| Deweekly: January 1st to 10th
My wife asked me a couple of days ago: "What are your resolutions for this year 2024?" I stopped for a moment, and I felt the Void speaking back to me, my eyes turned upside down, my brain veins started pumping heavily and blood started dripping from my nose and ears. Then I answered: "My resolution is to listen to 1300 new releases in 2024". Believe it or not, we're still married. Rules / FAQ in the comments. | 1 | | Dunwich Ritual The Weird Tapes Sessions
Jawbreaker Records // Speed Metal
Dunwich Ritual are a French speed metal four piece that have just signed with Swedish label Jawbreaker Records. The label has released their back catalogue (three demos, I believe) on this sort of compilation. The production is rough (they are demos after all), and the execution a bit sloppy at times, but there's definitely potential here, If you're into bands like Smoulder, you'll dig this.

Self released // Stoner Rock
Sixth album from this one-man project from Argentina (I think they are a band now?). They also honour that peculiar tradition of releasing albums yearly and on January 1st or close, so even if I didn't know they were putting out a new one, I was not surprised when I saw it on BC. Instrumental stoner with a spacey vibe, nothing revolutionary but it's always a good time. This new one has a bit more of a gothic post punk influence, don't really know why.

Goatsword Studios // Black Metal
One man project from this Norwegian settled in Canada who spawned a total of 14 releases between splits, EPS and long plays since the project's inception in 2019. This has the right amount of rawness and adds a few synths and samples here and there. And of course, stars with a storm...

Self released // Drone / Ambient
Solo project of Odi Suood, from Dubai. I remember hearing their release from 2021, I think that was the first release under this new moniker. Before they used to release music as Odi, leaning more towards IDM. It's soothing and a nice palate cleanser in between metal albums.

Surf Club / STB // Hip Hop
Unexpected surprise to be honest. Of the five albums I checked today this was the one I enjoyed the most. Produced by Hit-Boy and featuring West Coast veteran The Game and Hit-Boy 's own pops, Big Hit, this is supposed to be the biggest release of this week if numbers of ratings are meant to be trusted. I'm still a hip hop pleb, meaning I know almost nothing of the genre so can't really judge the bars, the flow, etc, but I did enjoy the bases and Hit-Boy's production on this.

*** ALBUM OF THE WEEK ***
City Slang // Punk / Alternative Rock
The singles got me mildly hyped about this one. "Letter to Self" is the debut album of Dublin's garage punk four-piece Sprints. The singles do sound great in context but the album suffers a bit from lack of variety. Karla's vocals are the strong point of this album. She has this visceral singing style that reminds me of someone... that I can't recall right now. Production is neat and this debut it's a great starting point for them. Very curious to see where they go from here.

Gatoencerrado / Svdestada // Spanish Blackened Neocrust
Or so their bandcamp says. Third full length from this atmoblack post hardcore band from Madrid (Spain). Definitely worth checking if you like bands like Joliette (they also sing, well, shout in Spanish). The cover art sold me on this and they bring a very dark Spanish folklore aesthetic that I think works great with their music. I immediately thought of fellow staffer Marsbro when I heard this.

Sentient Ruin Laboratories // Death Metal
First release from one of my favorite labels and oh boy, it's a trip. Aberration (not to confuse with the other 12 Aberrations out there) features members of Nothingness, who you might remember from putting out a total ripper of an album just last year and the bass player/vocalist of Suffering Hour. On the other hand, Diabolic Oath I have no idea who they are or where they come from but you might have heard their first album in 2020 (I haven't, but I shall). This is a split of two tracks that harbingers both bands' new releases this year so be prepared.

The Tabula Rasa Record Company // Drum & Bass / Ambient House
I guess you all know this one judging from the comments on the January releases post in the staff blog, but yeah, New York producer doing bouncy, glitchy, frantic, electronic wizardry. Pretty much not my comfort zone but I did enjoy a first pass. I may return to a couple of tracks but the whole album was a bit overburdening for me.

Self released // Funeral Doom
Exactly one year ago, Raffaele Galasso, the man behind this project and many others, released the first part of "Il Suono di Mille Orchestre", which was his second album under this moniker. At the time it didn't occur to me but with this second part, I couldn't stop thinking about Mizmor almost the entire time. Not that it's a bad thing, and while Mizmor might diverge into black metal blast beats more often than not, their vocal approach sounds quite similar. Shamael sticks to the funeral doom tag religiously though, adding acoustic passages that serve as beacons in this otherwise very dark and oppressing album.

