2009: A Brief Retrospective Of Songs

My top 25 songs of the year thus far.
1Animal Collective
My Girls

I didn't go ga-ga over Merriweather Post Pavillion like most people, in fact I really don't like this band. But goddamn this is catchy and my most played song from this year.
2Mono
Everlasting Light

The piano part is great and as Electric City said, the last ten seconds are probably the best 10 seconds of recent memory.
3Grizzly Bear
Ready, Able

Perhaps not the most obvious choice compared to Two Weeks, Southern Point or While You Wait For the Others, but the refrain at the end of this song is what made the album click for me.
4Andrew Bird
Souverian

His most underrated record produces perhaps one of his best songs.
5maudlin of the Well
Rose Quartz Turning to Glass

First Half = violin ftw. Second Half = vocal melodies ftw.
6The Antlers
Two

Pretty. Catchy. Depressing.
7Yo La Tengo
Gentle Hours

Dark Was the Night was tailor-made to populate a good chunk of year end song lists. Mine will be no different as you will see. Great, dreamy, piano driven shoegaze.
8Bat for Lashes
Daniel

I think she likes the 80's. I think I like that she likes the 80's.
9Grizzly Bear
Foreground

God, what a gorgeous closer.
10Japandroids
Young Hearts Spark Fire

All I have to say is, "I don't wanna worry about dying / I just wanna worry about those sunshine girls." Best line of the year.
11Cymbals Eat Guitars
And the Hazy Sea

It was a tough decision to pick my favourite from their excellent debut. But the opener just lets you know what you're in for perfectly.
12Charles Spearin
Vittoria

The change from big band jazz to surf rock is sweet.
13Camera Obscura
Honey in the Sun

The horns create a great fanfare and I just love her voice.
14St. Vincent
Black Rainbow

Epic ending.
15Feist & Ben Gibbard
Train Song

Another Dark Was the Night participant, this is an infectious, low-key folk tune.
16Phoenix
Love Like a Sunset (Pt. 1 and 2)

So I'm cheating with this one a bit, who cares. Epic krautrock.
17Isis
Hall of the Dead

rawr.
18The Decemberists
The Wanting Comes in Waves / Repaid

No it is not their best song (Crane Wife 1 and 2 and a handful of others say hi) but it does come close
19maudlin of the Well
Excerpt From 6,000,000,000,000....

haha, I'm not typing that all out.
20Andrew Bird
Effigy

Violin solo makes Noble Beast
21Sufjan Stevens
You Are the Blood

This is beyond ridiculous. And that makes it awesome.
22Conor Oberst and Gillian Welch
Lua

See, I told you Dark Was the Night had a lot of great stuff.
23Dirty Projectors & David Byrne
Knotty Pine

Oh, hey Dark Was the Night.
24Charles Spearin
Vanessa

So beautiful. "And then I felt my body, moving with something."
25St. Vincent
The Strangers

I love the fuzzed out guitar at the end of this song.
