2009 In Metal Thusfar
Not an exhaustive list, but what I've picked up so far from '09. Let me what I've missed and whatnot. I've yet to listen to the last 3 albums here. |
1 | | Altar of Plagues White Tomb
Black metal from Ireland with a slight hardcore tinge. Me likey. |
2 | | Anaal Nathrakh In the Constellation of the Black Widow
Black/Death/Grind/whathaveyou from the UK. One of my faves of the year. |
3 | | Architects Hollow Crown
Solid metalcore from the UK. |
4 | | Augury Fragmentary Evidence
Montreal tech death. Not as good as their first album imo, but quite good regardless. Second half of album is better. |
5 | | Be'lakor Stone's Reach
Aussie melo death, better than their debut and album cover rulez. |
6 | | Blood Red Throne Souls of Damnation
Norwegian death metal featuring members of Satyricon and Emperor. |
7 | | Buried Inside Spoils of Failure
Canadian sludge. Good album, can't decided how it compares to the first as of yet. |
8 | | Centaurus-A Side Effects Expected
German tech death. Surprisingly good. |
9 | | Church of Misery Houses of the Unholy
Stoner/sludge from Japan, picked it up off of S4D or rasputin recs, cant remember. Rules. |
10 | | Coalesce OX
Killer metalcore. Band's first album in over a decade I believe. |
11 | | Darkest Hour The Eternal Return
DC metalcore/death metal(?), not as strong as their other releases but still quite good. |
12 | | Destroyer 666 Defiance
Aussie blackened thrash. Such a sick album. |
13 | | Disappearer The Clearing
Post metal in the vein of Isis/Pelican/etc etc |
14 | | Exivious Exivious
'Fusion Metal.' Instrumental metal with jazz influences featuring members of Cynic and Textures. |
15 | | Fen The Malediction Fields
Some BM from the UK, good album. |
16 | | Fleshgod Apocalypse Oracles
Brutal/Tech DM that slays. Highly recommended. |
17 | | Funebrarum The Sleep of Morbid Dreams
Solid DM from New Jersey, old school style. |
18 | | Giant Squid The Ichthyologist
Sludge/doom I'd say, didn't really like this as much as the other release. |
19 | | Gnostic Engineering the Rule
Tech death/thrash. Nothing new here but still an entertaining album. |
20 | | Gorod Process of a New Decline
French tech death, not as good as Leading Vision but still rules face. |
21 | | Gwynbleidd Nostalgia
The 'American Opeth.' Fantastic prog death at the very least. |
22 | | Irepress Sol Eye Sea I
Sludge/Post Metal from Boston area, very impressive as is their other releases. These guys need more love. |
23 | | Isis Wavering Radiant
No Panopticon, but still excellent sludge/post metal from these Boston boys. |
24 | | Kalisia Cybion
French prog death, quite good. Album is too long I think. |
25 | | Karl Sanders Saurian Exorcisms
Some Middle Eastern/Egyptian Ambient from the guitarist from Nile. Better than the previous effort, excellent. |
26 | | Kylesa Static Tensions
Sludge from Georgia (USA), good album but I recall the second half being significantly better than the first. |
27 | | Lay Down Rotten Gospel of the Wretched
Excellent german death metal, with a melodic tinge. Fun listen. |
28 | | Mastodon Crack the Skye
Progressive sludge I'll say, butprobably their most accessible release. Excellent, but not as good as Blood Mountain/Leviathan imo. |
29 | | Minsk With Echoes In the Movement of Stone
Atmospheric sludge/doom from Chicago. Excellent album, better than Ritual Fires. |
30 | | Obscura Cosmogenesis
German tech death. Got some flac around here for ripping off Necrophagist, which it does. But not really a bad thing. Decent album. |
31 | | Old Man's Child Slaves of the World
Melo black metal with Galder of Dimmu Borgir. Reasonable album, but I don't see this as any better than their other albums. |
32 | | Ribspreader Opus Ribcage
Swedish DM, used to feature Swano. I think he produced this album? Correct me. |
33 | | Scale the Summit Carving Desert Canyons
Instrumental prog metal that keeps it interesting. |
34 | | Solstafir Kold
Good release from this Icelandic quartet, for fans of Primordial, very similar. |
35 | | Suffocation Blood Oath
Great New York DM, band hasn't lost it. Better than their more recent releases from what I gather, even though I've only heard their first three. |
36 | | Tombs Winter Hours
Sludge/post metal/shoegaze from NY. Good release, saw them on tour with Isis and Pelican. |
37 | | Tribulation The Horror
Swedish thrash/death with one of the top albums of the year. Hear this. |
38 | | Ulcerate Everything Is Fire
Aussie brutal/dissonant DM. Rapes. Get this now. |
39 | | Unanimated In the Light of Darkness
Swedish melo death/black, good album and fairly entertaining. Similar to Dissection/Sacramentum a bit I'd say. |
40 | | Vomitory Carnage Euphoria
More swedish DM, well executed release. |
41 | | Vreid Milorg
War themed BM with members of whta used to be Windir. |
42 | | Wolves in the Throne Room Black Cascade
Nice release from these Oregon black metallers, can't decided whether I like it more/less than other albums. |

Heard good things about these guys. |
44 | | Absu Absu
Texas blackened thrash, similar to Destroyer 666 from what i gather. |