Self released // Progressive Rock / Art Rock
Daniel Cupps is a multi-everything composer and producer from Philadelphia with 13 plus albums under the name of Good NightOwl plus different credits in other bands and even in TV media. I've never heard the music of Good NightOwl until now but it seems this new album is quite the departure from his previous recordings. Think Leprous with a bit of Steven Wilson or even far reaching a bit of Yes and you'll get the idea.

Delayed Gratification Records // Hardcore
Blackened hardcore from Ohio with a bit of melodic death metal sprinkled into the mix. This is the band's debut after a series of demos and a split. Really fun stuff considering I'm not that much into hardcore stuff, or at least not as much as the days of Strife, Madball, Biohazard and all that, but this one kinda put me back in the mood. First two tracks are really good.

UnLearn The World LLC. // Hip Hop
Is Hip Hop gonna be my revelation genre this year? Well this is the second hip hop album I'm really enjoying in only the first week of releases this year. Weird. Eastern Hip Hop this time, from this 90s veteran NYC producer and rapper. The list of features on this album will give you shivers, including names like Ghostface Killah, Royce Da 5'9 and Benny The Butcher.

Highlight: God's Favorite | 14 | | Narbeleth A Pale Crown
Folter Records // Black Metal
Black metal from Cuba. Ok, I'm sure this is a first for me. Narbeleth are a black metal duo from La Habana that are currently based in northern Spain. Funny enough these guys sound more Norwegian BM than any Norwegian BM band I've heard in recent years. If they are aiming to reproduce verbatim the sounds of the second wave I'd say they achieve that without reinventing the wheel. It's a safe bet if what you're looking for it's unadultered black metal in the ways of old.
Highlight: To Step Beyond the Veil
https://folterrecords.bandcamp.com/album/a-pale-crown | 15 | | One-Eyed Monsters Ambrosia
Mystery Shop Records // Stoner Rock / Psychedelic Rock
Surprisingly enjoyable stoner rock record with a bit of psychedelia infused into the mix, and I say surprisingly enjoyable cause the other stoner records I've heard this week they were all... of debatable quality. This one manages to grab you with enticing melodies and rich instrumentation (percussion, hammond, all those psyche things). Vocals are doubled and shared between the two guitar players which also gives it an interesting character. It's only 34 minutes long so worth a quick check if you're in the mood for pothead rock.

https://one-eyedmonsters.bandcamp.com/album/ambrosia | 16 | | Cancer Christ God is Violence
Seeing Red Records / Sweatband Records // Groove Metal / Grindcore / Hardcore Punk / Thrash
Shock hardcore band led by a bloody Christ impersonator that goes by the name of Saint Anthony, who's credited in their bandcamp page as "vocals, flamethrower", and a bunch of "snakes" that act as the nameless ghouls would do in Ghost. Actually, this all looks too familiar. Music wise this is very reminiscent of good ol' Suicidal Tendencies, Municipal Waste being taken to histrionic levels of violence and nihilism. It's not bad, it's not great either, but it's definitely worth a check.

Zazen Sounds / Brilliant Emperor / Third Eye Temple // Black Metal
I was looking forward to this one. Big fan of "For Thine Is the Kingdom of the Flesh" which they released almost at the end of 2022 and like almost all things in December it didn't get as much attention as I wanted to give it. This new release is an EP but it rounds up at 30 minutes so there's plenty of material here. After a first listen, and having jammed the two singles they had out for the last week, I gotta say this is not as good as their 2022 album, save for the closer which is magnifique (because it's a Bathory cover, dewi, you fucking idiot)! It kinda loses itself in a constant assault of blast beats and trems with unrelenting screaming and there's practically no respite and the melodic side of it gets lost in the maelstrom making it quite difficult to grasp. Lovely artwork though.

https://krvna.bandcamp.com/album/the-rhythmus-of-death-eternal | 18 | | L'Ame Immortelle Ungelebte Leben
Napalm Records / Trisol Music Group // Gothic Industrial / Darkwave
Threw this one on to have some variety among the metal. Veteran Austrian darkwave and industrial band from the 90s who peaked in the 00s and that are somehow still kicking. The album is alright for the most part, but some tracks are an absolute calvary to get through ("Regret", "Push", "Own Ways"), partly due to Sonja Kraushofer's vocal delivery. I'd say there's way better darkwave out there if you need a fix but if you're really curious and in the mood for some gothic mellowed industrial with an accented millenial flavour go for it.

