piano. This part is at least tolerable. It's going to take a lot to recover from Part 1, though. Now there's just a bunch of echoey lines repeated. Are we still in Part 2? OK, the music has shifted again, so this must be Part 3. The music is weird ass again, but less weird ass than Part 1. I feel like you should have to cut off a pinky or something for recommending this one. OK, one more shift, so this is presumably Part 4. (The last one, right?) This is another one of those scratchy record thingy's with a female vocalizing over it, and a guy giving little grunts under it, while discordant jazz plays at the same time. Now there's a bunch of random noise for the big closing, and ... it's over. That was horrible. 1.5
Sorry about that, dedex. |
Divaman
03.20.22 | 10. Kayo Dot - A little false start. Geez, another 10-minute song? You guys are killing me. Yet another song that builds into a big discordant section. Then it slows down and gets quiet. Barely audible vocals. Hmm, this one is Johnny's huh? I should have known. I think I like it better when I listen to these songs in the morning, when I'm still half numb. Are you guys all too young to have ever watched the Addams Family TV show? This guy sings like Morticia Addams. Now he's just screaming a lot. I feel your pain, pal. Did Johnny recommend you a song too? 1.8, because it was just marginally less painful than the last one. What's next?
11. Kishi Bashi - No writeup, huh? Pangea is just going to let the song speak for itself. I like that. Now THIS is more like it. A rustic, folky feel with some actual melody. I feel much less like killing myself. Vocal is OK - not amazing, but serviceable. 3.6
12. K-Rino - I've got a bad feeling about this one, but maybe it will prove me wrong. Grand opening. OK so far. Oh crap, more hip-hop? Actually, this isn't as bad as I feared. The music is pretty repetitive, so it's all about the story. I won't be going back for it, but it's not bad. 2.8

I'd take myself out if I didn't see some other songs I like ahead. Might not be back in April. What the hell has happened to SOTD? I think this might be a passage from the Necronomicron. I hope Deadites don't show up in my living room. Sadly, it's better than much of what I've heard this month so far, even if I have no idea what the fuck he's talking about. 3.0
15. Let me preface this one by saying that although I love We're Only in It for the Money, it's the only Zappa album I own, and there are reasons for that. It started. Oh Dear God. Didn't we put a 10-minute limit on these things? Yeah, this is terrible. How do I compare it to Lil Ugly Mane and Kayo Dot? 03.21.22 | 16. Gareth Liddiard - Acoustic guitar. Kind of monotone vocals. Pretty samey musically. It's all about the story. Unfortunately for him, I'm grading the song as a complete entity, not as a short story. Christ, this is another 16 minute song?!!! What the hell is wrong with you people? You know stories can be SHORT, right? They don't have to go on forever. (My wife, who entered the room about halfway through this one, just commented "This is the worst song ever!" Heh.) 03.23.22 | 23. Sade: Tar baby - Sade sounds like Sade; I often cannot tell her songs apart. This one has an interesting switch up (the "you cut into my life" part), and it's difficult to really dislike her stuff with that voice that sounds like chocolate fondant. Pleasant and probably a treat for genre fans. 3.3 |

03.23.22 | 23. Sade - I agree w/fogza re/Sade's voice. It's so smooth. The song is kind of slow-to-mid tempo and goes down easily. And it's less than an hour and a half long, so that's a definite plus. 3.3 |

03.24.22 | 24. Arab Strap: Sleeper - It was a sad experience listening to this album and having very little emotional reaction to it, as Arab Strap were one of my favourite bands in my youth. This song is ok I suppose but I keep comparing it to their best work and it's just so pedestrian. 3 |

03.26.22 | >Dude strikes out at bar and has homicidal thoughts I guess?

03.26.22 | "Seven Years"
Good bass so far I think. Chill, but maybe a bit generic? The chorus is growing on me though. This is good for sure.
3.9/5
"What Made America Famous"
Folk-pop with strings. Certainly nice. This pickup is so Hunky Dory-era Bowie haha. Not bad, and OOH that string change is neat, wait this got better. Now it's like Station to Station lol. Oh, this is the Cats in the Cradle guys. Yeah good enough.
3.6/5
"Petit Frere"
This is fun. Jazz rap with a lot of turntables. I like this hmmm. If only I liked the rapping more.
3.8/5
"Tar Baby"
Sexy saxophone. This was decent, but not really my thing.
3.2/5
"Sleeper"
Every time these guys are rec'd he's always just talking. Does he ever sing? Creepy so far. Not for me, but not bad.

Hard rocking so far. Don't like those vocals at all. Sounds like Foreigner, but heavier, ew. Sorry.
2.4/5 |
Divaman
03.27.22 | 27. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds - Very noisy intro. Now a kind of driving, railroad beat. Don't love the vocal. A lot of la-la's. Very tongue-n-cheek. It's OK, if overlong. 3.3 |

fogza
03.29.22 | Oh shit I missed that one.
28 (the true 28). Denzel Curry: Walkin' - It's fine for a while and then it feels repetitive (that vocal backing is very overbearing over time as the song progresses), lyrics don't blow me away. It's ok. 3.2

03.29.22 | 15. The Adventures of Greggery Peccary - oh boy do i love listening to random notes for 20 minutes! But yeah for real this was unlistenable to me. It's not like anything is played incompetently, but the entire structure of the song is obnoxious. Having a few ideas for a long song is a good thing, but this can't commit to anything for more than a minute. It makes the song feel like it was constructed using a random number generator. 1.0
ugh the next one is 16 minutes. you're all making it difficult catching up with these long ass songs |
Pangea
03.29.22 | 16. The Radicalisation of D - Boring & long. Vocals are off-putting. Story is good, but you gotta support with the music. 1.8
17. I can definitely appreciate the fuller sound of this more. The instrumentation supports the story pretty well, but i still feel like it could do more. Still don't love the delivery. 2.8 |
ArsMoriendi
03.29.22 | I don’t see how the actual composition of Greggery Peccary is random

