07.22.23 | Just came back from the cinema. First impression is that it's a very important film, at least to me. The obvious: the acting is phenomenal, music is amazing, cinematography is subtle but effective, dialog is pretty great and the writing amazing as always, although I do get if people find it overlong, especially the last hour.
The reason it feels important to me is that this is the first time that I really understand the capability we humans have to destroy the world. Like I've always known of course but the ramification of what that actually means have never been driven home quite this way. Heard a quote somewhere that describes it perfectly: I don't know with which weapons ww3 will be fought with, but ww4 will be fought with sticks and stones.
I'm very impressed by the movie overall, to the point where right now I will feel it will end up in my top 10 favorite movies I've ever seen, but in the way Das Leben Der Andern is in there, not in the way Inception is.

07.23.23 | really unimpressed by the movie. I've read a few books about the manhattan project and they were infinitely more interesting than this film. I get that Nolan had to keep the focus on his main character but as portrayed by this film, Oppenheimer appears to be a boring man surrounded by the exciting events of his day. |

07.23.23 | Seeing it tonight. Expected very little at first cause Dunkirk was mid and Tenet was laughably bad, but good lord this movie is getting it's dick sucked reception-wise |

07.23.23 | This is about as close as a return to form as we're gonna get. Was much more engaging than Dunkirk as a historical piece and genuinely felt like a good movie. 07.23.23 | @grannypantys seems ^Scheumke is the target audience not us. for those in the know yes it felt VERY didactic and dry. Cilian does his best to carry it but god damn, Nolan you're not Terrance Malick. Nolan really needs to let somebody else pen his characters and dialogue.
And why is a brit auteur the one canonizing our great American mythos? It's not a grand metaphor about the crisis of modern man or the individual - Herzog could've done something interesting - it really is just DYK McCarthyism?!? and boy he sure did wring those hands afterwards huh?
As an adaptation based on a true story it's kind of fascinating- imagine the Brechtian alienation effect of watching a parralel universe equivalent set in Germany where one genius is so consequential- but this story is already much larger than life, than History, than myth, it's become a memetic hyper-myth that I didn't feel rose to meet that operant registry
I'm glad it's finding it's audience but like, Andrew Dominik 'Blonde' from last year is a good close comparison imo and it somehow had more to say and with more depth than this |

Hyperion1001
07.23.23 | “for those in the know yes it felt VERY didactic and dry.”
this is Nolan’s entire career. his whole thing is making “smart” movies aimed at an audience with room temperature IQ’s, so anything that has the potential to say or do anything interesting is diluted with so much dorky overwrought melodrama that it kills any potential it had to be something with substance.
almost everything he does boils down to just being complete nonsense wrapped in a shiny package. interstellar is the worst offender, but they’re mostly all like that. his two best movies are the prestige and insomnia, and beyond that it’s just low brow entertainment cosplaying as something Important™ |

Nuclear proliferation is the single reason why we haven't had any major wars since WW2 so calling it the biggest sin we've committed is a pretty uninformed viewpoint |
Scheumke
07.23.23 | Nuclear proliferation is also the single reason why we are only going to have one more major war for the entirety of our species until we figure our a way to live on another planet though. Ww2 was less than a hundred years ago yet we'll have that sword above our heads for the foreseable future though won't we? That shit scares me more when thinking that the people who have this power are not the most mentally stable leaders we've ever seen. I don't know and I get the criticism you guys are having but that point just got to me while watching it. |
JohnnyoftheWell
07.23.23 | Was struck above all by the bloodlessness of the thing - thought the way the whole affair was firmly estranged from actual violence and v much enmeshed in the pettiest aspects of US policymaking was just about cogent enough to demand such elaborate narration
"almost everything he does boils down to just being complete nonsense wrapped in a shiny package"
babe don't get on your high horse about Nolan and room temp IQs (not something I'd otherwise disagree with) and then trot out the laziest generalisations on offer about the man's entire body of work. anyone smart enough to form a realistic set of expectations will be walking into this as an all-star effort to bring fresh stakes and tension to popular history, not as a groundbreaking exhibition of fresh insight |

