09.03.23 | Hey nice alt Casavir |
Space Jester
09.03.23 | Oh my apologies, Cas would never put Sigh or a Dan Swano project on a rec list |
JohnnyoftheWell
09.03.23 | ^two out of three of my first thoughts on seeing this
(the third was "wow someone finally pulled cas' head out of his arse") |
Casavir
09.03.23 | Silent Fall owns hard |
JDubb
09.03.23 | ...really dated prog metal. Prog metal has "progressed" past most of these bands, several fold. Even Fates Warning - "Disconnected" was 5 times the better of "Awaken the Guardian". |

09.03.23 | All good. |
Casavir
09.04.23 | "Even Fates Warning - "Disconnected" was 5 times the better of "Awaken the Guardian"."
They're not even the same subgenre of metal |
JDubb
09.04.23 | That’s true - cause prog metal morphed. For example, Just look at the variability across Pain of Salvation’s discography. Can’t say I love where it’s gone - into more prog rock territory like recent Leprous. |
Spag
09.04.23 | Great list, 26 is an all time favorite of mine. |

You're still comparing prog alt metal to a prog/power album. Stuff in the vein of Awaken the Guardian continued to be made long after it. |
Space Jester
09.04.23 | No modern prog metal bands are putting out anything nearly as good as most of this list. The genre might've morphed but it learned all the wrong lessons |
JDubb
09.04.23 | Will not deny that I fall in the prog alt metal camp. Would take Tool over Dream Theater (both not on this list) any day. |
ShapeOfJizzToCum
09.04.23 | grandpas lists. |
ShapeOfJizzToCum
09.05.23 | Several of these bands might be good if they hadn't made it illegal for metal bands to have good vocals like pre-1998. |
Casavir
09.05.23 | At least half of this list has GOATed vocals wdym |
JDubb
09.05.23 | It took until ~1998 for the prog metal bands that started in the 80’s to figure out that their vocals were losing them new fans. I have a real hard time stomaching 80’s-style vocals. |
ShapeOfJizzToCum
09.05.23 | I can't listen to the vast majority of 'classic metal,' prog or otherwise, because the vocals are so completely dogshit and sound like a literal joke. I really feel like you have to be ~of that time~ to get it, and I was born in 1988 and still think it's mostly dogshit. |
ShapeOfJizzToCum
09.05.23 | "No modern prog metal bands are putting out..."
OK Boomer |
JDubb
09.05.23 | This is no boomer prog metal list. That would include King Crimson, early Rush, - perhaps Iron Maiden. This is an early generation X prog metal list. With that said, I feel that most on this thread would dig Haken, a recent prog metal band with strong ties musically to that era and DT…and that is, Vocally, more up-to-date. |

Some of the vocalists on this list aren't even that far removed from Gildenlow since we're bringing up Pain of Salvation. Hell, the cleans that Minas Tirith album has aren't that dissimilar from Akerfeldt, they just take way more actual chances than he does. |
JDubb
09.05.23 | That was me that brought up PoS. And I totally agree on Gildenlow/early PoS. Opeth falls in a prog category all their own. |
Casavir
09.05.23 | I don't think they much fall in a category of their own at all. Just like Opeth, Minas Tirith's cleans don't exactly have much roots in '80s metal |
Space Jester
09.05.23 | I listened to the entire Haken discography at the behest of a coworker and I’m sad to say it was not a pleasant experiment for me. Affinity and Vector were much more tolerable than the stuff before that tho, I think those were the latest ones out at the time |
JDubb
09.05.23 | Vector and Virus are my favs. Less DT like wankery than earlier albums. |
Emim
09.05.23 | Great list, definitely was expecting to be disappointed |
