kraut/kosmiche/berlin school/etc

NOT an essentials list, not comprehensive, just some lesser known things that i think are interesting and worth checking. i am not yet intimately familiar with all of these as most of them are fairly recent finds for me, but found most of them cool enough to want to spend more time with and also to share with you
1GAM
Eiszeit

rec. 1978 / rel. 2005

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f3X1EPrHowI

Shoutout to SharkTooth for his review of this which spurred me on to look into more things. I do agree that it has a fairly different atmosphere and mood to a lot of krautrock stuff that I've heard and it's pretty cool in general.
2Gunter Schickert
Samtvogel

rec. / rel. 1974

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cnEdb8rpyos

Here is the guitarist from the above band, with a release that's strikingly similar to Manuel Gottsching's cult "Inventions For Electric Guitar" recorded the same year - minimalist, hypnotic, trippy. I haven't spent quite enough time with it to say with authority how the two compare, but I think it's safe to say if you like Gottsching's solo albums you should most likely find Schickert's interesting too.

ALSO CHECK INVENTIONS FOR ELECTRIC GUITAR OBVIOUSLY

3Klaus Schulze and Gunter Schickert
The Schulze-Schickert Session

rec. 1975 / rel. 2013

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kp7VHwvRzoY

Of course there was the passing of one of the all-time greats this month, and one of my long time personal favourites. I was previously unaware of this collaboration but I can certainly recommend it today. It is more or less what you would expect, the classic "Berlin School" sound of Timewind and Moondawn (and Phaedra/Rubycon) augmented with the same kind of guitar playing Schickert did on Samtvogel.

R.I.P. Klaus Schulze
4Walter Wegmuller
Tarot

rec. / rel. 1973

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pNjnGPNcAvM

Schulze, Gottsching, Enke, Westrupp, Grosskopf + others.
Something of an ambitious concept album based on tarot created during the Cosmic Couriers sessions (see below).
5The Cosmic Jokers
The Cosmic Jokers

rec. 1973 / rel. 1974

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZzJhoAXLmjM

Schulze, Gottsching, Grosskopf + others
One of several 1974 releases by Rolf Ulrich Kaiser on his label Cosmic Couriers. Recordings are taken and edited from informal jam sessions during acid parties held in 1973.
6The Cosmic Jokers
Galactic Supermarket

rec. 1973 / rel. 1974

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVo_cS_XdL8

Schulze, Gottsching, Grosskopf + others
Same as above. Worth noting Schulze was unhappy with these releases as he wasn't even aware he had been recorded during those sessions. However the music is still interesting.
7Sand (GER)
Golem

rec. / rel. 1974

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ixh1hPx-Bd0

Here's one of the softest, folkiest offerings on this list, one which most likely would have remained entirely obscure had it not been for Current 93's appreciation of it. Klaus Schulze is credited as recording engineer.
8Code III
Planet of Man

rec. / rel. 1974

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgLIB2Puwug

Created in the same studio as the above, this is much more odd. More intended as a test of a new binaural recording technique rather than a regular band recording an album, it's quite out there at times. Klaus Schulze was once again involved in the production and even plays drums on one track.
9Harald Grosskopf
Synthesist

rec. / rel. 1980

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbkC4qJLS8E

I noted him above, he also drummed for Wallenstein, a few minor Ashra/Tempel records and perhaps most notably Moondawn, Body Love and X. His solo debut is a fairly light-feeling melodic take on the Berlin School sound, almost poppy in its accessibility but still fully instrumental.
10Kluster
Klopfzeichen

rec. / rel. 1970

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-et7mJfB2Go

Moebius and Roedelius and Schnitzler. Proto-industrial? Drony noisy weird experimental. Certainly the Cluster duo's work would only become more and more accessible after Schnitzler's departure...
11Conrad Schnitzler
Rot

rec. / re. 1973

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xoiMF8avzFc

...while he would retain the off the wall weirdness.
12Harmonia
Deluxe

rec. / rel. 1975

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVphe18ZlWY

Cluster's Moebius and Roedelius, Neu!'s Rother, Guru Guru's Neumeier.
Fair to say much easier to get into for most people than the two releases above, especially Autobahn fans.
13Moebius and Plank
Rastakraut Pasta

