03.01.23 | I got my undergrad in psych and after a few years working in an unrelated industry that requires no degree, i am making more $ than i ever would have as a therapist/social worker
School is a great option for some but it’s not going to fix your unhappiness, and being in more debt certainly won’t help either |
budgie
03.01.23 | what career do you want? psychology isn't really a career outside of research, which means a PhD, and a career in psychiatry needs a medical degree, so with an undergrad in english lit you're a long way off with either of these avenues. maybe figure out what you want to do professionally with psych___ and speak to an institution's academic advisor to put a timeline on your pathways to start determining when this will begin to pay off |
bludngorevidal
03.01.23 | +1 to budgie. But I will say that if you plan on buying a house and supporting children, going to grad school will delay your timeline unless you are supremely financially secure/expecting a windfall/the descendent of US steel barons |

03.02.23 | Based on what I'm seeing here, I would lean towards telling you not to do grad school |
ConcubinaryCode
03.02.23 | Going to school is a noble pursuit but it's usually not monetarily rewarded especially immediately. If money is tight and you can get no funding for it or budget it out I don't think it's a bad idea to put that particular pursuit on hold. |
Calc
03.02.23 | the only reason I did grad school is because it was free. if you're not sure you can foot the bill, like concubinarycode said, its OK to put it on hold. I also feel you on the kid thing. my wife and I had to use IVF. Good on you for having the self-awareness to ask these questions of yourself too. Not a universal trait for sure. |

03.02.23 | Imagine having to pay in order to have an education. |

03.02.23 | imagine putting others down who are less financially fortunate |

03.02.23 | Most PhDs that are worth their salt in USA r free I figure. Certainly not MAs tho |

03.03.23 | Seconding budgie's question about what you actually want to do. From someone who is in very close relationships with many psych / mental health professionals, it ain't nearly what the most idealism suggests - you're feeling unfulfilled now, but most go into that field and may get fulfillment but take on an extreme amount of mental and emotional baggage. This isn't even taking into account the financial side of things (taking on debt, or (more importantly) even the future ability to earn and thusly pay that debt) which tends to add even more strife that is hard to separate from your personal life.
Just my two cents :) |
Borracho
03.03.23 | go to a trade school. refrigerators never stop breaking. advanced degrees are obsolete unless you’re doing something viable in 50 years |
WatchItExplode
03.03.23 | A psychology degree holder here. The degree itself is worth next to nothing. It entitled you to be a lower paid social worker. If you want to make any money in the field of psychology, whether it's therapy, research or some sort of administration, you require an advanced degree. If I could talk to 18-year-old me I would have told myself to stay far away from this field |

03.06.23 | I was debating going into grief psychology because that has been a major interest of mine since my early 20's, but yeah it looks like I would have to take prerequisite courses, then apply to get my masters, then phd which could take like over ten years, then from there I would just get starting again and I would be close to 50.
Ugh. Yeah I'm leaning towards no as of now lol but still haven't made a complete decision on what I'm doing with my life which is kind of weird considering my age, but ::shrug::
Whatever I do, I am just excited to do something different. This was supposed to be a temporary gig while I figured out what I wanted to go to grad school for, now it's like 9 years later and I'm still working on appraisals and loans lol |

03.06.23 | Never too late bud, nothing wrong with changing things up at any age that’s what life’s all about! Excited for your upcoming chapter |