Exploding In Sound Records / Slowcore / Indie Rock
The only album I ever heard of Pile might have been "Green and Gray" back in 2019 and I remember not liking it so my expectations going into this were quite low. At the same time I didn't want to resort to more black metal (there'll be plenty of time for that), so a new EP sounded like a perfect occassion to give this band another shot. Honestly, I liked it more than I thought I would. Very interesting compositions and songwriting, resourceful production and overall a good, properly brief time. The vocals might be the weakest point for me, and I'm sure the band would sound drastically different with a singer that didn't sound so... average.

Self released // Experimental Black Metal
Remember when I said no more black metal today? Well I couldn't let this one pass. New (?) project from Darkside (drummer of Mgla) and The Fall (Owl Woods Graves, Over The Voids) on bass, guitars and vocals. Pretty interesting take on Polish black metal. Does it sound like Mgla? well, M. from Mgla produced it or is involved in some manner, so it definitely has the essence, but expect the unexpected. All I'll say is that it's among my favorites of this week.

https://hauntologist.bandcamp.com/album/hollow | 21 | | Gray State Under the Wheels of Progress
Ganet Records // The Upcoming Strife // Hardcore
Between this, Rejoice, Svdestada and Cancer Christ, hardcore and adjacent fans should be more than satisfied to have all this dropped on the first ten days of the year. Gray State are a straight edge hardcore band from Finland, anchored in the 90s, but with one foot on melodeath. The album sounds great and the cover artwork, originally done by Jean Delville in the 40s and titled "The Wheel of the World" fits the music perfectly. There features from Ulla Ahola (I think a member of Finnish hardcore punk band M.O.R.A.) and a couple of other names I know... nothing about (shrug).

Self released // Slowcore
First of all, I'm surprised how good this sounds for a self-produced album. Loveblaster are a three piece from Wisconsin that know how to use pauses, silence and softness. I'm not completely sure but I think this is their first full length after releasing a few scattered singles. The whole thing is very subtle, with vocals being harmonized almost all the time by both male and female vocalists. The balance leans towards the male vocals though and I would have preferred more emphasis on the approach they take on the beginning of "The Need to Fail", so the songs would differentiate a bit more, but it's still a pretty good slowcore record, even for someone that is not too big on slowcore like myself.

https://loveblaster.bandcamp.com/album/the-way-things-work-2 | 23 | | Nimeton Hauta Pimeyteen Laskee Joki
Self released // Atmospheric Black Metal
Nimetön Hauta (Nameless Tomb) is a one man black metal project from... you guessed that right, Finland! I don't know what's going on in that country but artists are relentlessly pouring out music and practically everything is quality, especially on the metal realm. This album is pretty tame, in the vein of Drudkh or even more gentle, drawing heavily from nature themes and introducing some folk elements too. I don't see myself returning to this very often, but considering the time of the year, it's a good wintery forest jam if you'd ever need one. The cover doesn't lie.

Self released // Bedroom Pop
This was quite underwhelming the first time I checked what was it all about, so I just forgot about it until anat reviewed it today. I decided to give it a proper listen and yeah, this is actually fun and pretty easy to listen to. It does enough to keep your atention, it is silly but also smart, and it sounds just as it should. If bedroom pop that doesn't take itself too serious is for you, give this one a whirl.

Trepanation Recordings // Crust Punk / Hardcore / Death Metal
And we finish the week with an album released just yesterday. Pretty heavy crust punk with some death metal influence from this British trio. I think this is their sophomore record since their 2020 debut. It's absolutely soul crushing, big, big breakdowns, plenty of d-beat and Entombed worshipping guitar tones. It's also pretty short, I think it even counts as an EP, although RYM has it as a full length. In any case, get on it.

