02.02.24 | "Closest they ever came to Nu Metal."
Are you implying Static-X never were Nu Metal? |
FrozenFirebug
02.02.24 | being grouped in with nu metal because of the time and place and scene you were in doesn't make you nu metal
except for the times you were nu metal |
VlacDrac
02.02.24 | They always were a Nu Metal band. I don't buy the "Industrial Metal" band just because they had the occasional bloops and bleeps. They sound nothing like Godflesh or Ministry. |
FrozenFirebug
02.02.24 | godflesh has no bloops or bleeps
or riffs
or groove
or anything interesting about industrial
and people still call it industrial
so whatever
absolute jack shit here in common with nu beyond the 2003-2005 material regardless |

02.02.24 | "They always were a Nu Metal band. I don't buy the "Industrial Metal" band just because they had the occasional bloops and bleeps. They sound nothing like Godflesh or Ministry."
their sound, particularly the first two albums, are industrial metal, but comes from that rob zombie/spineshank industrial metal era. it's still industrial metal though. |
DrGonzo1937
02.02.24 | some spicy takes on this list as well haha |

02.02.24 | cannibal fucking sucks yeah
shadow zone is underrated |

02.02.24 | been listening to shadow zone the last couple days and it's a decent album, yeah |

02.02.24 | I agree the two new records are actually pretty solid; I just dug into them the other day after I heard they were still made with old Wayne tracks.
That being said I think we vastly disagree on both Cult of Static and Cannibal. I'd switch them, probably. |
Flugmorph
02.02.24 | probably the worst most disgusting and vile ranking of any discography ive ever seen |

02.02.24 | Starting in the very late 80's, Nu-Metal didn't even exist. The only other bands using heavy guitars were Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, Slayer and Metallica, Motley Crue and Poison (I suppose), and crossover punks like D.R.I. and The Exploited. None of these bands were using short repetitive (looped) chugga-guitar riffs like Ministry, Skrew, KMFDM and a bunch of bands on the WaxTrax! label were playing at the time. (Godflesh was a bit of an outlier here; chugging isn't a big part their technique. But they did tour with Skinny Puppy in '92, and Puppy was definitely being called Industrial at the time).
If anything Nu-Metal evolved as an Industrial/Metal/Rap hybrid. To me, Static-X's looped-chugga guitars clearly sound like a flavor of Industrial with Nu-Metal influences, not vice-versa. A highly evolved flavor for sure, but still a derivative version of Industrial. But I'm old and biased, so can't hear stuff the way I did when Industrial was new |
anotherdimension
02.02.24 | Saying their best albums came after Wayne's passing is absolutely bonkers IMO |
FrozenFirebug
02.02.24 | project regeneration culminates all the best aspects of their sound and leaves out all the dull ones
it is quite weird that the head of the band had to die for it to be good, especially considering a lot of the material post-2020 is his work
guess someone else doing the directing and assembling adds a missing puzzle piece
rip tho |
kildare
02.02.24 | Favorite tracks from the new one, FrozenFirebug, or anyone else? |
FrozenFirebug
02.02.24 | i literally do not even look at track titles
albums only
would have to do a relisten while staring at foobar just to answer that
but the one i quoted in the second post of this thread is stuck in my head presently, disco otsego i think |
kildare
02.02.24 | Yeah, I don't do names either. It's all track numbers nowadays. But I'll revisit otsego. I haven't given the whole album a thorough pass yet so might've missed this one |
anotherdimension
02.02.24 | There is nothing on Vol. 2 that excites me at all on first pass. Doubt that'll change. |
kildare
02.02.24 | @anotherdimension: Agreed. Sounds to me like they might be trying too hard to carry the torch for Wayne. There's talent there, but they should try to do their own thing on a side-project, get away from the Static-X expectations |

02.02.24 | shit list, Wayne wouls be ashamed |
hangth3dj
02.03.24 | Well...it's certainly an opinion.
How Cult of Static is anything other than last is beyond me. |
FrozenFirebug
02.03.24 | cult of static could do better in the production department but that's it's only notable flaw to me
it's probably the only time in history i'd say solos added something to a band's sound
cannibal tried evolving through solos, but cannibal doesn't chug how i want it to chug, and the electronic elements & screams are much better on cult of static |
Emim
02.03.24 | WDT is def the best |
VlacDrac
02.03.24 | Just because they aren't Hip-Hop influenced, that doesn't not make their music less Nu Metal. |
FrozenFirebug
02.03.24 | the style of the guitar isn't even nu-y most of the time
you can argue soad is nu cause of the way the riffs are and the eclectic vocals
you can argue early deftones is nu because the drums and guitar are clear korn worship + they do the whole quiet/loud thing
this has no roots in that at alllllllllllllllllllllllll it's just screaming over mechanical chugs and jackhammer blips 24/7 |
Relinquished
02.04.24 | yea you don’t know nu metal |

02.04.24 | cannibal is my fav static-x |

02.04.24 | I have no idea why but their music reminds me of NFS Underground 2 |
