1st October 2024

Post-Bop [1959]

1959 good lord this booped bopped and bopedd way ahead of its time got the melody got the camels got the chameleons got the soul got too much? Idk more listens required. [tbc]

Update (02.10.24): box of frogs mental this one. All over the plaza. Love. Hurts head. Take track by track. Soak up that soup. [4]

Update (08.10.24): the more I listen the more burdensome and tedious the second half of this gets. [3.5]
2The Dave Brubeck Quartet
Time Out

2nd October 2024

Cool Jazz [1959]

I fucking snooze through cool typically but am captivated rn. Time signature fuckery is subtle enough not to jar. Recording quality is sublime. Beautiful use of negative space. The melodies float like the air through the air as if you could see them wiggle in front of eye eggs. Wiggle on brother. [4]

Update (12.10.24): gah so good the plinks and the plonks brother the plinks and the plonks [4.5]
3Thelonious Monk
Monk's Music

3rd October 2024

Hard Bop [1957]

Monk you fucking weirdo. Such janky keys. Classic vibes too tho. [3.5] late career stuff has been my preference so far and this isn’t an exception

Update (08.10.24): growing on me. getting the two and three and four of ruby more now. [4]
4Miles Davis
Milestones

4th October 2024

Hard Bop [1958]

Somethin' Else

5th October 2024

Cool Jazz / Hard Bop [1958]

Enjoy the to and fro spar and retort session between Adderley and Davis. I will gladly bow to its classic status while also acknowledging that it’s not quite my tempo. [3.5]

Update (06.10.24): tho fuck Autumn Leaves played over speakers wrapped around a bottle of wine filling the room is absolute magic. A reminder that I know nothing context is everything and that I need to let this breathe. [4]

Jhazmyne's Lullaby

9th October 2024

Metalcore [2001]

Closer totally unexpected. Rest of this is dirty. Usually hate the more second-wave post-hardcore elements of this but actually feeling p nostalgic in a warm fuzzy way. [3.5]

10th October 2024

Ambient Techno / IDM [2024]

Satisfying massaging of earlobes with the fudgy chewy prod and deep grooves. Clangs and whips. [3.5]
15Chat Pile
Cool World

11th October 2024

Noise Rock / Sludge [2024]

Currently failing to meet my unmeet(meat)able expectations which is unfair and I am going to let it simmer. [3.5]
16Thelonious Monk
Thelonious Monk Trio

12th October 2024

Hard Bop [1953]

Monk’s take on 50s hard bop still jars my spine in fun ways. Throwing out dissonance and weird non harmonic things (reharmonisation?) throws balls of curve at what should be far more straightforward than it is. Feel like he was born in the wrong era; 10 years later and we may have got spiritual free jazz Monk and all died from Monkness. This retains its sanity, just. [3.5]
17Tohru Aizawa Quartet
Tachibana

13th October 2024

Latin Jazz / Spiritual Jazz / J-Jazz [1975]

Bunch of students come together release an album to zero critical acclaim and go about their merry way, then rediscovered and adored in the 2010s with a repress and other nice belated things. High energy, nothing too weird, just passion of the lo fi varietal and a big thumping pulse. [4] maybe more
18Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie
Bird & Diz

14th October 2024

Bebop [1952] (recorded 1949-50)

Drums like buckshot Monk lemon dressing everywhere trumpet and sax tangled in two a very fun mix with good prod for the time but bad prod for now but has a lush in the moment cadence. [4]
19Thelonious Monk
Misterioso

14th October 2024

Hard Bop [1958]

Easily fave monk ever so far hands down the live ambience the showmanship the great sax that sounds like Coltrane but is apparently not just splendid. [4] probably more

Honor Killed The Samurai

15th October 2024

Drumless / Abstract Hip Hop [2016]

Rip. [4]

Update (17.10.24): sinking into this further it’s all fucking sublime the beats a intangible mix of things the album flow Ka’s flow the lyrics tome-like and thumping god. [4.5]
22John Coltrane
"Live" at the Village Vanguard

15th October 2024

Modal / Hard Bop / Post-Bop / Proto-Free [1962, recorded 1961]

Kinda harrowing in a watching someone fall apart at the seams kind of way, the giving way of the butter smooth Spiritual and low fuss romp of Softly into the fucking chaos that is Chasin’, followed by Dolphy and Trane convulsing on India, and Impressions will also take your lunch money you dumb fuck. It’s like you can see the cogs whirring towards spiritual and free in real time. [4]
23Cecil Taylor
Live at the Cafe Montmartre

16th October 2024

Free / ag Jazz [1962]

More preposterous key splintering from master splinter himself. Yet to form strong opinion other than that this is a softer effigy of Cecil (than unit structures, salty swift or conquistador) and kind of lovely for it. [tbc]

