i feel like one million things happened musically in this year. But 25 albums will do | 10 | | Leonard Cohen Songs of Leonard Cohen

This dude is so sad. This is such a sad guy | 9 | | Duke Ellington The Far East Suite

You can imagine yourself skirting the hustle and bustle in a still crowded market, watching people flow like water moves from your hotel room, or overlooking some arid scrubland. Plays with middle-eastern sounds respectfully - he is master of this sort of craft, of course. | 8 | | The Doors The Doors

Carnival blues rock, maddened front man who keeps staring at me from across the bar in an attempt to seem unsettling, and its working. Light My Fire and The End are massive | 7 | | Traffic Mr. Fantasy

Cool psych rock with blues influence. Lots of cool creative ideas on display here. Dear Mr. Fantasy is the clear frontrunner for best tune, but there are shorter, jauntier songs that satisfy here as well. This band loves their brass/wind instruments and it adds to some very weird and whimsical moments. | 6 | | The Beatles Magical Mystery Tour
4.5
Technically only an album in the US, Magical Mystery Tour is a favorite of mine because it just delivers a variety of strong Beatles tunes! Riddled with classics, too - I am The Walrus, All You Need Is Love, Hello Goodbye, and Penny Lane all show up here. | 5 | | Roscoe Mitchell Sound

Starts off a blitz, ends a stretched out, sparse frayed piece of work. | 4 | | The Beach Boys Smiley Smile
4.5
A Beach Boys classic, Smiley Smile’s high score comes from two things - that is, each Side has an absolutely incredible S-tier sing-along tune (Heroes and Villains, Good Vibrations) followed by rapid-fire ideas fleshed out just enough to be enjoyable. A song about vegetables, a harrowing orchestral instrumental, a mysterious tune that is probably about a virgin, the incredible choir-driven With Me Tonight - all incredible stuff. The only reason the Smile Sessions aren’t here is because Brian Wilson gave it a proper release in 2004. | 3 | | The Jimi Hendrix Experience Are You Experienced
4.5
Blistering guitarwork from front to back. Psychedelic grooves to help you sink deep into a brand new world. Have you ever been experienced? | 2 | | The Moody Blues Days of Future Passed
4.5
Magical symphonic prog-rock. Rather life-affirming. Eggs you to take in each day for the gift it is. | 1 | | Philip Cohran On The Beach
4.5
Expert playing with so many influences it makes my head spin (but then, I’m still learning about a lot of this). The free and lively atmosphere of Ministrel and the slow, sectioned, very intentional segments of On The Beach are the key here, though Unity definitely has its hypnotic moments. Hypnotic, I think that’s the best way to describe this record. | |
