06.27.22 | Cool, I know as long as I dont call it techno I won't get too much shit. I have jammed a few of those like Prodigy and FlyLo (can't say I know the difference between EDM or IDM though or how to quantify the difference) I've also jammed stuff like Eno And Tim Hecker and I like of course I'm just not crazy about them. I will check the other recs to hopefully get a better idea of what I like. |
Ryus
06.27.22 | techno is a real subgenre tho and a very good one |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.27.22 | techno is good
do not try and understand what EDM and IDM mean, this is a boring waste of energy |

06.27.22 | IDM is when i like it because i am intelligent
and yes tessio [∞] |
Drifter
06.27.22 | the whole vocalcity album tho if we're being re@l but tessio is an S+ tier song
that was the album that got me into electronic music too |
Ryus
06.27.22 | 1 is a dubstep album. dubstep has a lot of great stuff
and yeah that whole album is incredible, one of my favs |
ConcubinaryCode
06.27.22 | "do not try and understand what EDM and IDM mean, this is a boring waste of energy"
Surely they're not interchangeable though? Edm=electronic dance music right? Wtf is idm? I'm really just trying to understand what I can associate sounds with for genres tbh. Like house has that general "unce unce unce" thing going on. |
Drifter
06.27.22 | intelligent dance music |
Ryus
06.27.22 | IDM is supposed to be dance music thats slightly more "experimental/complex" in its rhythms and whatnot
EDM is an unhelpful umbrella term of dance music that means very little |
Drifter

06.27.22 | That sounds pretentious af. |

06.27.22 | yeah theyre both just really unhelpful ways of categorizing music |

06.27.22 | good call drift iconic song iconic era |
ConcubinaryCode
06.27.22 | That's kinda why I wanna learn the more in depth descriptors. Like I looked up the electronic section for charts here and it's just so wide you get industrial stuff, soundtracks, even some bm. |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.27.22 | electronic tagging on sput is megapatchy - that tag is generally most useful for artists who are mainly working out of another [rock/pop] genre but work in electronic stylings that don't fully belong to any subgenre. not useless for tagging, but defs not the one you want for referencing. look at subgenre charts |
Ryus
06.27.22 | rym will be more helpful, but still not great. a lot of the best stuff is singles/EPs depending on what subgenres interest you, like if you're into dubstep, jungle, house, techno etc. also DJ mixes can be a gerat find if you're into that kinda stuff. |
ConcubinaryCode
06.27.22 | I'll be real, I don't think I dig house that much. |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.27.22 | house is a big genre
but imo breaks, some (good) idm and trance are all lighter on the ol' attention span. not necessarily 'better', but you may find those better entry points |
ConcubinaryCode
06.27.22 | Yeah, I just went through drifters recs and whistle song was pretty fun but I still got all the other ones you put up to go through. I also liked the moodymann song I jammed but I still gotta do the whole album, I couldn't find dj metatron..
I also thought of Oneohtrix point never. I like them |
protokute
06.27.22 | Try listening to (stuff that came into my head):
The Field - From Here We Go Sublime
Orbital - Orbital 2 (Brown Album)
Biosphere - Microgravity
Zomby - Where Were U In '92
Chicane - Behind The Sun
Lone - Emerald Fantasy Tracks
Caribou - Swim
Leon Vynehall - Music For The Uninvited
Ashra - New Age Of Earth
Leftfield - Leftism
Young Marco - Welcome To Paradise (compilation)
AL-90 - Code-915913
Trancemaster - Neptune's Orb
George Clanton - 100& Electronica
but there's a TON of great stuff that isn't on the album format mostly for stuff for the dancefloor, trance, house, techno, jungle, dnb, try looking for classic mixes/setlists from the 90's and you'll find a lot of gems, and from there, dig up (if that's your kind of thing, but try surrending to it, and maybe you'll have a pretty good time) |
Ryus
06.27.22 | “ I couldn't find dj metatron..”
yea a lot of good stuff isnt on streaming |
JohnnyoftheWell
06.27.22 | just skim everything everyone's rec'd here and jump on anything that catches your ear, dude. find some ballpark of electronic that suits you, dig into it, and just see what happens from there |
Hyperion1001
06.27.22 | drexciya is essential
listen to Neptune’s Lair ASAP |
ConcubinaryCode
06.27.22 | There's also one album I can't remember that was talked up big here once upon a time I liked. The cover was a guy resting his hand under his chin at a piano, I think the album was called its music time or something. |
YoYoMancuso
06.27.22 | michael jackson - thriller |

Drifter
06.27.22 | im by no means an expert or aficionado of house as much as i wish i was but i would suggest going through some soulful house/uk garage & 2 step stuff and finding your niche within those before moving onto the instrumental stuff. go through the long list of classic masters at work mixes and be in bliss

06.27.22 | Yes! Thanks ryus. Appreciate the recs too.
Yeah MO I'm slowly going through the guys discography. He reminds me of Lustmord a little but more easily digestible. I love the low but strong energy it gives off, just slowly trudging along in my ears. Fantastic stuff

Hyperion1001
06.27.22 | hell yeah make sure to check out their entire discog, it’s all classic material.
there’s also drexciya adjacent material by either Stinson or Donald that all good too.
definitely add The Other People Place - Lifestyles of the Laptop Cafe to your list. maybe the most accessible of the drexciya cannon. |
protokute
06.27.22 | Yep, forgot about DJ Rashad |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
06.27.22 | 1. dubstep, garage, ambient
2. four on the floor repetitive electronic that developed out of disco, there are many many styles and a lot of them sound very different and dont have a lot in common aside from that 4/4 kick
3. trip hop is an off-shoot/style of downtempo
4. madlib and j dilla are mostly just hip hop, clams casino has done a lot of styles including cloud rap and trap, both of which have a leg in both hip hop and electronic, but the two genres have a lot of overlap to begin with.