THOUGHTS:
Well this week is usually very dry and this year was no different, we didn't have a Mechina album to start the year properly and that almost ruins everything. Listening to five albums a day hasn't been hard so far, it was actually pretty enjoyable and it made me step out of my comfort zone. Some of my favorite albums this week were either Hip Hop or Hardcore, which took my by surprise. Definitely enjoyed the searching for new releases and the research for every artist more than anything and I even had plenty of spare time to jam the albums I liked more than once and continuing my trip through the 60s.
CHANGES:
- I decided to recover the name of series I did circa 2017 or so. Papa Uni and Divaman used to contribute heavily with recs so this is in their memory.
- And this means these lists will be weekly instead of monthly cause otherwise they would be a slog to read. So see you tomorrow on a new list! | 27 | | Sprints Letter to Self

01.04.24 | I've had a lot of stupid ideas in January of mostly every year I've been on Sput, but this might be my masterpiece. I'll listen to 5 new releases a day = 25 albums a week = 100/125 albums a month (some months have 5 weeks of releases)
Posting a FAQ here cause I know you bastards never read the descriptions (in fact, I didn't include any this time, muahaha.)
"Dewi this is a dumb idea". I know, that's the point.
"But Dewi, a month has 4 weeks... that's 1200 albums total". This year, March, May, August and November will have 5 release fridays instead of the usual 4, so if the rule is 25 albums per week... do the math!
"In that case, how will you add 125 albums on one list?" I'll either try to bribe the ones with "the secret" or just make an extra list for the extra week, no biggie.
"Is this gonna be only metal?" It'll probably be heavily leaning into metal but I'll have as much variety as possible. If it sounds/looks interesting I'll include it.
"Is this gonna be only full lengths?" Mostly, but I'll add EPs, comps and live albums if I feel like there's smth interesting. The first week of January is usually pretty dry, so that's why there are more EPs and splits than usual.
"If I give you a rec, will you include it?" You can surely try.
"Will you review all of these?" Fuck no lol. I'll maybe drop a write up for my favorite of the week, or at least my favorite of the month for sure.
"What happens if you fail to jam the objective 5 albums per day because you get sick, etc?" I'll try to pick up the slack on the weekend or double up any other day within the week.
"But what if you die?" Then you guys will have to carry the torch for me. | Ryus

although if ACDC play BJCC in birmingham ill make the drive, they have cheaper nosebleeds, cheaper beer, free parking, security dont care if you smoke fuckin crack | sonictheplumber

