| Caribou | 1 | | Caribou Swim
I'm a fan of Caribou’s music. His music tends to have a nice, sweet, sunny sound to it and I enjoy the variation of his stuff. As in, “Andorra” and “Swim” sound pretty different and both sound pretty different to “Start Breaking My Heart”. I thought “Suddenly” was pretty good too. I tend to really enjoy his vocals and all the little unique things he opts for when it comes to production. Like his sound palette, chord voicings and his really skittery, impressive drum arrangements. Definitely a comfort artist for me. | 2 | | Caribou Andorra
I started on “Swim” and it didn't click but I went to Andorra out of curiosity and I liked it. I started liking it more and more. I think I also listened to “The Milk Of Human Kindness” and enjoyed it, especially “Bees”. | 3 | | Caribou Start Breaking My Heart (as Manitoba)
I settled into “Andorra” pretty well and started enjoying Swim. It was around “Start Breaking My Heart” that I started realizing that his albums, while similar sounding in a lot of ways, definitely differ in how you would classify them using genres like Electronic, Pop, Rock, Indietronica, etc. “Start Breaking” is like an IDM album, “Andorra” is a Neo Psychedelia Rock thing, and “Swim” is a house album. At least that's how I pictured it in my head with my admittedly narrow understanding of genres but you get the point. | 4 | | Caribou Up in Flames (as Manitoba)
I still enjoy Andorra a lot. It took awhile for me to get into “Up In Flames” but its really great. | 5 | | Caribou Suddenly
“Suddenly” is very comfy. I think “Our Love” is alright. Probably my least fav but it's just a taste thing. It sounds like a kind of album I could really like with slightly different taste. | 6 | | Caribou Our Love
Favorites:
Dundas, Ontario
Skunks
Silver Splinters
Bees
Melody Day
Sandy
Kaili
Lime | 7 | | Daphni Jiaolong
I haven't checked anything by his dance alter ego Daphni yet but I probably will soon. All I can say for now is this is some good album artwork. | 8 | | Daphni Joli Mai
Admittedly I didn't actually like him very much when i first discovered Caribou but I guess it's kind of an acquired taste because I really like his music now. | 9 | | Daphni Cherry
What's your favorite Caribou song? How'd you get into him? If you haven't heard anything then what do you think? | |

03.26.24 | I first got into Caribou with Swim which I still think is Dan's best work to date. Seeing them live made me much more of a fan however as they really let the songs breathe and expand with their jams. I personally love Our Love as I'm a big rave guy | hel9000
03.26.24 | My brother got me a copy of Swim when it came out, that's still my favorite. Dude is fantastic live. | robertsona
03.26.24 | dude has a math phd. | protokute
03.26.24 | used to dig this guy a lot | gabba
03.26.24 | Swim is awesome. I also have a PhD, so I can tell. | myri14
03.26.24 | I better see this guy live and listen to his Dancier stuff as I haven't given that aspect of his work my due diligence. Cool that he has a math PhD, I feel like that's almost reflective of the variation of his styles, as in he has broad interests within the music he makes and broad interests in general. | gabba
03.26.24 | Maybe, but my point was it doesn’t make a difference when it comes to music. Or else, Aphex, Squarepusher & co should have multiple PhDs. Maybe they do? | myri14
03.26.24 | Maybe but idk. It sounds like a lot of work tho. I'm sure he had to want to do it. Ig it's a fun quirk of his but I agree that it's not required. Pretty cool tho! | robertsona
03.26.24 | When did I say it made a difference when it comes to his music? | robertsona
03.26.24 | It’s a tiny, unusual, kind of interesting thing is all | gabba
03.26.24 | Yeah, it is. More interesting than the fact that Jared Leto did some acting before making… wait… music? | robertsona
03.26.24 | 30 Seconds to Mars will always be valid
Those are some words you might type if you wanted to. Could provide other examples as well | gabba
03.26.24 | Of course 30s is valid, they exist. Don’t know why I brought them up tbh, it was stupid. Let’s stick to our old friend Dr. Snaith. Saw him on the tour of Swim, it was fascinating. | robertsona
03.26.24 | I saw him open for Radiohead in DC, maybe 2012. I remember him killing it | JohnnyoftheWell
03.26.24 | 4 is most of the things i dislike about folktronica incarnate and it put me off the rest of his work - should peep 1 at some point | robertsona
03.26.24 | I’m the inverse: I love the idea of the sound behind UIF. But none of the songs hit—he’s not strong at structuring songs satisfyingly at that point imo, and maybe in particular the drums feel anticlimactic lol, always moving but going nowhere
Am I allowed to say my fav is the 2020 one? | protokute
03.26.24 | I want to go back to these albums now, have really fond memories of it. I remember walking back home from middle school listening to 1, as I was beginning to get into electronic music. Then I got to Andorra and Up In Flames a while later, and I loved it, so carefree and innocent, used to listen to it riding my bike at the agronomic studies campus on the city I graduated. | myri14
03.26.24 | @Johnny@sona@protokute All 3 of yall have pretty good points when it comes to Caribou.
@gabba @robertsona I'm really interested in seeing how he is live now. Sounds like a real treat. Love when a band has a good live act. Its like the music enters a different dimension.
@robertsona caribou and radiohead in a single night sounds like a treat!
@Johnny That's a funny and apt way of putting it. I preferred "Start Breaking My Heart" and kept changing my mind about Andorra.
@robertsona good point about the song structure. also "Suddenly" is amazing and I heard that a lot of people reacted really well to it (not to mention I liked it a lot). I think at one point it was even my fav so its a good take in my book.
both of y'all-- I see where you're coming from about this and I mentioned it a little but I kind of struggled to get much out of his music. But its really comfortable and sometimes really hits.
@protokute sounds like really nice memories. I think I would've dug Swim and Up In Flames in middle school! |
