| kraut/kosmiche/berlin school/etc
NOT an essentials list, not comprehensive, just some lesser known things that i think are interesting and worth checking. i am not yet intimately familiar with all of these as most of them are fairly recent finds for me, but found most of them cool enough to want to spend more time with and also to share with you | 1 | | GAM Eiszeit

Shoutout to SharkTooth for his review of this which spurred me on to look into more things. I do agree that it has a fairly different atmosphere and mood to a lot of krautrock stuff that I've heard and it's pretty cool in general. | 2 | | Gunter Schickert Samtvogel

Here is the guitarist from the above band, with a release that's strikingly similar to Manuel Gottsching's cult "Inventions For Electric Guitar" recorded the same year - minimalist, hypnotic, trippy. I haven't spent quite enough time with it to say with authority how the two compare, but I think it's safe to say if you like Gottsching's solo albums you should most likely find Schickert's interesting too.

Of course there was the passing of one of the all-time greats this month, and one of my long time personal favourites. I was previously unaware of this collaboration but I can certainly recommend it today. It is more or less what you would expect, the classic "Berlin School" sound of Timewind and Moondawn (and Phaedra/Rubycon) augmented with the same kind of guitar playing Schickert did on Samtvogel.

Something of an ambitious concept album based on tarot created during the Cosmic Couriers sessions (see below). | 5 | | The Cosmic Jokers The Cosmic Jokers

One of several 1974 releases by Rolf Ulrich Kaiser on his label Cosmic Couriers. Recordings are taken and edited from informal jam sessions during acid parties held in 1973. | 6 | | The Cosmic Jokers Galactic Supermarket

Same as above. Worth noting Schulze was unhappy with these releases as he wasn't even aware he had been recorded during those sessions. However the music is still interesting. | 7 | | Sand (GER) Golem

Here's one of the softest, folkiest offerings on this list, one which most likely would have remained entirely obscure had it not been for Current 93's appreciation of it. Klaus Schulze is credited as recording engineer. | 8 | | Code III Planet of Man
rec. / rel. 1974
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PgLIB2Puwug
Created in the same studio as the above, this is much more odd. More intended as a test of a new binaural recording technique rather than a regular band recording an album, it's quite out there at times. Klaus Schulze was once again involved in the production and even plays drums on one track. | 9 | | Harald Grosskopf Synthesist
rec. / rel. 1980
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbkC4qJLS8E
I noted him above, he also drummed for Wallenstein, a few minor Ashra/Tempel records and perhaps most notably Moondawn, Body Love and X. His solo debut is a fairly light-feeling melodic take on the Berlin School sound, almost poppy in its accessibility but still fully instrumental. | 10 | | Kluster Klopfzeichen

Moebius and Roedelius and Schnitzler. Proto-industrial? Drony noisy weird experimental. Certainly the Cluster duo's work would only become more and more accessible after Schnitzler's departure... | 11 | | Conrad Schnitzler Rot

"Also I thought the name was supposed to be Malesch?" Yes, that's the real title as far as I'm concerned
I will add some of these to my to-check list. Specially 29 because I fell in love with that artwork
Great list buddy! | parksungjoon
05.18.22 | yeah not all of them are for everyone thats for sure
>do i understand it correctly that you did end up making a list of rec just for me?
heh, kinda, its also just recent finds/digs and since im the one who added some of these to the database (and wrote bios for some of the others too) i was hoping to drive some ratings and interest towards that
cheers everybody hope you find something you enjoy | notagenius
05.18.22 | I rolled through the list roughly and chose to listen to Mark Shreeve's Firemusic as a whole.
I have known Krautrock on a cultural level but hadn't listened to it seriously besides Guru Guru, Kraftwerk, neu and Karlheinz Stockhausen. Briefly, I know that it has absolute huge diversity, so it's hard for me to really catch it. they sound different.
For example, that Ralf And Florian album you reviewed and the previous Kraftwerk ones more like belong to the Krautrock category. But what about Autobahn and Radioaktivität Techno? I have no idea. | garas
05.18.22 | > no need to subscribe as im not really planning any updates
Doesn't matter until you keep bringing up interesting stuff like these. Berlin school is (one of) my sweet spot(s), but shame on me for being not knowing the basics... | SharkTooth
05.18.22 | I don't think these are the "basics" though, many of these records are pretty friggin' obscure, especially 1 | notagenius
05.18.22 | not essential ones it is said. 21 and 24 maybe essential.
have to say 36 is pretty good | WeepingBanana

Then more, uh, "diverse" = the better! With my dungeon synth-oriented background in Berlin school, everything will strike as "new", I guess. Hidden gems are always welcomed. | SandwichBubble
05.19.22 | Hi, I'm fashionably late.