racked up 800-900 albums last year and my new year's resolution is to cut tf down | Dewinged
01.04.24 | Rebounding to nostalgia is guaranteed, considering I'm not taking any exclusivity rule on this venture of mine. I'm still listening to my 60s albums, or whatever I feel like.
I actually cut tf down last year, it was fine yeah, listening an album more times, etc, but I realized I could fill more gaps. I feel like doing this now and maybe in March I'll abandon it and laugh at my nonsensical ideas, it all happened before. I'd be fine with it though! Fun is fun as long it is fun.
If that makes sense. | DoofDoof
01.04.24 | Only 1300? :D
I managed just under 450 2023 albums last year…I guess about the same number of ‘new’ old albums, maybe a few more
I think the user TwigTW might get close to a thousand newly released albums a year, that’s his focus, check his RYM. He also does a weekly list of ‘interesting’ albums to check out, sometimes some obscurities on there.
https://rateyourmusic.com/collection/TwigTW/strm_relyear/2023/1 | DoofDoof
01.04.24 | I’m giving myself two or three more years intense exploration of music then I’m going to try and just listen naturally without ‘projects’ or any particular focus.
That’ll be around 20,000 ratings and that’s sort of what I’ve always had as a subconscious target I think.
I love the idea of having a year I only revisit stuff and block out new releases but that would be impossible. Maybe a year of 90% old stuff could be refreshing :/ | DoofDoof
01.04.24 | Good luck with this though 🫡 | Dewinged
01.04.24 | Thanks Doof. I miss TwigTW around these lands.
Keeping a balance between new and old is tricky for sure. I did more old than new last year, this year I feel like doing the opposite.
Let's see how it goes!
I'd be just happy if anyone finds new music to jam on these lists though, that has always been my main motivation. | DoofDoof
01.04.24 | Always good to mix up the approach year on year!
70,000+ scrobbles...I'd say look at my scrobbles for 2021 which are still high (35,000) but that's my pure listening.
This year and a bit of last year I've been putting in historic scrobbles of albums I played to death when younger to make my profile reflect my actual listening taste a bit better and get rid of the total recency. I never really listen to music between about 7pm and 10pm for example but I just program in a discog to play. Usually it'll also get me revisiting those albums a bit anyway but maybe 30-40% of those scrobbles are background 'radio plays' effectively.
It's another nonsense project that keeps me amused anyway... :D | DoofDoof
01.04.24 | I think one day I realised Run the Jewels and Limp Bizkit were both in my top 100 Artists and that forced my hand | DoofDoof
01.04.24 | Yeah, I'll send anything intriguing I find your way this year...I'm never totally sure exactly what you'll dig but I think if it's 5 albums a day you will be more open to trying near enough anything ;P
Any album by a 'you thought long gone' band from the '90s who crawl out the woodwork I'll be sending your way f'sure. | Demon of the Fall
01.04.24 | are you utterly insane? Oh, wait yes you covered that. Good luck. Intrigued to find the results. Your AOTY list should be an interesting one
I seem less and less interested in keeping up with new releases each year, so I guess for 2024 I want to expand my repertoire / explore years gone by a little more adventurously, or something. I'm not setting hard targets in terms of numbers though, no pressure works best for me
If I had a shit-ton of time on my hands for dedicated listening then I could peep a few hundred new releases also, but I'll probably do one hundred-ish (similar to last year). Sandwich's pie data suggests I've hit exactly 426 or 427 total new ratings per year (? - I think) for the last 3 years. That's enough for me | AsleepInTheBack
01.04.24 | I did 1 to 3 albums a day last year and it almost killed me - Godspeed you. Papa dewi. Will defo follow along - seems likely to be a good resource for 2024 recs and review targets. | Dewinged
01.04.24 | I hope it is!
@Demon 400+ is quite a number too. The targeted numbers are just a way for me to keep some sort of order within the chaos.

01.05.24 | It could have been, if we were in September of 2012. | Dewinged
01.05.24 | Homework done, the Sprints album is actually pretty enjoyable. The split is really good, dissodeath people should get on it. Svdestada has its moments too. | Demon of the Fall
01.05.24 | 'and the bass player/vocalist of Suffering Hour'
okay I'm listening, Suffering Hour are lit