03.29.22 | 18. Gangsta's Paradise - I mean it's a classic. Always liked the anthem feel of this one. 4.2
19. Lola - i did always love this one. 4.5
20. 7 Years - Post Punk always manages to sound cool. Yeah this is great, really like the chorus. 3.8
21. What Made America Famous - fun, probably a tad too overdramatic though. 3.0
22. Petit Frère - cool stuff! 3.3
23. Tar Baby - nice but also not very exciting. 3.0 |
Pangea

03.29.22 | "wait you've listened to that twice?"
lmfao |
Pangea
03.29.22 | sorry ars but i don't hear. Maybe the structure reveals itself more on repeated listens, but during my 1.5 listens everything was just frantic to the point i couldn't discern any structure |
ArsMoriendi
03.29.22 | I mean it is complex… maybe to a fault for some. Zappa would often compose his rock songs as if they were classical pieces and I’m pretty sure this is one of those instances. A methodical operation with no room for improv, so I find it so weird people think it’s random
If I’m being honest, I think the lack of variation on that 16 min folk song was considerably tough listen to because my brain was pretty much numb during it. I don’t get how that one has any replay value unless you’re beyond in love with the lyrics |
fogza
03.29.22 | i think i listened to that one four or five times that day, song hit me like a brick in the face. there is a level of connection between the artist and the material in that performance that is hard for me to ignore |
Pangea
03.29.22 | Well i didn't like that one either for what's worth
Eh complexity was not the issue for me. And I know it's not actually randomized, but I felt like it so frantically threw out ideas for, what felt like, every minute, that i found it difficult to attach myself to anything. If we are doing the classical pieces comparison, the pieces there i've heard i feel do a much better job building onto their ideas and slowluly moving into different movement. Like I said, having multiple ideas for a long song is good, but in my opinion you have to let ideas be for a minutes sometimes (and maybe add some elements to it to keep it fresh). The Frank Zappa song felt too scatterbrained to my taste |
Divaman
03.29.22 | 29. The Raveonettes - Sounds like spy music in the beginning, with breathless female vocals. Almost sounds like early Blondie, but with more strummed guitar. It's OK. 2.9 |
fogza
03.29.22 | it is just always so amazing to me how people experience things so differently |
Divaman
03.29.22 | porc, death, we're gonna need a ruling for tomorrow. The song that death recommended has been used previously in SOTD. porc, are you allowing that song to be repeated this month? And if not, death, do you have a different rec for us? |

03.31.22 | "The Face of the Earth"
I sort of already like Emergency and I and Terrified, so let's see how I feel about a sogn from Change. So far good riff. And there's Travis's voice, maybe my least favorite part of the band, but it's not bad I suppose. That pick-up's okay, this seems more direct than the stuff I know from them.
3.5/5
"The Curse of Milhaven"
Wait, I know this one! Fun and catchy intro too. Murder ballads and a violin solo. Whoo. Black Mariah? is that a Tom Waits reference I sense? I hope.
4.1/5
"Walking"
Nice bass and nice soulful voice. Not into this rapping or percussion though. Okay I'm done with this now.
3/5
"Suicide"
Weirdly sexy and corny at the same time hmmm. It got better, now it's all airy and dreamy and kinda electronicish? Is this a story? Good anyway.
3.7/5
"Romeo and the Lonely Girl"
Ooh, that riff immediately caught me. I'm not really looking for 70s hard rock anymore, but if I was, this song makes Thin Lizzy jump to the top of that list. Great solo and drums and vocals. All around good shit. Fuck it.
4.6/5
I'll do the 22 min one soon, but I need a break lol |
ArsMoriendi
03.31.22 | "I Trawl the Megahertz"
Pretty strings. Sadly monologue about divorce...hmmm. I do like how epic this baroque pop piece is. Or chamber pop...whatever same different shut up Johnny. At the 9 minute mark and I am wondering if there's going to be any singing. Like this is good so far, but I don't know the narration is a little plain. Sing for me Paddy! I guess Paddy isn't going to sing. This is pretty still. Maybe a bit overlong...maybe if it was more engaging, but it's still good. Does it justify the length? Honestly maybe actually. 17 minutes in and it's getting really cool and intense. So long, but I like it actually.
3.7/5 |
Pangea
04.03.22 | 25. Reason to Kill - okay enough rock song for the most part, but i'm really not a fan of this type of vocal, it's just really cheesy to me. 2.7
26. The Face of the Earth - Instrumentation is really cool, didn't care for the voice as much. 3.3
28. Walking - I really like the voice sample, very soulful. Pretty good song otherwise too. 3.5
29. Suicide -Kinda dreamy synth poppy stuff, love it. The pieces of guitar very welcome, but the electronic bits are cool too. Love the bouncy chorus. 4.3
? Buenas Tardes Amigo - you know, i have warmed up to spoken word in recent years. But this takes to many breaks between talking. I get inpatient! Electric guitar bit is good. 2.8
30. Romeo and the Lonely Girl - Very fun rock song, great guitar solo. 4.0
31. I Trawl the Megahertz - woo this is beautiful. Does a great job at being engaging for its runtime. 4.5 |
