07.01.23 | First solid homemade mixtape I made. It was the summer of 2019 and things seemed bad and dire but we’ve all learned better eh friends about the rhythms of this bizarro world we live in. Anyway. Called the mix ZR for whatever reason and gave it to my partner for her birthday — she loved it! And I went on to make many more mixes, some arguably better and some definitively worse. Even this thing has tunes I regret but whatevs still sharing it

07.01.23 | Also wanted to add that the MOST fun I EVER had with a tape — my side b started with a good chunk of Ma Vlast Vltava and then I started breaking it down stretching it into walls of sound so that Coldplay’s Chinese Sleep Chant emerged from the chaos in a way that just *worked*, then slowly cross faded to diiv Like Before You Were Born. Such fond memories: just a dude in a shit apartment sequencing tunes at 2AM and LOVING IT. Tapes are a lot of fun to make tbh I should do another sometime lol |

07.01.23 | How do you even distinguish between what describes your music taste now and what describes your music taste as a timeless whole? And how long is now? How far back would I go? For instance for a long time putting lovely blood flow by baths in this would be a no brainer for me but at this point i haven’t listened to it in years but it’s still not a past moment enough that I can look at it with detachment like music that I would have used to describe myself when I was like 13 |

07.01.23 | @potsy OhhHHH I very much get what you’re sayin. For my part, if I’m ever going to follow through with one of my playlisting whims (which also presupposes I don’t fall out of love with the idea and scrap it weeks in), it is important for me to think of my mixes (tapes, CDs, actual playlists) as snapshots: of a theme, a vibe, songs I’d want to hear on the dark empty road that flow together but are also always held in check by the kneejerk reactor I am lol. Def can be frustrating and even make music at large feel mechanical and wrong for a brief spell. But if you make your own rules and learn how to break them all the time (just lil breaks) idk nights hovering over my tape deck there’s something nourishing/ spiritual about that. I say this tho and have zero desire to go and pour my heart into yet another journey of a tape |
PotsyTater
07.01.23 | @ars is it all stuff that you currently actively listen to or a mixed bag from different parts of you life |
PotsyTater
07.01.23 | @doc haha yeah I try to make those rules and then I make exceptions and then the exceptions spiral and then I eventually feel so far off from the original theme or idea that I just delete it. |

07.01.23 | I have a bunch of super mega giga playlists that are just super broadly themed around a bunch of adjacent genres that are all like weeks long and then I also have a Christmas hip hop playlist that is all hip hop with sleigh bells for hi hats which is like 300 songs long or something but my problem is when I try to make concise playlists that are actually listenable and digestible in a reasonable amount of time haha. Those are the ones I always abandon. |

07.01.23 | "This is also why I can’t rate music earnestly "
Genuinely I think no one can. At least 'objectively".
There are so many factors that come into play with this shit that aren't just objectionable quality of music/artistic merit and it's one of my favorite things but also something that I definitely get tripped up/frustrated with--How can this person whom I can see has some good taste and has at least made attempts to explore music outside of spoonfed bullshit also adore an album I think is diarrhea so much? How can they think an album I adore so much is diarrhea? Even among people whomsts music taste I can respect, and pretty much if you're frequenting a community like this you probably care about music enough to have formulated some kind of okay taste outside of the most basic poo, There's always shit where I'm like what in the fuck? Or I'll love something that will get a similar what in the fuck reaction, everyone's pipeline for how they got to their current music taste is so different for so many different reasons and it all adds up to such different shit, so much emotional unscientific reasoning that will never be able to be explained. |

Case in point, this is a fantastic list displaying a very wide range of influences/tastes that I can appreciate, there's a couple albums in here that my kneejerk reaction would be "that's dogshit" but in reality, seeing everything else and knowing this person has some good taste, I'd just have to be like "I just don't get that one/it's not for me" |

ArsMoriendi
07.01.23 | Artistic merit, like most things in art is subjective yeah
Complexity, difficulty, originality, emotional salience, timbre, humor, lyrics, dissonance, melody...people value different things and none of it really sets a standard, though I guess your average person really appreciates patterns and non-harshness, which I guess is why "pop" is the way it is |

07.01.23 | ahhh bless you I appreciate you. Definitely agreed.
I'm enjoying this community, it took me a minute to feel out the vibe but I really appreciate seeing someone tear someones asshole open in one thread and then be really civil and kind to the same person in another or the same thread, there's something really sterile and boring about communities where everyone is overly nice and un-opinionated and fakes like they kind of like everything, but also, as easy as it is to get overly defensive about this stuff because it can have such an emotional connection, it's perfectly fine that people don't like the same shit and are honest about it. |

Considering making a playlist that accurately summarizes your music taste is a direct extension of your personality it’s going to be more or less deep or challenging from person to person and everything is valid |

This is so unnerving, you put one of the most annoying songs of all time right next to a peak Cave cut 😆 … I could’ve picked a Cave track but ‘too soon’ in my journey (although there are a ton of omissions obviously). |

07.02.23 | Ectier nice list, the mixtape police are gonna swoop in on that double Opeth though, even if they are polar opposite Opeths.
Respec for the When choice though, I feel like MAYH gets snubbed for Still Life too often. |
PotsyTater
07.02.23 | Izakaya might have the best playlist now
Savoury insanely based pick, I don’t know if it would end up on mine now but in my early 20s it would have been a sure shot |
ArsMoriendi
07.02.23 | "4. PJ Harvey - Down By The River

07.02.23 | Savory's a big nostalgia pick for me. Don't listen to too much post-hardcore these days but whenever I'm in the mood that album's a go-to |
veninblazer
07.02.23 | "Ectier nice list, the mixtape police are gonna swoop in on that double Opeth though, even if they are polar opposite Opeths."
tbh with opeth i give a pass to completely different eras like that. its mostly just a hard mode to keep the mixtape from being like, one album from one band lol. |

07.03.23 | Fear Before - Mouth
Missed this at first but top tier pick, probably would have included something from this album had I thought of it.

07.03.23 | Looking through summa these
Iyazaka I literally almost put Do the Astral Plane on mine lol! So damn groovy, and so much tight-as-hell interplay between melodic layers |
Ectier
07.03.23 | It was really hard for me. I wanted to do a sort of a theme with songs going from light and bright into darker more depressing thing as it went on. I gave up |
PotsyTater
07.03.23 | Do the astral plane is definitely a s-tier flylo pick |
robertsona
07.03.23 | Do the Astral Plane is everything, and it’s insane that it comes after MmmHmmmmm. I dunno, sometimes I feel like “MmmmmmHmmmmm” would be like the best thundercat track instantly if it were somehow on one of his albums, though the best album of the decade behind of course the hotelier would be missing a centerpiece and suddenly one of the thundercat albums would have a song that’s way better than almost everything else |
Demon of the Fall
07.03.23 | 'Fear Before - Mouth
Missed this at first but top tier pick, probably would have included something from this album had I thought of it.'
I thought it was the obvious 'single pick', not necessarily my fave these days but I do still love it |
ShapeOfJizzToCum
07.03.23 | Always Open Mouth is lightyears ahead of its time and it blows my mind more today than it did when I first got into it.
@Ectier And My Arms is my preferred as well, but it was also my first Opeth and probably the first real album with harshes that I got into so it's p special to me. |

07.03.23 | @shape My Arms and Somewhere along the highway are two of my faviourite albums of all time and they both have a similar the.e of lonliness and longing. My Arms has a load of great cuts beyond Demon of the Fall (tho they are a pretty swell dude) |