Do u guys prefer I write dem ratings up there?.I can do that. | garas
01.05.24 | Dewinged, the masochist. I wish you luck on this journey/challenge.
Probably I'll check some of your discoveries if I see something tempting. | Dewinged
01.05.24 | Love me some pain yeah.
Garas check 3 and tell me if it's good or mediocre, I need a second opinion (I dig it) | Sniff
01.05.24 | List has neocrust. Bless this list. | Dewinged
01.05.24 | Just for you Sniff, just for you. | Dewinged
01.05.24 | And by the way, no more updates til Tuesday cause I'm off duty and will be spending some quality time with the family. | Voivod
01.05.24 | During my time here, the most albums heard in a single year were close to 600.
"Believe it or not, we're still married"
I would lawyer up, if I were in your stead, unless a sizeable downgrade of your new year resolution is in order :-P | Dewinged
01.05.24 | Whatever happens, Voivod, I keep the Spoti account, so we're good 👍 | Dreamflight
01.05.24 | Maybe a dum question, but considering that albums have different degrees of complexicity will you take extra listens depending on how demanding an album can be? | pizzamachine
01.05.24 | I thought this was a joke lol | Dewinged
01.05.24 | @dreamflight Nope not really. The only reason I would listen to an album more than once it's because I liked it or felt there was something interesting I could unearth with more listens. I don't mind complexity, as long it's not a complete slog. | Azazzel
01.05.24 | cry for help or power pressure transformation into super saiyan 2 music critic, stay tuned for next time on DewiBallZ | Sniff
01.05.24 | Honestly this Pseudotsuga album is very Ictus | dedex
01.05.24 | aye good luck!!!!!!! | YoYoMancuso
01.05.24 | i'll be honest i didn't even realize there WOULD be 1300 releases this year | Dewinged
01.06.24 | Oh there'll be way more that's for sure.
@sniff good ear dude, Iván from Ictus mixed and mastered the album. | DoofDoof
01.06.24 | Agree the Sprints album was worth a go | Dewinged
01.06.24 | It was a fun listen for sure, gave it 3 spins so far. | DoofDoof
01.06.24 | I've made it my 'focused listening new album of the week' no less - will get 6 spins from me in the first week after release!
Just a way that forces me to really give an honest shot to one new album a week (usually one I'm already hyped for to be fair), it works really well. | zakalwe
01.06.24 | I’m actually thinking of culling a lot of digital stuff.
Trim it all back, expunge the good and decent, savour and cherish the classics.
Take pleasure in the golden and it’s a lot more rewarding.
| DoofDoof
01.06.24 | I’m planning that for two or three years time, just cut it all right back.
Tbh last year I spent more time with classic albums than new stuff. I think the change is already in motion. | Dewinged
01.06.24 | I did it last year, it was gratifying for sure, eventually I felt like going back to new music. I feel there's always a cycle in motion and it's just better to go with it. | bighubbabuddha
01.06.24 | I take notice of the critically acclaimed stuff and records that are raved on here but mostly I just dig what I feel like. Fair play Dewi, you do you | Dewinged
01.07.24 | Cheers hubba.
I really don't know what to do with the 5 Ryan albums. One is a live album, another one sort of Adams goes pop punk. No interest in those two. Star Sign and Sword and Stone have good tracks so maybe I choose one of the two. | garas
01.08.24 | My report on #3 (Panzerwar): It's a bit mediocre in terms of production (the lack of bass kinda irritates me), but on the other hand, I dig the early-Satyricon vibe. | Dewinged
01.08.24 | I had the same impression, garas. Execution and performance are a bit iffy but I dig the amateurish brush strokes of dungeon synth. | Dewinged
01.09.24 | We're so back, adding more music immediately, my dears. | Dewinged
01.09.24 | I know you bunch were all eagerly waiting for me to add the new five items of today's menu so there you go, more to come tomorrow! | dedex
01.09.24 | don't hesitate to ask me for french rap albums if you're really desperate to get to that shiny 1.3k lol | Sniff
01.09.24 | LFG new Rejoice. Rejoice! | Dewinged
01.09.24 | It's pretty good | Demon of the Fall
01.09.24 | I'm hoping to attain a summary of all your albums of the month / year as the year goes on
thinking it should hopefully be a little different to the norm | Dewinged
01.09.24 | Album of the month is gonna be a bitch tbh | Dewinged
01.10.24 | The menu for today has been served ladies and gentlemen, and there's a doozy. | Dewinged
01.11.24 | Last batch incoming! And then some thoughts, changes, conclusions... | Dewinged
01.11.24 | Aaaand we're done!
Thoughts and conclusions posted, all jams jammed, welcome back Deweekly, and new list tomorrow cause a new release day is dawning upon us! | Mythodea
01.11.24 | Saying this is in memory of Divaman really cemented in my mind that he's gone, and it sucks.
Hope you're having a great time with this bonkers challenge, I'll be lurking hoping to see what I can scavenge! Happy new year guys | Dewinged
01.11.24 | Happy new year Myth, yes, I really miss Diva, he was such a polite, music lovin' gentleman.
The challenge has been fun so far yeah. I remember when we tried the album a day one, I made to April lol, so let's see how this goes. | Sunnyvale
01.11.24 | You're a madman, Dewi!
Nonetheless, thank you for your service and I will plundering these lists for obscure albums to check out. | Sunnyvale
01.11.24 | Starting with Loveblaster... | Dewinged
01.11.24 | Don't worry Sunny, the madness only lasts a few months, then I usually wake up and go back to normal as the year goes by XD
Loveblaster is very nice, hope you enjoy it! | Sunnyvale
01.12.24 | Fair enough! Well, I'll keep tabs on your progress until the train goes off the rails. | Uzumaki
01.12.24 | Black Sky Giant is always an enjoyable time. This concept seems to be absolutely crazy, and I’m happy to be here for it. | Mythodea
01.12.24 | @Dewi, yeah, I remember that too, it got tiring quickly for me to do this systematically. Now there are days I might listen to five albums thoroughly, and weeks I might listen to just one or two. | AsleepInTheBack
01.12.24 | 25 is great, thanks for flagging. Need to get me some more crust. |
