Lydia Ranked

I've been diving back into this band lately. Illuminate was one of my all time favorite albums growing up, but I didn't keep up with them much after that. Leighton is a hell of a songwriter and has made some truly beautiful music over the years. The band has gone through many lineup changes over the years which has led to a diverse discography, with recent albums seeing them start to abandon their signature sound. This is my ranking of their LPs.

I Was Someone Else

This album leans into an over-produced sound, doesn't feel like Lydia; it's pure pop. VHS is just awful. Heavy is pretty good though for a pop song. Album feels like an R&B pop record which does not work.
2/5
Best Songs: Heavy

Liquor

2018's Liquor is not a good album. There are only a couple track worth listening to and it again dives a bit too far into over-production and electronic flairs. They really start to abandon the organic sound of previous albums on this one.
2.4/5
Best Songs: Friends, Way You want It

Paint it Golden

This album was a huge drop in quality after the amazing Illuminate but still good. Where Illuminate was engaging front to back, this album sort of coasts by. It also shows a more up-beat and cheerful side of the band, which is fine, but doesn't hold a candle to the somber sound that usually defines the bands sound. It's their most "sing-songwriter" feeling album, with basic songwriting and structure. Some hallmark sounds from Illuminate like the guitar tones and drum parts are present.
3.4/5
Best Songs: Dragging Your Feet in the Mud, Get it Right, I'll Bite You, Birds

Devil

A nice blend of Illuminate melody and Run Wild pop sensibilities, this album holds some of their best songs to date.
3.7/5
Best Songs: From A Tire Swing, Knee Deep, Holidays, Take Your Time

Run Wild

The best of Lydia's poppy albums, which leans heavily on bombastic production and layered arrangements, Run Wild is a beautiful and cohesive record. This was a turning point for the bands sound, which leaned poppier but holds onto the sounds and feel of previous records, making for a near perfect mix. Georgia may be their best song.
4/5
Best Songs: Georgia, When it Gets Dark Out, Riverman, The Sounds in Your Dreams, Watching the Lights

Illuminate

Still their magnum opus, a perfect indie-rock/emo record. This album has a palpable atmosphere that still holds up.
5/5
Best songs: This is Twice Now, A Fine Evening For a Rogue, I Woke Up Near The Sea, Hospital, Fate, Sleep Well, Stay Awake, All I See

I hope the band continues to make music because they are very talented. I look forward to whatever is next.
