09.23.22 | Wowza. Can't believe it's been 17 years. My sputnik account is college-aged. Weird. But happy to still be here (despite some intermittent absences over the years).
"Freedom ratings" don't mean much other than provide a highly subjective gage of how... eccentric / unorthodox / extreme / unconventional the albums are relative to one another. (Again, subjective.)
Recommendations for more free jazz always welcome. And fans (or those looking to get into it) will hopefully find something they enjoy here. |

09.23.22 | Danke, chan. Pretty sure I originally joined mxtabs for guitar tabs (I guess i wouldβve beenβ¦15 at the time) and hung around on sput after it βtransitionedβ (merged?) for a few years before basically going totally AWOL for, like, four years. then came back intermittently following that and have tried to remain active for the last ~four years now. the classics never go out of style, I guess! π
Thanks pizza, and thanks for the rec, MoM. Will check soon. |

09.24.22 | Love the album, my favorite Davis behind IN A SILENT WAY, but donβt think it fits the bill for βfree jazzβ or even free jazz tangency. Avant-garde? Sure. But there are still structures, motifs, themes, etc., that are mostly absent (or significantly more sparing) in free jazz. Davis and Shorter go off but the rest of the band keeps things βalignedβ, so to speak. |

09.24.22 | Agreed! Itβs so beautiful. Like a world put into sound |

09.26.22 | Been meaning to dive deeper into some of the jazz so your list definitely has come at a good time and got bookmarked immediately. I enjoy the few here that I've heard.
You are definitely one of the earliest join dates I've seen here still active! Congrats on the 17 years man. Does anyone know the exact time Sputnik came into existence? Also when mx came to be in general? I used to know but that's dissolved from my memory bank over the years. |

09.26.22 | Thanks dedex & Gia.
@Gia: If I were to switch anything, it would be OLATUNJI (5.0 -> 4.5) and KATYUSHA (4.5 -> 5.0). Part of me feels like I might've made a bit of a mistake there. But the OLATUNJI recording is just so...iconic, I dunno, and the way Coltrane transforms two well-known tracks into something almost unrecognizable except for a few short bursts of the motif, its just the epitome of "free" jazz to me. You're not wrong, though, and my goal is to eventually stretch this list into 100 entries, after which I can and will re-assess some of the positioning π
@someone: Will check Trespass Trio. Technically Joe McPhee plays on that The Thing record (29). Not sure why the Sput entry doesn't label it as "The Thing w/ Joe McPhee" which is exactly what's written on the album sleeve lol. But yeah I need to familiarize myself more with his solo discog. The only albums I've heard all the way through are OLEO and AS SERIOUS AS YOUR LIFE but I don't have a rating for either - been too long and/or not familiar enough with them.
@combust: Thanks man, hope you find some good stuff on this list. Hope to expand it to 100 eventually but I didn't want to add anything I haven't rated at least 3.5 or higher, so I'll need to dig a little deeper. Honestly I don't remember much about the inception of this place, I do remember coming to mxtabs.net all the time for guitar tabs, though. And eventually at some point, ultimate-guitar.com kinda took the reins as the best place for tabs. (There was another really popular tab website back then, too, but I forget the name now. 911tabs maybe?) I feel like Sputnik was started as a satellite site (lol) of mxtabs and once mx got usurped by UG, it fizzled out and sputnik remained. |

09.27.22 | "I feel like Sputnik was started as a satellite site (lol) of mxtabs and once mx got usurped by UG, it fizzled out and sputnik remained"
Lol I see what ya did there! It's wild to me that this whole thing spawned from a tab site tbh. I'm glad it all happened as it did though. I love this website.
"Carries both the splendor and the density of a dying star; a tornado of sound - equal parts beautiful and brutal - from which there is no escape."
Goddamn man you were out here killing it with them summaries! Hope you get around to reviewing more. Read through the ones you have and they made me wanna jam each album so now I will! |