Update (17.10.24): flight of the seven million rabid bumblebees. [4]
24Venetian Snares
The Chocolate Wheelchair Album

16th October 2024

Breakcore [2003]

Is it an album, is it a meme, who is to say (me: it is both), dumb, not dumb, weird, not weird, everything you would expect from a chocolate wheelchair. [3.5] pushing [4]
25Cecil Taylor
Jazz Advance

18th October 2024

Post-Bop / ag [1956]

Bop from another fucking planet Christ there’s something amusing and lovely and fun about Cecil doing the thing Cecil does in a more traditional bop package and the whole thing aching bursting quaking at the seams it’s hilarity alternative timeline madness stupid chaotic creamy nonsensical bliss. [4]
26Cecil Taylor
Nefertiti, The Beautiful One Has Come

18th October 2024

Free Jazz [1962]

Ignore the 1997 release date all these are the extensions to the live album at 23 but I think the extra tracks are from different dates? Later set of tunes definitely show a band more in tune with another aka this is even better! Absolutely boisterous blistering blissing blissful dissonance yum. [4]

20th October 2024

Indie Folk [2024]

I am annoyed that I enjoyed this tired trite self parody and pander but we are where we are. [3]
29Dizzy Gillespie, Sonny Stitt and Sonny Rollins
Sonny Side Up

20th October 2024

Hard Bop [1957/1959]

Deserves its [4] solely on how hard the Eternal Triangle goes. Absurd gauntlet of sax, sax and trumpet. After Hours is a perfectly timed swinging comedown, and the closer reminds you of why you love the triangle. Most lovely pacing most lovely performances and the charm of the opener is a hug. [4]
30Albert Ayler
Greenwich Village: Complete Impulse Recordings

21st/22nd October 2024

Free/Spiritual/Third Stream Jazz (and ig Marching Band) [1967 but technically released in the 90s]

2 hours of Ayler doing the Ayler thing with a big band going ham over marching band tunes (why not) it’s equal parts hilarity, unlistenable and heartbreaking - on the spectrum of seeing your childhood set on fire and crying with laughter (but also regular crying) in public. Yet to settle on a view as taken 2 days to listen and it’s a oniony boi BUT Angels is magic Truth is Marching In also magic, the second half I’m hazier on but Omega almost brought me to tears and so [tbc]

Update (23.10.24): someone pointed out how much charm oozes from the lo-fi prod and I agree! You feel like you’ve discovered something you shouldn’t. Spirits Rejoice has proven even better than Marching on second inspection. Feels proto Godspeed ie bait/switch the cute melody for dissonance and back again to tug at heart strings. Occasionally literal noise. Fucking Ayler. [4.5] prob [5]

23rd October 2024

Noisecore / Harsh Noise [2011]

Like if someone tried to recreate instruments disorder but sucked. [2]
32Ichiko Aoba
0%

25th October 2024

Folk [2014]

At its best, fucking transportive. Aoba is great at that mystical eerie but cosy space, and the live recordings (when there aren’t doors slamming and alarms going off Jesus Christ track 1) elevate that spiritual quality even further. Dislike some of the spoken word on tracks 1 and 10, otherwise v v difficult to fault. [4]
33The Quintet
Jazz at Massey Hall

25th October 2024

Bebop [1953]

The definition of romp. A sliver of the soul of jazz is baked into this. Enjoyed jotw’s breakdown of the mythos of this in that jazz list that he did and enjoyed finally cracking the egg and letting the bebop flow out. J A z Z. [4]
34Lee Konitz
Subconscious-Lee

29th October 2024

Cool/Bebop [1955, recorded 1949]

The birth of the birth of the cool. Mint sauce and dried dates. Not heard guitar dueting on a jazz record this early in the timeline before. Calming and disarming. [3.5]
35Machine Girl
MG Ultra

29th October 2024

Digital Hardcore [2024]

The shape of punk to come picking up the Bottomless Pit rabid future punk froth and going dnb with the ground quake. It’s fun. [3.5]
36Ben Quad
Ephemera

29th October 2024

Skramz / Emo / Math [2024]

He screm now. [3]
37Pharoah Sanders
Black Unity

30th October 2024

Free / Spiritual / Avant Jazz [1972]

Was vibin and then fell asleep one to return to [tbc].

Update (08.11.24): idk kind of wanted m o r e the groove this weaves around doesn’t grip me like I want it to but defo a place and time mood album will revisit when less sleepy [3.5]
38Venetian Snares
Cavalcade of Glee and Dadaist Happy Pom Poms

31st October 2024

Breakcore / Drill and Bass [2006]

At times, fucking up their with the best VS or at least my fave VS, feels a bit woolly at times tho. More listens required placeholder [3.5] for the good times.