07.23.23 | Dunkirk felt like an examination of the debilitating effect of tension and anxiety from inaction, just such a unique way to approach a war movie |
Jasdevi087
07.23.23 | for whatever reason, Dunkirk has just never made me feel much of anything, though I agree I like it's approach. I have a weird bias for WWI movies over WWII movies for some reason, idk why lol (with Das Boot being a notable exception) |
rabidfish
07.23.23 | Wanting character development from a script that makes its protagonist say "I am the protagonist"... Makes you look stupid. I celebrate that the only attempt to give some soul to the plot is done so poorly and comes from a character so useless and stupid she almost dooms all humanity because "muh feelings". I celebrate it not because I agree or think it's good (it's pretty fucking evil) but because it is purposeful and spiritually consistent. To Nolan emotions are evil. TENET is almost 100% purely gnostic. The ideas and images in it are done with so much purpose and vision (a dark vision, sure) I can't help but feel admiration. Dude is on a mission with his art. Expecting emotion and humanity from someone who clearly is showing active despise for all human emotions is self defeating. Only the ascended individual (and by that I mean MAN) is the one who can bring salvation. Everyone else (and all women, btw) get bent.

rabidfish
07.23.23 | Its a left hand path wizard making a gnostic psy-op. But I like it, it was pretty fun. I can get behind the idea of instinct as crucial to understanding of deep nature of reality. And the action scenes are cool, I don't know what you mean by them being bad. That's just hatin now. |
TalonsOfFire
07.23.23 | Tenet was fun in a big spectacle mind-bending action movie way like James Bond meets Inception, but Dunkirk was incredible, my favorite war movie. Was so immersive and beautifully made. Oppenheimer was pretty amazing too, deserves all the Oscars imo |
ArsMoriendi
07.24.23 | Solid 3.5/5 movie
Don't love Oppenheimer's predictable Nolan "always out of order to piece together a mystery" "a third of the movie is in black in white" overreliance, but it was still entertaining, the acting was mostly good etc though the way Oppenheimer was sort of deified was kinda lame |

07.24.23 | "Haven't watched Nolan since DKR but all I remember he had a fit about streaming killing cinema and that just made me hate him."
Tbf he basically spent years and the studio spent millions and then then their distribution plan was the equivalent of a straight-to-DVD release. He's said some dumb shit but I'd have been pissed too about that.
Also DKR is arguably his worst film, probably a valid reason to hate him lol |
CaliggyJack
07.24.23 | I don't hate him, just his movies haven't interested me.
I get it, but launching a tirade about streaming like a tone deaf millionaire grinds me up.
Theaters are gouging prices, treating their workers like shit, with customers routinely getting out of control with noise. Not to mention driving there, and the effort needed for people with disabilities. Or neurodivergent people who can't deal with loud noises and crowded spaces.
These anti-streaming directors can take their "Theater Experience" and shove it up their ass. |

07.24.23 | Love you too pots but I know I'm right one this one. I'll give you that the pit sequence in DKR is garbage but it doesn't derail the movie. No-one is going to sell me that the boat moral dilemma at the end of DK is good, or anything about the two face resolution, or Bale checking out of the movie halfway through (although if I had to respond to the somewhere over the rainbow scene I'd check out too) |
rabidfish
07.24.23 | The boat moral dilemma just serves a narrative purpose to put Joker's DIY aesthetic pitted against Batman's next gen surveillance tech. Tech wins over loser terrorist. Id bet if it was for Nolan's sake, he wouldn't even have those scenes on the 2 boats. He don't give a shit about that moral dilemma, the real issue is with what Batman and the Joker represent (immoveable object and unstoppable force) |
fogza
07.24.23 | the only thing worse than the boat scene was that whole "we must protect harvey dent's legacy or the city will explode" finale (as if), together with that terrible monologue. at least in the dark night rises, the threat was literally that the city would explode |

07.24.23 | I thought it was consistent with what the movie is about and what the overall batman mythos is about, tbf |