rec. / rel. 1980

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z0svm07Jiso

Trying out a dub influence with Holger Czukay on bass.
14Holger Czukay, Jah Wobble and Jaki Liebezeit
Full Circle

rec. / rel. 1982

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7m2bjYl-SNA

And if that sounded interesting, here's not one but two Can stalwarts and one from Public Image Ltd. going even further in a dubby direction.
15Moebius, Plank and Neumeier
Zero Set

rec. 1982 / rel. 1983

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IR-gKanpvpA

Vaguely techno-esque at times, weird cool dance sound combining real drums and electronics, kinda like 77-81 Kraftwerk on crack in some ways.
16Liliental
Liliental

rec. / rel. 1978

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfw4ZPKH9D4

Moebius, Plank, Okko (A.R. and Machines), Johannes Pappert and Hellmut Hattler (Kraan), Asmus Tietchens
Surprisingly relaxing and restrained compared to most things on here.
17Organisation
Tone Float

rec. / rel. 1970

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IgM-9xB7Q7c

Pre-Kraftwerk (Schneider and Hutter) krautrock jam, no electronics.
18Ibliss
Supernova

rec. / rel. 1972

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0sk9Or9WsCI

Kinda jazzy krautrock jam, Basil Hammoudi was both on this and Tone Float above.
19Kollektiv
Kollektiv

rec. / rel. 1973

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l4YXHLIh6mo

Looks like our sput prog list group got to this one before me. Still, speaking of jazzy jammy kraut jams...
20Exmagma
Goldball

rec. / rel. 1974

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLxS4fRUTkc

Not sure this still counts as krautrock but if you enjoyed the above you might enjoy this too.
21Guru Guru
UFO

rec. / rel. 1970

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mmK6etUMQ0

Surprised there's only 31 ratings for this.
22Agitation Free
Malesh

rec. / rel. 1972

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iai7_F5nZyQ

Surprised there's only 38 ratings for this. Also I thought the name was supposed to be Malesch? Any sandwich bubbles in the chat
23Brainticket
Cottonwood Hill

rec. / rel. 1970

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-clKFoZOBYs

Is it still krautrock if they weren't German? Also the production on this is a bit painful.
24A.R. and Machines
Die Grune Reise

rec. / rel. 1971

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFhcYHIexV8

Some bits are surprisingly straightforward anglo blues/rock. Only a few though, and it does get crazy at other points.
25Kraan
Kraan

rec. / rel. 1972

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bp6UW7aPmbc

At times it's a bit more conventional 70s prog.
26Erlkoenig
Erlkoenig

rec. / rel. 1973

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K_sdSPDyQ6Q

I found this through youtube recs. It's certainly a bit more conventionally anglo blues/rock/psych/prog than most of these.
27Mammut
Mammut

rec. / rel. 1971

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NAicjh5GDM0

Same as above.
28Robert Schroeder
Harmonic Ascendant

rec. 1978-1979 / rel. 1979

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bPpmxmvpDbM

Schulze's protégé does a Berlin School, and there is also cello. Quite agreeable.
29Michael Hoenig
Departure From the Northern Wasteland

rec. / rel. 1978

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SuM_vOBIc6s

Agitation Free member does a Berlin School. Quite agreeable.
30Johannes Schmoelling
Wuivend Riet

rec. / rel. 1986

https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mSkK6eus75Y2uqlR4ZQO89F9mXuhH5Mys

ex-Tangerine Dream (early 80s) member solo album. Quite agreeable.
31Edgar Froese
Aqua

rec. 1973-1974 / rel. 1974

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNWF50faO0s

Mr. Tangerine himself, though this is a lot trippier than Rubycon which seems to have tripped some fans up cuz this underrated.
32Einzelganger
Einzelganger

rec. / rel. 1975

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCsIwjSSjSY

This is Giorgio Moroder who is not German although he did make this while living in Berlin and it does bear obvious similarities to a lot of the electronic here. Not really Berlin School, surprisingly weirder and trippier. If you liked Froese's Aqua...
33Richard Wahnfried
Tonwelle

rec. / rel. 1981

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13Pw0NJnH0o

Schulze side project with Gottsching on guitar and Santana's Michael Shrieve on percussion
34 Sputnikmusic

BONUS:
non-German stuff that worships at the altars of Tangerine Dream and Schulze
