| 10 Songs Describing Depression
Songs that you can relate to if you have or had depression | 1 | | Car Seat Headrest Teens of Denial
Fill In the Blank
This whole album is pretty relatable if you've ever experienced anxiety or depression and this intro song sums it up nicely. Will's sick of pretty much everything in his life, feels like he isn't moving forward and constantly questions if he has the right to be depressed, considering he has a pretty decent life. In the below lines he explains how difficult it is to answer questions about it because you're just not sure of the answers.
"So you'll ask 'Why?' and there will be no answer
Then you'll ask 'For how long?' and there will be no answer
Then you'll ask 'What can I do?' and there'll be no answer
And eventually you will shut up" | 2 | | Mitski Puberty 2
Fireworks
A lot of people think depression is just sadness, but really it's mostly a numbness. Mitski emphasises that in this song, talks about how you just go through the motions and explains how that often you'll be reminded of times you weren't depressed, before you felt desensitized to everything around you.
"One morning this sadness will fossilize
And I will forget how to cry
I'll keep going to work and you won't see a change
Save perhaps a slight gray in my eye" | 3 | | Little Simz No Thank You
Broken
A lot of people with depression just feel broken. They feel like their life is done and they have little to no value to people around them. Little Simz puts emphasis on this and explains how not talking about mental health can be very detrimental.
"Smoking weed on your ones, isolating yourself
Am I even enough? Then you question yourself
Man, this week has been tough, been saying that for a year
How do I disappear? Can I hide from my fears?" | 4 | | Weyes Blood Titanic Rising
Something To Believe
Some days start off really well and by no means at all, an emptiness creeps in. Weyes talks about that here. She talks about how she yearns for something to drown out the voices in her head and is in a constant battle to try and make herself feel better.
"Drank a lot of coffee today
Got lost in the fray, I gave all I had for a time
Then by some strange design I got a case of the empties
The ruler of my world, a lost forgotten pearl" | 5 | | The The Soul Mining
This Is the Day
This song describes a person stuck in a depressed routine, hoping their life will change and they'll be happy again. They hold onto their memories, but that's all they are, just memories, and they cannot bring them back.
"You could have done anything, if you wanted
And all your friends and family think that you're lucky
But the side of you they'll never see
Is when you're left alone with your memories" | 6 | | Belle and Sebastian If You're Feeling Sinister
If You're Feeling Sinister
The title track of this album really sums up how lost one can feel with depression. It describes two suicidal people, one who wants to kill himself because it sounds more exciting than living and another who finds everything around her uninteresting so she tries religion that just ends up confusing her more.
"The church up on the hill is looking lovely
But it doesn't interest, the only things she wants to know
Is how and why and when and where to go
How and why and when and where to follow" | 7 | | Charli XCX How I'm Feeling Now
I Finally Understand
Charli does a great job describing how living with depression can be intervined with your love life. She loves her partner, but not herself and even though he is there to comfort her, she can't shake this bad feeling.
"I finally understand, finally understand
My therapist said I hate myself really bad
You tell me it's fine, let me cry and hug it out" | 8 | | Yeule softscars
Sulky Baby
From their newest album, Yeule describes a lot of the same feelings as the above songs, emptiness, suicidal thoughts, wanting comfort, but distancing yourself away from it.
"Sweetness undefeated
I feel your warmth, but I evade it
I wanna eat your face
Can you get me out of this maze?" | 9 | | The Velvet Underground The Velvet Underground
Candy Says
This song deals with gender dysphoria and the conflicting feelings that it brings, but is relatable to depression as well. Candy doesn't want to be herself, the "blue birds" or happiness evade her, and she dreams of a better life.
"I'm gonna watch the blue birds fly
Over my shoulder
I'm gonna watch them pass me by
Maybe when I'm older, what do you think I'd see
If I could walk away from me?" | 10 | | Lil Ugly Mane Volcanic Bird Enemy and the Voiced Concern
Discard
The simplest things in life (like taking out the garbage and work) can feel like they drain all the energy out of you when you are depressed. Travis emphasizes this, he feels like he is a burden to the world and is never having any fun (numbness).
"Have a tendency to promise shit
That I can not accomplish
Like the energy to take the garbage
Out of my apartment
I'm the enemy of progress
I just wanna be discarded" | |

10.10.23 | Songs like this are very important | bellovddd
10.10.23 | into the ocean - Blue October. shits unreal.
I'm just a normal boy
That sank when I fell overboard
My ship would leave the country
But I'd rather swim ashore
Without a life vest, I'd be stuck again
Wish I was much more masculine
Maybe then I could learn to swim
Like 14 miles away | pizzamachine
10.10.23 | Between a deep recession and depression | VaruunZealot
10.10.23 | Nina Nesbitt - The Hardest Part. Only song that ever made me cry | MoM
10.11.23 | William Basinski’s Disintegration Loops (all of them) fascinated me, but also hurt in how much they reminded me of my depression (haven’t been depressed in years, thankfully). Just wave after wave of the same loops, the same patterns, washing over and out, gradually feeling more tired, too familiar but not wanting it to be too different, aging and withering and decaying, disintegrating, in the same sea and ot goes on and on, and when it’s over, it’s over. All this shit’s only over when it’s over. | AmericanFlagAsh
10.11.23 | Oh yeah the Disintegration Loops are haunting | DoofDoof
10.11.23 | got to love seeing 5 here...in fact a lot of that album would have fit the list title | AmericanFlagAsh
10.11.23 | I love that song so much, as depressing as it is, makes me want to break out of routine more often | DoofDoof
10.11.23 | Have you ever listened to the bonus track 'Perfect' - that's a good one to wander about town and think about it all ;)
How much The The have you listened to? Just the best song writer, seen earlier today that Matt Johnson has announced a tour with tickets on general release this Friday. Never seen him perform live, might have to go whatever the cost. | AmericanFlagAsh
10.11.23 | I've just listened to Soul Mining, I should check some of the other stuff | BigTuna
10.11.23 | Good list! Sad but good. Some others for me:
Phoebe Bridgers - "Funeral"
Sufjan Stevens - "The Only Thing"
The Wonder Years - basically their whole discog but "Low Tide" off their latest album really encapsulates how I experience depression | DoofDoof
10.11.23 | 'I've just listened to Soul Mining, I should check some of the other stuff'
definitely, absolutely on a par with 'This is the Day' are: Heartland, The Mercy Beat, Into the Blue, The Whisperers, Slow Emotion Replay, Dogs of Lust, The Beaten Generation, Kingdom of Rain
so many classic songs | alamo
10.11.23 | I wanna feel like I feel when I'm asleep | Romulus
10.12.23 | "discard" (and the whole album) is such a perfect example | 4N4LB34D5
10.12.23 | Failure - "Blank"
god damn i have never related to a song more than this one in terms of depression. just feeling totally numb to everything, good or bad. feeling completely isolated from friends/family/humanity. and in a sick way, kind of loving it and taking comfort in it.
I kinda like the blank way
I fill up my life
I don't care for nothing
That gets me too high
I want some dampened spirits
And black and bitter spoons
I'm not looking for reflection
I'm living on the moon | Trebor.
10.12.23 | Carissa's Wierd - So You Wanna be a Superhero | AmericanFlagAsh
10.12.23 | Oh yes Funeral by Phoebe breaks me | alamo
