03.03.23 | Bro that Cru record is so bangin. I think you rec'd that awhile back. I see some Dinah Washington... How into that stuff are you? How experienced with Billie Holiday? |
PotsyTater
03.03.23 | Will do ryus,
Pheromone
@pitchfork yeaa truly an overlooked 90s classic, such a shame it isn’t better known. I dropped $150 on a sealed copy of it over Christmas lmao.
I wouldn’t say I’m an “expert” on vocal jazz but I love it and I grew up with it due to my grandma. I love Billie holiday but I’m only familiar with a few albums. I feel like at least familiarizing yourself a bit with Billie holiday is almost a prerequisite of being into classic hip hop haha |
PotsyTater
03.03.23 | So the only reason I discovered that Cru album is because Just Another Case is playing in the background of a skit at the beginning of Foxy Browns Ill Na Na and I looked up what it was on who sampled that because it was so fuego |
PitchforkArms
03.03.23 | Dude totally agree on all fronts. Seeing as you're pretty familiar (or at least presumably familiar with lots of the more renowned tunes) I would highly recommend some of the earlier stuff where she accompanied some bigger composers + band leaders (mainly Benny Goodman and Teddy Wilson). The Lady Day 1933-1944 compilations are full of it and it's outstanding - less moody blues/lounge feel more big and arrangement focus, even jump-blues sometimes.
I think her rendition of Gershwin's "Summertime" is on there and that is EASILY my favorite version. ugh. Untouchable artist... |
PitchforkArms
03.03.23 | That's dope as hell. It's such a trance-y beat. And that track has so much good trade-off vocally - FU-Schnickens-esque or maybe even a little The Pharcyde but something about it is so singularly interesting and ear-catching. Also... basketball references are great. |
PotsyTater
03.03.23 | I will do just that!
Do you listen to Dorothy Ashby at all? |
PotsyTater
03.03.23 | Oh yeah the way those dudes play off each other is amazing, and it’s really conceptualized too, one of those hip hop albums where the skits actually contribute to the immersion |
PotsyTater
03.03.23 | So many memorable lines, I always have the “phil collins in the background SU SU SUDEO” line stuck in my head |
PitchforkArms
03.03.23 | The harp / soul artist?
I know that the Rendition of By The Time I Get To Phoenix is in a chill playlist of mine, otherwise only very peripherally familiar.
Not totally my thing but I like it. Honestly my barometer on jazz generally is way different than this site - I lose a lot of interest post mid/late-50s. |
PotsyTater
03.03.23 | Hmm well I recently discovered her album The Rubáiyát of Dorothy Ashby which is a 1970 release but it is much different than what you are likely familiar with of her, very middle eastern inspired and psychedelic soul jazz but it’s been blowing my mind lately |
PitchforkArms
03.03.23 | Gotcha - I'll throw it on sometime soon. |
PotsyTater
03.03.23 | Nice man let me know what I think about it |

03.03.23 | 1 and 16 are also current jams. I’ve been listening to Murray for a while now just cause I love anything from the DItC crew but that masters of illusion album is a recent find and it rules |
PotsyTater
03.03.23 | Nice. I listened to 16 many years ago when sput first introduced me to Kool keith via dr. Oct, but I didn’t appreciate it (or Keith in general) as much back then. Last year did a run of Kool Keith’s lesser known stuff and came to appreciate it a lot more. Also found some other Keith gems. Have you heard his album “Ultra - Big Time” with Nate Dogg or his band with Ice-T “Analog Brothers - Pimp to Eat”? |
Hyperion1001
03.03.23 | nope, haven’t heard of either of those but I will change that tonight. good lookin out. |
PotsyTater
03.03.23 | *Tim Dog my bad, from the later part of Ultramagnetic MC’s career, too many dogs lol.
You’ll love those both I’m sure. Analog Brothers is especially something else, full band, ice-t plays keyboards and drums and Keith plays bass lol. A few other dudes but not big recognizable names like ice-t |

03.04.23 | guess they can’t clear some samples because every streaming version of that ultra album is missing like half the tracks.
time to sail the seven seas lmao |
PotsyTater
03.04.23 | The woes of being an old school hip hop fan in the steaming era 😢
I exclusively stream these days, haven’t pillaged an album in years because I mostly listen to music at work with my phone. It’s funny how torrenting used to be the ultimate convenience. But like, downloading and then transferring music to my phone? In the year of our lord 2023!? Haha. When I found that ULTRA album I listened to the incomplete version on Spotify and was about to dust off the ol’ soulseek for it but then saw Get Down coincidently announced a repress a couple days later, so I just ordered that instead. That’s kind of the work around I run with now, if it’s not complete on streaming it’s a priority for a physical purchase. Need to get The Extinction Agenda and Funcrusher Plus next but they are not cheap |
Drifter
03.04.23 | greatest list this year |
Hyperion1001
03.04.23 | my way of consuming music goes like this nowadays:
-stream it, if I like it look to buy
- look for it on bandcamp, usually buy it there
- no bandcamp? Check for downloads on some other site.
- no digital purchase? Look for a used copy that isn’t 2k on discogs
- if there truly isn’t any way to buy it for a reasonable price, I’ll turn to slsk, but that’s only the very last resort.
usually I can find it somewhere. Only a select few albums I’ve actually had to download in recent memory.
|
PotsyTater
03.04.23 | Thank you based drift |
PotsyTater
03.04.23 | @hype good man, I try to go to bandcamp when applicable too. Largely to get the most money in the artists pockets as possible of course but also I love coping a limited signed copy of a new release and that’s the place for stuff like that |
Drifter
03.04.23 | pots just use apple music the local file integration is seamless and you can change artist and album titles and shit when they're messed up or ugly |

03.04.23 | i only know miilkbone for joining death row in the late 90s and being their great value version of eminem to diss him and dr dre. silly shit but it's kind of interesting history lol. ill peep that song i need to just hear the whole album iirc its not that long anyways |
PotsyTater
03.04.23 | Lmao weird. Well this album is nothing like Eminem |
PitchforkArms
03.05.23 | Pots, just so you know, most streaming services allow you to integrate local files in with your streaming library, which is really great of you REALLY want to access stuff via phone that isn’t on Spotify or Apple Music or whatever. Louis Jordan has had nearly all of his best stuff taken off of Spotify so a buddy and I have had to import some CDs to supplement. |

04.03.23 | Quoth me, Ryus’ shoutbox, 4/3/23:
“Guy did arr. on strings horns for ?long and winding road? (Beatles) gets flat fee equiv of $500 2023 USD no royalties never sees another dime. Gets sick of the bulls*** goes one man synth funk band mode.Album 1: bad instrumental synth funk 2/5
Album 2: like 1 but way better 3.5
3: this one. Heat. Sam is the best song but the opener is gas too
4: real good opener. More sophistipoppy. Strong 3
5: mysterious release, guess it?s really a compilation? Doesn?t hit for me 2”
Best shibuyakei I ever heard was today (discovery of OG song was last night). 2002, 2nd track a cover of this, opener great too: Akira Mizumoto |

04.03.23 | What are we even talking about now |
robertsona
04.03.23 | The guy who made “Sam the samba man” was a big shot arranger who was consistently insanely underpaid for his work with artists like the Beatles. He then spent the next two decades going “beast mode” and developing his synth funk craft |

PotsyTater
04.03.23 | To be Frank this NOTO album isn’t really my thing. I haven’t really been feeling the Billy Woods-core in recent years. It’s just very slow, understated, and introspective, while I usually look to hip hop to feel aggressive, confident, and hard or upbeat and energetic depending. I like that bombastic boom bap shit! |
Jash
04.03.23 | That’s fair, you peeped the new Kool Keith album yet?
I’m still on the island, love it here too much to leave tbh |
PotsyTater
04.03.23 | I haven’t, I’m not caught up on much of his recent stuff. Is it any good?
Yeah man island is such a lifestyle, I reeaaally miss it but there just weren’t enough job opportunities for me. I was starting to feel depressed that I wasn’t making any foreword movement with my life, just coasting. But the grass is always greener, now i have a much higher ceiling for opportunity but the price to pay is i don’t have as much fun or freedom. Oh well 😑 |
Jash
04.03.23 | I haven’t yet, just found out about it a couple days ago, thought I’d mention because I know you’re such a big fan of his. Currently checking out that Cru album on your list for the first time, halfway through and it’s so good.
That’s totally understandable, I’m in a very lucky position job wise, but I know so many homies who have had to make that leap. I’ve considered it a few times in the last year as most of my close friends live there, but then I remember how the year I lived in Van left me so emotional empty. If you ever need an island escape hit me up and we’ll do something fun, I live two minutes from the Dep Bay ferry terminal in Nanaimo |
PotsyTater
04.03.23 | Yeah I’m generally pretty cautious about 2010’s + output from golden age rappers, especially ones that have been prolific during that decade to now because they seem to be trying to emulate current trends and it just doesn’t work as a 40+ year old head lmao. So I mostly avoid it. There are of course some exceptions but most of them have been comeback albums after long hiatus’s or post-humous releases that have no business being as good as they are.
Yaaa that Cru album is one of my most coveted underground finds from last year. I dropped about $150 on a sealed copy on discogs as a Christmas present to myself lol. It deserves more love!
Totally, I’m very envious of people in fields where staying on the island is feasible for them. Very blessed. Vancouver can be a very isolating place in comparison. I’ve come to terms with it now because I’m pretty settled down - me and my partner just bought a condo last year and I’ve become a hit of a homebody as my 20’s have come to a close - but I really went through it when I first moved out as a single person here.
I will definitely hit you up if I’m in the area! |
Kompys2000
04.04.23 | What kinds of hip hop are these hip hops also I forget do u fw cunninlynguists at all |
PotsyTater
04.04.23 | Most of what isn’t specified as international hip hop is 90’s or early 00’s east coast hip hop or jazz rap but there are a couple west coast albums on here too
Also I did listen to cunninlynguists a bit when I was in grade 12 but haven’t listened to them in over a decade so I can’t say what my opinion of them would be now |
